Overnight Open Thread (6 Dec 2014)

Not a shocker. Rolling Stone has not retracted its UVA rape story.

Also not a shocker. Defense bill is littered with nonsense.

One provision pushes forward a National Women's History Museum in Washington, DC - long advocated by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan).

In all, more than a quarter of the 1,648-page defense bill is dedicated to federal land-use projects, angering some conservatives upset that a critical defense bill is slathered with pork projects.

Manly Test

So morons, how manly are you? Take the test and find out.

100 Years Of Beauty

So what's your favorite decade?

The New Normal

Oh I'm sure it won't just be whooping cough that becomes the new normal in disease outbreaks. Big whooping cough outbreaks could become the 'new normal'.
Related: The measles outbreak coming near you.

Measles is making a terrifying comeback in the U.S., with some 600 cases reported this year, more than in any year in the past two decades. There are two reasons: ,the ease of international travel, and an increasing number of people refusing vaccinations, usually on behalf of their children.

Uh uh. Ease of international travel? Is that a new code being put in use now?

Modern Art

They don't do art like they used to. NSFW!!!! Usher charges iPhone in woman's vagina at the Art Basel in Miami.

The woman wanted to show how humans have become dependent on technology and she felt a super-charged vagina would help make her point.

Animal Fails Compilation

Dating Options

This is getting ridiculous. Online dating sites are adding many more options just to confuse the shit out of you even more. Sapiosexual seeks same: a new lexicon enters the dating mainstream. Squiggly didn't make the cut. Yet.

"One young woman defined herself as 'squiggly,' " he says. "And there was silence and everyone was saying, 'What exactly is that?' And then she said, 'Well, I feel like that's what I am in terms of my gender and sexuality. I'm squiggly.'

Irony Alert

Now this is funny. All these protesters are enabling cops to get lots 'o overtime cash.

"If the protesters want to pay me so I can make sure all my Christmas bills are paid, that's fine with me," said another.

ABC: Republicans will hold at least 246 House seats come January, according to election results Saturday, giving the GOP a commanding majority that matches the party's post-World War II high during Democratic President Harry S. Truman's administration.

The GOP retained control of two seats in runoffs in Louisiana, expanding the advantage for Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who can afford defections from his increasingly conservative caucus and still get legislation passed.

Hundreds of protesters in an already scheduled march against police brutality staged a die-in at the iconic corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, where a man was fatally shot by police.

Cellphone video captured the aftermath of the incident, which unfolded Friday night about 7 p.m. after officers said they responded to an "assault with a deadly weapon" in-progress call.

The Los Angeles Police Department says the man did not comply with officers' orders to "get down."

204 The Manly test was stupid beyond words.

The first question underscores that. What kind of fool strips down and sticks a maglight in their teeth to handle an electrical problem? You pull ON the rubber boots and thick rubber gloves; any handyman without a decent LED headlight these days is a dinosaur. THEN you get the "electrical" tool box with all the GOOD insulated tools and use the non-contact circuit detector to find the faults. Then, power-off before repair.

You don't have those tools or know how to use them? Fine, call an electrician; we live in a highly technical modern society that steers us towards specialization. Don't fuck with alternating current, especially that 230 volt shit in the UK where this test is from, it'll kill you.

At least you did not go to a local indie movie to network and have your sense of story telling abused like I did. Friends with one of the production crew and messed with their brains on the segment they most proud of - compared the ending of that segment to the ending of the book The Island of Crimea. Which means they will probably just nod and pretend to really know what I am talking about.

OK, I know I'm probably in the minority, but in general I like spiders. They don't bother me and I don't bother them, and they are very helpful in general. In the library, I just leave them alone so that they can eat all of the other bugs that come in; in the rest of the house I capture them with a glass and a piece of cardboard and escort them outside into the garden.

Same thing applies to garden spiders. When they build a web across a frequently-traveled path, I catch them and move them into an out-of-the way corner of the yard, so that they can continue to catch mosquitoes without accidentally snagging me.

Very good point. So in the interests of full disclosure, I should note that there are certain kinds of spiders that I already know are poisonous or that I classify as "unpredictable and fast" that I will squash when I find them (or they find me). Most spiders, however, are in the "live and let live" category. When I give one a corner of the library to live in, you'd be surprised to see all of the dessicated insect carcasses that show up underneath the web. Good enough for me.

