It's that eternal balancing act, no? As I said if there's no growth potential (which given that it's in academic administration is a non-unlikely possibility) then the short term costs probably outweigh the long term benefits (which is to say there are none.) Plus I'd have to give up my part time TA-work which provides valuable classroom experience (and I'm getting more control over content in the spring in fall as the instructor and I redesign the course.) with the PhD almost in reach, which could radically alter career path (OK I still don't have a prospectus, but so close I can taste it) and a kid all but here, it's a weird time to be looking for work. I'm not crushed if I don't get the job either. I'm working some other angles which have better long term prospects (but bird in hand and all that jazz.) I know more than one family that looked at what was being netted by having both parents work and realizing that, with gas and child care and whatnot, it wasn't worth it. I mention this only because at least you are looking at it from the get go, not a couple of years down the line. Of course, as you said, there's future career potential to consider as well. Interview like you want the job ... even if you're unsure. You want an offer - even if just to kindly reject it. They may up the ante. You may need these people as a fallback later. Saw Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations episode on Cuba last night and it was just mindboggling how much he soft-pedaled life under Castro. Bourdain fist said he had "mixed feelings" about Castro (hubby commented - what, he can't decide which way he'd want him executed?), and then he went on to say that Cuba got three things right: sports, education and healthcare. WTF? DId I miss the reports of miracle cures being developed in Havana, or the string of Nobel Prizes awarded to Cuban scholars?

So will Raul release a few thousand 'political' prisoners as a humanitarian gesture and let them emigrate to the US?
Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 19, 2014 09:06 AM (uNkTU) Yeah, there'll be some of that, but- Oblabla's speech yesterday where he raised the straw man of US "colonialism" gave the game away. He's going to give Gitmo back to the Cubans. That eliminates Gitmo as a whole and the prisoners go free or onto US soil and endless litigation. That'll be the cherry on top of Oblabla's spotless record of kowtowing and assisting tyrants. Once relations are normalized, back Gitmo goes. You read it here first. Yeah, so I guess we're at the point in the Jackie story where it's safe to assume that NOTHING happened that night. No date, no rape. She probably went to a movie by herself.
Posted by: Lincolntf The spoofed phone numbers and text messages seem to be from out of a bizare action/spy movie. I know that parents have bemoaned every advance in technology for how it can be used or misued by youngins'. But the proliferation of digital cameras, Internet posting and texting is amazing. People joke about how good it was to go through college and their 20s before these advances. I think that it's spot on. Its only been about two decades since the PRC got the W-88 warhead from Harry Wu. They might have traded to Putin some Moo Goo Gaipan for the MIRV design. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 19, 2014 08:49 AM (uNkTU)" China got MIRV technology from Bill Clinton in exchange for reelection money in 1996. It was not billed as MIRV technology at the time. It was claimed to be technology for launching multiple satellites from the same booster but it is the same thing. Find a copy of the Cox Committee report which documented the exchange. It was released right after Bill Clinton had been impeached and the Senate refused to convict him even though Democrat Senators admitted that, yes, Clinton had done the things he was accused of and yes, they were impeachable offenses but no, he is in my Party so you and the Constitution can go FOAD. It kind of surprises me if it has taken the Chinese this long to test a working MIRV system but that may actually be more a matter of this being a politically auspicious time to make the announcement rather than when they finally had MIRV capability. Every time they launched multiple satellites from the same launch, they were testing their MIRV capability. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at December 19, 2014 09:31 AM (PD6iL) 130

I don't even think McD's et. al. are going to start popping up in Cuba (that would be bad for Castro, so it's very unlikely), but if it did- these are people so far deep in poverty they can't even raise cattle. They live in what should be a freaking paradise, but because of Communism have nothing. And what these idiots are worried about is that McD's and Starbucks might move in and *gasp!* employ people! And that will mean progress! And progress means DESPOILING THE ENVIRONMENT!!!!11!!1111!!!!1ELEVENTY! F*cking leftists. 90 Yeah, so I guess we're at the point in the Jackie story where it's safe to assume that NOTHING happened that night. No date, no rape. She probably went to a movie by herself.
_______________________________ I've been saying this from the start. How did Jackie managed to get gang-raped by the fraternity friends of her IMAGINARY date? And wasn't it convenient for Jackie that the assault gave her an excuse to call her crush Ryan and ask for his help -- right after several weeks of Jackie's failed attempts to get Ryan's attention by sending him mash e-mails, through her fictitious boyfriend? Nothing happened to Jackie that night, or any other night. She got dressed up and went out for her "date" with the non-existent guy. She either went to a movie, or she went and sat at the picnic table (from which she called her rescuer Ryan) and thought up a story she could tell Ryan as a pretext for having him "rescue" her. "Hey, what about gang rape? I could tell Ryan that five random guys made me fellate them. That'll surely make dreamy Ryan want to kiss me!" It is where "relatively" comes into play... we had a discussion on the show WRT "economic equality" in my econ honors class in high school... I pointed out the family wanted for nothing and was able to live in an exclusive zip code... there was no "inequality" the system was working and the family was climbing.... It is amazing how much more cogent entertainment was on class issues back then. Posted by: Sven S Blade a.k.a. El Assassin@sven10077 at December 19, 2014 10:14 AM (/4AZU) 255

