"If you look at the most credible evidence [of Michael Brown's death at the hands of a Ferguson, Mo., police officer], the lessons are really basic," [Rich] Lowry said during an appearance on Meet the Press. "Don't rob a convenience store. Don't fight with a policeman when he stops you and try to take his gun. And when he yells at you to stop, just stop."
Those comments elicited gasp from a panel that included the Washington Post's Eugene Robinson and MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. Mitchell exclaimed "Whoa, whoa" during Lowry's comments, while Robinson said his recitation of the known facts in the case was an attempt to "relitigate" Brown's death.
But luckily he's been gone from his house since August.

Some National Guardsmen patrolling the wreckage of Ferguson, Missouri came on a remarkable, and alarming, sight: black men with guns, their leader a 6'8? giant cradling an AR-15. They stood in the forecourt of a Conoco gas station, a building that rose, unmolested, like a meth addict's last solitary tooth in a micro-Hiroshima landscape of boarded-up, or, worse, looted and burned, small businesses.This was a building that did not burn, despite containing fuel enough to delight the nihilistic rioters. It wasn't just standing, it was open.
The Guard soldiers demanded that the men put their guns down, and were actually starting to cuff them, when the owner of the station emerged. Doug Merello is a second-generation owner of the station, and even though he's white, he and his shop's neighbors, just about all black, had always been friendly. They were his customers, and the neighbors were where he turned for his workers, too.
The nervous Guardsmen soon learned that the giant, Derrick "Stretch" Jordan, 37, and his armed friends were local men. They were workers and former workers at the station, and their friends, who knew Merello and just thought it would just flat be a crying shame if his station went the way of so many other small Ferguson businesses. Especially when they knew so many good people in their town, of whatever race, and knew also that the looters were mostly outsiders with a sprinkling of local ne'er-do-wells, incited by an irresponsible media that dreams of a world in flames.

The Jonestown Massacre was the first news event that I followed from beginning to end and fully understood so I've always marked it as the beginning of my political consciousness. And it's always bothered me that the people who aided Jones and were his allies in politics even as he descended into paranoia have never been held to account for it.
I prefer to call it a suicide/massacre. That places most of the blame where it belongs, on Jim Jones himself.The first relevant lesson to be learned is the danger of blindly following a charismatic leader. Jones became more deranged later on, but as his congregation grew in the 60s and 70s, he was a respected member of the San Francisco community, with connections to Democratic politicians (I'm not sure there's any other kind in San Francisco) and a strong reputation for racial equality.
The second lesson is to beware of the trust that gullible and trusting human beings can place in that charismatic leader. Jones required that people give over their lives and their assets when they became followers-a danger sign. Members had varied reasons for joining, but it can probably be safely said that most of them were exceedingly idealistic. According to the testimony of many of the survivors (a small group, but an articulate one), once they realized the true character of the man in whom they'd placed such hope and faith, it was too late.
...Another lesson is how connected many on the Left were to Jones' movement. Angela Davis and Huey Newton were involved, for example, in the rehearsals for suicide:
'[Jones] set up a false sniper attack upon himself and begin his first series of White Nights, called the "Six Day Siege", where Jones spoke to Temple members about attacks from outsiders and had them surround Jonestown with guns and machetes. The fiery rallies took an almost surreal tone as Angela Davis and Huey Newton communicated via radio-telephone to the Jonestown crowd, urging them to hold strong against the "conspiracy."'

And then, all of a sudden, there were a series of denunciations of all the "racist" Star Wars fans who freaked out because a black dude was wearing a Stormtrooper costume. This Mashable post is representative of the genre. But there's something odd about this so-called controversy. All of the people writing about it just kind of take for granted that there's some hardcore contingent of Star Wars fans who are writing that the series is ruined because a black dude is playing a stormtrooper. It's just assumed that this is true.But . is it? I mean, sure, I bet someone somewhere on the Internet is ranting about minorities taking the jobs of, um, Maori clones, because the Internet is a large and terrible place filled with any number of terrible (and probably large) people. That being said, if you search Twitter for "black stormtrooper," you'll find 1,291,074* tweets decrying the super duper racist people who are super duper butthurt about a black stormtrooper, and roughly zero** tweets from people are actually upset about the fact that a black dude was in a stormtrooper costume.*** Go back and read that Mashable post. You know what's fascinating about it? There're exactly zero pieces of evidence backing up the belief that there's any "black stormtrooper criticism."
What we have here is a prime example of a fascinating Internet phenomenon: the preemptive denunciation of a controversy that doesn't exist.
Apparently it's a real thing.

