Israel On Christmas Morning [CBD]

Barry Wilmore woke up early on Christmas morning to take some pictures.....

Israel-NASA.jpg

The lake to the North is the Sea of Galilee, and the larger one to the South is the Dead Sea. I would guess that the blue and green areas to the South of the Dead Sea are salt ponds, but that is a WAG.

The extent of the agricultural development in what used to be arid land -- much of it desert -- is clear. Israel's agronomist's have pushed the envelope of water use to an incredible extent, and their agricultural technology is a world leader. Israel is a major exporter of produce, although the percentage of GDP has fallen because of the rise in other areas (technology is huge, and growing).

1 Sea of Galilee = Lake Tiberias = Lake Kinneret. Swam it.

3 Jews. Is there anything they can't do?

Seriously, that picture is as striking as the one of North Korea at night, a mute reproach to those who say that actions don't matter. Wanna know why Israel is more prosperous than your sorry ass nations Muslims from the middle east? They work hard to be so.

73 Beans are somewhat time consuming to prepare if you get the beans in the package and soak them overnight. However, if you buy a can of black beans or rather kinds of beans (no bakers beans you just rinse them off to get rid of extra sodium, pop them in a pot, add some garlic and a little onion and some spices, hear them up and add some fresh salsa (or canned) with some grated cheddar cheese on top and you have an inexpensive, protein rich meal. And if you're worried about gas add more of them gradually to your diet.

Who knew goldfish got so big.

Two of the best items for saving money are the food vacuum sealer and the pressure cooker.
Pressure cooker lets you use tougher meats and gets you all the nutrients out of things like soup-bones and beans, and the sealer lets you buy and repackage bulk buys.

The third, of course, is to buy jars and lids and start buying and canning fruits in the summer when it is cheap. When you get confidence you can get a pressure canner too and start canning low-acid stuff.

(CNN) -- The Obama administration hopes to transfer dozens of detainees from Guantanamo Bay in the next six months as part of a stepped-up effort to reduce the population there, according to a U.S. official.

As many as five detainees are expected to be moved from the detention facility in the next few days, with several more transfers anticipated in early 2015, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The news comes less than a week after the United States announced it had repatriated four detainees from Guantanamo to Afghanistan, leaving 132 detainees at the U.S. naval base in southeastern Cuba.

Look to the example of one of the greatest Englishmen, Winston Churchill:

"His normal wartime regimen included a glass of white wine at breakfast
(taken as a substitute for tea during the war, when only canned milk was
available). Then, a weak scotch and soda, refreshed with soda
throughout the morning. At lunch, perhaps a port, always Pol Roger
champagne, a brandy or two (likely Hine, and bottled in the previous
century), sometimes a beer. After his nap and before dinner he'd nurse
another whisky (Johnnie Walker Red Label was his favorite brand). At
dinner, more champagne during the meal, followed often by 'several doses
of brandy' in the latter stages. He loved his meals as much as the
libations that accompanied them... Another such drinker would recoil from
food, but Churchill's appetite was unaffected, and he rarely lost
possession of his remarkable faculties..."

112 I cook the top round and such in a dutch oven in the oven with veggies at a low temperature for a couple of hours. You need to check it from time to time to make sure it doesn't boil dry.
Part of the flavor is the slow cooking, which makes it tender, but also the initial browning you do with flour and fat and onions before putting in the veggies and the water to stew it.

I will also leave the lid off the dutch oven at times to allow the veggies to caramelize just a touch.

My modest proposal has been for Israel to buy the Dodecanese Islands from Greece for enough money to get the Greek Government financial house in order, then forcibly move the entire Palestinian population of Gaza and the West Bank to the islands, which are just off the coast of Turkey. Then the Israelis give the islands to the Palestinians who can have their own country or dozen countries if they prefer. After bulldozing Gaza flat, the whole place can be developed as a Mediterranean sea side resort and retirement area for northern Europeans starving for sunlight. The money from condo purchases will pay to retire the debt incurred to purchase the Greek Islands and the increased value and productivity of the land in Gaza and the West Bank will substantially add to an increased Israeli GDP.

141 There are a couple of technologies that I often wonder why Israel does not develop.

One would build on the work of Israel's first President, Chain Weitzman. Weitzman had been a biochemist before WW I. Once everybody realized that the war was not going to be over before the leaves fell and the troops were not going to be home by Christmas, the British faced the problem that the acetone that they used in the production of Cordite, the propellant they used in their small arms and cannon, had previously all been bought from German chemical supply companies and the Germans, for obvious reasons, were not inclined to sell any more to the British.

