Christmas Morning Open Thread [krakatoa]

Merry Christmas, everyone.

This year, we have cured our own ham, and by the time you are reading this, it has found its way into the smoker for the first 3 hours of today's voyage.

With luck, most of the horde won't read this, and are instead doing the important work of properly celebrating Christmas.

It took me a terribly long time to find love for this holiday for reasons far too personal and, frankly, too boring to relate. Thanks mostly to my wife, I came around.

And this year I have been absolutely exhilarated at the prospect of this day, this first Christmas with our daughter.

Soraya's First Santa Train. A long and hallowed tradition she treated with all the attention she could muster.

May you all be filled with peace and joy this Day.

It appears I will be here at the mothership till 11 and then its off to Casa De Rocketship for a few hours of sleep before I com back in for 6 more hours of merriment. Fortunately at 6:20 CST I bolt for the doors and head into the weekend. Yay, if I stay away from the tv and radio maybe my BP will remain manageably low so I can play with my bikes enough to get them closer to running condition. My Christmas present to myself so to speak.

I hope everyone got what they wanted and if not, there's always return Friday.

Krakatoa, your child will be the best thing that will ever happen to you, enjoy because they grow up all to fast.

32 As mentioned in the ONT, today is the 100th anniversary of one of the most remarkable events of World War I, or indeed of any war: the Christmas Truce.

The war began at the end of July and was less than five months old. In the beginning, most people on both sides expected a short, sharp, decisive war, but by December it had degenerated into a bloody stalemate. The number of casualties was already shocking by that point.

Starting on Christmas Eve, soldiers on both sides met in No Man's Land between the trenchlines to bury their dead and exchange presents.

It's still quiet here. I'm the only one up. The ham is smoking. The kitchen is clean in preparation for a day of deliciousness. Breakfast is to be stuffed french toast and bacon.

The big meal of the day is to be Ham, taters, dressing, asparagus, all accompanied by smoky pig gravy, hollandaise, & bacon.

Desert may just be candied bacon and bourbon.

47 When the leadership on both sides got wind of the Truce and that their frontline soldiers were openly fraternizing with the enemy, they threatened disciplinary action and ordered the men to start shooting again.

This may have been the only time in history when a war was nearly called off by popular consent, by troops who were already sick of the carnage.

I'm not a writer, but there should be an alt-history story where the truce stuck, and the governments of both sides realized that further fighting would be senseless. Of course, that would require that everybody accept the fait accompli that the Germans had conquered parts of France and most of Belgium.

49 What a beautiful child !

I am baking oatmeal for breakfast. All our Christmas festivities were last weekend, so last night was fairly ordinary.

I have a second fruitcake to make, assuming the rock-hard brown sugar has decided to soften. It's been in an air-tight jar with a moist paper towel, so we'll see...

Father, stepmother and half-sister called from Denmark yesterday, so that was a nice touch.

Sweet-Honey has big trouble with his breathing so we don't do much. It's a shame-- New York at Christmas is a real show.

Later this morning I am going to see 'Into the Woods' at the Ziegfeld and have brunch with a friend who's estranged from his family. That will give me a chance to see a bit of the glitz-- which is enough.

Merry Christmas to the Horde and thanks for all the laughs!

59 If any of you want a breakfast suggestion, I saw this a few days ago: instead of pouring pancake batter in the usual circle, pour a rectangle, slightly longer and fatter than a strip of cooked bacon; lay a cooked strip in top as batter cooks, add more batter on top and flip to cook. Voila! pancake encrusted bacon, just add a touch of syrup and you have breakfast finger food.

80 At age 43, this too is my first Christmas with my daughter (8 months old) and it means so, so much to me and my wife. Last night at vigil mass we were Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and the little one was so darn good in church. By next year, that will likely have changed and we'll be experiences some of the stroppiness that comes with the emerging ego, but I'll have found something else to feel blessed about. For now I'm allowing myself to really pamper her as I know the job of becoming a father, and the discipline that entails, is coming quite soon.

81 Mix your starch of choice (corn, hwaet, or rice, or whatever) in cold (icy cold works best) water. Plop the glorp into a pan with some (2 tbsp, or so) melted butter, heat, & gradually add drippings while stirring.

For best results, take the time to make a roux, but since anything other than roux blanc is going to take 45 minutes, you might not want to bother.

87 turkey gravy as prepared within my household involves browning the flour first, then adding turkey drippings while stirring briskly, once browned flour coated in fat, then you can add water and cooked and diced giblets. simmer til done.
Yummy stuff.

88 @57 Me and Christmas don't get along.

Well put Dan, and, empathies. It takes years to figure out how not to be the Grinch, or The Militant Atheist, or The Problem Depressive (standard central-casting roles in which one may get cast), and just learn to look in and take it for what it's worth. Which is, after all, something. I got there for a while; now it seems things are going the other way, despite some effort.

