All I Want For Christmas [OregonMuse]

drueke pieces.jpg

Only chess nerds will appreciate this, but here goes: last summer, my daughter was antique shopping found a set of small Drueke chess pieces (2.5" King) in a wooden box with a sliding top. Her SIL noticed it first, but didn't think they were of any value, because they were only plastic pieces. Not an unreasonable assumption, but, in this case, simply wrong. Muse Daughter, who plays chess and who has seen similar Drueke sets go on eBay for $80 and more, immediately snapped it up and gladly paid the $20 asking price. She thought the pieces-in-box would make the perfect Christmas gift for her dear old dad who always has been devilishly hard to shop for, and she was right. I don't think the wooden box is a Drueke product, but I don't care, it's very nice. A very lovely and thoughtful gift from my dear daughter.

So what did you morons get for Christmas?

Bonus: Here's a another entry from the young woman I linked to the other day. She really does not like Al Sharpton very much. Warning for NSFW language:

anyway, can we keep this in mind? from yahoo news (take note of the last line):

President Barack Obama marked the end of more than a decade of combat in Afghanistan by paying tribute to America's military, telling troops on Christmas Day that their sacrifices have allowed for a more peaceful, prosperous world to emerge out of the ashes of 9/11.

At an oceanfront Marine Corps base in Hawaii, Obama told troops that while tough challenges remain for the U.S. military in hotspots like Iraq and West Africa, the world as a whole is better off because American troops put country first and served with distinction. He said Americans and their president could not be more thankful.

"Because of the extraordinary service of the men and women in the American armed forces, Afghanistan has a chance to rebuild its own country," Obama said to applause from Marines and their families. "We are safer. It's not going to be a source of terrorist attacks again."

14 23-year-old med student Sylwia Rajchel from Poland decided to take a break from her studies by vacationing in Spain. While on the ledge of the Puente de Triana, Rajchel tried to take a selfie. Unfortunately, she lost her footing and fell 15 feet, landing on concrete footing that is part of the bridge's support system, reports the New York Post.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only incident of its kind. The U.S. Forest Service, for example, has to warn visitors of taking selfies with feeding bears. A Mexican man died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while taking a gun selfie. Rajchel's death serves as an ominous reminder that taking dangerous selfies simply isn't worth the risk.

23 I have a somewhat older set of chess pieces (I'm guessing circa late 40s early 50s) that were my Dad's. They aren't "Drueke", but are a very similar style, smaller, and shinier plastic. Several had the heavy "chalk-ish" felt-covered weights come off the bottom, which I've had to re-glue. But they came in the same kind of wooden box with the sliding cover.

Because, as of today we are redefining terrorism to mean "something done by GEORGE BUUUUUUSH!!!! & the evil Republikkkans". Since no-one in Afghanistan is GEORGE BUUUUUUUUSH!!!!! or an evil Republikkkan, they can't be terrorists. Thank you, & good night.

26 From the Denton Home Invasion piece (main page sidebar)

"Terrence was the only child [his mother, Donna Tusan] had left, and now he is gone, too," said Nevels, who the newspaper reported was speaking on behalf of the Tusan family. "We just want to ask anyone looking into this incident to investigate further."

The kid was committing a home-invasion robbery. What "further" is there to investigate? You force your way into a home where the home-owner has ready access to guns (especially with you or one of your buddies also packing) and you take your own chances.

Why is it that some people have such a problem with the concept of personal responsibility?

Naaa. Mine's not that bad. Radial head from one of the forearm bones into the elbow itself has what I call (I don't know the technical name for it) a "chip fracture." At this point it doesn't even hurt anymore, and my ROM (range of motion- not the other kind) is nearly back to 100%.

I've read about 180 pages so far and what makes it particularly interesting is that the author-John Drury- is a chaplain at All Saints College at Oxford so he adds a understanding of faith and theology that a more conventional biography by a person of no religious faith might not be able to appreciate or understand.

Visited with my family member serving over in Hawaii and the prezzy's name came up because the beach area where he is staying is off limits to everyone while he is there. It is a beach the military families use. The fine for getting in there, $40,000. So while he does some R&R the military families and any out of town guest they have can't go in there.

But he set the tone upon arrival....there was a welcoming ceremony created for him by the military. People were there waiting and prezzy decided to forgo stopping in to say hi and shake a hand or two.

82 There are chess lessons online for about $150 or so that step you through the more advanced parts of the game. Learning how to play well is on my goal list.

One thing that is interesting is the effects of concentration on your ability to play. After I broke my elbow, I decided to work on improving my brain with many mental exercises, including concentration exercises.

I couldn't concentrate for longer than 1 minute when I began. Over the course of 3 weeks, I built myself up to over an hour, 3 times a day.

At the beginning of the concentration experiments, I could barely beat my computer chess game on level 2. After a few weeks, I could win playing level 10, the highest setting, black. I didn't play chess often during that time so I think very little improvement was because of practice.

Depends
a little on the material, but if you- gently!- scrape it with a
straight razor to get the majority of the wax out, then soak and rinse
in very hot water, it might work. Not an expert, though. And I wouldn't
recommend doing it with a white cloth, in case the dye stains.

I have no idea where they went, but there's a modest possibility they're in a pile of boxes in my storage room.

So you may have just committed me to spending the next week of free moments rooting around in there and pissing everyone else in the house off in the process.

Thanks a lot. Thanks. A. Lot.

(but kinda-sorta thank you, as it's one small question-mark from one's childhood checked off, whether or not I ever find them, and I liked them a lot. As I understand it, they never actually broke the ENIGMA code. Rather, they figured out that most Germans were using the same encryption keys (ish) at the beginning of their messages. So while they could never "break" ENIGMA (such that they could always know what was being said), nevertheless they could "decode" a fair majority (I heard 80+%) of the messages the Nazis were sending.

