What Happened to "Reasonable People Can Disagree?" [Y-not]

Recent events have led me to a troubling realization about the state of the GOP (to which I have belonged since 1980 and to which I still belong, but perhaps not for long) -- it is currently dominated by factions who apparently no longer subscribe to the "Reasonable People Can Disagree" theory of American politics.

I discovered this when my timeline was blasted with vitriol from a certain segment of political types whose mission is life is to destroy -- or at the very least marginalize -- Senator Ted Cruz. Here's a sample:

I like this one:

"Results" matter... except when they produce in a trillion dollar spending bill, I guess.

Go to Twitchy for a round up.

(A few days ago Ace had a terrific post about this latest Cruz incident. He is much more eloquent than I am so go read it.)

Now to be honest a lot of these folks are people whose accounts I had already "muted" (a most excellent feature of Twitter that I wish we had here, but I digress) from previous episodes of "base"-bashing and condescension and other nonsense, but after the Cruz stuff I "blocked" a bunch of them. Why? NOT because they dislike Cruz, but because they were attacking him using weak (to non-existent) arguments about Cruz's maneuver (and resorting to ad hominem attacks) with the type of vigor that should be reserved for Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama.

There were a few folks whose tweets did surprise me in terms of their negativity about Cruz but whom I did not block, primarily because everyone deserves a mulligan now and then... and also because the tone of their tweets was somewhat less incendiary. (I'm looking at you Sean Agnew! *wink*)

The problem with the barrage of (frankly, seemingly coordinated) attacks on Cruz last weekend was the folks making these tweets left no room to engage them in a discussion. In fact, I really only bothered to try to interact with a handful of anti-Cruz folks whose tweets (or past behavior) left room for discussion. Here's an example of what I encountered:

It's a very long thread and a lot of other folks joined in during the process but, amazingly, we were able to stay civil. Although we did not persuade each other, and I never really did get to the heart of what Stubbornly Me's objections were (he really could not cite specific examples of Cruz attacking other Republicans), at least we treated each other like fellow conservatives. In other words, we afforded each other the umbrella of respect of the "Reasonable People Can Disagree" philosophy.

Yesterday we had another incident, even more serious in many ways than the dreadful CRomnibus, and yet again I started seeing people from the Right tweeting (or writing blog posts) in ways that suggest that They Know All The Things and Reasonable People Cannot Disagree.

Can we stop with this, please?

I'm not talking about compromising your positions. I'm just talking about trying to not exude nuclear levels of smug or incendiary rhetoric or false claims of Truth when you state your positions. I see this behavior a lot lately, whether it be the Same Sex Marriage debate or Gun Control or Ted Cruz or Police Shootings.

Most of what we are engaging in on a daily basis resides in the world of opinion, not fact. Even, frankly, Constitutional matters exist in that realm -- that's what the Supreme Court is for, right? Seems to me they reverse themselves from time to time.

So let's forget making the Republican Party about a "Big Tent!" It's not working. Frankly, the people pushing this philosophy appear more interested in excluding some conservatives under the guise of "expanding the base."

There is no point in having a Big Tent if you shoulder existing residents out of it in the process.

Let's go for "Reasonable People Can Disagree" and see where that gets us.

Yep.

I am really only talking about applying the Reasonable People Can Disagree standard *within* the Party and/or within the conservative movement.

I don't consider Occupy Wall Streeters or Shut It Down rioters to be reasonable. Or most of the Democrat Party at this point.

But it seems to me there's a lot more '"Shut up," they explained' going on now.

Look at the same sex marriage thing. WITHIN the GOP it is now pretty much no longer up for debate. It's about shaming and silencing the folks who hold a position that is the majority view (and is still, iirc, in the Party Platform).

Posted by: Y-not at December 21, 2014 02:17 PM (9BRsg)

12 A lot of this is due to the ratchet that's been turning over the last 50 years. Even Reagan couldn't reduce the size of the Federal Leviathan. Reasonable people can disagree over local and personal issues, but when every issue is mandated and enforced by a faraway national government, moderation and tolerance go out the window.