Danish Parents to Save Schools Through Sex
Parents in the northwestern Jutland town of Thy have pledged to get busy between the sheets in order to save the community's daycare institutions and schools.As part of a deal brokered between Thisted Council and area parents, the municipality has agreed to keep area institutions alive for the next four years. In turn, parents are promising to create new children to fill the institutions.
The daycares and schools face falling enrollment numbers and a municipal analysis suggested that the institutions be closed and merged with others in the area. But local politicians had a hard time accepting that and went to parents with a plea to be fruitful and multiply.

There is no such thing as anti-state Marxism. The very essence of the ideology is the centralization of economic decision-making in a collectively controlled state apparatus. Without state power, there can't be the compulsion necessary to force people into giving up individual ownership or ambition. And if people are allowed to "opt out" of the collectivist system, it collapses as a concept. So Marxism cannot exist without a state government.

And this is the reality of what happened to Detroit. White flight ended a long time ago. What Detroit has been experiencing for a couple of decades is middle class and working class black flight. A large proportion of the people left are welfare people and public employees. The suburbs are full of fully employed, often college educated, African Americans.

Actually, there is a bit of Marxist twaddle that says that the Dictatorship of the Proletariat is only a temporary phase, until enough people are re-educated to live freely in cooperative, sharing community. Although it's in the literature, nobody has ever gotten to that stage.....possibly because, as Hayek noted, centrally planned economies generally fail due to the necessary information to succeed being distributed throughout the society. Accordingly, the more they centralize, the more they must exert themselves just to stay fed -- and that grand re-education just gets further and further away. Sort of like the old saying "the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get."
It should be noted that the same phenomenon can be observed in the US at present.

Like that's not the problem here ma'am. The problem is that a bunch of privileged women threw their weight around and "punished" some man who managed to be talented and smart enough to get to where he was not because some woman was deprived of the opportunity to involve herself with any of the STEM fields.
In fact looking at the statistics, the people who need help the most are the men as they are less and less getting into college, there's less special funding for them and they have virulent hormonal problems that women seem to have less difficulty with during the time when they need to be concentrating on their future.
It's not the girls that are the problem it's the boys. Yet where does the money go? To helping the girls of course. Let the boys take care of themselves. It's the patriarchy ya know.

The "anarachists" are just "anarcho-socialists" who are end stage socialists. They believe that private property* is was makes people evil, and if we abolish that and manage everything by consensus, then all people will naturally come to the "correct" conclusion. In other words, they expect everyone to think and decide how they want to think.

My uncle, who was one of the last holdouts, barely managed to sell his lovely two story brick home, in which he raised four kids while working at a Ford plant, for $7,000 in the early 2000s. Homes can be bought at city auctions for tax owed only, sometimes in the $1,000 range.

A local grocery story has a regular visit from a lady with 2 huge "service animal" poodles that obstruct every aisle and annoy every other patron of the store. I have yet to observe them providing any "service."

It may finally be changing due to economic dyamics, travel, etc., but one interesting thing about South American Euro immigrant communities was that many of them kept their native languages alive for several generations, unlike the assmilationist experience in the US. So back in the 1980s I found myself at parties in southern Brazil where the German-speaking Chilean visitors were yapping in krautish with the local German descendants (all of these younger people).
I believe in WWII, when the US "rented" Brazil to be part of the Allies ($$$$ and steel plants to strongman Getulio Vargas to put aside his country's pro-Axis skew and allow US bases and provide some infantry for the Italian campaign), Brazil had a sort of awkward moment when it was realized that the two primary Axis languages (German and Italian) were still the K-12 language of instruction in many areas of the south. Oops. So only then was Portuguese mandated, nationally, as primary educational language.
Of course the largest (by far) Japanese emigre community was already long thriving in Sao Paulo, but there wasn't much bother about them.

They used to do this for people who worked for corporations that did defense contracts. My dad was a tinsmith and worked in a factory that made aeronautical stuff. There were different levels of security in some of the areas of the plant. Because he did ductwork he would go into areas that required a higher security clearance. In those days they had big mainframe computers that required ductwork for cooling.