The cooking, the special drinks, the making of gift "items" are all pretty good. But as people age, and their lives change, a given group will put less value on any particular thing. The older relatives who compete to see how little they can eat (think "Babette" here), the endless recitations of what new health concern or diet fad ("Lookit Me!") prevent the taking of traditional or very special food, the craft items I'd never let my kids have, and of course this-that-and-the-other thing about this or that drink ingredient..."How to Kill a Holiday."

Worst? After working hard inside to put aside the sullen Otherhood that would come naturally, having some snot-nose punk who just discovered Dostoyevsky and imagist poetry tell you all about how hokey your life is now. Because Christmas. I love Robert Stack's rant in "Airplane." Says it all.

Posted by: Retread at December 25, 2014 09:03 AM (l7hog)

Yeah, I know all that. Wait to whisk flour in after water and shit is boiling? Sounds like a plan, and I have the good gravy flour.

Also have some cheating McCormick's packages if needed.

92 @Warden_AoS is Ace?

I figured it was a COB or a Hordeling, but I thought Ace had a different twitter handle.

Off Lena sock. Don't know about that. just saw the AoS

93 @87

OK, I like that plan. That soaks up the fat so you don't need to skim it off?

Oops. Didn't mean to be condescending. Yeah, I have the water and shit just at a boil, add the flour, and stir til it starts to thicken.

There are as many ways to make gravy as there are mothers who make it from pan drippings.

I swear by Pillsbury gravy flour.

Merry Christmas.

99 Merry Christmas Horde! All The Good Things!

Met with family earlier in the month so it's just Me, Myself, and Eris. The sun is out after a week of wet, bleccherous gloom. I may break my solemn vow of Christmas pantslessness and take a nature walk.

I'm reading my old Victorian "A Child's Life of Christ", but inside, I'm really planning what to eat next. At my core, a n unrepentant pagan.

101 I will use the pan dripping for sure. I like the early idea of browning the flour before adding the water. I think that is what my dad use to do.

Like I said, I do have some cheating McC mix if it turns out badly.

102 Turkey starting to smell pretty damn good. Neighbor's dog tried to come in the house, aka like the Christmas story.

103 I'm sharing your joy, krak. It's my grandson's first Christmas too. It's my goal to teach him his first word: "moron".

Merry Christmas, everyone.

104 RedDish: "Circle of life indeed!"

Just recalled my least favorite Christmas.

Milady and I had been up really late, putting presents under the tree, stuffing stockings. Then we slept hard, & late, for a Christmas morning.

Awoke to find the kids had already opened all their presents without us, so we missed the greatest delight, seeing their joy of discovering all we'd set up for them. They "didn't want to wake up" their poor old sleeping parents, they said.

Milady was amused. For me, that was the day I began to realize what a total failure I was as a parent. Quarter of a century ago, and I can still feel bad about that morning.

Merry Christmas, friends.

Yes, Warden is someone else. He used to be around here but I don't remember seeing him on the HQ lately, maybe Twitter takes all of his time now.

106 Given gift in my family is the worst. We are so blessed that we don't need a special day to get something we need and have very little wants due to low expectations the rest of the year. We don't need a new big screen TV when the TV we have is fine. We don't need a new computer as the ones we have are fine. If it is needed, one goes get it. After years of the having the first responses after it is opened "Hope you kept the recite". The joy is lost.We had piles of stuff of Christmas booty that still sit in the box unused for years. One year a couple of DVDs got put in with the Christmas wrapping paper box, unopened and was not missed at all. Gifts just for gifts sake. Another year a desktop daily calender with a daily crossword was given. Hoping they would enjoy do a daily crossword because they do crossword all the time but it sat for two years before the crosswords were tackled and still only less than half of the 365 done. One year got a high end 35mm film camera right before one could not buy film anywhere or get it developed, even though there were digital cameras around. The only good recent year was when everyone else but me went out of town as I
had to work on boxing day. All I got that year was one $50 dollars bill.
It was all that was needed that year and was used to by a boxing day
pizza.

This year I got everyone Cash. Gift card suck as they are only good at the one place and there is not always a need at that store. I was given a $100 gift card one year and was left with $7 dollars on it, as nothing in the store was less than $7 and no need for a $45 dollar dress shirt worn only at funerals. Same with the new thing of VISA gift cards. One can not go the Costco (already have a membership so no gift membership) or the local Casino for some fun with a VISA gift card.

108 Merry Christmas to Ace, krakatoa, and all morons and moronettes who make on-line life worth living and sometimes joyful. The gift of a blessed babe makes life worth living, too, in a very special way. Thank you for sharing yours, Krakatoa; you are very fortunate that your wife helped you to find an appreciation for Christmas -- and the two of you created a beautiful new life. The Judeo-Christian tradition is the most wonderful gift of all (with some Enlightenment thrown in), even for those who do not believe (in the same ways as most). You have added to those who will help to make it continue and prosper. Thank you and a happy New Year, too.
