Quote of the Day I

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

-- C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)

Quote of the Day II

"I remember Christian teachers telling me long ago that I must hate a bad man's actions but not hate the bad man: or, as they would say, hate the sin but not the sinner. ...I used to think this a silly, straw-splitting distinction: how could you hate what a man did and not hate the man? But years later it occurred to me that there was one man to whom I had been doing this all my life -- namely myself. However much I might dislike my own cowardice or conceit or greed, I went on loving myself. There had never been the slightest difficulty about it. In fact the very reason why I hated the things was that I loved the man. Just because I loved myself, I was sorry to find that I was the sort of man who did those things."

-- C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Quote of the Day III

"Perhaps it has sometimes happened to you in a dream that someone says something which you don't understand but in the dream it feels as if it had some enormous meaning-either a terrifying one which turns the whole dream into a nightmare or else a lovely meaning too lovely to put into words, which makes the dream so beautiful that you remember it all your life and are always wishing you could get into that dream again. It was like that now."

-- C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Quote of the Day IV - Media Edition

"It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out."

-- C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

Lena Dunham 'Raped by a Republican' Story in Biography Collapses Under Scrutiny

After a month-long investigation Breitbart News was unable to verify any detail of her story or find anyone matching her specific description who attended Oberlin during the years she was a student.

Dunham also goes into great detail to describe Barry. Here's what she tells us -- everything in quotation marks is directly from the memoir:

1. The name of Lena Dunham's rapist is Barry. Early in the memoir, when Dunham uses a pseudonym, she informs the reader of that fact. She did not do so in this instance, leaving the reader to assume that Barry is her alleged rapist's real name.

2. Dunham was a 19-year-old Oberlin College student when the incident occurred.

3. Barry was the "campus's resident conservative."

4. Barry "hosted a radio show called Real Talk with Jimbo."

5. Barry "wore purple cowboy boots."

6. The incident occurred in winter.

7. The incident occurred just before Barry graduated in December of that same year.

8. Barry was a "mustachioed campus Republican" with a "mustache that rode the line between ironic Williamsburg fashion and big buck hunter."

9. Barry "worked part-time at the library. shelving books."

10. Barry had a voice "that went Barry White low."

Also, as National Review's Kevin Williamson points out, Barry is not a common name. It doesn't even rank in the top 100 as a popular male name.

In a relatively small school with fewer than 3,000 students, it shouldn't be difficult to get a line on someone that flamboyant named Barry. Moreover, Oberlin isn't just a liberal school; it is a famously liberal school where Republicans stand out like nuns on a football field.

Nevertheless, no amount of digging could verify even a single detail of Dunham's rape claim.

There was a Republican student with the first name 'Barry' who did graduate while Dunham was a student and he has been widely pointed to on the internet as being the rapist. But he doesn't fit the details of her description and swears he never met her while he was a student at Oberlin.

And Dunham has never bothered to either exonerate this 'Barry one' or to confirm that he was the guy she was referring to. Which means she is either letting a repeat rapist go free or implicitly accusing an innocent man of raping her. Or just making up a story to juice up her book.

Rolling Stone and the UVA Rape

Rolling Stone has now tried to make UVA's response to 'Jackie''s report of being raped at a fraternity a year previously the central issue but here Neo-neocon points out that the university in fact treated her like an adult and offered her several options as to how to pursue her complaint.

All of the options offered seem reasonable to me so I'm unclear on why Jackie was so upset and why we're supposed to be outraged over this. Unless it was the fact that all the options offered did involve some sort of investigation into the veracity of her complaint.

When Jackie finished talking, Eramo comforted her, then calmly laid out her options. If Jackie wished, she could file a criminal complaint with police. Or, if Jackie preferred to keep the matter within the university, she had two choices. She could file a complaint with the school's Sexual Misconduct Board, to be decided in a "formal resolution" with a jury of students and faculty, and a dean as judge. Or Jackie could choose an "informal resolution," in which Jackie could simply face her attackers in Eramo's presence and tell them how she felt; Eramo could then issue a directive to the men, such as suggesting counseling. Eramo presented each option to Jackie neutrally, giving each equal weight. She assured Jackie there was no pressure - whatever happened next was entirely her choice.

