Overnight Open Thread (29 Nov 2014)

Well for all the doom and gloom that Al Gore preached about global warming and hurricanes, the 2014 hurricane season quietly closes tomorrow making it 9 years since the U.S. was hit by a major hurricane.

Related: Three consecutive years of record low tornado activity.

Beer Quiz

Think you know a lot about beer? Take a quiz and find out. I got an F on the quiz. Whatever. Just give me a cold beer.

This Is My Product

Ferguson

Oh oh. You know things aren't going well for the rioters when even Dennis Rodman calls them 'illogical' and isn't convinced that charges needed to be brought up on Darren Wilson.

As if you needed another reason not to send your kids to public schools. White House promotes how to teach about Brown and Ferguson.

4. Create a classroom memorial.

"During the first few weeks of classes, students can create a memorial to Michael Brown on a classroom bulletin board. This activity involves having students use whatever they feel skilled in to create something that would honor Michael Brown and other people who have been victims of police and other violence. Students may choose to draw, write poetry, design art pieces, paint, or collect news clippings. Students can use this opportunity to create a counter-narrative to negative stories and images about Ferguson and Michael Brown, or even to document stories and images they have seen in the media about the case. Engaging in this type of activity allows teachers to understand youth strengths and form classroom solidarity."

File this away in the good to know file. According to the NAACP, saying "burn this bitch down" is not a call to violence.

An SR-71 Tale

Heh. The ultimate ground speed check - tales from the Blackbird.

Gun Issue

Dear Lord, you have to be some kind of special cupcake to keep firing your gun with a round jammed in the barrel.

No kidding. Except no one has ever seen this behavior until a filmmaker doing a documentary just happened to catch a male lion stalking a group of cheetahs.

Cheetahs aren't generally considered competition. The two cats generally ignore each other. If they do cross paths, cheetahs high tail it out of there.

100 I loved that SR-71 story, even though it was Zoomiephilic.

I learned a nice little euphemism in an Osprey book on the Blackbird: the "low residue diet", i.e., one so low in fiber as to keep you gummed up during lo-o-o-ong flights.

I once asked an Air Force guy what it was like to be flight crew, and the first thing he said was "Eat lots and lots of cheese!", and described the little canvas bag used for elimination.

The more you know.. (((rainbow)))

101 Well ok that was poor wording they're well adapted to catch small, light, fast prey. And as a result they're small, light and fast themselves which makes them easily bullied. Their population must have recently went through a severe bottleneck because as species go they're pretty inbred and not genetically diverse. Compared to other big cats they're very weak. Throw in jackals and hyenas and they're pretty outcompeted by everything in their environment.

Um, wow. That is... SO not a good idea. There's a reason that schools don't usually let kids build memorials to their classmates who have, say, committed suicide. It's a great way to get kids thinking, "Hey, all this attention because so-and-so killed himself. Maybe I should kill myself, too." It appeals to the average kid's inherent arrogance and makes them feel even more important (or unimportant) than they already do. It's just not a good idea.

Gotta say, building a memorial to a dead thug who died unremarkably after trying to steal a cop's gun, and whose death has been turned into a worldwide media circus? Even WORSE of an idea.

It's the truth though. Yes, there have been destructive hurricanes, but they categorically don't qualify as "major" storms. There's a difference between a category 2 or 3 hurricane and a category 4 or 5. Depending on where or when they hit, the destruction may be worse than if they hit somewhere that gets hurricanes more frequently, but that doesn't change their classification. I mean, an F1 tornado could hit NH and wreck a lot of shit, but that wouldn't make it a major tornado.

257 Ike was basically a Cat 3 until hours before landfall. It was a huge storm. I get the point of that article was different, but my beef goes back to Hurricane Sandy. You heard a lot of news people back then state how there had not been a major hurricane since Katrina when covering Sandy. They had no clue about Cat 2/3. For all they knew a hurricane had not hit since Katrina.

There was a snowstorm in Michigan a couple of weeks ago, and a local network affiliate pre-empted one hour of afternoon television to "cover" it. There was snow and wind. Roads were bad. This is Michigan, and that kind of winter weather is very common. Not to mention that spending an hour "covering " a snowstorm, when everyone can see how bad it is just by looking out their fricking windows, makes no sense.