What's weird is that the (peaceful, nondistruptive) Ferguson protesters have half a point: after all of the Brown/Wilson bullshit, it's going to be next to impossible to police Ferguson effectively. And we've all talked ourselves here at AOS about the hyper-'us-vs-them', militarized culture that police seem to have these days.
I personally would very much welcome a full investigation into the culture of the Ferguson PD, including its Chief.. Are the protesters right, and most of the cops are white and not from the area? Bloody unlikely, but it's also very possible its Chiefs are fostering a destructive and confrontational attitude for cops on the beat.
Notice that here in LA, although things have hardly been idyllic, there's been a lot less violence. Isn't it possible that has something to do with LAPD trying to foster a more constructive relationship with poor communities here in SoCal? Or do I just sound like another soft-brained liberal who doesn't think the poor non-whites should be held accountable for their actions? I don't know.
I just can't shake the hunch: Ferguson is partially the result of the militarized police forces that *we here at AOS* have even recognized are getting out of control.

It's fairly common these days for police officers to not live in the area that they work in.
Either their 'work area' is a cesspool, and they don't want to expose their families to it...or it's an area that they can't afford to live in.
Ferguson used to be a quiet, mostly white suburb of St. Louis.
Now it is mostly black.
I'm pretty sure that Ferguson would like to have more black police officers on duty there...so I suspect that the reason that they don't, is simply for lack of applicants.
As to the subject of 'militarization' of police departments...
We're seeing now why that's not such a bad idea...aren't we?
Or maybe it's better to have to call in the National Guard, and hope that they will come.

No, I think it's that LAPD and LASD took some major steps to pacify the most volatile communities.

Most of these "outrage" killings occur in election years. They may not get the black vote out in droves, but they may get out enough to make a difference in a very tight race.

My cousin's husband retired from the City police force here a couple of years ago. They chose to live in a suburb county because he hated crossing paths with people he had arrested. Grocery store, drugstore, 7-11, pizza places, everywhere. Once they moved to the county, he rarely ran across them.
It got so bad that the City started a program to give bonuses to cops that lived in the City, and they started to let them take their cruisers home.
Of course, the counties already did all of this, and the county cops chose to live in their counties because they were all pretty safe.

In Ferguson, no...I don't think the transformation came about 'naturally'.
I read something about this, a couple of months ago.
The city fathers of St. Louis exported some of their inner city problems to Ferguson, by way of Section-8 vouchers and other government programs.
This was in vogue 20 - 25 years ago, when cities were looking to "reinvigorate" their downtown areas.
It's like these city council people all attended the same seminar on it, or something.
They tried to do the same thing in Oklahoma City too, at about that time.
But the people in my small, quietarea, stood up to them and protested.
They found other areas to transplant their inner city 'problems'.

From a previous comment, apparently ferguson was mostly white, then the demographics changed ... and there might be some sort of "gentrification" program and payouts (elsewhere) that are involved.
When did Ferguson change?
How was it caused?
If this is recent, say within the last 10 years, then getting qualified black candidates for the PD might have been, and still be, virtually impossible.
As for the City Council, again, if the change is recent, there may have been no interest in "change" ... the FSA has been getting its FS, and only now (and if there was relocation money paid, it might be gone now) are beginning to care about who is on the City Council.

He and I went to high school together, and he pulled out the school yearbook and half the guys we played sports with were either in prison or just got out and were on their way back.

The only reason that we have even heard of the place is ginned-up outrage put forth through a malign media. Why assume that there's a "there" there at all? Why not let the city return to its previous obscurity? Why not let them work out their own problems with their own processes?
I see no benefit to nationalizing or Federalizing any of Ferguson's local problems. Now I happen to know that they have a great big non-local problem -- in that there are gangs of protesters and provocateurs (including the media) roaming their streets. And certainly, they keep chirping along about anything at all to keep the focus off of "WTF are all these non-locals doing in some little random city of 20,000 people?"

The reason I'm talking about nationalizing a local problem is because I read the above as advocating a Federal investigation. I happen to disagree.
On the other hand, there is clearly a non-local problem of a bunch of Grievance Party members and the media trying to inflame the situation. They've pointed at "Brown was an innocent" -- and everybody looked, and, surprise surprise! He was a thug. They pointed at "hands-up" -- and everybody looked, and forensics doesn't support that. They pointed at "harmless" -- and everybody looked, and the video with the shopkeeper blew that. And they're pointing at the whiteness of the city council and police department.
At some point, can we stop looking wherever they point and get to the real question -- what the hell are those assholes doing in Ferguson? The answer is clearly "trying to stir up trouble", but the spotlight shouldn't be pointing at anything else. It should be staying right where the problem is.

