Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Obama Moves to Normalize Relations With Cuba, After Cuba Releases Hostage It's Held for Five YearsRubio says that this announces to the world that the way to wring concessions from America is to take a hostage. But that's silly. Obama already announced that with Bowe Berdahl. The monster is speaking now. Near the end of the speech, after announcing a raft of "executive actions," he concedes the embargo is a creature of Congressional law, and that he "looks forward" to discussing the lifting of the embargo with Cuba. Obama: "Todos sommos Americanos." Which I assume means "We are all Americans." Um... no we're not. What they'll do is say "We are in fact all inhabitants of The Americas," and make fun of dumb conservatives for "not knowing" this. But given his unilateral immigration move, I think he's actually sending out the signal that we are literally all Americans, anyone who wants to be and who can jump a fence.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: kathysaysso at December 17, 2014 11:54 AM (fMQoG) 2

I wonder if it has something to do with 2016. If you were a Dem, and you were looking to undermine potential R candidates, who would this affect the most? Rubio? Jeb? I'm not saying I think that's the case here, but it's worth considering. Posted by: BurtTC at December 17, 2014 11:57 AM (TOk1P) 10

Unfortunately, this will do nothing for Cuba. The country has had American tourists traveling there for decades now (unofficially, of course), and it hasn't helped things at all. Once you get away from the tourist spots, the country - even Havana - looks horrific. Michael Totten was there a year or two ago, and wandered off the beaten path. The pictures he took look like what you'd expect to see if squatters moved into a city that had been abandoned for over a decade.
The only thing that this will do for Cuba is to line Castro's pockets even more than they already are. Posted by: junior at December 17, 2014 12:05 PM (UWFpX) 35
Reposting this, since it probably got willowed in the earlier thread...
Truth be told, communism in Cuba is strictly window-dressing. Sure, they have the totalitarian police state thing down solid, local committees for 'ideological purity', neighbors informing on each other, etc, etc... ...but everything revolves around the Cult of Castro (and Che)... and the Castros are very, very rich. Example: all those factories built by Western/European companies... they make a big deal out of saying they pay Cuban workers 'standard wages' (10-15 euros/hr). No... they hand all those paychecks over to the Cuban government... then the govt cuts a check giving those same workers the equivalent of $1-5/day. Wanna guess where the difference goes? Cubans are deliberately kept poor... and isolated, in spite of all the touristas flowing into Cuba. Everything is geared towards maintaining state power, and the perpetuation of the Glorious Revolucion mythos. IF this is happening, don't hold your breath waiting to see if any of the above changes... Posted by: CPT. Charles at December 17, 2014 12:06 PM (/mTq0) 36

This isn't happening "because Cuba took a hostage". At least not in the classic sense. Obama is using this as an excuse to do what he wanted to do anyway. The Bergdahl situation is a good example. Obama used the Bergdahl "hostage" situation to do what he wanted to do anyway, i.e. free some really dangerous guys from Guantanamo. 1. 0bama gets to give a speech so that everyone remembers him and his foreign policy...while Russia is going through conniptions. There is a none-too-subtle linkage here. Also signals Putin that all the sanctions don't have to stay, buddy. C'mon in from the cold. 2. By talking about this other stuff, that Obama is swapping 3 guys for 1 gets less play. Big story is "normalizing relations after 60 years" instead of "Bergdahl II." Hence, my belief the timing here is about Russia and optics instead of Cuba. @98 Didn't I read relatively recently recently that Cubans in Cuba tend to have money, just that there's nothing to buy with it? Was it Totten's tour?
-------------------- Totten might have mentioned it. I don't recall. But if so, not everyone does. The problems in Cuba are, basically - - Screwed up insanely low wages - Impossible to get basic necessities in any appreciable quantities. - Standing out in any way makes you a target for the secret police; this applies even if the reason for your standing out has *nothing* whatsoever to do with a possible threat to the state. Those three points all combine to demonstrate why buildings are in such a sorry state in Cuba. First, very few people can afford to carry out the basic maintenance over the long term. Second, the people that can somehow afford it can't get the materials that they'd need to do so. Third, if someone can get the materials needed to perform upkeep on their home, the mere fact that their home was being kept up while their neighbors' homes were deteriorating would be enough to draw the attention of the secret police, and probably get them arrested. It's also worth noting that part of the reason for the arrest would be the almost certainly accurate charge that the person upkeeping their homing had gone to the black market to get some of the things that they required (and also sold some items on the black market to get the money that they needed). Keep in mind that these problems in Cuba have existed even though the US is essentially the only country that isn't legally able to do business with Cuba. And despite the fact that US citizens have been visiting Cuba as tourists for decades, despite the travel ban. Posted by: junior at December 17, 2014 12:31 PM (UWFpX) 168

#79, FFS. Enough of this idiotic, NPR-level crap about "why have relations with Saudi Arabia but not Cuba?
How about - because "relations" with Cuba are utterly trivial, the place is of no great importance, and there is every possibility that the evil and degradation its criminal regime represents will/can be diminished and damaged. Saudi Arabia is strategically critical, duh. It's like comparing Tuvalu with China in terms of economic or strategic importance. Oh - and in the earlier thread lots of morons were beclowning themselves with nonsense about how travel and contact will undermine the Cuban criminal enterprise masquerading as a corrupt brutal derelict regime. WTF? Try learning something about Cuban reality. Totten's article, mentioned above, is a good quick start. The Cuban regime doesn't control the place because no Americans are among the tourists at the hotels in Veradero. Or because US companies aren't part of the administered slave-labor system of foreign factories/etc. in Cuba. It controls the place through a comprehensive, unrelenting, tightly run totalitarian system of raw power and exploitation of all the worst of human nature to maintain fear. Look up the Stasi situation in the former East Germany for a taste of how all of life is suffused with fear, treachery, betrayal. Posted by: rhomboid at December 17, 2014 12:38 PM (afQnV) 204

Didn't read any of the comments, so this could be unneeded repetition. My reactions.
1. How could this released American be in poor health when Michael Moore assured us that Cuba has the best health care system in the world? 2. Ultimately, this may be an end run to close Gitmo. As I recall, US possession of that portion of Cuba is by lease. Perhaps one of the demands of Cuba will be the early termination of the lease allowing for a two-fer: close Gitmo and reduce American military presence in the region. 3. Part of the speech I heard included the upbeat report that Americans could visit Cuba. I didn't hear anything about Cubans being free to visit the US. 4. On the other hand this could just be a deal among Communists to stick it to us. Posted by: The Poster Formerly Known as Mr. Barky at December 17, 2014 12:42 PM (lJLML) 230

Re: Cubans coming here en masse. First the Cuban government has to allow you to leave. The reason there are Cubans found floating on junk rafts outside of Miami is because they have to sneak onto the beach in Cuba in the dark of the moon to leave. Getting caught meant getting prison time at least. And we have traditionally always given them asylum if they washed ashore or were picked up by an American boat because of the knowledge that if they were sent back, being immediately shot by their government would be the least unpleasant thing to happen to them.
So....it's going to take lots of American $$$ to the Castro's to make purchasing Cuban's a reality. Which , I"m sure the Obama regime is happy to do, under the guise of , humanitarian aid. So is Hillary's. ========================= These days Shrillary reminds me of the former Chief Mean Girl who was queen bitch of her high school class, but doesn't understand why none of the other girls want to talk to her at the 10th anniversary.
