Overnight Open Thread (12-3-2014) - Holy Crap Christmas is 3 Weeks Away!! Edition

Yeah I know - this ONT sucks. Which is why I advise you to go read this one instead but comment here. Or else get the pixy auto-banning.

Quote of the Day

"Mr Brand is fond of having himself depicted as Che Guevara, a figure for whom he shares the daft enthusiasm of many members of his generation. He frets that Guevara was "a bit of a homophobe," but insists that "we need only glance at Che to know that that is what a leader should look like," i.e., a bit like Russell Brand. Guevara was a mass murderer who shot people for amusement. The cause in which he fought was the cause of gulags and murder. There are today, at this moment, thousands of political prisoners being tortured in prisons that Guevara helped to establish, and millions foundering in the totalitarian police state he helped to found off the coast of Florida. But. sure, great hair."

-- Kevin Williamson on Russell Brand

Claims About Russia

Sergei Guriev, a former adviser to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and a former board member of Russia's largest state bank, said: "If nothing changes, if sanctions aren't removed and the price of oil does not go up, then in two years the Russian government will have a major problem - it will lack cash and it will not be able to borrow it."

Poll: Germans United Against Russia

The Politbarometer poll for ZDF television found 58 percent back the EU sanctions [against Russia] even if they damage the German economy, up from 52 percent a month ago.

The poll also found that 76 percent backed the sharper tone of Merkel's recent criticisms of President Vladimir Putin's policies.

Rolling Stone Hedges Its Bets on the UVA Rape Story

Here is the problem that Rolling Stone has: The magazine clearly has lost confidence that it knows what happened that night-despite the fact that it published a chillingly specific account of a gang rape. And it can not re-report the story now. What's done is done.

Also, it wants to put the onus of responsibility on Jackie, without looking like it is discrediting her. The magazine is carefully distancing itself from its primary source, but doing so in a way that it hopes no one will notice.

Nor will Rolling Stone simply admit that it screwed up.

And so it is using carefully crafted language to frame Jackie's story as significant whether it's true or not; the really important thing is how the University responded to it.

Which is a morally reprehensible argument.

And as the author points out if Rolling Stone with all its resources has been unable to verify the story, then maybe the University of VA's response isn't quite as scandalous as Rolling Stone is trying to make it out.

Jonah Goldberg Expresses Doubt About Rolling Stone's UVA Story

And Sabrina Erdely's journalism.

Erdely admits she set out to find a sexual assault story at an elite school. She looked at lots of other colleges, but none "felt quite right," in the words of a Washington Post media column on the piece. But UVA - which Erdely would go on to describe in the Rolling Stone article as a school without a thriving "radical feminist culture seeking to upend the patriarchy" - was just right.

Erdely wouldn't tell the Washington Post if she made an effort to corroborate the story with Drew, let alone the pledges. Bizarrely, she won't even say whether she knows the rapists' real names. She seems more eager to talk about public policy than the facts she reported.

And the SJW/Journalist Industrial Complex Strikes Back.

NYT Reporter Who Published Darren Wilson's Address Feeling the Heat

Rise of the AR-15

Variants of the AR-15 have been the most commonly sold guns in the US for several years now.

In a country where gun ownership is assured by the Constitution, the supply of ARs is abundant. Some even call it a glut.

It seems the battle over these guns, if not over, is close to it.

"I think the shift you're seeing now is the military-style weapon is here to stay because it's appealing to a whole new generation," said Steve Denny, owner of Carolina Guns & Gear in Arden, which has a wall full of military-style weapons for sale.

"You can see it in the industry," Denney said. "The industry had to change from military-style weapons being something that they sold sometimes to them being something that is at the forefront of all their advertising - the tactical use of a firearm."

48 FPS: The Pain of the New

I watched the movie The Hobbit. Twice. First I saw it in its "standard" mode. A day later I returned to see The Hobbit in 3D at a high frame rate of 48 frames per second, called HFR. HFR is a cinematic hi-tech that promises greater realism. It was amazingly real. And disturbing at first.

...I was surprised though that the movie in 48HFR looked so different. (The 3D did not have an effect.) Even though both formats were shot with the same cameras and lighting, they appeared to be lighted and shot on different sets. The HFR lighting in the HFR movies seemed harsh, brighter, and more noticeable. The emotional effect of HFR was disturbing for the first 10 minutes. And perplexing - because the only thing different in the two movies was that one was displayed in the 48 frames it was shot at, and the other was computationally reduced down to the normal 24 frames per second. Why would the frame rate distort the lighting and the emotion?

