What Exactly Has North Korea Done That Progressives Don't Do Every Single Day?

A professor blogged a criticism of a teaching assistant, who'd discussed gay marriage in her classroom, but then shut down all dissent, claiming dissent to be illegitimate (per his claim).

Result? The university is "investigating" him and has suspended him from all teaching duties.

arquette University has suspended with pay and barred from campus the tenured professor who criticized a graduate student instructor in a personal blog, pending an investigation into his conduct.

John McAdams, an associate professor of political science at Marquette, last month wrote a controversial blog post accusing a teaching assistant in philosophy of shutting down a classroom conversation on gay marriage based on her own political beliefs. He based the post on a recording secretly made by a disgruntled student who wished that the instructor, Cheryl Abbate, had spent more time on the topic of gay marriage, which the student opposed. McAdams said Abbate, in not allowing a prolonged conversation about gay marriage, was "using a tactic typical among liberals," in which opinions they disagree with "are not merely wrong, and are not to be argued against on their merits, but are deemed 'offensive' and need to be shut up."

...

McAdams shared the text of an email he received from Richard Holz, dean of the Helen Way Klinger College of Arts and Sciences.

"The university is continuing to review your conduct and during this period -- and until further notice -- you are relieved of all teaching duties and all other faculty activities, including, but not limited to, advising, committee work, faculty meetings and any activity that would involve your interaction with Marquette students, faculty and staff," Holz wrote.

Apparently the academy is no longer the place for academic debate.

6 Apparently the academy is no longer the place for academic debate

Universities, particularly the expensive hoity-toity ones, have degenerated into indoctrination centers pushing propaganda.

There are only three reasons to go college:

1. You can't get a job without a degree now-a-days

2. STEM subjects necessitate it

3. You make connections (it's not what you know but who you know).

Unless you can get into a really well connected school, it is best to avoid the ones that aren't well known for their STEM programs. Instead, go to community college half time, and then finish up your last two years at a local state college, so that you can get the degree.

Exactly. It's a taxpayer subsidy to the higher educational system. It also enables colleges to keep increasing their tuition.

If the student loan program went away, colleges would have to lower their tuition to what students and their parents could actually afford through savings and work.

That would also force colleges to cut out the dead wood, such as "studies" programs. A lot of Marxist professors would find themselves unemployed.

Actually, I doubt it. The government is notoriously tight with bucks for things like that (see, e.g., the VA, Indian reservations). Universities are much better off being able to shake down alumni.

With guaranteed subvention comes guaranteed ceilings, and a buttload of government control. And if there's one thing universities don't like, it's interference by anyone outside the university.

It may simple be against Marquette policy for faculty to publicly post something like that. Basically, it's a "you suck" to one of the teaching assistants in another department, in public. A (not so) modest proposal: charge for units in inverse proportion to the amount of money brought into the university through overheads on grants and bequests.

Little known fact: most universities fund a lot of their ongoing operations through the overheads on Federal grants brought in (mostly) by science and engineering faculty. So if someone wants to study in those departments, which pull a lot more than their weight, that student's tuition should be lower than those wishing to study some risible bullshit that never brings a dime into the place (yeah, I'm looking at you, Gender Studies). Make those students pay the full freight, the fully burdened cost of the physical plant, salaries, and benefits for faculty and administrators involved in that department.

The whole concept of 'student loan' originated in the private sector.
But it was parents who took out a loan, to give their kids a college education.

Then, the government wanted to take the parents out of the equation.
So they came up with the 'Government Student Loan'...which gives loans to young people who have No Assets, No Jobs and No Credit Rating.

One of the fun things about this Kafkaesque moment is he wasn't actually accused of anything at all. He received a suspension notice without naming the crime or accuser, though the letter writer helpfully included a copy of Marquettes anti-harassment policy.

Volokh got a bit more out of them after the fact, but still nothing definitive.

In their race to support a liberal grad student against a TENURED professor, they sacrifice both academic freedom and tenure at the altar of political correctness. Hell, next they'll be doing away with faculty senates - and that would be a Godsend for sure!

It's probably the only way he could get his opinion (or side of the story) out there for public consumption. If he had quietly gone to the administration, he'd still be suspended and under investigation, only then he'd also be having to deal with rumors that he was molesting coeds. By putting his thoughts out in the public forum, he's ahead of the shady accusations and rumors game.

225 When I was there back in the day, the school was actually considered fairly conservative, at least when compared with the reeducation camp in Madison. The Jesuits were liberal, but I don't remember them mixing politics with academics much. The only hard-core lefty I remember was a Western Civ TA who sang the praises of Communism. When I pointed out that Communism didn't seem to work so good in the real world, he gave me a condescending little smile and said, "It hasn't been tried yet."

Yeah, he was a dick. But he didn't dock my grade or kick me out of the class because he didn't like what I said. And the curriculum was still heavy on the Dead White Males of Western Civ - the Shakespeare class I took was outstanding. And I have no idea what that professor's political beliefs were or how he felt about gays or the GOP or abortion or anything - because he just talked about Shakespeare.