A general warning: really, spider guys, you shouldn't hide in my firewood. Sometimes I don't see you until it's too late to save you.

UFC PPVs are down though, revenue is down, their debt got degraded, Viacom is putting some real money into Bellator as competition -- so I think it's a sign UFC is feeling the heat.

Casual interest in UFC is down a lot from the peak 4 years ago -- when they had Brock Lesnar.

So bit of a desperate move by UFC to try and grab some crossover casual fans.

There are also rumors Lesnar might go back to UFC for one more run.

Warning to those that get creeped - don't continue reading!

When I first bought my house, I was twenty & had a couple roommates. We had a game room set up in the garage... you know the deal - free carpet from Mom's house, couches we picked from the curb on trash day, an old coin-op pool table, a dart board, and a beermeister.

Anyway, one day we watched a small spider slowly web her way down from the rafters to the floor. As soon as she hit the carpet, I stomped on it.

Then I picked my foot up - i cannot explain the sound of seven guys running and screaming and tripping over each other...
did you know that spiders can have something like five hundred thousand babies inside them? And they all came out - I think they were chasing us, i dont know.

I used to kill spiders on sight, but I've learned to distinguish between different kinds. The ones that hang out in corners and mind their own business I leave alone. As for the ones that wander about, nowadays I keep jars with pieces of cardboard to catch and release them outside. Old mayonnaise or peanut butter jars are the ideal size for this purpose. I have one in every room of the house.

I also have a flyswatter in every room of the house. Those are for centipedes.

465 The touching part of the original Casino Royale was Niven's little voice-over at the end, talking about how silly it was to glorify spycraft. Niven, as many of you know, commanded commandos in WWII. Other than that, yeah, a disaster.

Know who else was a regular war hero? Noel Coward, destroyer captain. Huh.

Aside from Niven, who only kind of played Bond, the only actor in the role who had any operative experience was Lazenby, who was a judo instructor in the Australian army. And here you thought he was just an underwear model.

IMO, that's why "Goldfinger" was all about the babes (building that particular aspect of the Bond 'mystique'), while FRWL was (mostly) the 'spycraft' angle.

With "Thunderball", the pendulum swings partway back to babe angle, but with a healthy dose of action and a decent amount of spycraft.

Thunderball makes it into my 'Top 5' Bond flicks...

475 Casino Royale was the first Bond novel, and possibly the best. The villain was not some superhuman monster, just a Commie union thug with a gambling habit, and Bond's task was to use that habit to destroy him.

You know, throughout the series of novels, Fleming drops hints about Bond's back story. I wonder if any authors have tried to write "prequels"? I do believe there are some post-Fleming Bond novels, but I don't think they are set in that era.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 07, 2014 12:47 AM (8Fl6F)

476 AOP, that's a good question. I've also read that in the original 1952 "Casino Royale," there's actually a scene where Bond fistfights with an enemy... and gets his clock cleaned.

Unfortunately, that window is long shut; the book is so dated now that it's a dead duck as a viable film premise. And, too many of the Fleming books are in the same boat.

Fans complained when he went to Istanbul in Skyfall because he had already been there once ... forty years prior in From Russia with Love. And even if riding over the rooftops is different from gondolas in the flooded catacombs, they are right to complain. Bond's exotic universe expands faster than the speed of fiction.

Well, the movie franchise always put James Bond in the present, and all his gadgets, and many of the plot devices were based on current events. What if you were to reboot the movies as period pieces, set in the early to mid 1950's, with the technology of the day? Which was not too shabby, anyway. In the novels, Bond had a blower Bentley, circa 1929, as his personal car, and used it (and got it wrecked in an ambush) in Casino Royale.

And then there are the 'current realities'... YOLT could be done, easily; BUT, the ChiComs wouldn't be the villains behind the scenes*.

It's been great to remind educators that their evil crap pushed by Bush (No Child Left Behind) was a bipartisan effort w/ Teddy (off the bridge) Kennedy.

Go figure.

Drilling a wildcat well. Turned out to be a dry hole, but I think the area has potential. Every lava flow we penetrated had a puff of gas beneath it, which had to come from somewhere.