I was not the only one who noticed. The HFR version of the Hobbit - the first commercial movie to be released in this new format - stirred up howls from the critics. Very few filmish people liked what they saw. For most it was painful.

Later in the article visual effects guru John Knoll explains why 48fps is so jarring in movies today and how Hollywood will adjust for it.

Also: What is the 'Soap Opera Effect'?

32 Why would the frame rate distort the lighting and the emotion?

Twice as many frames adds twice the detail, twice the intensity of the image. Twice as many 'steps' in the motion, more fluid, less blur.

Jarring when you've been used to the softer image of the standard film frame rate.

72 Jay Nordlinger @ NRO has covered the Che worship for years.
Here's just one article on it: http://www.trenblindado.com/nordlinger.html

One of the most nauseating recent celebrations of
Guevara took the form of a movie, The Motorcycle Diaries, whose
executive producer was Robert Redford (one of the most dedicated Castro
apologists in Hollywood, which is saying something). The movie received a
standing ovation at the Sundance Festival. About this obnoxious
hagiography and whitewash, I will confine myself to quoting Tony
Daniels: "It is as if someone were to make a film about Adolf Hitler by
portraying him as a vegetarian who loved animals and was against
unemployment. This would be true, but rather beside the point."

79 Good news, folks.

Hollywood has decided that what everyone really really wants to see this Xmas is a movie about a comic strip whose last fanbase member mumbled "twenty three skidoo" with their last dying breath during the Eisenhower administration. It also inspired a Broadway musical that men would cut off a body part to avoid sitting through.

85 Kind of a weird day today. Gustavo Arellano, the "Ask a Mexican!" columnist I've told you all about in the past, actually said in his column this week: "Conservatives are people too." I wrote back to him on Twitter: "WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE REAL GUSTAVO ARELLANO?!?" ;-)

*And,* Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere, who I've told you about before? How douchey his views are on conservatives? He's been getting into more and more trouble with his readers because he is decidedly NOT on the side of Michael Brown re Ferguson.

PLUS Wells has been championing a new flick from Kevin Costner called "Black or White," which supposedly examines a story regarding race relations from a decidedly *conservative* viewpoint (within the realm of a divorce/child custody story). He even said at his blog today, the "politically correct left" is squashing the film.

2. Uneasy wiv the idea that your God-given right to keep and bear arms has been infringed since 1934? Not a tech-head but know what a file is, and may have heard something about drill-bit chatter once? Go 80% lower. Put your GF's initials as the serial number on the rifle you made just for her.

He was having none of it:

"Because I'm a man, I don't deserve to play that part?" Leto

happened to be gay or lesbian --- they can't play a straight part? Then you've made sure people that are gay,
people that aren't straight, people like the Rayons of the world would
never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts of that
art," Leto said to big applause from the audience."

Either every role is fair game or it's not. You can't have a protected class of characters set aside to only be played by members of that group.

169 79 Good news, folks.

Yes, Little Orphan Annie is back.

It's different this time. This time she's black. Because we won't achieve true equality until we've remade every film since the invention of the camera with a black star and/or cast.

Never fear though. It's being produced by film directing powerhouses Jay-Z and Will Smith. Jamie Foxx plays an updated Daddy Warbucks.

This thing will suck hard enough to pull the ship in Interstellar showing next door out of the worm hole.

181 "From Grozny - the traditional restrained Russian use of firepower..."

There's a low-life layabout junkie from the UK who decided he was going to become a war zone journalist back in the 1990s, and ended up in some of that decade's more unpleasant locales.

One of which was Chechyna while the Russians were having serious troubles there in the aftermath of the dissolution of the USSR. (And apparently still are.)

The post-Red Army version of the Russian military was underpaid, if paid at all, undertrained and underequipped, led by corrupt drunks, and with doctrine badly unsuited to a MOUT fight, but they arrogantly sent columns into downtown Grozny regardless.

Very few of those soldiers came back alive, and they had horrifying stories of what the Chechens did to their captured brothers in arms. Entire mechanized infantry companies pretty much evaporated.