I just suspect there were some structural issues in Ferguson that led to the current racial situation over and above whatever outside activists may have brought in. There's no easy way fix them from the outside but we should be able to acknowledge that some of the complaints by locals might be legitimate.
At some point, can we stop looking wherever they point and get to the real question -- what the hell are those assholes doing in Ferguson? The answer is clearly "trying to stir up trouble", but the spotlight shouldn't be pointing at anything else. It should be staying right where the problem is.
Um no. We're smart people - we can talk about multiple things at the same time.
And who's demanding we shift the spotlight to something else? There's a big difference between just discussing and considering something versus making it the new central focus of Rightwing punditry, no?
You seem very focused on outside agitators but my point is that Ferguson was probably politically/racially troubled before anyone else ever even heard of Ferguson. And that some of the locals' complaints may not be entirely bogus.

Ferguson's problem was apathy and block voting.
It's hard to argue that there was some conspiracy to have non consensual rule when everyone involved in "the problem" was democrat.
There seems to be a national, systemic belief brewing that law can only be just for blacks when it is enforced by blacks....

We're already soaking in it.
The media is a LOT more "concerned" with the "gentle giant" than the Utah shoot where a white perp was gunned down by a black cop in a clean shoot or the Detroit case where a Black teen was killed by a black cop in a less clean shoot.
Are those cases less indicative of structural issues, or were they less likely to whip Democrat passions in the desired direction?

Yes - none of the other case had the same demographic/racial pressures that were present in Ferguson. Because of the demographic imbalance between residents and police and government officials Ferguson was primed for almost any police shooting to become a racial cause celebre.

What the hell does LE's point of origin have to do with anything?
In 1980s Miami most of the cops were from out of town as well....
Shit happens, is the racial make up of LE so vital that perps get "3 free assaults" against cops that "are not looking like my son had I had a son?"
We tried to put quotas away in the 90s so qualifications were king.
Obviously the state should start paying blacks as much money as it takes to lure them into LE and if need be concurrently lower the moral background and criminal checks.....
I'm a lot more worried about community's utilization of paranoia to try to justify its members flouting of the law than I am of enabling Eric "my people" Holder of getting to play race detective again...

It seems to me the jackass in the living room is the multi-million dollar in arrears to the Feds race hustler who makes every white on black shoot a cause regardless of facts.
If a grand jury witness turns out to have been executed as was alleged it's at least as important as the paint scheme of Ferguson PD.

Here's local reporting of the incident...
turns out homeless drunk white guy caught "on body camera" not complying with "non-white" cop's orders can be gunned down and "no harm no foul"...
now frankly I think the Utah guy committed suicide by cop but I also think the "non-white" cop made a clean shoot....
Question for the media is "the gentle giant" also "non-white" or is the name of the game here that even when they are the ones with the gun and the badge the blacks can never be an oppressor or wrong so the cop lost his race?

The argument Sharpton Inc seems to be slinging is that laws and law enforcement can only be just when the racial demographics are honored IF those demographics are African-American b/c I am willing to bet Slim Shady would not be so hot to trot to argue Blacks are over-represented in places like New Llano Louisiana (5 officers 2 black IIRC Blacks being ~39% of the population so we need to hire a mullato for that second African-American's job)?
Even slate argues this is a non-starter and at the end of the day "cops are blue"...

The ethnicity of a department is a lot less important than its professional conduct and responsiveness to community oversight.

I thanked him for his restraint, I guess I should have gainsayed his use of ANY force?
We live in an insane asylum where a large % of the population thinks their skin is a get out of jail free card.

It isn't clear when the bulk of the movie is set. Much of the original cast has been brought back to play their characters in their dotage but that isn't necessarily the era for most of the movie. But in any case it's seems likely it will be set after the overthrow of the Empire. You'd think they get rid of the storm trooper armor and replace it with something else just for PR purposes but the galaxy seems a much poorer place after two decades of Empire rule. Perhaps they can't afford to produce new armor and the New Republic cops have to wear something.

Thing to remember about these new movies: The books, other than novelizations of the movies, are meaningless. If JJ Abrams decided the Empire curled up and died overnight without Palpatine, that is the new normal.
Also, it's like claiming the roman Empire kept going for centuries just because there was an entity that called itself Roman. Occasionally multiple such entities, all claiming to be the One True.