They also go overboard when there is a thunderstorm. They have gotten to the point where they are carrying on like hysterical ladies PMSing every time there's normal bad weather.

When he was 2 I took him in for his "well baby" checkup and they asked me if I was teaching him about guns and knives and such. I told him "Well, he's not quite strong enough to shoot the .357 with magnums, but he's hell with the throwing knives!" Oh, the look I got! I then told the doc, look around and see where you are (Kenbridge, VA; about as rural as you can get), there isn't a house from here to Richmond that doesn't have at least one gun in it. Asking dumb-ass questions like that will get you dumb-ass answers...if it gets you any answers at all, and some of these rednecks around here might just give you an ass-whippin' instead.

And I take it seriously. He's an old coot, but Black Panthers and Nation of Islam members have committed a lot of major racial violence in their history.

I have this weird thing that when people call for explicit violence against my family I take them at their word that they mean it. I don't just laugh it off. I don't say, oh, he's old and black so he should get a pass at calling for violence against random whites.

400 I worked for a Squadron Commander in my USAF days who had been a U-2 pilot, and was more than a bit friendly with the SR community.

The way he explained it was, that basically the SR's only true speed limit was the plane's skin temperature, and that yes, it could speed itself to death with throttle to spare.

So, while it's cruise was officially listed as "Mach 3+", it's sprint-speed is, as far as any of us know, a guesstimate, at best. The X-15, with it's ICONEL skin, began to melt and self-destruct at just over Mach 6. And that was only what, a six or seven minute fuel-burn on that rocket plane?

I don't think that a short duration sprint near the speed of Mach 5 would be a wild guess with the SR platform. Two or three minutes at that speed, especially with a small course change, would screw up the intercept of just about any missile made, then or now.

Now, that would have been one hell of an airspeed call to ATC!

IIRC the Phantom (proof that bricks will fly given enough thrust) was also speed limited by its skin, IE the metal would start peeling back before it ran out of thrust. Part of that is you have to slow the internal airflow down below Mach or else you'll rip the innards right out of the engine. The Tomcat had ramps in the intake that would drop and restrict the airflow, the Hornet does it through the aerodynamics of the body, IIRC the Phantom did it through aerodynamics as well but as I am not now nor was I ever a Phantom mech I couldn't say for sure.

It won't ever again be north/south. It will be rural/urban, and the urban areas won't fare as well as they envision they might. Yeah, they have more people...to feed...most of which think food comes from the grocery store, which won't be restocked because of the unrest and violence...begetting more unrest and violence...

518 Although it is a cute story, I admit stories like the one I posted about the 4-year old's love letter, tend to hit my sideways anymore these days.

I've just been burned by so many women. What really frustrates me is, I can't even get to the fucking *friend zone.* I've been told too many times, women don't even want to *know* me. It's to the point that I won't even approach them anymore, I've gotten so sick of it.

I know you all didn't come here to hear my sob stories tonight though. And I do have other things going in my life right now. Just needed to vent (again).

Excellent guess!

But -- no.

Kaffir is an Arabic word originated with with Arab slavers who enslaved the Africans along the continent'se eastern coast. The word is the same as "kafir" -- unbeliever" -- but the Arabs used it promarily to refer to the polytheistic African natives they were enslaving.

Eventually it became the standard word meaning "black person" in eastern and southern Africa.

Only in the 1950s did it take on a new derogatory offensive reputation, as it was used by the white Apartheid enforcers to refer to blacks in South Africa, and it become notorious

So -- good guess. But actually it is Arabic, so -- nope.

606 I'm sure somewhere there is a critical race theorist planning a dissertation on how this proves that Star Trek, and all its fans by extension, is racist.
Posted by: Conservative Crank

The original "Trek" was the journey the Boer colonists took inland to the veldt in covered wagons, after landing in ships at the Cape. "Trek" in that sense referred to a specific journey (or series of journeys) in the 1700s, sort of similar to how in English when we see the word "Frontier" we think of the western frontier as the US expanded westward -- even though "frontier" of course ha a generic meaning too. But to an Afrikaaner, "the Trek" basically means the overland journey to settle the nation.