Like many schools, UVA has taken to emphasizing that in matters of sexual assault, it caters to victim choice. "If students feel that we are forcing them into a criminal or disciplinary process that they don't want to be part of, frankly, we'd be concerned that we would get fewer reports," says associate VP for student affairs Susan Davis. Which in theory makes sense: Being forced into an unwanted choice is a sensitive point for the victims. But in practice, that utter lack of guidance can be counterproductive to a 19-year-old so traumatized as Jackie was that she was contemplating suicide. Setting aside for a moment the absurdity of a school offering to handle the investigation and adjudication of a felony sex crime - something Title IX requires, but which no university on Earth is equipped to do - the sheer menu of choices, paired with the reassurance that any choice is the right one, often has the end result of coddling the victim into doing nothing.

So at 19 years old is Jackie an adult or not? Legally she is and the university treated her as an adult capable of making her own decisions. Yet Erdely in her article makes Jackie's inaction the fault of UVA for not treating her like a child and making all the decisions for her.

Why Is Hillary Even a Contender?

This is disturbing because Hillary Clinton has no natural claim to her party's nomination.

She's not even an especially gifted politician. Aside from the spectacular incompetence of her 2008 campaign, she is as gaffe-prone as Dan Quayle and as awkward as Bob Dole.

It doesn't speak well of the health of the Democratic Party that she and its voters seem to think she does have that claim. Rather, it's a mark of lifelessness, of a hardening of the party's arteries.

43 Ms Dunham's allegation of molesting her little sister is sick, but it falls in the idea that the true mark of a celebrity is that they do things freely that normal people would be thrown into jail for doing.
Ms Dunham clearly wished to be a celebrity, and is presenting herself as doing "those celebrity things". Whether she did them or not is clearly not the point for Ms Dunham, but that she be seen as doing them and not be punished for them.
This way she gets to ape that status she so clearly craves.

339 Well Adriane it probably would help this movie if it was just one story. But the title is Sequence and its composed of four shorts - "Yazoo Women, Dreamscape, The Temperature of Father Martin," and "Never Cold in Vegas."

The only one of the four to have a definable beginning, middle, and end is also the shortest and first shown - "Yazoo Women." Three good ol boys deliver to this woman in a faux leopard print blouse and tight black skirt a riding mower. They get invited inside for a drink of water and find out its a divorce party. The boys get picked up by a few of the cougars. And last shot the boys are driving back in their pick-up and then you notice one of the cougars is all snuggled tight on the driver.

After my mother passed away, I found that she had kept all of my letters over the years in a box. There should have been more than there were...

384 Some interesting work on the genetics of sub-Saharan Africans.

One interesting bit is much of the, often remarked upon, genetic diversity across Africa is a function of quite recent Eurasian mixing, on a historical scale. In particular, the rise and fall of ancient Egypt left a huge imprint on east African genetics.

The Bantu explosion is how the Bantu farmers exploded in population and swamped the hunter-gatherer tribes across Africa.

This new ability to reconstruct human history through DNA analysis is quite amazing.

399 Costanza - I only checked briefly on the youtube link and one news site, but it appears some jihadis attacked a police checkpoint in Grozny and then occupied the Press House (journalists' center) downtown. The Chechen leader was starting to implement a security operation at the time. I haven't followed up so don't know the rest.

Like so much else I used to either follow closely or actually be involved in, I've completely lost track of things in Chechnya. But it appears that indelicate Russian (i.e., normal, historically and world-wide) methods have kept Chechnya under Russian control.

Having done both, I think I prefer reading about the version told by Lermontov (Hero of Our Times) to being briefed on or partaking in the modern Caucasus story. Not all that much has changed. Should find a copy, would be good practice to jump start my atrophied russki as well.

406 Anyone know if "bomb art" still happens (since we're still, feebly, in that business, a little)? Some great WWII stuff I've seen in photos, of course.

Actually there was an editorial cartoon from 1991, right after the start of the air campaign, with sequential bombs falling and the words "With apologies for my rude letter - G Bush" painted on them. Fantastic.

Of course that was 2,000 years ago, it seems. And that letter given by Baker to Tariq Aziz in Geneva, a pretty amazing document even by post-WWII standards, is literally unimaginable now.

408 I tell my true stories, the difference between Dunham and me is that mine are actually true.

Just like that piece of shit who made millions off of that piece of shit book and movie "Jarhead."

Those who served with me, who witness me breaking bitches, those who have seen me wade into a tsunami of abuse, They would support me, but since my stories are based on my times as a Marine, I would never ask them to validate it, though were I to, they would.

What is different between Wickedpinto and all of the "true stories" of the lefty accolytes? Hint, nothing, though there is ONE important difference.

Mesa has witnessed some of my true stories, as has steve ,one of them, I forget which one, and If I call on my friends, they will support it because they don't like their friend, me, being abused. That's WHAT MARINES DO!

But I would never ask, and also, the big BIG BIG GIGANTIC difference?

