The mummy people at least have an actual methodology behind their extrapolation. Mummy density is x per y. That has been consistent so far. If that holds up, it will be a million.

CALPERS is relying on the "And then a miracle happens" methodology.

52 Won't be around much today because of work, but I did want to make one comment about the furor over The Interview.

A foreign power has directly threatened US Citizens on US Soil over the publication of a work of art (for a given value of that term). I don't actually have a problem with the theaters or Sony saying "never mind."

However, I do have a huge problem with the SCOAMT's lack of a response. The moment the NORKs made those threats, TFG should have been on TV (oh, but he hates photo ops...) saying, "North Korea just threatened American Citizens over an exercise of one of our most treasured freedoms- freedom of the press. So to Kim Jong Un, I say this: if one American dies in one act of violence because of this movie, I will level Pyongyang. I will burn your cities to the ground. I will bomb them until no stone stands on another. I will then send in soldiers and marines to kill every member of your military they can find, raze your crops, and salt the earth. We will not be threatened by a tin-pot dictator of a country which only exists because we do not deign to notice it."

66 It would be nice to see the Hollywood elite stand up to this. But we know they are phonies.

Well, they *are* phonies. And they would certainly stand up against any censure from American politicians because "freedom of speech."

However, they can do that knowing they won't go to jail or get killed over such a stand on principle. OTOH, they might well get killed over such a stand on principle when the person threatening them is a psychopathic dictator like Kim Jong Un.

I can't really blame Sony for this. I can't really blame "Hollywood" for this, either. I'd *like* to see them stand up for their principles, but since they're not getting support from the US Government (against a foreign enemy, no less), I can see why they would be reluctant to do so.

I think there's been a serious downward decline. I thought they were great on 'Freaks and Geeks' but that was 15 years ago.

The OZ movie Franco was in was really bad, and Rogen's become a colossal ass that is a bit much for a guy who really should be a co-star at best. I think the last time I thought Rogen was good was 'Knocked Up,' and (checking) that's from 2007.

71 about social sciences being destroyed by SJW

I heard a talking head on CNN blather something about how "we all know having a diverse society makes us all so much safer"

which is completely false. I am not arguing for homogenous societies, but it is well known that there is far less criminality in homogenous populations. Stronger social identity and enforcement of common mores. When there is an influx of new populations, there is a corresponding increase in criminality. That has been the case since they started tracking it. Which I am sure they do not anymore.

72 I just watched the trailer for the first time. I chuckled a few times, the same sort of dumb-stoner comedy that I expect from Rogen and Co. Of course, if he'd meant to complain that he was being mistake *for* "the help", he would have said that he was treated "*as* the help". And this guy calls himself a writer!

Section 8 made the suburbs much more "diverse". And also caused crime, including violent crime, and including murder, to skyrocket in previously very safe neighborhoods. Yay diversity!

he and obama are going after low hanging fruit. And they're botching it in the process. The ME is steadily getting shittier, and these two are acting like kissing Castro's ass is somehow noble? And nothing was said about oppression of writers, gays, and just about every other basic human right.

But "new chapters" and other drivel play to the left, which long ago decided that Uncle Fidel and Che are noble. The left never changed. Watch a Monty python episode. They and others simply pretended that the problems never existed. Therefore, the actions taken by people they hated was by default, stupid.

128 O.K. I'll say ti again, and I really have no dog in this fight because I'm not Roman Catholic. The Pope is only considered as speaking ex cathedra (from the chair) when he is speaking on faith on morals under specific circumstances. As someone noted yesterday, if he supports the Cubs in baseball no RC has to. If he thinks America should resume relations with Cuba you don't have to agree. If you had some major doctrinal disagreement with the Catholic church such as stopped believing in transubstantiation or confession to a priest, think women should be ordained (none of which I care to debate) or were abused by a Priest or nun I can see going to another church-but over the political pronouncements of the Pope?-I don't see why.
Isn't the faith about receiving the "real presence" of Christ in the Eucharist and that encouragement to become more like Christ. You can't do that if the Pope wants diplomatic relations with Cuba?

192 The techniques used by the Norks to bend Hollywood to their will are available to anybody with the skills and determination to hack into the networks of Hollywood studios and download their embarrassing racist emails. It would not surprise me to learn that the truely embarrassing emails that the Norks are holding back are the ones where studio executives are engaged in conversations about some sort of illegal activity. After all, Hollywood accounting is notorious for misreporting profits and losses in order to ace out anybody who is foolish enough to sign up for a share of the "profits".

The message is that Hollywood studios will cave if you have the goods on them and they are not serious about security on their computer systems so it should not be all that challenging to crack into their systems. They are also pretty dumb about what they discuss in their emails.

210 However, the leadership of the Church has an abysmal track record when they stagger into public and foreign policy.

----

The Church's mission is not the US' mission. The Church's primary mission to bring the Word of God and the Eucharist to as many people as possible to prepare their souls for eternal life.

The United States mission is to keep us safe.

Those two are going to collide at times. I'm ok with that.

