So, this happened today:
My almost year-old pup (some of you know Buckley) scooted out the front door and we had to chase him down the street. When we got him home I verbally chastised him while holding him by the scruff. Later, I fell asleep on the couch and when I woke up he had laid a rope pull toy and a pig's ear chew toy on the couch next to me, as if to say, "sorry Dad". He's funny that way. Long ago when the world was new, and before I put on a government badge, I worked security at Denver General Hospital. There was a certain "walk" in males as they approached the Triage desk that told us something was where it was not supposed to be. Kind of knock-kneed, pigeon-toed, on the balls of the feet very, very delicate tread.
What we hated [and it was not uncommon] was incandescent light bulbs. They are an absolute bugger [no pun intended] to get out without breaking. But the classic was a someone who came in with a jar of chunky peanut butter, lid intact; inserted where there was no sign of bread or grape jelly. That x-ray stayed on the light box in the radiologists' lounge for weeks. And there was a longer story with that one, that I cannot repeat in order to protect the guilty. Worked in the GI Lab of a major HMO in SoCal for years. Light bulbs and Coke bottles were pretty routing. The string of Christmas lights was my personal favorite.

People always ask me what I think is or was the best and most realistic medical show on tv. I always tell them Scrubs. The "Ass Box" episode was THE best!
One of my former co-workers went to interview his patient, and it was his old HS math teacher. Final investigation was death by misadventure & failure to seek care resulting in septic shock during lesbian 'island religion' coven ritual. Miami. 90's. What were you CNC-ing Cthulhu? That is a big run. Posted by: Kindltot at December 26, 2014 10:42 PM (t//F+) I was CNC'ing a logo, dry, in wood. The feed rate was miniscule -- like 225 mm/min, the steps were about 1/8 mm, and the tool was 1/4 mm across. It came out with a gorgeous finish but I screwed up the index point and part of the design is off the wood....which doesn't really matter much because I can now see issues with the source artwork. Seriously, the finish is gorgeous -- it's smoother in the machined part than In the unmachined -- and I prepped that by sanding at 220 grit with a random orbital. Had a guy come in for abdominal pain. He was doubled over because he hurt so bad. X-ray showed a foreign object approximately 7 inches in length. Plus a ton of stool up above it that couldn't push by. ER doc was unable to reach the object and we admitted him for surgical removal. Wife walked out of the ER while the doc was explaining to the patient what they found and the need for surgery. She never came to see him in the hospital. A few days later, I was told it was a broom handle that he had cut and lacquered and it appeared to be well used.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 26, 2014 11:18 PM (0kLcL) Hell yes!!! All those drinking! Raise your glasses for Nearsider and his new boy! May all the blessing of our Lord touch your life today. May He send His little angels to protect you on your way. Such a wee little fit, sent from above. Someone so precious to cherish and love. May sunshine and moonbeams dance over you head As you quietly slumber in your bed. May good luck be with you wherever you go. And your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow. Further update on the CNC -- the original workpiece is Yellowheart. I've now pressed blue polymer clay into part of the design with the back of a chisel, and it's in the oven. When it comes out, I'll press gold polymer clay into the other part and oven it again. Tomorrow, I'll sand it smooth with 220 grit, then go for final surface with 320.

Thing is, they're never cute, which is probably half the problem. There was a very thoughtful reply on that post...it was a lady who said she knew she was a girl, but she never liked makeup or dresses or anything like that, and liked wearing comfortable clothes like sweatshirts and tennies and such. She wears her hair short and apparently binds herself, so she probably finds her boobs get in the way, which they certainly can. I know ladies like that, very tomboyish and they might be lesbians, I don't know. But I mean, I think there have always been folks like this, probably a little more testosterone or estrogen in them than the average person of their sex, depending, but I just don't think it's anything new. I think it's the ones who are that way PLUS are mentally unstable that get all crazed, and then they jump on the oppression/victinm train. Hear hear, Tammy. I think you're on to something here. :-) Most gay people are NOT the people/images that TV and the rest of the media love to pummel everyone with. They're not queens, drama or otherwise, aren't obsesses with sex, and just want to get the bills paid and the job done like everyone else. I don't think most gays have a chip on their shoulder about it, either, so long as their their jobs and everyday life is going smoothly. Let's also admit: a lot of drag queens, gay or straight, are flaming because they can make a lot of money marketing themselves that way, not because they're actually mega-promiscuous. The gay gentlemen living down the street who run a business? They're probably sane. The folks parading down Main Street in leather thongs, or declaring how horrible it is that they should have to hide their open marriage from society, or the girl who thinks that lesbianism is an act of transgressive politics? Posted by: Carol at December 26, 2014 11:58 PM (sj3Ax) CNC is technically "computer numerical control" -- but it's just setting up a tool so that it runs a series of steps by itself. In the case of the run I just did, I had my little indoor mill run 33,698 steps that I could manually do with equal precision on my bigger mill outside. Each step is like "go from X (left to right) 32.050mm, Y (back to front) 0.360mm, Z (up/down) -0.519mm to X 31.800mm, Y 0.360mm, Z -0.527mm. As you might imagine, doing 33 thousand of these without supervision can lead to some fun results that you really can't do manually. We had a nice enough Christmas. The fiancee slept in a bit (which was very good, because her busy period at work is right before Christmas), and then we went to see The Hobbit. Hello!!!! Long time, no see! How are you?
I'd say your average gay person is fine, but the really emotional flaming queeny guys, and the really really butch vicious women... I don't think mental illness causes it, but maybe they get mental because of the hormonal imbalances? Or like that PIV blog lady.. she is mentally ill, there is no doubt in my mind. I just don't think her being lesbian is what made her that way. Many of the extreme cases do seem mentally ill to me, but I know plenty of folks who are batshit crazy and straight, too. I am clear as mud here, I know! Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at December 27, 2014 12:06 AM (SmzxV) **** The issue seems simple, but it is Not. Bottom line is that if you currently don't care, you will be made to care. And not in a way that is any kinda good for what they are espousing. You'd better keep praying you don't end up like I am, living life in pain despite meds. I have to add F The JEF because he is a tyrant & DEA changed one that worked best on me from Schedule III to II. I suppose I have a high tolerance for pain meds, although that's not how I'd describe it.
They just generally don't work for me as well as NSAIDS, and in fact they can amp the pain after a few hours for me, which I know sounds crazy. It's like once the buzz wears off, the pain is worse than it was before I took it , so it's not worth it. (Of all the opiates, I do find Percocet works better than naything else, including the infamous HillBilly Heroin, which didn't impress me much with its pain killing properties and makes me puke my innards up hours after I take it) Are you hard to numb at the dentist office, too, by any chance? They just automatically bust out the caulk-gun looking equipment for me now. Was it you, OG Celt, who mentioned the Vicoprofen many moons ago? My doc at the time said it wasn't in the formulary for my HMO, but to take an Advil and a Vicodin for the same effect. It certainly did work far better than the Vicodin alone, which doesn't help my pain at all. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at December 27, 2014 12:29 AM (SmzxV) 467