So the Russians fell back on their classic basics. They have always figured artillery to be The God Of War, and they brought up every big tube in the state arsenals (some of which are just colossally sized) plus copious stocks of surplus ammo, and ran continuous fire missions against Grozny 24 hours per day for about two weeks straight. There was very little left of the city after that.

The layabout junkie journalist, who was in the city and barely made it out, said it was like being on the inside of an F5 tornado made out of high explosives, hot metal and shattered concrete fragments.

Myself, I want a Colt Lightweight Commander, Series 70, 1911. 4-1/4" bbl., with an alloy frame. Few ounces less, superb balance and just a gem of a gun.

You reminded me of the black remake of the Wizard of
Oz they did in the '70's, "The Wiz." When you watch it you are
reminded that they were doing tons of coke in Hollywood in those days.
That's the only explanation that makes sense.

Nowadays, while they're still doing drugs, the explanation is that
Hollywood has completely run out of ideas and can only do remakes.

Vaguely recall from the briefings on Chechnyathat that was a notable event with horrific human (non-combatant) cost. I worked around the region at the time, but we were of course forbidden from going into Chechnya.

Maet/others - I don't really have room in secure storage or prudent room in the current spending plan ...... but if I DID start looking at ARs, I'd have to start from scratch learning about them (only walnut - or arctic birch - and blued steel here). This 80% thing is interesting, guy at the range two weeks ago gave me the full briefing, pretty easy to arrange that now. I'll probably just wait. Want to get better with my Garands, and hope to start reloading for them soon. And not excited about a new caliber (I reload everything I shoot except for the 54R, which will be milsurp until supplies dwindle and prices rise).

JEM - if you look on CalGuns there are occasionally Norinco knock-offs of M12s for sale. Almost got one myself, to use in 3-gun "WWII" division. Also a company down in Louisiana converts the old civilian models to M12 configuration.

It's basically just two movies.

I honestly thought he'd done more.
He remade Arthur in 2011, massive flop. $40M production budget. $45 global box office. Studios get half. So they lost almost $20M before you have any market costs -- which is about $40M.

His other movies Sarah Marshall, Greek he was the supporting actor. Arthur was his big starring role in 2011 -- and it lost the studio $20-$60M probably.

Which is probably why he's never starred in a movie since.

Truth be told, that's exactly what any actor does.

Robert Deniro. Al Pacino. Michael Caine. Pick your fav.

They all play themselves. A version, yes. Sometimes bad, sometimes good. Sometimes obnoxious, and sometimes sympathetic.

It's projection and mannerism. It's the ability to moderate your personality on demand.

And, above all, success in H-wood is the luck to be paid to be insincere with flair.

A lot of the spite directed towards Brad Pitt may be deserved. *meh* either way. But he did enunciate one honest thing. Paraphrasing, "Actors like me are a dime a dozen. I got lucky. I don't apologize for it, but it doesn't lend me any credibility."

That right there, if accurate, makes him the most honest man in Babylon.

307 288 Yeah his most popular movies have been where he's a bit part/supporting actor or doesn't appear at all, because most sane people don't want to watch a guy that looks like a "rock star" 2 days before he gets sent to his court mandated 6 months of rehab.

It's worse than that. He has "Earned Clown Face." You know how people say that after 40, you have the face you deserve? (Pause to contemplate Pelosi. Either Pelosi.) He has a face that perfectly expresses how Progressives argue. No thought. Snark and Smarm as far as the eye can see. And an invincibly ignorant faith in his own supreme wisdom.

World's First Anti-Islam Wine Hits the Market

" "Hal & Al's Seventy 72 Virgins" is the world's first wine for anti-Islamic crusaders.

Released by an Australian think-tank and nonprofit group called the Q Society, "72 Virgins"'s profits will be used to fund the group's advocacy against Islamic influence and extremist ideology.

As first mentioned in the Australian newspaper Adelaide Advertiser:

A Barossa wine called Hal & Al's 72 Virgins is being sold as a fundraiser for an anti-Islamic movement that is worried about a "culture war".

The virgins are a reference to the rewards jihadis believe they will receive in Paradise once they kill others and themselves.

Profits from the "fine Australian sparkling wine" will go to the Q Society, which bills itself as "Australia's Leading Islam-critical Movement".

