So Uncomfortable

In Britain, a dispute about a minor ticket features threats and lots of use of the c-word (profanity warning).

CNN immediately dubbed the angry man "a gentle giant with kind words for all."

5 I use the c-word canoderous. It's a made up word that means a difficulty involving my ballzack. Like this- I got snagged crossing that fence in a most canoderous way.

7 In Britain and Australia, the c-bomb isn't nearly as harsh.

8 Business Roundtable members are due to meet Obama in a closed-door session on Tuesday, where they may air their concerns.

It is not clear how many members of the group, whose companies sponsor health insurance for 40 million people, are considering any action. It is also not clear if the White House can stop the EEOC from challenging wellness programs.

A threat of a corporate backlash comes at a time when Obama faces criticism even from his Democrats' ranks that he had devoted too much political capital to healthcare reform.

9 The c-word is used differently in Britain, IIRC - it doesn't carry the same shock value there that it does here.

I can't believe the amount of restraint this guy is showing, it's purely because he knows he's being taped.

Most of my interactions with police are this dynamic but reversed, the cop screaming at some minor infraction.

26 American Federation of Teachers, one of the largest teachers unions in the United States, passed a resolution last week to ban Coca-Cola from its facilities and events.

The teachers union stated its decision was based on human rights violations, which have been detailed in three books published several years ago.

The questions remain: why now and why is this important to a teachers union?

Because AFT is a labor organization, it will stand in solidarity with other labor organizations that have taken a stance against Coca-Cola, AFT spokesman Michael Heenan told Watchdog.org.

Coca-Cola responded to AFT's claims in an email to Watchdog.org, saying they were based on "outdated and erroneous allegations that we have repeatedly addressed."

Everybody's looking for their "N-word" these days that they can get all righteous about.

Cunt goes back to Shakespeare's time at least.

Cunt's even kinda cute sounding compared to euphemisms like "slash" "slit" "gash" etc.

But, hey, by all means get upset about a word.

Still, the word's much more ubiquitous in Britain than here. About the same as saying you're a "dick".

Oh no! A genital euphemism with a hard sound to it!

I shall now be all offended and such!!!

Glenn Reynolds correctly says chivalry was a system. It implied behavioral obligations on both men and women. We've lost chivalry, aka good manners, and that's why our society has become so coarse and vulgar.

As to unmanly vs homosexual, I think the two are usually interpreted as synonymous, at least among the sort who want to start a fight over a parking ticket.

No. A double standard means the same phenomenon or behavior is judged by different standards depending on the circumstances or individuals involved. It does necessarily have anything to do with gender. For example, one could say that the MSM coverage of politicians' scandals exhibits a double standard, depending on whether they're Democrats or Republicans. Yes?

131 Different curse words carry different levels of intensity, even if they are referring to the same thing.

There's a million words for penis. If a call some dude a tool, a dick, or a prick, they all have different meanings yet all mean the same thing.

Just as there's a difference between calling somebody a homo and fag.

The literal meaning of the curse word -- usually something genital or excrement related -- is not the actual meaning. The actual meaning is - I dislike you and look down on you. How intense that dislike is and how lowly I think you are will determine the intensity of the curse word employed.

In America the c-word is generally the worse thing you can call a woman. In Britain is much more widely used, and therefore packs less punch.

The more widely used a curse word is, the less powerful.

Fuck used to be a lot more powerful in America, Massive overuse has severely weakened it's power.

The literal meanings of curse-words are never their real meanings. Which is why foreign curse-words often sound silly and not especially insulting when you learn their literal meaning.

No. In the context of this discussion, gender differences are exactly the point. Or at least that was the subject of my comment. As you said, my point was that the standards should be different for the individuals involved. However, if the individuals involved insist on everything being treated exactly the same for them and denying that there are any differences to be considered, then they shouldn't demand special treatment. "gay" as an insult had lost almost all power as an insult before the Left decided to ban it. Calling something gay had the intensity of calling something lame.

Pretty cowardly act and deserving a good shot of pepper spray - at the least. Scaring the hell out of a poor guy for five minutes who was just doing his job and threatening him repeatedly is not legal or moral. Hope he got some jail time out of it all and faced some guys just like he - but younger!

*****

Actually, I don't think he was intimidated at all. When the old guy told him he was afraid to look him in the eye without those sunglasses on, the meter maid guy whipped those glasses off lickety split.

Second, he's a meter maid, not a cop. He has no arrest power. He just wasn't going to let the guy bait him into a fight that could get him in trouble.

But if that old guy laid a hand on him, I guarantee you that the meter maid guy would have been game.

I don't know if he would win. But he wasn't afraid.