The place has changed, that's for sure. I'm glad I was an undergrad before PC had taken over. When I went back to grad school (George Washington U) 10 years later, the rot had set in.

311 Yes, BXVI's abdication was and still is a shock, to me anyway. Bergoglio had gotten the second- highest number of votes at the 2005 Papal election too, so Benedict was not unaware of what would happen after he abdicated the office.
But JPII was less a doctrinally-traditional Catholic than many think, though he was not as leftist as many prelates. He did many things that angered (reasonably, in my opinion) believing Catholics.
Overly elastic ecumenism, sometimes to the point of religious indifferentism, was the biggest complaint.

Posted by: mugiwara at December 18, 2014 09:22 PM (06U11)

316 Actually, I think student loans should be dischargeable by bankruptcy. Otherwise it's a form of debt slavery.

This presumes that the banks who made the loans and the colleges who accepted them as payment are left holding the bag in case of default, and there is no government bailout. This would keep banks on their toes as far as who they loan money to, and the colleges as far as who they accept as students.

Of course, this further presupposes that there are no affirmative action policies declaring that everybody has a "right" to higher education, no matter their academic achievement or ability to pay.

My fantasy world is a very pretty place. I also hope Santa brings me a unicorn for Christmas.

I hope, as mentioned above, that he has good legal counsel and fights this. 348 I thought it was a terrible job to be an instructor or even tenured staff at a University when I was in college. You train for up to 15 years to get your degree, you have to do peon work for little pay to earn an opening, you wind up trying to arrange a teaching schedule that you have to defend against the department chair's buddies because they don't want to teach basic classes either, and then you deal with a bunch of mouthbreather who don't get it, won't get it, or ask embarrassing questions because you don't get it either.

Let's face it, the age of the Elder Font of Wisdom that we all were taught about in the books from Wilson's administration are long gone. The age when you could be cool and hip and knowledgeable and get tail or ready-made acolytes is gone too.
What we have now is identity politics, battling shibboleths, and pressure to pass the athletes and the children of the well connected no matter how dismal the grades.
One wrong step and the best you can hope for is English 083 or teaching "Elements of Sociology" to women studies majors who are also looking to take you down like a redwood.

Of course the bitch shut down debate. Any and all actual debate is toxic, and a chance to make a wrong statement and have your career destroyed and never work again.
One.fucking.word.wrong.
Of course the bitch was propounding. Failing to be sufficiently enthusiastic will side-track your career and you will never get time to do the basic research to continue to publish.

366 Okay, I need to stop this. Or post on the thread topic. But Catholic girls just wanna have fun.
ThunderB, you seem to know more about Church machinations than 95 percent of Catholics. You're still oversimplifying, though. This is a deeper problem than Vatican finances, or homosexual clerics and their self-protective and loose "network." And those are DEEP problems.
Benedict XVI was one of the 'progressive' theologians at Vatican II. He may have had regrets/maturation of thought over the years as CDF head and Pope. And yes, as someone else said above, he was "okay." I loved and and still love him. I think he did terrible damage by abdicating, though, and I know the Church's problem is ultimately theological- not the "gay Mafia," not corrupt people who will always exist, with us and elsewhere. But who do we believe God is, and what that means- there's the rub.

I am told that since evil handguns were removed from the hands of ordinary Australians by their beneficient and far-sighted government, the country has been transformed into an exemplar of blessed safety.

What could possibly have gone wrong?

369 Back in the Stone Age when I was in college (the 1990's), the left was big on "diversity" - including its bedrock "diversity of opinion". Now that they are the dominant voice in the country, not so much.

377 So, any betting pool on when the ONT comes up?

Posted by: The Overnight Hat at December 18, 2014 10:19 PM (lN8KC)

378 I was taught that Liberation Theology was an attempt to either reconcile the teachings of Christ with the teachings of International Socialism, or a way to use the Catholic faith as cover for destroying the underpinnings of traditional society and turning the elements that had the most to gain and the most to contribute in support of the then current power structure against the the society itself.

It depends on if you are for it or agin it.

Traditionally the societies of Latin America have been very traditional and self sustaining in that the societies settle into "areas of influence". Families, villages, and regions tend to have a sort of traditional role in the power structure and pass it down among them. When true revolution appeared, for example in the early 1800's, it was in large part because the Spanish crown started re-assinging power to groups and individuals that benefited the Spanish crown instead of the oligarchies in the colonies that had been focused on benefiting themselves.
I thought the main thrust of Liberation Theology was to set up the concept of "this stuff should belong to me instead because me and my friends deserve it, God and Marx say so." But I am an evil, cynical sinner.

Mate is -yerba mate- is a type of Paraguayan tea. It is made from the leave of shrub related to holly and has caffeine in it. It grows in Paraguay and Argentina.
You can buy it around, health food stores tend to have it. It tastes sort of like green tea.
The lady at work who grew up in Argentina watched me make it and informed me that I needed to put a lot more in and add a bunch of sugar to make it traditional. I would have caught fire and detonated using her recipe.