18 I was listening to the American Conservative University podcast. I don't know who does it, but they have a lot of Townhall radio shows.

Anyway, it was the audio of a documentary about Ronald Reagan. Reagan, of course, had the advantage of celebrity but he faced a gigantic uphill battle on everything. All of the "right" people thought he was nuts.

And he was right about almost everything.

Look, I can get that people are a little queasy about the crazies and that the GOP has to purer than Caesar's wife but too many of them are just positioning to be the biggest fish in the GOP pond.

Here's my biggest test: Did you lie to me?

Well, the people who pushed the "this enabled Reid to get appointments that he wouldn't otherwise be entitled to" line lied to me.

That's the thing for me: the left loves to twist Reality (and language) so much that simple facts aren't recognizable as such.

Befuddling you is the nature of their game. Getting you to doubt what you know is true is their ultimate goal.

There are many simple principles in the Constitution, but the left today basically demands that they be ignored. The Second and Fourteenth Amendments spring immediately to mind. It's amazing to me how many leftards can completely ignore the plain wording of both.

Confusion of confusion. All is confusion.

65 One way to work toward reasonable people disagreeing - stop focusing
solely on someone's alleged intentions and pay attention to their overt

Commentary's recent piece on Cruz (Toobin's ?) pushed the narrative that, while his policies may be appealing to the base, Cruz is just an opportunist pandering to the base to satisfy his Presidential ambitions. Team GOP has sought to saddle him with this since Day One. Your commenters are marching to that drumbeat and don't need facts messing up their rhythm.

It would be nice if I knew Cruz's heart. Not likely to happen, so I'm forced to rely on his actions instead. He fights - Boehner caves. Cruz "panders" to the base - Boehner lies and tells the base to shut up.

Those saying Cruz is "doing it wrong" need to show me their doing it right. All I see from their side is a lot of ad hom and efforts to mislead me rather than lead the country.

as much wealth for themselves out of the population. And then they'll
be set financially when the nation finally falls."

>>Yeah, I gotta say that the appeal of not contributing a single penny to any but my most favored candidates (iow, not to the turd nominee we usually get) is starting to appeal to me. These friggin' consultants and political fundraisers are getting rich off of us. And, frankly, I think they keep soliciting for money well after they know the election is lost simply because they (the fundraisers) work on commission. My whole view changed when I learned that political fundraisers work on commission -- that's not done in charitable fundraising. It's considered unethical (because it is).

"What WE need to do is to quit trying tie our future to the tyrants in Washington."

>>Politics are local to a large extent, that's true.

Posted by: Y-not at December 21, 2014 02:56 PM (9BRsg)

87 The self-evident route to victory is to come up with candidates who violate standard categories.

No one will ever be excited by any candidate who merely checks off all the same ol' same ol' boxes of what a run-of-the-mill "conservative" or "liberal" is supposed to believe.

But if someone straddles classification zones, who cherry-picks popular/intriguing/ahead-of-the-curve policies from all over the 2D political spectrum, it will be impossible to pigeonhole such a person and thereby impossible for any opposition to take him out with the traditional ammunition used on opponents.

I think of Pym Fortuyn, Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt -- people who defied boundaries set on them by preexisting political ideologies. (And yes, Reagan belongs in there as the first real politician to advocate actively "shrinking government," a concept that seemed a bit bizarre and unnecessary at the time he first enunciated it...but he was right.)

And so I say someone, for example, who is a fiscal hyper-conservative, a strict Constitutionalist -- but who is also laissez-faire on social issues, and yet doesn't have any kookiness associated with some on the extreme libertarian wing -- such a person could kick ass and win, because the libs could not use the "social issue wedge" the always use to attack any fiscal conservative.

Ever notice the weird, stilted rhetorical style some people drop into when they try to be Concerned?

"Listened to Rush
lately? And his ilk and minions? If one is not properly baptized a "true
conservative," or worse yet may lean to being a "moderate? then one
might as well be a Trotskyite."

