Michael Grimm, a Republican who has represented New Yorkers in Congress since 2011, plans to enter a guilty plea Tuesday in federal court, admitting that he helped prepare a fraudulent tax return for a restaurant he partially owned.

His fate will be up to Federal Judge Pamela Chen, however, when she hears the terms of a plea agreement. Grimm was originally charged with 20 separate federal crimes and has been serving his constituents while under the terms of a $400,000 bond granted in the spring.

By pleading guilty to a single tax charge, he will avoid a trial that was scheduled to convene in January. Jurors would heave heard details of Grimm's alleged scheme to hide more than $1 million of his restaurant's sales and wages in order to dodge taxes between 2008 and 2010. He was also accused of hiring illegal immigrants to work for him.

This would be the douche that some on the Right were up twinking because he thug-life'd a reporter. Corrupt lout. No word from the GOP on whether they intend to do anything about him after he pleads out.

66 Strong article. Summary: the Left will not allow you to sit out the culture wars.

True. I do have problems with the article, but that is the main take away and it's a good one.

I just wish that Freedom Loving atheists would stop for a minute and realize that there *is* no morality outside "traditional religious morality" (by which they normally mean: Judeo-Christian, but I'll be nice and throw in Buddhism and a few others as well).

Unless there is a God (or gods) who approve of one set of behaviors and disapprove of another, there is no reason to be "moral" except for some fuzzy commitment to "getting along with people" or "doing what's best for everyone." But since those are, themselves, moral behaviors and not moral philosophy, that's really not more than saying "People should be moral."

That's great, and all, but since there's no specific philosophy attached to it, what, then is "moral?"

Moral behavior is moral precisely because it is grounded in a philosophy which includes a belief in something not just greater than "ourselves" but greater than mankind taken together, and even greater than all of nature. Only with such a "something" that hates one set of behaviors and loves another does the word "moral" make any sense.

...
...
...
And now I'll stop preaching.

95 Is there some national embargo on mentioning that the NYC cop killer, while crazy, was a MUSLIM???

1) What evidence is there that he was "crazy?"
B) Since I'm pretty sure he wasn't yelling "Allah snackbar!" while killing the cops, I think (in this particular case) his Mohommedism is secondary (though worth mention, at least)
III) Did I mention that his mom disputes the "crazy" allegation? She says (sorry, no link, heard it on the news this morning) that he was never diagnosed with any mental illness.
iv) Which then suggests "evil" and not "crazy" is the explanation.

131 Humans invented morals and the idea that they must be founded on something beyond us.

Which then immediately undermines the very idea of morals. Because moral behavior is not defined as "behavior of which the ruling class approves," or calling the Nazis "evil" would be nonsensical. It can't even be "behavior which benefits the majority" because we believe that "the majority" can go hang- I have my Rights.

So how, then, would "moral behavior" be defined? And why would the cave man in the next valley over give a rip about your idea of "morals" when he can kill you, rape your women, and take your stuff?

Either morals ARE and are unchanging, or they are simply suggestions which it does not matter, in the long run, if I obey.

The "crazy" meme comes from the apparent attempted suicide right before he shot his ex.

Of course I've known a few people who have "attempted" suicide as a method of getting attention with no intent of actually offing themselves. So it is not, by default, crazy.

As for the actual suicide in this case, still not necessarily crazy. He knew he was screwed. He sought to end it "on his own terms."

So merely saying "suicidal=crazy" is not true for how we typically define "crazy"

"It is not a contradiction to be a Muslim and a murderer, even a mass

They don't convert at all; they similarly remain the angry
judgmental vicious beings they always have been. They simply add 'religious' diatribes to their personal invective. Islam does not
inspire a crisis of conscience, just inspirations to outrage."

171 Morals are what we say they are.

But who is "we?" And why should I care what "you" say about morals?

Morals are not behavior. Behavior can be moral, but morals are ideas- principles. If we "invented them" then they don't actually exist- at least, not to the point you could call them "moral."

Sure, the government could force its collective view of moral behavior on people, but it would have no justification for doing so.