Despite what has been reported, this Pope has not changed one doctrinal aspect of the Church, nor hinted that he might - which he cannot do unilaterally.

Are there things I wish he would be better on - yes. But so far, he seems to be very good at evangelizing. I think that is a great thing.

Diversity only provides "strength" when it's a hybridization of the good in various cultures. Moral relativism and multiculturism render diversity either meaningless or actively harmful to questions of strength, much less "safety."

The Netherlands and other countries in the EU are some of the most tolerant places on Earth, but they are routinely targeted by head-hackers. The idea that being "intolerant" somehow raises your profile with these folks and thus dhimitude (errr) tolerance will make you safer is simply empirically wrong as well as morally cowardly.

Well, I'm a little more sanguine about an extrapolation of this nature opposed to an overtly political one. Now maybe the "million mummy" number is an extreme extrapolation, intended to spur more funding for the research, but I don't have a problem with funding this research. One, it's actually interesting, and two, it's not likely that I will be told to modify my behavior in some stupid way as an outcome of that research (looking at you, Gerbil Worming researchers). Also, given that it's in Egypt, those mummies are in peril of being destroyed by islamists for some dam-fool reason, so the window of opportunity to study them should be exploited to the max.

While I don't know any specifics about Sony, I do know that a lot of well known companies do seem to have a rather lax attitude towards computer security. For what it is worth, I have a CISSP certification, for all the good it does me. Anybody out there hiring? I am posting to this website in the middle of a working day if that is any clue.

I'm not sure that is reasonable....there is a legitimate need for overseas travel by the president.

What is not legitimate is the number of people he brings along, and the cost of protection of his family. They can suck it up and no take European vacations.

274 "the woman who asked Mooch to reach something in the Target is the wife
of a...wait for it...MSNBC producer. The wife and husband are also big
Obama supporters. So the whole thing may have been a set up to try to show Mooch's 'helpful/selfless' side."

It's hard to imagine it could ever have been anything other than a setup.

Really, an anonymous unscreened Target shopper is allowed to walk straight through the massive security cordon surrounding the First Lady? Yeah, right. Pull the other one.

So they set it up, and they used it in Campaign 2012 to "humanize" distant and arrogant Mooch with voters, via touching story of FLOTUS helping an ordinary person and feeling good about doing so.

Then Mooch decided this year to recycle it as the ordinary person being instead a vicious racist wanting black women to perform menial chores. And Mooch then promptly got caught when the original video resurfaced. Not bright enough to lie well.

275 "imagine Russia & China, with huge resources. They are watching."

They're already "there". Several studios regularly run scripts past ChiCom censors (er, local "consultants) to ensure compliance w/the regime.
No need to hack when a simple red pen hits the script...

279 More hacked emails released. Think this one shows you what stand-up guys they have in Hollywood:

The email is from executive Michael Lynton, who suggests that in the
future, Sony shouldn't hire black actors like Denzel for leads in films.
The argument Lynton makes is that the rest of the world is "racist"
and they don't want to see black actors in lead roles, so every time
they cast someone like Denzel in The Equalizer, their foreign box office is going to sink. Thus, they shouldn't hire black actors for lead roles, obviously. About Denzel specifically, Lynton wrote:

"He's reliable at the domestic [box office], safe, but has not had a huge success in years. I believe whenever possible the non event pictures, extra 'bets' should have a large inherent upside and be made for the right price. Here there isn't a large inherent upside...believe that the international motion picture audience is racist - in general pictures with an African American lead don't play well overseas."

281 I think it is time to have serious conversation about the amount of
money being spent to protect the president. It is a cost issue, but it
is also republican issue.

It's not quite as bad as an idea as Ace's pickoff a rino by voting D but it is up there.

Irregardless of who's in the office an attempt on a President is a BIG deal and an Act Of War if attributable. Just trying it got onto the Adios Saddam Hussein list and whatever you think of that war it's cost a shitload more than some Osprey flights.

285 Norks v. Sony shows how unprepared we are for cyberwar. Hacking is more about determination than brilliance. It's not as if there's a tiny pool of talent that can pull this stuff off. The starter set is a middling knowledge of computers and the net, a graphics cards and an axe to grind

Every company and every government needs to be much more conscious of how vulnerable they are - as well as the public that gives them personal info they can't effectively protect. Data points are like watering holes to these guys. They're going to lurk where the food is. Big Data is premised on shaky foundations. Security, decentralization and separation/privacy should be considered before we rush to amalgamate ourselves in utopian singularity. The tech-Bulls have had their run - time for the Bears to get a fair hearing.

I was wondering that myself. There's somehow a profit in shipping and reselling vehicles to the ME?

Posted by: Blue Hen at December 18, 2014 10:18 AM (Spluw)

Especially if they are stolen. Guy trades in truck to dealer. Dealer wholesales it off at auction. (this happened) Fly-by-night auction buyer puts vehicles on lot, from which they get "stolen" (speculation). Fly-by-night dealer makes insurance claim, several sea-cans of "stolen" vehicles make their way to ISIS. (further speculation) But I'll bet you that something close to that is how it went down.