The Q Society warns that Islam is linked to discrimination and violence and run lectures teaching about "the true nature of this totalitarian theocratic ideology". "

328 Missed the cops/dead Blacks threads below from earlier.

In the case of the 12 year old, the cop being "troubled" has the same relevance to Brown stealing cheap cigarillos and being high: It supports or puts into question key facts. In that case the real question is: Did the kid pull what looked like a real gun on a cop or brandish an already pulled what looked like a real gun in a dangerous manner? That is the only thing that really matters. If the answer to either is yes, then a reasonable person in the cops position would feel to be in mortal danger.

In the case of the choking death, the man committed a crime, was being confrontational against the officers. How long did the officers wait before finally grabbing him and had they exhausted more peaceful means? Even then, was the choke-hold done in a non-standard way or in a way that was clearly meant to unnecessarily hurt or cause pain? I saw it noted that they didn't try to do anything to help the mad after the fact... that portion if true is worthy of condemnation.

I don't have all the facts, and I will withhold judgement until I have them.

torque, that's another reason the AR bug hasn't bitten - when you have to consult a complicated flow-chart (you've probably seen it on CalGuns) just to know what you can own, and the allowed configurations ...... f**k it! As I say bitterly to people at the range, in CA every citizen is having to become a jailhouse lawyer just to live here, within "the law".

I'm so ignorant of ARs that when I do the timer/range officer thing at shootin' matches, I barely know how to have the shooters clear their rifles, apart from seeing the mags out and chamber clear, of course. But I did get to "sit in" on some Navy EOD folks getting their M249 familiarization a few months ago at the range, so I know how to change barrels, load both both ways, clear jams, etc. So I've got that going for me.

379 Hat, how did your interview go?

Posted by: Country Singer at December 04, 2014 12:30 AM (nL0sw)

It was an all day thing, with over a dozen separate chats, multiple presentations, c. I was hoarse with all the interviews for 8+ hours and a bit fatigued. For the "chalk talk" portion I didn't use the space on the White board optimally (didn't have one to practice on), and it wasn't as smooth as it ought to have been. However, the what was presented was good (IMHO), and I didn't make too many screw-ups while hopefully hitting on points that they were looking for.
I'm not the only candidate, and I probably wasn't as slick in the presentation as other candidates, but I have a strong enough background, experience, and such to be competitive.

382 Here's a great anti-Radio-Shack heartwarming story:

In Berkeley, there is one of the last remaining truly old-old-school electronic stores left in the USA -- Al Lasher's Electronics. Been there since the Cretaceous Era, and all the hardcore hobbyists and inventors go there. It's dusty, like a maze, and jam-packed with every imaginable bizarre old (and new) electronics part. If you want a tube to fix your 1938 shortwave radio, -- go to Al Lasher's. Missing a component from your Heathkit build-a-computer? Al Lasher's. Inventing a Time Machine Orgasmatron? Al Lashers.

Still owned by the same family that founded it, and they're grumpy, dissheveled -- and they know their shit cold. Supplying the unkempt tinkerers of the Bay Area for 60 years will make you an encyclopedia.

Anyway, fuckin' Radio Shack saw Al Lasher's and said to themselves, "Ooooh, a mom-and-pop business we can drive into bankruptcy and steal their customer base!" So Radio Shack opened a new outlet just one block away down the street from Al Lasher's. Direct attempt to steal away customers.

Guess what happened? FAIL.

First of all, the new Radio Shack still was stocked solely with their ridiculously limited and insultingly useless merchandise, just like every other Radio Shack.

Secondly, despite having the "economy of scale," every single thing that Radio Shack sold, Al's Lasher's had cheaper. Plus, you could buy it individually at Al's and not in a purposely gouging overpriced 6-pack at Radio Shack.

End Result after five years of trying to wait out Al's?

Radio Shack Corp. just announced that that branch was going to be shut down. Because it was losing money.

And it was true -- the few times I walked by, it was always deserted.

So suck it, Radio Shack! Mom and pop FTW!

405 I remember when I was a kid, Radio Shack had a sort of affiliate system. The reason I remember this is because there was a guy that lived out in the county who, as a part of his bustling entrepreneurial empire, was an RS affiliate of some type. His little TV, Appliance, and Lawnmower Repair shop also carried a fairly decent range of the more commonly needed items that RS actually carried back in the day. If didn't have it, he'd order it and have it the next day, delivered from the actual RS retail store 30 miles away.