And before you say that you're okay with that, think about what it actually means. Freedom of speech? Made up, because it relies on a MORAL judgement. Therefore government can take it away whenever the majority decides. Freedom of association? Also relies on a moral judgement, so again can be taken away by the government whenever the majority decides.

If morals are made up, then they are invalid- since they would then be self defeating ("everyone" agrees that lying is immoral).

For a case study- look at Islam. Islam is an evil death cult that really does believe in situational (or "made up") morality. That's how the whole world would look if you were correct.

In fact, there's less hard evidence for any mental illness than there is for 'radicalization', at least to the extent that Brinsley appears to have posted on his Facebook page the Koranic soundbite about 'striking fear into the enemies of Allah'. Nevertheless, the preferred explanation is that Brinsley was mentally ill, just like the guy who beheaded a coworker in Oklahoma was mentally ill, and the Sydney bloke who took those hostages at the coffee shop was mentally ill, and the son of the Canadian Refugee Board honcho who killed a soldier at the Canadian War Memorial was mentally ill. They were also all Muslim. Oh, and the fellow in France who ran down 11 people with his car while shouting 'Allahu Akbar!' only yesterday has already been pronounced mentally ill. By sheer coincidence, he was Muslim, too.

I think she's still having nightmares about the exam she got to check for dilation .

I think she's ready to be not pregnant anymore (or as she puts it "to meet our little girl.") However, they offered her a procedure that "Sometimes" starts labor, but since it was apparently more painful than the exam she opted to wait. (I didn't object, because, as I noted, my mom is a Christmas birthday, and I don't want to do anything that increases the odds of another family member complaining about that.)

Ask them though where our logic comes from that makes us better than mere animals and they get stuck. Horribly Horribly stuck.

Context is everything.

To most liberals living in Western "Civilization", the violent acts of a radical muslim are obviously those of someone that is mentally ill. Since religion is a meaningless concept to these liberals, the muslim connection has no bearing on the whacko diagnosis.

To muslims living in a muslim "civilization", the violent acts of a radical muslim are obviously those of someone that is a true defender of the faith and thus cannot be the result of mental illness.

To the few sane people living in the tattered mess that once was Western Civilization, and still able to connect the dots in spite of years of government and media propaganda, it is clear that the violent acts of a radical muslim are obviously those of someone that is mentally ill, with a direct causal connection to islam, a religion that fosters exactly this kind of aberrant behavior.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 23, 2014 09:53 AM (Zu3d9)

Strictly speaking: probably not.

But it becomes really hard to articulate how we became different.

Evolution can't design. It can only select from the randomness of mutation.

Now it may have selected the hyper intelligence of humans (Personally I'm not convinced, but whatever) but it can't explain why that intelligence (And the logic derived from it) is better than the raw competition of animals.

Put differently, you merely have to assert it's better. You can start with that as an assertion, but it's more or less unprovable.

Unless you can prove it, in which case, go ahead.

Aquinas followed from Aristotle.

So kinda.

If you grant evolution, then order did indeed arise out of chaos. The humanists might argue that it shows reason can form out of nonreason (again, I disagree, but playing devil's advocate here.)

It still leaves you with the inevitable problem: how do you judge reason as "better" absent mere assertion? You can't.

You can probably get close with utilitarian arguments, but those still require a value distinction that has no actual basis.

You can however get to it via an appeal to an outside source (i.e. God.)

A strange combination of people, to be sure. Anyway, somehow the queen hippie got elected mayor, and as her first order of business she disbanded the (2 member) police force. The town was very excited not to have anyone busting their pot parties and issuing speeding tickets.

The county, however, was less excited about having to deal with inevitable issues that arise in a town that doesn't have any cops.

After she was run out of office after some scandal that I no longer remember, the new mayor decided that having no cops was just silly. So we got one. Progress!

357 My 2¢ less tax:

Just as physics is inherent to the physical universe, so is morality inherent in personality self-awareness.

Recognizing self and other will lead to moral righteousness. On any planet, anywhere in Creation.