Who talks like this? Does anyone actually say, out loud in conversation, "One might as well be a Trotskyite"? It sounds like the writer's trying to channel what he thinks conversation sounds like in The New Yorker's coffee lounge (or whatever they have). Note also the religious symbolism of 'baptized'.

"It is those purists who stay home if
their TP candidate didn't win; it is those whose views and dogmas seem
to wish to make the Republican part a fringe party"

Other things they do. Substitute 'wish' for 'want'. 'Desire' is another one that gets overused. Contractions get eliminated; you get lots of 'it is' when 'it's' is perfectly acceptable. Passive voice sentence construction, use of outdated terms (Obama's notorious overuse of "Folks" is an obvious one).

Like Orwell says in "Politics and the English Language", you kinda get the feeling that the speaker isn't conveying his opinion; he's assembling a rhetorical Erector set with prefabricated noises, viewpoints, and phrases.

97 My state senator voted to allow gay marrage in Wash St. Position I opposed and e-mailed and told him why and got a response that made me think. Said he voted on the basis of district preference( probably true). He also said that he was the leader of a coalition of D and R that kept spending under control (true) and was working to prevent institution of other taxes and fees ie carbon tax (true so far). Since I can't always get what I want (I am a realist) he made me remember I needed to prioritize my wants and judge on the basis of what was more important. Taxes won. I voted for him. Most of our problems involve an inability of our "leaders" to listen and distill a Top Five Things list and deliver. Those Top Five Things would satisfy most people (con and LIV) and delivery would make you a friend, not an enemy. If such a list cannot be compiled and agreed to then we are truly doomed as a party and a nation.
Remember, the lib/commie plan is to fracture society into small groups so they can gather in enough fragments through payoffs to rule. If you can gather a sizable majority by satisfying a few common wants it is so much easier to gain control and also get the divisive issues forced down to the states where they belong.
Remember, keep all criticism sub-kiloton level so the neighbors can enjoy a quiet Sunday afternoon.

119 Tradition means giving a vote to most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.

All democrats object to men being disqualified by the accident of birth; tradition objects to their being disqualified by the accident of death. Democracy tells us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our groom; tradition asks us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our father.

Don't care. Have something to say about issues or is this just about you personally?

I'm increasingly ambivalent toward Twitter because I see so much of this type of thing. People get too caught up in their followers, their persona, etc like they're a celebrity. I've caught myself doing it. Judging arguments by how many followers someone has, expecting me to do oppo research on someone's tweets before responding to an argument. Acting as if you have some major online "presence" that has to be defended against critics.

If you're making bank as a pundit, fine. If you're a hobbyist like the rest of us, lighten up.And "she's a bad person" isn't cutting it as an argument regardless.

In the halls of Gucci Gulch, no carve out shall be touched. There is solidarity on that, AGAINST the working class. Tea party is still the 65% that want smaller government, less fed control, fewer entitlement giveaways. Most don't even understand all the bailouts for the upper crust and connected class.

Seriously, agreed. Team GOP would rather sink the ship than let Cruz onto the bridge. All the talk about "circular firing squads" always boils down to "shut up and vote Romney or you're a Democrat."

The GOP leadership will unite with the Dems to stave off a threat from the the Right every time. We're the ones who want to change politics as usual and they obviously don't. The Tea Party movement will be strangled in its crib if it stays in the GOP. They want it dead and gone and forgotten.

I didn't want to support a third party but the people who run my party of choice no longer want me, so I have to. They made that decision, not me.

In addition to that were various bumper stickers. So I wentf into the store and came out with post it notes (in addition to the other things I needed to get). When I came out the van was still there So I added things on post it notes:

Who told you to believe that?

I put it under it.,"Nobody. From a non religious household I came to faith in God."

(Since the other side of the van had a sticker about global warming I could say side something about "Who told you to believe that?" but I didn't)

Under the Darwin fish I put "Belief in God is not
contradictory to believe in evolution."

"Will we have destroyed out planet when Jesus returns?" I put ,"People who are likely to destroy our planet are non religious dictators like the Head of North Korea or Radical Muslims not Evangelical Christians."

And underneath it all I put "Happy Holidays to you!"