That's a pretty big "aside from." At age 12 (IIRC) he was arguing Theology with the priests and teachers of the law- and winning.

Of course, there's also the bit where very few believe his actual birth date was the ancient Roman equivalent of 12/25. The bit where his "changing the world" thing happened after he was 30 (not before). And a whole host of other things I'm sure he thinks he "knows" which are probably completely wrong.

One of the more plausible stories I've heard gives a birth date on or about 17 April, 6 BC because of certain astronomical events, and from what I understand what records still exist from the era tend to back up the story that a census was being undertaken around that time for taxing purposes.

Either way, December 25 was chosen, so I've heard, because on the year it was chosen it was the date of the winter solstice, which was a pagan holiday (the early church was famous for adopting pagan holiday dates for their own purposes) celebrating new beginnings. Pretty appropriate, no?

An axe or sword would be good, she could just cut them off at the knees, literally, and then look them eye to eye as she removes their head from the rest of the body. Or maybe the Claw. I mean, after all, once you have them by the nuts, their hearts and minds will follow. But she may be a bit too dainty for that kind of action. A flamethrower? Then she could have light by which she could read her various tomes of spells and enchantments.
It is a puzzle, to be sure.

Simply getting to Africa from the Levant would be quite an undertaking. Crossing the ocean to a South America that nobody at the time even knew existed? Several orders of magnitude more effort.

261 I got gifts of candy, nuts, and underwear, but I wish people would not give me gifts at all. I gave a can of fancy coffee to my gf.

Best thing this Christmas was that new Gospel of John KJV movie on Netflix streaming. Very realistic, very well cast, and I've spent hours mulling it over after seeing it. I'm not deeply religious, but I do like to read from Gospels or watch a Jesus movie on Christmas and Easter.

262
A collision between two women using walkers has resulted in a felony
charge of intimidation and misdemeanor counts of assault and criminal
mischief for Joyce Marie Renfroe, 62, of Hamilton.
According to court records, Renfroe had words with her roommate, Jeanne Hatfield, at about 10 p.m. on Dec. 8.
Renfroe told an investigating officer later they had been fighting over finances.
At
the time of the alleged incident, Hatfield was standing in the hallway
with her walker when Renfroe exited her bedroom with her own walker.
At
that point, court records said that Renfroe told Hatfield to get out of
the way or she was going to run her over. Renfroe then proceeded down
the hallway with her walker and ran into Hatfield.

263 Either way, December 25 was chosen, so I've heard, because on the year it was chosen it was the date of the winter solstice, which was a pagan holiday (the early church was famous for adopting pagan holiday dates for their own purposes) celebrating new beginnings. Pretty appropriate, no?

According to Augustine of Hippo, the date was chosen because early Christians adopted the contemporary Jewish belief that prophets always died on the date they were conceived. 12/25 is nine months after Easter, as they calculated it. That is also why the Eastern Orthodox Church has a different Christmas - they calculated the date of Eastern differently from the Western church.

So, it likely had nothing to do with whatever holiday the Romans celebrated on eth 25 - it was simply the date that they thought was correct in the early centuries AD.

264 My big historical interest is war, primarily the second world war. But religion intrigues me. There is much that I don't know. I'm not a religious man, but I lean toward Judaism, and I do have a genealogical precedent on my mother's side. At my age, you start to yearn for that foundation when your mortality is starting to catch up to you.

268 I received a wire cutter that snips through 1/8-inch steel cable like my other cutter handles lamp cord. There are compound levers to multiply its shear force and hardened cutting edges.

A box set of Murakami's three-volume novel 1Q84.

A mess o' Gold Toe socks that don't bunch up inside any shoe or boot. They stay warm and dry and tight on my calves.

Faded Glory sweatshirts in two colors I don't already have, giving me a five-day rotation of my standard uniform.

Two different Madame Vastra/Jenny Flint T-shirts.

A CD I had never heard from the band Clam Chowder.

269 I got a pair of socks with multi-colored octopuses on them, chocolate covered cherries, a hairbrush, and slippers. (We go light on the presents for the adults in the family. The kid and the dog rake in the loot.)

Looking forward to making the Brandy Alexander pie for New Year's Eve!

270 Wait, these chess pieces are A Thing? I have that exact set and that exact box. Except, my pieces are all wood. Obviously turned on a lathe. The Parental Units probably bought them in the '60s. For some reason there are two extra white rooks in the box. Hmmm.

Look down at one of the rooks from the top. Does it say 'Drueke' in the center?

Also, how tall is the King?

276 My favorite chess set is one I bought from the U.S. Chess Federation in the 1980s. It was made in India. The white pieces are boxwood and the black pieces are rosewood. The kings are 3 5/8", and the knights are in one piece with a turned base and hand-carved head. There's also an extra queen for each color, which is a nice touch.

It's an absolutely gorgeous set. It came in a wooden box that was not felt-lined, so I bought sheets of adhesive-backed felt and took care of that myself. I think it cost about $50-60, which seemed like a lot of money to me at the time. I bet it would be worth a lot more than that today.

288 The chess set brings back memories. When I played tournament chess I had a set exactly like that. The box is original. Like another commenter I paired it with a plastic dual clock and a roll-up cream-and-green vinyl board. Long time ago...

289 Oh good God! That was my second chess set, back in high school. I literally wore it out. The tops of the bishops came loose (Duco cement), then the weights came out (Duco cement) then the felts came loose (new green felt and Duco cement). Nice to see somebody with taste saw the quality. Good times.