As 'other' includes Deity conception, the Creator will be acknowledged as the one who 'built in' the facts, meanings, and values of life, but such faith-understanding is not requisite to discerning things, relationships, and righteousness.

For me, the Commandment is, Love God as your Father, but the second like unto it, love your neighbor as yourself, can be understood even in ignorance of the first part.

Because by definition a soul exists beyond matter.

And evolution is an entirely material process.

Now if you define soul as "reasoning capability" sure, you could randomly throw something together that gets that. But you're still hard pressed to argue why it's "better."

Cockroaches out compete us.
Viruses live in far more extreme environments.
Many animals are better hunters.

The humanists have two choices: declare reason to be the ultimate good (with no basis other than personal preference) or declare animals and man to be roughly equivalent (the Singer path.)

As for "design" I've spent enough time with tenured biochemists who act like nature is an intelligent designer, I'm fully aware of that obvious contradiction.

438 I posted this several days ago, on a thread that was at its end. but I thought I;d repost again because I thought some folks would find it uplifting. I did anyway. This is about Augustus Tolton-the son of slaves -who was the first documented AA priest. He served in IL (Chicago and Quincy) in the 1800s and unlike some people we know from Chicago he was a loving, humble servant of God and a person who brought real hope to the people he served. Some Roman Catholics are trying to move forward with his canonization but I think there needs to be some documented miracles. Perhaps Tolton might be a good possible Saint to ask to intercession of God for the change of heart of Al Sharpton, Eric Holder and Barack Obama and that racial tensions be lessened in the US.

443 for the rest of us with experience in the word, the Chicoms saw some internal splitting in the 80s, but it wasn't fatal

what the older guys wanted to avoid was another Cultural Revolution style turmoil

so Deng and modernizers like Zhao Ziyang started opening doors to wider trade with the west and adopted some western business practices

but in Deng's words, it no longer mattered "whether the cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice"

what mattered was the success of the Communist Party

and it worked: when the old communist Hu died in 89, even the students in Tiananmen marched to show their support for him and his policies

try hard to grok that, troll

the only party in China is the CPC -- modifications are not transitions to something not-communist -- it's just communist "reform" necessary for communist survival

the only party in China is the CPC -- modifications are not transitions to something not-communist -- it's just communist "reform" necessary for communist survival

Precisely. The difference between 'fascist' and 'communist' is just who holds the keys to the storefronts.

Castro and the commies will just get propped up with the inflow of cash and continue on for a few more decades instead of collapsing in a couple of years, and the Cubans get to be killed and imprisoned for the privilege.

Posted by: ThunderB at December 23, 2014 10:56 AM (zOTsN)

494 I really like that Reluctant Culture War article. Thanks for posting that, BenK.

I prefer a very secular government, myself. (You don't have to be an atheist to feel that way.) And although I was never "for" gay marriage, it was primarily b/c I felt the alternatives (civil unions and the like) addressed the supposed "need" for SSM -- and if they didn't, contract law could be amended to do so. As a conservative, I gravitate toward tradition and I dislike re-defining words/concepts that have served us fine for hundreds of years. Prior to the Prop 8 nonsense in California (which happened when I was living there), I would consider myself pretty much neutral on gay marriage --- but leaning against it for the reasons stated.

I thought that the "socons" who were warning against the attack on religion were over-reacting. And I assumed that part of it was that we just fundamentally disagreed about inserting religion/Christianity into daily government.

Then Prop 8 happened and a wave of nonsensical court decisions across the country.

And now I find within my own party that it is becoming A Matter Not To Be Discussed to want to keep traditional marriage. Suddenly *I'm* supposed to be shamed into silence for opposing SSM.

The long and short of it is that I was wrong and the socons were right. The SSM movement *is* about attacking religious freedom. Even more basic than that, it is about trying to insert government-imposed cultural views into the family unit. I have little doubt that today's parents experience constant push-back from schools and governments when they try to teach their kids basic things about human sexuality, marriage, and the like.

This infuriates me, as I am sure it will lead to a backlash.

The other day when we were talking about leading with economic issues, I was reminded about the "truce! truce!" brigade on the Right. "Management-styled" Republicans - and also Libertarians - who want to silence any talk of social issues.

