Oppo Drop: Louisiana Congressman and New House Majority Whip Steve Scalise Spoke at Gathering Organized by David Duke in 2002
Scalise claims to not have known the group's background or ideology. Although, you know, when a group is calling itself "Euro-American Unity," you should know. "Euro" and "European" and "European-American" are all buzzwords used by Duke and other white-rights folks.Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the newly elected House majority whip, acknowledged Monday that he spoke at a gathering hosted by white nationalist leaders while serving as a state representative in 2002, thrusting a racial controversy into House Republican ranks days before the party assumes control of both congressional chambers. The 48-year-old Scalise, who ascended to the House GOP’s third-ranking post earlier this year, confirmed through an adviser that he once appeared at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization. That organization, founded by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, has been called a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. "Beyond hosting a Web site, whitecivilrights.com, and staging an occasional conference, EURO is a paper tiger, serving primarily as a vehicle to publicize Duke’s writing and sell his books," the SPLC writes on its Web site. In a statement, Scalise’s spokesperson Moira Bagley emphasized that the then-state lawmaker was unaware at the time of the group's ideology and its association with racists and neo-Nazi activists.On Twitter, people are Questioning the Timing -- Why now, of all times? It's well after the elections, including the late runoff for the Senate seat; why drop this damaging information now? One of those guys suggests that it's Scalise's camp who dumped the information -- getting it out there when it's harmless to do so.

I think it's entirely plausible that his staff simply didn't exercise their due diligence in vetting the event. In 2002, a year after 9/11, if I heard about a "Euro-American Unity" event, I would have just figured it was something to show solidarity between the continents against AQ and the like. Or maybe that's just because I try to ignore crackpots like David Duke, and am therefore ignorant of the kind of rhetoric he uses. Also, Scalise is Italian and Catholic, two groups the Klukker types tend not to be big fans of.

Yes, it would be a better world and a better country if everybody got over tribal racism and yes, the failure of this guy's staff to vet the organization before he spoke there does not reflect well on them or on their employer but given the extreme racism on display from the Democrats and given the fact that Democrats will just lie and make stuff up when they can't dig up any real dirt, I am just past caring whether somebody can be accused of racism or any other factor other than the the things I care about.
Do they respect the Constitution? Do they want the government in DC to get smaller or larger and more intrusive? I care a lot more about this sort of stuff than any of this race gotcha game.

Looking at the 2002 news, this was back when Duke was still a thing in Louisiana politics, running for office, threatening to run for office, getting his offices raided for tax fraud and such. All over the crawl.
If fact, he was one of the guys Scalise kept running into as a potential opponent in races. So, he can't claim "Duke? Who's that?". Best he can do is say he didn't know of the Duke connection to the group, which won't fly if Duke's name was on the letterhead or if he was on stage with Scalise.

I trust nothing that SPLC has to say, but David Duke's not some Family Research Council type being unfairly tarred as racist. Even SPLC is right once in awhile. It's not completely shocking that a LA pol might troll for votes at a fringe-racist event, but I don't see how he spins this as anything but "racists' votes still count and I wanted them." A pro-Euro culture movement isn't by definition racist, granted, but any group affiliated with a famously-kinda-ex Klansman isn't the best place to start drawing those knd of fine distinctions.
If I decide to start that kind of group, I'm going to make an effort to keep Duke off my organizing committee, just saying. And Duke's association would be enough to say "kryptonite" to anyone who was genuinely trying to steer clear instead of toeing the line and seeking fig leaf pretexts to cover their trolling for the Stormfront vote (Ron Paul, cough, Ron Paul)
I'm not buying that this was a staff-level failure to vet with proper diligence. The name of the group is enough to put you on notice to really check it out before you stump there.

I suspect rooting for Scalise on this would turn out to be the flip side equivalent of using Mike Brown to start a "conversation on race and policing." Right cause, wrong guy. Don't root for someone who'd troll for the racist vote. I'm all for stopping the race card shenanigans but defending the wrong causes in that effort costs credibility.
I hate to preemptively denounce ahead of scorched-earth oppo research type background like this, but playing footsie with Duke's just a bridge too far. Maybe he has a good explanation or the group's being unfairly characterized, but I'm highly skeptical to say the least.

Recently there was a gathering of some pan-euro White People Are Awesome groups in europe -- Hungrary, I think. The cops broke it up. Some American got deported, i think. It was like 50 middle-aged white guys with beards in a pub talking about how Hey, White People Are Pretty Cool or something really mild. They seemed like the least aggressive racists ever.
I can't remember the details. It was funny how meek they were to get raided by the cops -- especially compared to all the angry marching Black Nationalists in the news lately.

But the GOP haven't prepped the battlefield. Not one iota of effort ever devoted to painting those organizations as racially motivated. Hence - those organizations are viewed differently. EVERY race-based organization is viewed differently - except organizations that tout "whiteness".
Personally - I find ANY organization that notes race as somewhat racist by definition - but that's just me. And I'm a dirty no good sorry assed Libertarian - on beer three at the moment.