Alas, sometime in the early 90s RS told him his services were no longer needed.

Hogs. If it hadn't been for those 5 players, the team would have been a 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 team. This is a team that traded a starting QB for a left tackle that anchored the line for 7 more years. Now they trade 3 first round picks for a toothpick legged qb that doesn't understand how a pocket works, has zero field presence, and zero escapability.

Rypien had that season, and then he kind of disappeared several years later.

This is a franchise that didn't sign Trent Green before he left for St Louis, and thought Jeff George would be a great franchise QB. Jeff George.

A city I live near, Cerritos, actually put a law on its books around 1978 that signs *cannot* have poor grammar on them. Their Toys R Us store opened in 1972.

-"The Giants Win The Pennant! The Giants Win The Pennant!"... was "The Shot Heard 'Round the World". It was "The Call".

...it came against the Cleveland Indians.

-John Elway drove 98 yards in just over a minute to lead the Broncos over the Browns in the 1986 AFC Championship Game. (Against the #1 Defense in the NFL.)

-Earnest Byner fumbled on the One-Yard line when the Browns were about to take the lead against Denver in the 1987 AFC Championship Game.

-Michael Jordan hit a shot from twenty feet-out to defeat the Cavaliers in 1989 to send the Bulls to the NBA Championship.

-The upstart Florida Marlins took the Indians to seven games during the 1997 season. A fledgeling shortstop barreled a nasty pitch, back up-the-middle; just over the outstretched glove of an excellent-fielding, Cy Young contending Starter for the win.

I have not even touched THEE Ohio State Buckeyes and their All-NFL teams' losses to inferior opponents.

PLEASE come join our "Swing-State" and vote.

We can share tales of woe.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 04, 2014 12:52 AM (39g3+)

Radio Shack started out as mainly a mail-order outfit, back in the 1950's, I think, possibly even pre-War. I think they had a retail location at their warehouse. Used to be a decent place to buy components, but they have all but completely abandoned that end of the market, now concentrating on gadgets and toys. At one point, they merged with the Tandy Leather Company, and a number of their stores became co-locates with Tandy Leather leathercraft shops.

We need men & women that are not wimps in GOPe. These fools talk but do nothing. Is it fear of being called racist?

This country was founded by men of great integrity & they fought for it with their lives.

These fools only care if they are going to be invited to elite parties & funded by CIC for next election.

It's worse than that. Here is an article pointing out that former House and Senate staffers move on to K Street lobbying firms and having their former boss now be in the majority means that they are now raking in a lot more bucks. All they care about is that the people they have access to are the ones who control the money spigots. They don't care about policy or conservative issues, only their own financial well being. These are the people who host those elite parties.

Most of your suggestions seem to be military bases on the west coast. I seriously doubt that moving the nations capital to California would improve anything. Maybe if the capitol were in the middle of the country that might help. If you want to stick to military bases, there is Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri or Fort Leavenworth in Kansas which has the additional benefit of a short commute to the federal prison.

551 I almost forgot, but NASA's new Orion manned spacecraft is scheduled for its first test flight atop a Delta IV Heavy. Liftoff is at 7:04 am EST. I forgot to set my alarm and luckily woke up early.

http://www.nasa.gov/index.html

The spacecraft is built by Lockheed Martin. The flight will only last a few hours, and will loop high above Earth in order to make a high-speed re-entry. In many ways it's similar to SpaceX's first Dragon test flight in December 2010, which was just two orbits and a splashdown.

Dunno. Besides the boat, there's also an issue with the second stage, so they're still holding.

I just heard that the flight is supposed to last 4 hours and 23 minutes, and the launch window is about 2 1/2 hours long. They want both the launch and splashdown in the Pacific to occur in daylight.

580 You have to be of a certain age to get NASA countdown delay jokes. How bad was it? You actually felt sorry for Walter Kronkite.

I've mercifully forgotten which launch it was, but "they" had called us out of class to watch, a whole junior high school with one modest TV on the auditorium stage ("All our rockets blow up," Tom Wolfe said), and when the delays got over two hours or so, they gave up and sent us back to the drudgery. Everyone felt cheated, in different ways.