I was a mudlogger on that job. Greenland was awesome. Fantastic scenery.

535 Similar thing happened with Danica Patrick in Nascar. Tons of mainstream press -- yet TV ratings declined when she joined.
Posted by: Costanza Defense at December 07, 2014 12:17 AM (ZPrif)

Look at what happened to IndyCar when she left. They had a bunch of drivers that nobody had ever heard of. Good drivers, drivers that won the races and the championships, but nobody had ever heard of them because Danica got all the press and usually finished in the middle of the pack.

Last year in NASCAR David Regan and David Gilliland got 1/100th of the coverage that she did. Yet, both finished ahead of her, and David Regan even won a race.

536 As to who should make the 4 team college playoff, let's see who each team lost to during the season:

FSU- No one.
Oregon- Beat everyone they played
Alabama- Lost at Mississippi
TCU- Lost at Baylor by 3
Baylor- Lost at WVa by 14
Ohio State- Lost to Virginia Tech at home by 14

If you lose a home game to a team that finished tied for last in the ACC Coastal division, you do not deserve to be playing for a National Championship. The Orange Bowl is a good destination for you.

If you lose to the 5th place team in your league by 14 points, you do not get to play for a National Championship, you get a trip to the Cotton Bowl.

So the top 4 will be:

1. Alabama
2. Oregon
3. FSU
4. TCU

Sugar Bowl: Bama vs TCU
Rose Bowl: Oregon vs FSU

If the committee decides that they don't want the chance of Bama and FSU playing in the Championship game, then it will work the rankings so that Bama/FSU will be Sugar Bowl. If that means they are 1-4 or 2-3, it doesn't matter. The committee will make sure that Bama is in the Sugar and Oregon in the Rose.

My Greenland pics are all paper prints and 35 mm negatives. Before I ever heard of digital cameras. I ought to scan them, and put up an album on Photobucket, or elsewhere. What is the best way to scan a large hoard of old photos? Do it from prints, or from negatives? My little HP printer can scan, but it would be a huge undertaking to scan all my drawers full of prints.

552 I've been bouncing along the bottom since the post 9/11 crash, and I'm sure at least one person here probably remembers my rants about being treated like a subhuman by the Free Shit Army as a retail peon in FL. A year ago, I moved to Texas to put as much distance between me and those people as I could without ending up on the Left Coast or in another country. Today, I just got promoted into my first stable full-time job with benefits in a whole damn decade. (I've had full-time jobs since, but neither stable nor having benefits).

I never thought I'd say it, but life is good. Who knew?

554 I'm kind of a semi-regular poster these days. My habit lately's been to go dormant for a day or three, where I just read the blog, then find something to comment about and pop in for a few posts at any random hour of the day or night (thanks to the fact that I might be working any given shift, thus up at any hour), and get distracted by something and forget to follow up until the topic is long dead.

Might get to be a more frequent ONT commenter now that I'm on a permanent night shift rotation, and will likely have long stretches with little to do.

560 55 The 100 years of beauty thing doesn't work so well because they really can't cut her hair. They echo the styles a bit but the haircut limits getting the full look of each era.

They could've done the 'dos out of sequence, beginning with the decade requiring the longest hair ('70's Farrah?) & ending with the shortest (20's Gibson Girl?). Then putting them in sequence post-production. Would've been less clever, but perhaps more accurate. But still doesn't account for how differing amounts of body fat defined the beauty trends through the decades.

4. Photo-Book provided by Shutterfly;

5. Train Conductor and Engineer hats were optional, but not surprisingly, all 7 of the guys wore one.

Do you think that will make a difference?

Remember that teh wimminz have already declared that "truth" is not important in this story -- knowing that this "Jackie" person could have been assaulted in a rapey (or rape-rapey) way is all that matters. There is lots of guilt to go around here, and it's all on the Evil Men.

This is 21st-Century America, where white, heterosexual, middle-class, non-ultra-liberal men are guilty and cannot be proven innocent. Not ever.

I know the thread is dead, but I left the window open when I went to bed last night.

The 1920s women were called "flappers", and you're right, short hair was in. The Gibson Girl was around 1890-1910, I believe. Just going off of memory, they had long, luxuriant hair worn "up", and wore corsets emphasizing their hips.

Damn, I nearly talked myself back into the bunk.
