Overnight Open Thread (26 Dec 2014)

Hope all you morons had a good Christmas and got everything you wanted from Santa.

Vets Lives Matter

It sickens me to think that the media has spent way more coverage on Michael Brown than they'll ever do covering the VA cluster fark. More than 500 vets died at VA hospitals due to mistakes.

Thai Rocket Festival

Fast and Furious

No surprise. Belatedly released and revealing Fast And Furious Docs. If only we had more journalists like Attkisson.

Justification for New Gun Control Regulations

ATF's internal Public Affairs Talking Points show the agency was using Fast and Furious to help justify new gun control regulations–without telling the public that ATF was actually facilitating the delivery of weapons to Mexican drug cartels.
The talking points (p. 15) state:

"These cases demonstrate the ongoing trafficking of firearms by Mexican DTO's and other associated groups operating in Arizona and the need for reporting of multiple sales for certain types of rifles in order to ferret out those intent on providing firearms to these criminal groups."

Spider Dress

Robotic spider dress keeps creeps at bay. Nah. It needs some weaponry to keep creeps at bay like a tazer, some pepper spray, some kind of shoulder mounted cannon like the one Predator had.

E.R. Data

Well, if you work in an E.R., you've probably seen one or two of these things that got stuck in body orifices.

"INSERTED A LONG BALLOON IN PENIS TO HAVE GIRLFRIEND BLOW UP FOR SEXUAL STIMULATION AND IT BROKE"

Song Titles

Most decade-specific words in Billboard song titles.

24 So, this happened today:

My almost year-old pup (some of you know Buckley) scooted out the front door and we had to chase him down the street. When we got him home I verbally chastised him while holding him by the scruff. Later, I fell asleep on the couch and when I woke up he had laid a rope pull toy and a pig's ear chew toy on the couch next to me, as if to say, "sorry Dad". He's funny that way.

apropos of the dogs opening gifts video-our newf woke us up yesterday morning because he wanted his presents. 65 Long ago when the world was new, and before I put on a government badge, I worked security at Denver General Hospital. There was a certain "walk" in males as they approached the Triage desk that told us something was where it was not supposed to be. Kind of knock-kneed, pigeon-toed, on the balls of the feet very, very delicate tread.

What we hated [and it was not uncommon] was incandescent light bulbs. They are an absolute bugger [no pun intended] to get out without breaking. But the classic was a someone who came in with a jar of chunky peanut butter, lid intact; inserted where there was no sign of bread or grape jelly. That x-ray stayed on the light box in the radiologists' lounge for weeks. And there was a longer story with that one, that I cannot repeat in order to protect the guilty.

92 If you are a genderqueer lesbian does that mean you think of yourself as a non-woman who is into women, but not as a guy? As in "I'm not a woman, but I'm into women, but I'm not a guy." Is that how it parses out?

Or does it just mean "I'm an enormous bag of used douche fluid that wants to piss in your cereal every minute of every hour of every day just because I'm a cnut and hate myself so much I want to make the entire world suffer because every choice I have ever made in my life has been not only fukced up but entirely my fault and I can't accept that responsibility."

94 Well, if you work in an E.R., you've probably seen one or two of these things that got stuck in body orifices.

A grad school colleague, having decided to go to med school, volunteered weekends at the ER of SF General (note to self: NEVER go to SF General).

Every Monday morning he'd regale us with tales (sp?) of the stuff they'd fished out of fruits' butts that weekend. The worst one? A light bulb.

It's amazing how many guys do housework in the nude and slip and fall onto zucchinis or such on the floor. I'd had no idea.

Yeah, South Carolina was insane. We saw like 6 major (3+ cars or major damage) accidents in the state. Including a car upside down on bridge. That bridge alone had three accidents on it.

Apparently there was an accident well ahead of us. Everyone went from 80mph to 0mph. I hit the brakes. I see I'm not going to be able to stop in time. I'm in the left lane, but I can't pull over into the emergency lane because the cars behind me are pealing off into the emergency lane.

Posted by: Kindltot at December 26, 2014 10:42 PM (t//F+)

I was CNC'ing a logo, dry, in wood. The feed rate was miniscule -- like 225 mm/min, the steps were about 1/8 mm, and the tool was 1/4 mm across. It came out with a gorgeous finish but I screwed up the index point and part of the design is off the wood....which doesn't really matter much because I can now see issues with the source artwork.

Seriously, the finish is gorgeous -- it's smoother in the machined part than In the unmachined -- and I prepped that by sanding at 220 grit with a random orbital.

259 Had a guy come in for abdominal pain. He was doubled over because he hurt so bad. X-ray showed a foreign object approximately 7 inches in length. Plus a ton of stool up above it that couldn't push by. ER doc was unable to reach the object and we admitted him for surgical removal. Wife walked out of the ER while the doc was explaining to the patient what they found and the need for surgery. She never came to see him in the hospital. A few days later, I was told it was a broom handle that he had cut and lacquered and it appeared to be well used.