I'm not getting paid, and even if I were I wouldn't lie about my friends, I wouldn't lie about myself, and I ESPECIALLY wouldn't accuse anyone of ONE FUCKING THING without giving a name.

450 Any ONT where Maet quotes CS Lewis is a very good ONT.

My favorite Lewis:
The Chronicles of Narnia -- no words can sum up how deeply I feel about all seven books.
Mere Christianity -- brilliant. He makes one think new thoughts, everything makes sense (it's all logic), plus his prose are lovely.
Perelandra -- like a gentle lullaby in the beginning, but it's a graphic retelling of Adam and Eve's Fall.
His letters to children, compiled in a book. Lovely man.

Lewis I've yet to read and hope to soon:

I highly recommend the Screwtape Letters if you haven't already read it.

Through chance and sheer boredom I ended up reading a found copy in the 7th grade while killing time everyday in the backseat of a friend's mother's car after wrestling practice. It wasn't the easiest read and I'm sure half of it went over my head but it had a flavor unlike anything else I had ever read before. And it managed to be enlightening and funny even to a kid like me without being preachy or didactic. In retrospect it's clear CS Lewis had a better understanding of true human nature than many psychologists do today.

470 Adrianne,
I may have watched The Omega Man a lifetime ago - don't remember it. But I did just learn that it was based on I Am Legend, and that the Will Smith flick was the third adaptation of the book. Go know.

The question was serious, btw.
I want to sleep, and I am beat. I heard about melatonin from the horde & it worked - for about a week.

Argh! melatonin.

Sorry.

Semi - natural sleep aids: 1 asprin tablet in warm milk. Asprin & not ibupropen or such.

Other - warm eye compress. During natural sleep the eyes warm up, during drug induced sleep they don't ... so, trick your body with a warm eye compress. I have had fairly good luck with this one ...

Posted by: Adriane the Music Critic ... at December 05, 2014 02:51 AM (P+IZm)

473 Thanks for that, CAPT.
When I bought this bottle I got the lowest dose I could find - 300 mcg. So even if I take three (which I've done twice), its less than a gram.

Unfortunately, I've alwAys had insomnia. I remember lying in my bunk bed as a kid and being awake all night long. Just couldn't get to sleep. I would count the grains of sand in the plaster ceiling...

Nowadays, I do physical work all day (sometimes 14 hour days), come home beat like a rented mule, and can't sleep for more than three or four hours at a time - if I can get to sleep.

Oh well. Is bourbon "natural"?

As weird as it sounds, maybe try taking 2 naps a night instead of one "longer" sleep.

Medieval monks had a nap after their working day. Then up for late evening prayer and meditation, then a longer nap post midnight / 1 am-ish.

Since you know you can't sleep, use the intermediate time for reading and such. No vacuuming, though ...

I don't truly understand the renamed American Heroes Channel, which does not appear to have changed its playlist one whit. They're doing mysteries of the Bible. I've been here, lurking everyday, posting most days even if it's just a couple of posts before bedtime

shredded chi - I've accepted the fact that I really don't need a lot of sleep - 4 to 5 hours a night, with a sleepin on Saturday or Sunday, and if I get home early from work I have a nap on the couch - 45 mins max

It's just how I am and I really don't worry anymore - why lie around for hours trying to sleep?

Now I sign off here, hit the pillow at 2am, after reading a couple of pages of something on my Kindle - and I'm unconscious for 5 hours - wake up refreshed

512 My supervisor wants me (and all the other clergy in our area) to attend a time of worship and prayers for peace and justice after Ferguson and NYC and discussion lead by the African American clergy of our area I have something else to do and can't go. I want all of the clergy and laypeople to pray for peace and justice. Unfortunately what I can't write to my very nice, intelligent and accomplished and whiter than pale supervisor is that I think justice was achieved in Ferguson and while I think there may be some questions about the incident in NYC I don't know that it was racially motivated. I have been attending various meetings since the 1990's where the clergy are periodically lectured to about white privilege and racism. If I were to go to this meeting on Sunday I expect I'll hear a lot about the unfairness of the justice system but not much about how AA owned businesses were burned by some AA and certainly nothing about how Michael's Brown's actions contributed to his death. If I were to raise this at that meeting I might be considered racist which is not a good thing to be considered by your supervisor. So I guess I have to raise thee concerns with an AA colleague who i will see next week. I guess there are people in the business world who have to deal with this sort of thing too. It's frustrating when you're a person of goodwill and take people as individuals than as part of a group and yet are automatically considered racist merely because you don't accept leftist taking points.