I have no problem with that truth. I do have a problem with the truth that the same is the case for various black groups out there. Taki's comments sections seem to attract more than a few people with the Buchanan/Duke mentality. I've gone over there to read stuff by Derbyshire and Shaidle, but have learned that the regulars there include more than a few anti-Semites and genuine racists (not just people who don't like Al Sharpton.)

You're probably right, but only if we agree that groups like the NAACP, CBC, and La Raza are also ultimately racist.
There seems to be quite a double standard when it comes to white people. We're the only ones who are expected to be ashamed of our history and culture.
I say the hell with that. The white race is almost entirely responsible for creating the modern world. The rest of the world would still be living in a pre-industrial age if it weren't for our ancestors. That's something to be proud of.
I'd like to be able to judge people "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character", but things seem to be moving in the opposite direction. The Left is succeeding in balkanizing America along racial lines, and the anti-white hatred is being turned up to eleven. As the percentage of the white population continues to shrink in America, that puts me in real danger.

Your first link just showed percentage of Hispanics in Utah. The second link was data from 2007. And no, I wasn't impressed with it. Other data seems to indicate that the outreach of Mormons to Latin America is resulting in more Hispanic Mormons. They could be having more kids because they are Hispanic or because they are Mormon. I'm siding with the Mormon influence because I'd bet there is a drop in Hispanic birth rates in areas where they are successful financially.

I was thinking that myself, at least for central Mexico where Spanish and Aztec genealogy is VERY well-prized. (This is a part of Latin America I've at least visited.) Like how East Coast bluebloods treasure their descent from the Mayflower.
But the average Central American can't do that, for the simple reason that many regions of Mesoamerica were illiterate when the Spaniards came. (Some regions still are.) Oral tradition can pick up the slack, as with the Maya lands ... except where they can't, like in Honduras where the indigenous Lenca culture was basically stamped out with little to replace it with.
I guess I'm back to throwing up my hands, and admitting that "Hispanic" culture doesn't mean anything, because the cultures who use Spanish as a lingua-franca are extremely diverse. Someone from Madrid has absolutely nothing in common with someone from Tegucigalpa.

No, my point was that he did not direct the elimination of bayonet training from the Infantry School curriculum.
That was the Army Chief of Infantry himself. He needed the space for other topics since those other topics were starting to eat into the available training time.
And it was a stupid move.
Either lengthen the school by 2 days or get rid of the bullshit....but 11Bs needed bayonet training.

I grew up in Chicago. The only guns that were around other people's houses (not mine) we're of the hunting variety. Been in Georgia 28 years, and got my first gun 18 years ago. Truly felt like a criminal doing it too, even though it was perfectly legal. So, I know what your husband is feeling. YouTube is a great source of info about care and feeding of an AR, and www.georgiapacking.org is a great community to go to for info for him. There is no sub for range and personal instruction time, but these will help him get the info that he needs to be more conversant about all types of weapons.

The only problem with that is Scalise has said repeatedly he had no idea what the group was all about. As a young state rep he was speaking to any group that asked about his opposition to some spending and tax policies and I've yet to see anyone dispute this or give any other examples of racist activity on his part. Surely it would be coming out by now if there was any.
The EURO group was only around for 2 years before Scalise spoke there and only had that name for 1. I find it a lot more likely that his version is true than he knowingly went to speak to a racist group.

Duke is rightfully a pariah now but at one time he was elected to the LA House and ran in a lot of other campaigns as both a Republican and a Dem. In 1999, just 3 years before this conference, he came in 3rd in the Republican primary for a House seat, just 3000 votes behind Vitter who came in 2nd.
Except his views and his history were well known back then. He wasn't respectable back then either. The fact he was that successful was an embarrassment to our party.

Absolutely. And if Scalise is lying and he really did know what this groups was all about and that it was affiliated with Duke he should at least resign his leadership position.
At the time, Duke was living in Europe and wasn't even attending the conference because the feds were after him so again, it seems plausible to me that Scalise is telling the truth. And yea, with the frequency the left lies I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

So in your opinion, David is a horrible bad person - so bad, that speaking to an affiliated group 12 years ago is grounds for complete alienation from polite society. This is absurd in a country that thinks Freedom of Speech is an inalienable right.

Yeah, yeah, I've tried to learn a few songs on the guitar and found it hard and demanding of practice. Barre chords are evil, etc.

One of my early life mistakes, maybe. Had opportunities to play with several worship bands. Would certainly become a better player.
Of course, we're talking Kentucky. May have got better at other stuff too ...

Rocksmith uses an actual guitar. An Epiphone or Squire will do just fine. And you will learn basic guitar. Both my kids are using it.
