Whose Liberalism? The terms capitalism and communism are the product of the tortured mind of Karl Marx. What we should have is a free market economy. Something that has been very rare here since the early 1900s. Posted by: Vic at December 29, 2014 08:26 AM (u9gzs) 7

Obama's worldview demands major departures from traditional American
foreign policy and threatens to use international agreements to transform domestic policy. Republicans have taken impeachment off the table and told him that. So he will do anything he wants, legal or illegal, but mostly illegal. It will be up to well heeled people to lawyer up and take him to court. He has already lost a major case in PA on his illegal amnesty. But he will ignore it too. Posted by: Vic at December 29, 2014 08:29 AM (u9gzs) 16

The pension article hits one of my many peeves.
Pensioners are an easy group to empathize with ... old folks who worked all their lives and depend on a benefit that was promised them. But what moral justification does a pensioner have for raiding MY checkbook ... in the form of government backed pension guarantees ... when said private company or municipality goes belly up and can't provide said benefit ? I say no justification exists - just another case of picking winners and losers based upon political pull. Posted by: ScoggDog at December 29, 2014 08:42 AM (1vFHw) 30

Posted by: ScoggDog at December 29, 2014 08:42 AM (1vFHw) I posted on that pension thing yesterday. The problem isn't the pension itself. The problem is the government employee unions make sweetheart deals with the politicians for golden pensions and they don't give a damn about what it will cost down the road. And the beleaguered taxpayer gets screwed. And to make matters worse, even when a city declares bankruptcy the judges rule that the pensions can not be renegotiated (that happened in CA) Posted by: Vic at December 29, 2014 08:47 AM (u9gzs) 37

Carol, I've had AmEx deny charges if I use the card for a purchase of greater than $100 or so in a weird place. I hadn't changed our address over yet to the new house with them, and they denied me buying groceries since it was at a strange store. ONce I called and told them that I was me and that we had moved, they fixed everything right up and I haven't had any more issues. I think their fraud algorithm is just a little too strict. I guess that's a good thing though in case someone ever did steal our info.

My two cents CJ ... I think it's more than just the GOP being complicit, although they sure as hell are complicit.
The GOP campaigns to please everybody. Democrats simply do not - and their approach works. It would be EXTREMELY effective for GOP candidates to simply show taxpayers the services public schools cut to pay for school administration and union member benefits. But the GOP simply will not in most cases. Partly complicit, partly just damned complacent. Posted by: ScoggDog at December 29, 2014 09:10 AM (VFat/) 73

Which they've been doing since, roughly, December 2008. The difference this time is that the rest of the world economy is sliding back into the abyss, so our otherwise very modest gains (and all of those despite (or in spite of) government intervention) look colossal. People know what's in their pocket books. Gas down around $2.00/gal when it's been closer to $4 (or 5, or 6) is something people notice. And, yes, the President's party is going to get some (most) of the credit for that- no matter that he was actively working against it. "Necessarily skyrocket" is already in the memory hole, after all. OTOH, since the price of gas is going down because the House of Saud is in a snit against Russia, food prices are *not* going down. People notice that, too. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at December 29, 2014 09:10 AM (kff5f) 75

I already have an Asus Transformer book at home. It's not powerful enough for the development I have to do, but it's plenty fine for documents, web browsing, and some minor games. I love the convertible laptops. Also, it was pretty darn cheap (and for as powerful as it is, that's no small thing). But if you want "real" games, you'll need to look at something tougher. I can't specifically recommend Dell anymore (which pains me- they used to be the best out there), but I'd look at the Inspiron line from Dell as a benchmark of about what kind of power you can expect at what price-point. Lenovo is a pretty solid brand, in my experience. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at December 29, 2014 09:14 AM (kff5f) 82