Later, it just came to mean any long or arduous excursion into unknown territory.

And then -- to the stars!

And here's a VERY little-known fact that actually has major historical implications -- but it is so "inconvenient" that it is now almost completely suppressed:

When the Dutch colonists landed at the Cape and began to explore the countryside, the area was practically uninhabited. Basically no "black Africans" lived down there, as it was considered too cold. The only natives were the tribes now known as the Khoi-san, but which the Dutch called the Hottentots. But they were very small in number (and stature, actually), and only lived in a few fringey areas.

So when the Dutch/Boers were settling what is now South Africa, they weren't really "stealing" land from the locals, because there were essentially no locals. They were just building homes on virgin territory.

It was only later that Africans from the surrounding areas migrated to South Africa to take advantage of the booming economy.

To recite this once commonly known historical fact in South Africa today would probably earn you a jail term. Because it implies that the "white" South Africans are at least just as "native" to the area (if not moreso) as are the blacks. It's different than what happened in Australia and North and South America, where the arriving colonists really did have to push out the native inhabitants. Oddly, that was not really the case in South Africa.

The later but earlier prequel series 'Enterprise' made it clear that this was not a trivial job but rather a highly trained specialist position. But then a lot of time had passed in how scripts were written for TV shows. Character development is far more refined these days when you're allowed to go heavy on continuity. That used to be a no-no for anything expected to make its big money in syndication.

Actually, that is probably true in more areas than it is not. It's not like Las Vegas, NV, Fargo, ND, or Phoenix, AZ had large indigenous populations before Europeans got there....but the Europeans significantly expanded the "carrying capacity" of the region upon arrival. And when the area could support more population, they flooded it with Europeans.

Mind you, there are notable exceptions -- but even the Trail of Tears, with the forced relocation of the Five Civilized Tribes at a cost of 30% fatalities in some cases....involved moving about 46,000 people http://tinyurl.com/ynogzw . Today, that territory is probably home to millions. The Five Civilized Tribes had maybe 20,000 years when they could have inhabited it by millions without interference by Europeans and failed to do so.

639 Oh, and here's where it gets really hilarious. This is what she sent me today, printed off onto paper made from trees, delivered in fossil fuel burning trucks by carbon dioxide emitting humans, instead of just shunting some electrons my way (I had to do a Bing search to find it):

In the queue at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she
should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for
the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't
have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back
then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the
store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and
sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.
So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back
in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store
and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb
into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But
she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the
throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling
machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the
clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters,
not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't
have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief
(remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In
the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have
electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile
item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion
it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up
an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push
mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't
need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on
electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back
then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a
plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled
writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the
razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just
because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back
then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes
to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi
service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of
sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a
computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000
miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old
folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

I agree with the sentiment behind the email, but....

Maybe I've just listened to too much old music from both the Caribbean and from South Africa, but to me they don't really sound similar at all. South African mbaqanga/kwela/jive/ etc. really is totally unique.

Note that the ancestors of the blacks now in the Caribbean were originally brought there as slaves from west Africa by the French and British and Spanish -- and west Africa has a totally different culture from southern Africa. Not even closely related.

And bailing out of a relationship with an 8-month infant points to something seriously (and potentially dangerously) wrong with the ex. Some researchers are concerned that we're heading into long term CA normal, which we'd term severe drought because the 20th Century was unusually wet for the region and gave us unrealistic expectations. Before the last century, most of the population was centered on oases and deserts that offered motivation in the form of mineral resources. Supposedly there was less than 1.5 million person in the entire state in 1900, leaving questions about water usage on today's scale unasked.

Prayers to Gingy and Big.

Posted by: Infidel at November 30, 2014 03:41 AM (imR+Y)

Here's the thing. I'm old and easily confused, but it sounds like Big is doing some time with the grands to find himself, reconnect with the heritage, or whatnot -- so he's wandering around Gingy's old stomping grounds. And, face it, those stomping grounds aren't the throngs of NYC or Chicago -- he may have bumped into his sperm donor on a number of of occasions already.