Weitzman had found a microorganism, Clostridium acetylbutylecium, that ate starch and sugar and excreted acetone as well as ethanol and butynol. The microorganism could be fed in fermentation tanks and the acetone distilled out in whiskey distilleries. That was done and the British did not run out of gunpowder during The Great War. Among the things that a grateful British government did for Dr.Weitzman was the Balfour Declaration.

Anyway the butynol that is produced in the process can be used as fuel in unmodified gasoline engines. Butynol does not absorb water from the air the way ethanol does and the microorganism seems to be less fussy than the yeast that ferments to ethanol as to what it eats. Basically, you can feed it a mixture of molasses and boiled straw and it is quite happy to produce acetone and fuel for you.

The other thing that would seem to make sense for the Israelis to work on would be condensers to pull water out of the atmosphere, sort of like Luke Skywalker's uncle, the moisture farmer. Normal compressor refrigeration based systems would probably use too much electricity to be economical but it seems that something based on absorption refrigerators using the same process as propane refrigerators in an RV could probably use a solar reflector to supply the heat source and could sit out in fields trickling water on to the ground in the Negev desert without requiring any inputs or even much maintenance.

"We are one people," Obama roared, perhaps envisioning his political future as the crowd rose to its feet. "All of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America."

And strangely enough, it was in that very speech that Obama predicted his own demise. Just before his climactic applause line, the future president issued a stark warning.

"Even as we speak," he said, "there are those who are preparing to divide us -- the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers, who embrace the politics of anything goes."

On May 21, 2012, more than three years after he was sworn into office, Obama confessed at a press conference in his hometown, Chicago, that he had become one of those peddlers.

It connects Egypt and Syria, two ancient centres of civilisation. The land route is especially important during storm season in the eastern Med, or if thar be pirates (arr). I think the area was most backwatery when the Persians, Romans, and Europeans were more-or-less keeping the ocean clear.

Now the place is doing well basically because the old rules don't apply anymore - Egypt and Syria both suck, and the place in between is wired into a non-Near-Eastern economy.

I have two Toshibas. My only complaint is slow disk response. If you get one with a second HD slot for an SSD, you can fix that.

The other thing that would seem to make sense
for the Israelis to work on would be condensers to pull water out of the
atmosphere, sort of like Luke Skywalker's uncle, the moisture farmer.
Normal compressor refrigeration based systems would probably use too
much electricity to be economical but it seems that something based on
absorption refrigerators using the same process as propane refrigerators
in an RV could probably use a solar reflector to supply the heat source
and could sit out in fields trickling water on to the ground in the
Negev desert without requiring any inputs or even much maintenance.

I like mine, though you wouldn't want to shoot a hundred rounds through it or anything. A stiffer recoil spring and a much weaker hammer spring, both available from Wolf Springs, make a world of difference from stock. My daughter works at a seafood restaurant and she won't touch the stuff. She says the vast majority of it is farm-raised in China and is...sub-par. Questionable, at best. I was sad to hear it, because it's cheap and I like it OK, but if the safety/quality is iffy, I won't chance it.

USPS flat rate box. No questions axed, came in two days. I bought a 1000 rounds from able's ammo. It fires the Ultra ammo great, but my extra clip is for 380, which you can shot, but not recommended. The 380 mag doesn't feed the Ultra round very well.

I just bought a couple from Wideners ($198 delivered) but haven't gotten them to the range yet. They are slightly lighter than the P64 (alloy frame vs steel), so I would expect a bit more sharpness to them. And they seem more fragile somehow. Plus I don't like the safety as much.

Hate to jump in late, but the salt ponds to the south of the current Dead Sea are the remnants of the old southern part of the Dead Sea.

263 "I would guess that the blue and green areas to the South of the Dead Sea are salt ponds, but that is a WAG."

Technically it's all the Dead Sea, which has been drying up, and the southern half disappearing. They pump water from the northern half to the southern half to keep something there: the aqua part in the upper part of the southern half is a collection of salt and mineral drying ponds, and the darker blue in the southwest part of the southern half is a strip of open water in front of resort hotels popular with Europeans, who value the alleged curative powers of the brine and also value leathery skin. But it's a losing battle; twenty years from now, the southern part will be nothing but a giant salt flat.