"historically inaccurate" by whose history? Much of what was going on in the ancient world around then is still more-or-less unknown. Did they screw up the Bible account? External monitors. As a consultant, I work on a laptop anyway. Since you're right- 2 24" screens aren't enough- I already have to deal with external monitors. But right now I have to deal with hauling around a relatively heavy laptop and it's accessories. A Surface Pro is much smaller and lighter, and has the necessary power to do development. From what I understand Exodus is far from historically accurate, and is almost laughably bad, but once again we see the difference between Muslims and Christians.
Christians see a movie that is so warped that it's nearly a parody, and shrug their shoulders and maybe write an article telling other Christians that it's not worth the money. Muslims ban the movie and declare Jihad. Posted by: Lauren at December 29, 2014 09:26 AM (MYCIw) Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at December 29, 2014 09:26 AM (V70Uh) 102
Regarding that fixing article: a lot of new things just can't be fixed economically. You can eBay the parts sometimes, and that can be a good cost savings but ultimately fixing is a dying skill, notable by the fact that there are almost no repair stores left.
But I don't think, ultimately, that's the authors point. He's more annoyed that people don't want to re-purpose all their broken crap and live in a home that looks like the Little Rascals clubhouse. One of my side charity things is to teach people how to repair their old stuff. And the consumer electronics stuff almost always gets thrown away once I tell them all that needs to be replaced or the man-hours it would take to repair it. See, that's just crazy-pants. We know who the historical Moses was (more-or-less). Historians and archeologists have placed the Hebrew Rebellion and Exodus (more-or-less). And both of those things fit up with the Bible account (as far as timing, goes. There's obviously still dispute about the whole 'miracles' and 'plagues' thing). Security chiefs have taken the dramatic step of withdrawing Royal Guards from their high-profile posts outside palaces amid mounting fears of lone wolf terrorist attacks.
Elite soldiers of the Queens Guard have pulled back from public positions at many landmarks in response to possible threats from Islamic extremists. For the first time since the height of the IRAs terror campaign, the soldiers are also no longer allowed on sentry duty alone, and are now accompanied by armed police. The move to more secure positions behind gates or railings is a direct response to attacks such as the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby and the killing of a sentry by a lone gunman at the Canadian Parliament two months ago. Five people were stabbed early Saturday inside a popular Northwest Washington restaurant and bar near George Washington University, and a man wearing a tan trench coat was being sought, police said.
At least two of the victims were seriously injured, but all are expected to survive the attack, which took place about 12:30 a.m. inside McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon at 2401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, said Officer Hugh Carew, a D.C. police spokesman. Police issued a lookout for a black man of medium height, wearing a trench coat, plaid shirt and black or blue jeans. The assailant eluded a police search and was last seen heading east on Pennsylvania Avenue, GWU police said in a campus safety alert issued about 2:30 a.m. Posted by: Van Jones at December 29, 2014 09:38 AM (e8kgV) 130

Associated Press television writer David Bauder raised an interesting question Monday, whether the major TV networks are spending too much time on "flashy" weather stories. Unfortunately, in the process, he printed a needless and demeaning cheap shot at Good Morning America's Ginger Zee, a highly successful and talented broadcast meteorologist.
Bauder, in his piece headlined "Weather porn? Storms take over evening news", interviewed TV news consultant Andrew Tyndall. Tyndall, evidently, believes straight weather coverage is too shallow for the major news networks. Rather than straight weather reporting, he argues, networks should frame weather events in the context of climate change. He uses ABC's Ginger Zee as a pawn to make his point. Honestly, the main reason that the European countries are fighting against restrictions on immigration from majority muslim countries is that they're afraid of the violent backlash. They already have a whole lot of muslims, and those muslims have figured out that violence works to get their way.
Since the available options are "fight back" or "capitulate" and "fight back" means actual fighting with "blood in the streets," they're choosing capitulation. And they're making impossible (or near impossible) for anyone who follows them to reverse that decision because they're more afraid of violence because of doing the right thing than they are of the consequences of doing the wrong thing. Late to the convo. Been using a surface pro 3 as a replacement for a big heavy Dell precision mobile workstation since that one died in October.
Can do most of what I was doing on the SP3 with the exception or hosting a mod sized database. Anything I can't do I push off to a bigger server. Right now I'm waiting for a MS replacement; the screen cracked while I was running to catch a train. The SP3 was riding in a soft messenger bag (laptop pocket). I have just picked up a pelican hard case. I recommend that if you travel with the SP3 you look into some kind of protective case. This doesn't seem to be too unusual an issue (conjecture on my part); Microsoft is replacing the surface at no cost to me and I didn't have to spend too much time explaining what happened. On the Kids These Day Can't Fix Things front, part of the issue is that The One True Tech Company does not allow you to fix their things.
If you can't open it, you don't own it. *dumps kerosene on the naplam to start that war* That being said, I do think there's more than a whiff of get off my lawn about this. It's not necessarily cheaper to fix the broken tech thing. For example, the charging port on my S3 broke, as they are wont to do. Now, I poked around online and found the videos on how to fix it and the place to order the parts and it looked like something that I could do. That would have been around $40-50 and taken some time and held the possibility that I would mess up the phone if I did it incorrectly. For about $25 (yay Priiiiiiimmmmeee), I got a qi charging receiver and a charging pad, slapped the receiver on the battery and, voila, problem solved. Did I fix the phone? But does the phone now charge? Yup. Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD. Mmmm. Blondies with whipped cream. at December 29, 2014 09:58 AM (mf5HN) 181