So it really comes down to the risks/benefits of knowing what this guy looks like, and having him know what Big looks like. I may be reading way too much into this from so few data points, but I think Big's plan of doing a meet with conditions makes sense -- that way, he'll know what to watch out for. And it's not that the ex couldn't stake-out the grands' house and figure out what Big looks like anonymously. That makes the conditions and their guarantors very important.....e.g. it's one thing to say, "no weapons at this meet" -- but what do you have to ensure that condition besides words? A signed affidavit?

657 Yoo Hoo, guess is time for bed.

But knowing that Big is 20 and that you're on top of it is reassuring.

OTOH,
Big is the living personification of Joe Btfsplk. Just tonight, after
the ceremony for his uncle's passing, he was told to take his backpack,
in which he had his laptop and all of his clothes, along with his
grandparents duffel, which contained 3 sleeping bags and other important
stuff, out to the truck. Big promptly proceed to toss these valuable
bags into the back of God knows whos pickup. Said pickup was long gone
by the time everyone came out of the restaurant. This type of thing is
not an unusual accordance. I have become the greatest living master of
the facepalm.

Posted by: weirddave at November 30, 2014 03:47 AM (KAmzK)

On the bright side of things, if that behavior is genetically sourced from his sperm donor, there's really nothing to worry about with them meeting -- except, perhaps, tripping over shoelaces.

Posted by: cthulhu at November 30, 2014 04:02 AM (T1005)

659 It's probably not that complicated, but what to I know. The sperm donor of little Infidel is not in the picture. Although, I have a debit card for child support that gets loaded every month with $13.26.

She's 34 now.

660 You'll note @656 that I'm thinking Gingy's ex may be the Walter White of Canada.

The word you're looking for is "paranoid".

But, of course, it is a truism to say that paranoids might actually have people out to get them.

672 *sigh* I guess I left myself open for this. Uncle's death brought everybody to a small town in the arctic. When Big tossed everybody's possessions into an unknown pickup, leftard niece posted a general notice seeking to get them back. Big's biodad saw said notice and contacted Big on FB, and big accepted. Now bio-dad wants to "buy him a beer" or "have coffee". Big is cautiously willing to do so.

The offended party in this should be me, but I really don't care about biodad contacting Big. I'll put my 12 years of parenting up against his running out on an 8 month old baby any day, and twice on Saturday.

Whose devastated in this is Wife. She worked her ass off to get Big away from Biodad and into a life. She succeed, brilliantly (all humility aside, I'm an OK father). Snapshot on Biodad: He punctured a rubber with a pin so he could impregnate Wife while she would think he was being careful, to produce a child he cared nothing about supporting. To this day he owes her $50,000 in child support. That'll give you an insight into Wife's state of mind regarding him.

I trust Big to do the smart thing most times about as far as I can throw an avalanche. In this I do trust him. He KNOWS that Wife dedicated her life to him ( maybe even as far as to marry a strange man from another country just because he seemed to be stable for her kid. Huh. I NEVER thought of that before. I just thought we were destined. LMAO. It doesn't matter ( really, it doesn't, although I'll have to ask her), we're brilliant together.), and I don't believe he'll abrogate that for the allure of biodad. What allure? Guy's a loser, he's got 4 other kids in the same position as Big.

So. It's a shitstorm. The only thing I wish is that I was with Wife. She needs me there to remind her she's not hitched to a loser ( a different loser than me anyway). Facetime isn't an adequate substitute. All of us are good, decent people with good, decent lives fortified to withstand any assault from biodad (which isn't coming anyway).

Wife'll be home Monday and life can go back to normal. Hallelujah.

Thought about it a lot, but have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I need to leave him out there on his own. Biodad stuff I can confab over the phone. Real life stuff? He's GOT to get that down on his own. Here I'd only be subsidizing him.

I have no intention to tell the IRS about my insurance whether I have it or not. And, it should be noted, they can only seize refunds -- so I will be thoroughly underwithheld, because the penalty for underwithholding is significantly less than the Obamacare penalty tax.

As I alluded to above, it's more-or-less inevitable that he meet biodad....and that goes directly to the question of whether biodad is Walter White of the North or just a jerk. If Big won't end up dead or in jail, meeting the ex is merely a learning experience.