Long ago when the world was new, and before I put on a government badge,
I worked security at Denver General Hospital. There was a certain
"walk" in males as they approached the Triage desk that told us
something was where it was not supposed to be. Kind of knock-kneed,
pigeon-toed, on the balls of the feet very, very delicate tread.

What
we hated [and it was not uncommon] was incandescent light bulbs. They
are an absolute bugger [no pun intended] to get out without breaking.
But the classic was a someone who came in with a jar of chunky peanut
butter, lid intact; inserted where there was no sign of bread or grape
jelly. That x-ray stayed on the light box in the radiologists' lounge
for weeks. And there was a longer story with that one, that I cannot
repeat in order to protect the guilty.

Christmas technically last until Epiphany, which is January 6th. I always give Thor a present, in honor of the day and leave all my decorations and the trees up til then.

And by "til then" I mean like the middle of February because I love it so much!

But certainly never before January 6th, even when I was working full time.

Wife calls office, gets told that he is at DGH ER, no other details. She's thinking heart attack. Comes in like a Bann Sidhe on meth. Hence the waiting interval. I'm figuring on the one-hour-per-ounce-of-alcohol metabolism rate to clear the system of alcohol before doing the percocet. Should be okay some time around . . . well . . . now. Will probably hold off until midnight Central just to be extra special nice to the liver. Or, maybe I might just try to get by with ibuprofen and ice tonight.

Thing is, they're never cute, which is probably half the problem.

There was a very thoughtful reply on that post...it was a lady who said she knew she was a girl, but she never liked makeup or dresses or anything like that, and liked wearing comfortable clothes like sweatshirts and tennies and such. She wears her hair short and apparently binds herself, so she probably finds her boobs get in the way, which they certainly can.

I know ladies like that, very tomboyish and they might be lesbians, I don't know. But I mean, I think there have always been folks like this, probably a little more testosterone or estrogen in them than the average person of their sex, depending, but I just don't think it's anything new.

I think it's the ones who are that way PLUS are mentally unstable that get all crazed, and then they jump on the oppression/victinm train.

Hello!!!! Long time, no see! How are you?

I'd say your average gay person is fine, but the really emotional flaming queeny guys, and the really really butch vicious women... I don't think mental illness causes it, but maybe they get mental because of the hormonal imbalances?

Or like that PIV blog lady.. she is mentally ill, there is no doubt in my mind. I just don't think her being lesbian is what made her that way.

Many of the extreme cases do seem mentally ill to me, but I know plenty of folks who are batshit crazy and straight, too.

That sucks.

Me, I can plot out whole science fiction novels while zonked out on percocet, in detail. Killer, blockbuster plots, that keep me from getting sweet, sweet sleep. Then the percocet wears off, and I just lay there, tired, the pain returning, and still unable to negotiate the distance from the bed to the keyboard and even if I could, there's a certain lack of authorial talent which I have yet to overcome.

But man, those percocet novel plots are GOOD!

Hear hear, Tammy. I think you're on to something here. :-)

Most gay people are NOT the people/images that TV and the rest of the media love to pummel everyone with. They're not queens, drama or otherwise, aren't obsesses with sex, and just want to get the bills paid and the job done like everyone else. I don't think most gays have a chip on their shoulder about it, either, so long as their their jobs and everyday life is going smoothly.

Let's also admit: a lot of drag queens, gay or straight, are flaming because they can make a lot of money marketing themselves that way, not because they're actually mega-promiscuous.

I think it's a case where mental illness/personality disorders/self-destructive behavior draws some folks to alternative lifestyles because they're more likely to escape notice or judgment.

The gay gentlemen living down the street who run a business? They're probably sane. The folks parading down Main Street in leather thongs, or declaring how horrible it is that they should have to hide their open marriage from society, or the girl who thinks that lesbianism is an act of transgressive politics? They're probably dealing with mental illness.

Cthulhu,

What is CNC? I have absolutely no clue.

Did you have Merry Christmas?

Anna Puma,

I didn't ask or wish you ea Merry Christmas specifically either. It's because I was busy Christmas Eve Christmas Day.

Nothing intentional.

Today I was watched Band of Brothers because my older brother won't
tell me how my father's platoon (right term?) almost missed Battle of
the Bulge until I watch it, he's been trying to tell me for years to
watch it's very close to my father's WWII stories. I watched 4
episodes since Saturday.

Posted by: Carol at December 26, 2014 11:58 PM (sj3Ax)

CNC is technically "computer numerical control" -- but it's just setting up a tool so that it runs a series of steps by itself. In the case of the run I just did, I had my little indoor mill run 33,698 steps that I could manually do with equal precision on my bigger mill outside. Each step is like "go from X (left to right) 32.050mm, Y (back to front) 0.360mm, Z (up/down) -0.519mm to X 31.800mm, Y 0.360mm, Z -0.527mm. As you might imagine, doing 33 thousand of these without supervision can lead to some fun results that you really can't do manually.

We had a nice enough Christmas. The fiancee slept in a bit (which was very good, because her busy period at work is right before Christmas), and then we went to see The Hobbit.