I reject that.

I do NOT want to lead with social issues, but I do not want to toss out "socons" either.

Ideally, we can find a solid conservative candidate who has traditional values and let him or her run on pocketbook and security issues, but trust that he's going to try to put some of the genies back in the bottle.

You have no idea what I've been forced to read the last few months.

There are people who believe that shit.

There are also people who think that humans (a linguistic group) can understand what a non-linguistic concept of death would look like. (How is that even possible?)

As such they feel confident saying things like (rough paraphrase here) "Wolves have no concept of death, we know this because 'death' is linguistic, and wolves aren't therefore they can't understand what 'death' is." Then going on and saying "wolves have a telos about roaming and shit."

That makes no sense. If survival instinct in a thing (and I think it is) then animals surely have some idea of "not surviving" even if it's a non-linguistic notion that we can't even begin to comprehend.

you asked Why are you rejecting the possibility that evolution has a hand in our uniqueness?

I specifically noted in several places that I don't reject that particular point. I merely find it irrelevant.
God makes the rules, he's free to have given us souls via evolution or free to have raised us above animals after the fact as it were. Neither is outside the realm of possibility.

Except to note two things: 1) as I said, souls extend beyond the material, evolution does not. Not entirely sure how to jive those two (doesn't make it impossible just hard to grasp.

2) there's a tension between the idea of "Free will" and the evolutionary reliance on chemical interactions (which is somewhat determinalisitic.) That is to say: if we're only the products of evolution, then we're really just giant chemical processing machines, which seems to me at first glance to undercut any notion of free will. I can't entirely discount it though because I haven't really spent a ton of time thinking about it.

Grammie

I hope you don't mind me resorting to the short-hand "socon" btw. I never know if that's considered offensive because it is so often used by assholes who are intending it as a slur.

I consider myself a "traditionalist" and sometimes find myself uncomfortable with some of the issues that others want to make part of the national dialogue [as an example: prayer in schools (a really small issue in many ways, but emblematic for me)].

Anyway, I am praying that this election cycle conservatives of many stripes can rally around a couple of strong candidates without damaging them in the primary, because I am not sure I could vote for the ones the GOPe seem to like.

Perhaps.

But claiming some greater understanding of a wolves telos, while simultaneously claiming it can't understand death seems to be a bit of a contradiction, no?

(The arugment I'm bitching about is couched in the idea of a wolf caught in a trap and chewing off it's leg to escape. The idea that there is a concept of "Failure to survive" was baked into the whole argument. I find the entire argument to bullshit.)

I made no distinction between evolution and the hand of God. I see nothing that would suggest that the existence of evolution (a fact...not a theory) supposes the non-existence of God.

How do you know that God didn't set the universe in motion, then simply sit back and watch until some unique evolution-driven combination of chemical interactions was the perfect backdrop for a soul.

556 CBD,

Good point. Maybe not so much PIV rape, but more like using slobber-soaked dildos made from Duplo blocks, or whatever childrens' toys the ward nurses accidentally leave in his cell after the nightly injections.

I don't.
In fact I grant that likelihood.

There are certain tensions to a purely materialistic approach to evolution that I can't quite work out. Doesn't mean they can't. After all, I don't have the mind of God.

I'd note that we've drifted off topic. The original context was "how to the secular humanists find a basis for morality"

I noted that they have a weak basis for it because ultimately they have to make a value judgment that I think cannot be supported solely by facts.

You remind me of the awful poodle like lap dog I used to be unfortunate enough to live next door to. Whenever the idiotic owners let it out, it was "yap, yap, yap" all night.

Your posts are nothing more than pathetic yaps for attention. As I've posted before, nobody gives a flying flip what you think. By all means, please continue. While your repetitive yaps are boorish, I think it is a good thing to expose the typical liberal lunacy that you represent.

You know who really lost? Liberal talking points; see last election results. Deal with it. If we are so wrong, how come you are a minority in both houses of Congress now? That's got to hurt. Here's some exclamation points for you! Merry Christmas troll!!!