I've read that Paranoid article before. My take, not surprisingly, is different.
Either Society has changed, or we're just not as happily ignorant. My parents trusted the Brand of Authority - church leaders, scout masters, ball coaches, teachers, and such. Most people I know in my age group - Gen X - just do not. And we think with good reason and ample evidence. The author's tone strikes me as a little Progressive - insisting that we don't believe our lying eyes, and behave contrary to the evidence of a society going down the collective toilet. They have a path to break through that isolation and they should seize it. Because if they do, theres incredible talent and resources and sophistication inside of inside of Iran, and it would be a very successful regional power that was also abiding by international norms and international rules, and that would be good for everybody. That would be good for the United States, that would be good for the region, and most of all, it would be good for the Iranian people. The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has created an example of regulate first and explain why later. In October they proposed new regulations to outlaw strings of bulbs, lighted lawn figures and similar items that would be declared as hazardous. The red tape deals with certifying wire sizes, fuses, and tensile strength of all "seasonal decorative lighting products."
So what is CPSC's justification for adding red tape to the red, green, blue, yellow, white and other colored displays? They report 250 deaths from fires or electrocutions by Christmas lights. That's not 250 deaths per year; it's 250 deaths since 1980. They had to add together 33 years of statistics to misportray danger. CPSC is testing the bounds of the often-heard claim that "If it saves only one life, it's worth it." Do they believe that regulating 100 million holiday items, adding to their $500 million cost, will save one life per year? Or is the true problem not defective products but defective human behavior? No regulation can counteract stupidity; we all do dumb things at times. But fortunately, Clark Griswolds are rare. ... this is the same CPSC that first proposed then backed off requiring that 'marbles' (those glass spheres you called 'Keepsies' as a child), by this I mean each and every marble, have a choking warning on them. As if a child, likely to choke on one, is able to actually read the microscopic warning. Yeah, that didn't happen. We would've broken that law, and too many others would have, too. Posted by: Lizzy at December 29, 2014 10:23 AM (ABcz/) 249

Nah, that's cool, neither have I of late. But I want an option other than "dump the old rig and get a new one", which consoles and Apple (BIRM) force you to do. At least you get several years out of a console, which honestly is better mileage than iStuff gives you. Posted by: Brother Cavil, Unrepresented at December 29, 2014 10:23 AM (DT3rQ) 250
Speaking of that fruity cult, how often do you hear people say "well, my Mac lasts and lasts, whereas your PC needs to be replaced every 2-3 years."
FWIW, I have a pre-unibody MacBook Pro (17") that's still going strong and it's going on eight years old now. That said, I have been tinkering with it to keep it going. I had to replace the cooling fans two years ago which was a not-trivial project to do...it basically involved me disassembling the whole damn thing. And the battery finally gave up the ghost a few months ago, but since it's pre-unibody I could just order a replacement third-party battery and plug it in. It runs Yosemite quite well. And to my kid who wonders why I don't just buy a new MacBook Pro, I tell him that I really doubt I'll get 10+ years of use out of a new one, given that Apple made it such that I can't fix anything in the current gen models. Seriously. Personally I think sprinkles are pointless. I expect my ice cream to have manly peanuts or chocolate syrup if I'm going to top it with something, but the kiddies... who would deny them sprinkles? Nazis, that's who. They don't even realize they are nazis, because they think nazis are synonymous with the right, but they are. Right down to their rotten little black hearts. One person in 10 can be taught to fly an airplane. One pilot in 100 can fly a Jet. One Jet pilot in 100 can fly a fighter. It is much harder to land a fighter on a Carrier than on a fixed runway. Anyone who has flown a fighter is as rare as an NFL player.
During WWII, in the case of the ME-262, the Germans were limited much more by pilots than available jets; they often wound up with Generals flying the Jet fighters. Female F-18 pilots are almost as rare as Elizabeth Warren's Indian ancestors. Posted by: An Observation at December 29, 2014 10:26 AM (ylhEn) 255

I've been coming around on Apple products.
Windows phones have a lot of suck going for them. Nexus phones seem to just change how they work arbitrarily and, let's face it, Google's just creepy. Window's 8 has been nothing but aggravating, too. I picked up my first iPhone earlier this year and it does things I want it to do, in a fairly logical manner; so much so that I'm willing to retry a Macbook. I want all my stuff integrated, which I thought Microsoft was on its way towards, but they really don't have any grand vision for getting it done. This not fixing things story dates to 1993, when I first realized that the world was inexorably going to hell. I had bought printer, the kind that was still modeled on a typewriter so it had a platen and the thing with the two rollers that held the paper to the platen. Well, the little rollers were foam rubber and one of them tore and fell off. So I brought it back to the big box store and said "may I have a new rubber thingie for the platen?" And they said, "no, just take a new printer and we'll send this back to the factory. In China. For one foam rubber thingie. I grew up in the days when things could be fixed and you were expected to be able to. The fascists taught radical Islam much of what it knows about politics. People think it's about religion, because that's the way they disguise it, and that's how they get the ignorant low-life scum to sign on, but the "intellectual" underpinnings that dominate the Wahabist led Islamism came directly from the nazis.