It's like once the buzz wears off, the pain is worse than it was before I took it , so it's not worth it. (Of all the opiates, I do find Percocet works better than naything else, including the infamous HillBilly Heroin, which didn't impress me much with its pain killing properties and makes me puke my innards up hours after I take it)

Are you hard to numb at the dentist office, too, by any chance? They just automatically bust out the caulk-gun looking equipment for me now.

Was it you, OG Celt, who mentioned the Vicoprofen many moons ago?

My doc at the time said it wasn't in the formulary for my HMO, but to take an Advil and a Vicodin for the same effect. It certainly did work far better than the Vicodin alone, which doesn't help my pain at all.

Lord, there WAS a flurry of trades there, no? I try so hard to keep up, but by January, I'm all, fuck it, I"ll catch up the first week of April.

Sorry to see the Braves traded whatisname, with the pretty smile, Irvin Santana, maybe? They had several pitchers with the similar names, I can't keep track, but he was charming.

Everybody has different nerves and reactions. My husband takes so much morphine I fear he will never poo again, and barely gets pain relief. I've met people who actually get pain relief from tylenol. I can't imagine.

I take a little opioid for my neck, and it helps, but it doesn't so much get the pain as make me not care so much about it. I think it would take much more to really cure the pain itself.

I have a good pain doc, but not everyone does. He will try just about anything, which is great when you need relief.

508 The other issue is healing--if you are in pain, you will not heal as well or as quickly. Even if you still feel pain, the painkillers often make the healing easier as they will relax you somewhat. Lower your blood pressure, that sort of thing.

I read a study recently where redheads have a much higher tolerance to pain meds. My anecdotal experience backs up exactly what was described.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at December 27, 2014 12:14 AM

I understand, individuals tolerances vary greatly. Most pain meds do not much for me either after a few days. It's not a good trait to have, often leads some to addictions.

And it's the same w/ alcohol, a higher tolerance might be thought to be a good thing, but it easier leads to alcoholism.

Putting that aside, glad to hear you all were OK in the accident. Traveling around Phoenix I've narrowly avoided a couple this holiday. Be well BC.

The pressure is put on doctors and hospitals to do whatever possible to get rid of the pain. When I was in a medical hold unit we saw a lot of this. Soldiers had injuries that meant they would never be completely free of pain, but doctors were pushed to prescribe stronger and stronger drugs. Those drugs were easier than physical therapy exercises and weight loss that they were told was necessary.

Sure that happens, there are many abusers out there. Also many w/ chronic conditions that need to find something that can help them function day to day.

I had congenital hip dysplasia that was never diagnosed and by age 50 left me crippled, and the pain meds never helped much. If it wasn't for 2 recent surgeries I'd be incapacitated. But still have sciatica, it'll never be normal.

Further update on the CNC -- the original workpiece is Yellowheart. I've
now pressed blue polymer clay into part of the design with the back of a
chisel, and it's in the oven. When it comes out, I'll press gold
polymer clay into the other part and oven it again. Tomorrow, I'll sand
it smooth with 220 grit, then go for final surface with 320.

The pressure on doctors to relieve pain is part of it but in the private sector it's more about making money and path of least resistance. More and more pain clinics are opening and they are no different than drug dealers by keeping the customers hooked. Many of the clinics have their hand in ancillary medical services , ie ; drug testing, diagnostic testing, durable medical equipment. Some drugs that were developed for end stage cancer pain has been now prescribed for 'chronic' ortho injuries. It's out of control.

552 And the gold is in the oven. I had been concerned that the polymer clay might have shrinkage while baking or might not sand flat, but it seems to be behaving.

Hope that works out for you, best of luck. I'm off to bed, that flight tomorrow is early. Maybe I can finally sleep. Hope this ONT doesn't give me nightmares, IYKWIM.

553 Farmer-- I get that there are ppl with chronic and/or excruciating pain.

The ones I'm referring to, are playing their dr's for pills (even sometimes joke about it or sell their 'extras').

But in *certain company* they're all...."omg, the pain, the pain, omg"

554 Your lips are moving,
I cannot hear.
Your voice is soothing,
But the words aren't clear.

You don't sound different,
I've learnt the game.
I'm looking through you,
You're not the same.

555 Best ONT comments in weeks, Horde. Too bad I gotta turn in. If only . . . aw hell, what's the use. Will check in again in a few days.

556 And, yes, agree with Bob that there are whole clinics dedicated to sucking up the insurance money/co-pays without exerting any more effort than writing those scripts.

558 G'night everyone. I'll leave you with this pilfered poetry.

A strand of silver hanging through the sky
Touching more than you see
The voice of ages in your mind
Is aching with the dead of the night
Precious life (your tears are lost in falling rain)

And if you hear me talking on the wind
You've got to understand
We must remain
Perfect Strangers

I used to think I had a fair grasp of abstract concepts...until I read about Schrodinger's Cat....I can't even make stuff like that up.

562 So their was a bunch of fights in a mall near me last night (Monroeville Mall). Police say 1000 people. Urban crowd. Would be nice if we had national leadership, as this type of activity is happening all over the country.