FenelonSpouse used to be embarrassed by my sometimes doing this sort of them. Now they're so inured to it they say "Stickies at the ready" almost like they say "Wand at the ready" in Harry Potter movies. :^)

257 Republicans need to a) realize who the enemy really is, and b) stop being so naive about the enemy. I find the so-called "moderate" Republicans to be very naive about the tactics, ideology, and true intentions of the radical left. The radical left wants to destroy this country. They want to take everything that you have and give it to the state. The radical left will kill those that disagree with them if given the power to do so. The radical left wants to set up a totalitarian state. How do we know? Because history has shown us time and time again that this is what the ideology of the socialist-communist leads to: gulags, show trials, executions, nationalization of businesses, authoritarian rule, and the confiscation of property. There is a significant percentage of the Republican party that doesn't quite believe this. They are naive, beat up by the media, and they think that if they compromise, kowtow, and let the left have their way that everything will be fine. Well, it's not fine, and look what the president is doing? None of this is fine, and sorry, but it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with trying to inflict a socialist-communist agenda upon the American people. The left doesn't divide it's forces. Instead, they keep it together for elections, and they support people. We need to take that lesson if we are to marginalize the spread of the radical leftist lies before it's too late. It may already be too late, but we have to try.

265 LOL. I'm not a "rocket surgeon" like some here, but does today's "Open Blogger" really think the purpose of Cruz's point of order stunt (which he blindsided his colleagues with) was to reduce spending because a $ trillion was too much? 277 "Reasonable people getting along? Listened to Rush lately? And his ilk and minions?"

To whom are you a minion?

"If one is not properly baptized a "true conservative," or worse yet may lean to being a "moderate? then one might as well be a Trotskyite."

Can't recall any of you being murdered by a mole. All we're talking about is denying you the authority to represent US in a democratic republic.

"It is those purists"

It's telling you regard "purity" as a smear. You consider yourself impure? I like AmishDude's test. Do you lie?

"who stay home if their TP candidate didn't win;"

We have this neurosis about electing people who do the wrong thing. We're against it.

"it is those whose views and dogmas seem to wish to make the Republican part a fringe party"

You guys already are, considering you can command about half of a third of eligible voters.

Ever read Xenophon's Anabaxis? Bunch of Greeks, sitting on their butts in the dirt, arguing about what they ought to do, and voting on the people who will lead them to do it. And the point of that system is, if you expect a man to do anything for you, like walk out of Iran to Armenia, or pay tax, or turn down bribes from Persians, then that man is capable of understanding why he should take on task as a free choice. And leadership, social power, political power in the larger sense, should belong to people who can persuade others that what they are doing is right.

Republicans don't believe in that anymore. They scream when called on to do it.

They want to have the power, but they want it to be a default option from a rigged system. They openly deny there is any way to "sell" their program, so they lie. They play games with deadlines and semantics. They live for secret deals approved blindly.

And anybody who actually tries to persuade people that the agenda is actually good, is a rebel, a traitor, and a fool to be isolated and destroyed.

Right-wingers denounce policy, and Republicans denounce people. ( I won't use "conservative" anymore, it is too vague.)

Sad to say that I've been conditioned to this attitude by others pretending to be conservative and seeming to fight for the actions needed but turn out to only be concerned about their career and flip like a nickel when it suits them.

I agree with the gist of your comment. I, too, am really gun-shy at this point. Rubio's betrayal stung and shook my confidence, frankly.

I would say that Cruz did just get a bill passed last week over the Fort Hood shootings that makes the victims eligible for Purple Hearts, iirc, and I think opens up some additional benefits to them/their families.

I guess we'll know soon enough if McConnell and Boehner are going to oppose the Democrats or not. I'm not super-hopeful.

Recent events have led me to a troubling realization about the state of the GOP (to which I have belonged since 1980 and to which I still belong, but perhaps not for long)

I predict 5 years or less. I was a registered Republican when I lived in Texas 25+ years ago. When I moved to Florida, I registered NPA - no party affliation. Never looked back.

Only downside is that I can't participate in the primary votes, but oh well.