Jesus it would have to be almost criminal negligence. They'd have to leave the root/admin account exposed and leak the password. It's not that easy to get a bot or something into a specific target. You can't just upload a bot to a web page and have it infect the entire system like Independence day. Viruses aren't usually targeted. They just spread around randomly. To make them targeted you need to do some social engineering. i.e. make a bunch of infected key fobs up and hand them out in the Sony Parking lot. They didn't just guess 1 user password either. There are multiple email accounts involved along with file system access to get the movies themselves. Someone got admin level privileges inside the firewall. It could be done but god you'd have to have the dumbest IT firm ever. Posted by: bestie21 at December 19, 2014 10:34 AM (6vztv) 352

I haven't run into something like that in a decade. I mean that could actually spread and get admin level access. Not to mention their users are likely twiddling on macs and the servers are running probably Linux. Since Windows is teh evil these days. It's been interesting to see the Cuba thing unfold. Being second-generation Cuban-American, there's actually been some schadenfraude involved. Mind you, the deal is terrible, but that I've come to expect from are SCOAMF.
But I've seen quite a few second-generations go to the other side of the political aisle. And based on my Facebook feed, most are livid about this. Fueling that fire is the comments they see defending the actions of Obama: the type of comments that liberals typically use (saw someone reply that essentially claimed racism). There's never enough popcorn to see the left eat itself. Posted by: Cuban Embargo Crisis at December 19, 2014 10:43 AM (pS7Ne) 362
Would think Dennehy would be better suited to play UVa.

Everyone is just assuming this is all about the stupid movie. Really the movie is only one of several embarrassing things swiped. The "racist" emails are a no brainer since they were a back and forth between big shot execs. I'd check those accounts first myself. The Alex Trebek vs the hovercopter mom thing is in there too. I mean in context of American pop culture that interesting but why would the DPRK sift through millions of emails looking for that? It's almost as someone knew some internal scuttlebutt and went to look at Trebek's account.

"Jesus it would have to be almost criminal
negligence. Posted by: bestie21 at December 19, 2014 10:34 AM (6vztv)" There are other ways in. The leading rumors seem to be malware loaded inadvertently by some user. New vulnerabilities are being discovered all the time. For example the shellshock exploit of Bash on Unix and Linux system found a weakness in a piece of software that has been assumed for years to be solid and secure. The thing is that despite the vulnerability having been exposed months ago, I bet that a majority of the systems running Linux or Unix have not upgraded to fix that particular vulnerability. There is a cost to be paid to keep your systems secure. It costs in hiring knowledgeable people and letting them do their job as well as paying for the hardware and software that facilitate their efforts to keep the system secure. The alternative can be seeing $45 million of production costs and $15 of advertising for "The Interview" flushed down the toilet and even worse from the standpoint of the high level executives is having their racist joke emails and disparaging comments broadcast to the world. Still, a lot of organizations don't want to spend the money for security or do the things they have to do to stay secure. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at December 19, 2014 11:07 AM (PD6iL) 375

346 I happened to catch a bit of O'Really last night.
He had two retired colonels on (whose names escape me right now), and one of them said the Bowe Bergdahl report will be released Jan. 16 (a Friday, natch). Said the person he spoke with said Bergdahl absolutely deserted, but will be allowed to keep his $300,000 back pay and will be given an honorable discharge. Oh, look. My rage meter just flew across the room. ________________________________ Nothing would surprise me from this criminal administration, but it they do this, I hope their is SERIOUS public blowback. To reward that traitorous SOB with not only hundreds of thousands of dollars of our money, but also an honorable discharge when he did one of the most dishonorable things imaginable, would be an outrage. On the topic of Chinese ICBM's, we're in a hard old way. The land-base deterrent has been trimmed down drastically (no MIRV's and a number of missile wings decommissioned) and who knows what kind of condition the sea-based leg is in. And if we're too far down the scale in terms of this kind of stuff, it's not like we can snap our fingers and bring everything up to snuff.