The other issue is healing--if you are in pain, you will not heal as well or as quickly. Even if you still feel pain, the painkillers often make the healing easier as they will relax you somewhat. Lower your blood pressure, that sort of thing.
Opioids usually make me puke, too, so there's always compazine. Then you are really mellow. Posted by: tcn in AK, almost at December 27, 2014 12:51 AM (g+qqc) 509

Well, I'm at work so unless the phone rings or a piece of equipment goes down somewhere, I won't have anything distracting me from Prometheus. The problem is my wee little mind is wondering, thinking things like what I need to buy at the grocery story tomorrow morning when I get off work. Posted by: puddleglum@work at December 27, 2014 12:29 AM (20X6f) Equipment tech? Dentist gave me Vicoden and Percocet (two different visits) after oral surgery, I was very disappointed in both. I'd heard about how they send you off on a trip and no need to leave the house, but they did NOTHING for me. Squat. Not even a fuzzy feeling. Excedrin did a better job on the pain. So now I usually refuse pain meds when they are offered. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at December 27, 2014 12:45 AM (6fyGz) When I was growing up, everyone always talked about aspirin for headaches, aspirin for body-aches, aspirin for pain relief....but the only thing that worked for me was aspirin for breaking a fever -- it might as well have been spearmint certs for anything else. The caffeine in Excedrin helps the pain fighting properties. I've never seen the movie, but I've read the book. I've heard that the movie was a good adaptation. Posted by: cthulhu at December 27, 2014 12:36 AM It was. Do see it. Around the time it came out, I was kinda disappointed with it as it left a lot out... but... over time I reckon now it's actually better than the book in many ways. There's a lot of punch in the movie that isn't delivered as well as the book and the abridged nature of the story actually works in it's favour... hard to explain. WORD. I have never gotten the slightest bit of relief from Tylenol, ever. Not the stuff with codeine in it, even. Me, the doc prescribes me a dose. In 3 days, I take it and it's like I took nothing. So I take a second pill. Then, in 3 days, nothing again.
Like I said, long term, that's going to be a real problem. I read a study recently where redheads have a much higher tolerance to pain meds. My anecdotal experience backs up exactly what was described. Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at December 27, 2014 12:14 AM I understand, individuals tolerances vary greatly. Most pain meds do not much for me either after a few days. It's not a good trait to have, often leads some to addictions. And it's the same w/ alcohol, a higher tolerance might be thought to be a good thing, but it easier leads to alcoholism. Putting that aside, glad to hear you all were OK in the accident. Traveling around Phoenix I've narrowly avoided a couple this holiday. Be well BC. Posted by: Farmer at December 27, 2014 01:00 AM (S7Jz2) 522

Posted by: Bob Belcher at December 27, 2014 01:17 AM (3jmxp) The pressure is put on doctors and hospitals to do whatever possible to get rid of the pain. When I was in a medical hold unit we saw a lot of this. Soldiers had injuries that meant they would never be completely free of pain, but doctors were pushed to prescribe stronger and stronger drugs. Those drugs were easier than physical therapy exercises and weight loss that they were told was necessary. Posted by: Colorado Alex at December 27, 2014 01:34 AM (CwyAm) 545

Also many w/ chronic conditions that need to find something that can help them function day to day. Posted by: cthulhu at December 26, 2014 11:44 PM (T1005) And the gold is in the oven. The pressure on doctors to relieve pain is part of it but in the private sector it's more about making money and path of least resistance. More and more pain clinics are opening and they are no different than drug dealers by keeping the customers hooked. Many of the clinics have their hand in ancillary medical services , ie ; drug testing, diagnostic testing, durable medical equipment. Some drugs that were developed for end stage cancer pain has been now prescribed for 'chronic' ortho injuries. It's out of control. Posted by: Bob Belcher at December 27, 2014 01:54 AM (3jmxp) 550
