Fundamental Concepts : The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many [Weirddave]

Last week, after the fundamental concepts thread was mostly dead, a poster came in and excoriated me for being part of the gay mafia. It seems that because I have a gay friend, and because I respect and like her and am able to discuss serious topics with her, I am a deluded fool. The poster was dismayed that s/he had to read such drivel "on a conservative blog", and furthermore...I'll just quote:

I do not care about meeting your gay friends.

I do not care to consider them as individuals, they are not worth my time. As the fanatics that protects them left and right.

You are a tribalist and decided to keep in your tribe people who are part of the problem and not of the solution. That is your problem, not mine. being called homophobes by gay supporter fanatics as you is a badge of honour.

They will throw you under the bus when they obtain all the stupid things they want (destroying religious freedom) but you are too stupid to pay attention.

If you're really interested, you can read it all at the end of last week's thread (Don't post there, I don't know how many days have to pass before the auto-banhammer kicks in for posting on an old thread).

Anyhow, as soon as this exchange occurred, I knew the topic of this weeks thread: The supremacy of the individual. This is a key difference in the way conservatives see the world versus how progs see the world.

In the leftist worldview, the individual doesn't matter except as part of a group. They are all about manipulating differing groups against each other to consolidate their hold on power. Look at any leftist movement in history and it's front and center in all of them. The French Revolution started with the people vs the aristocracy (and ended with the people vs themselves). Marx was all about the proletariat vs the bourgeois. Today's Democrats are all about pigeonholing people into one or more groups: black, gay, female, Hispanic, whatever. It doesn't matter anything about a given individual, they are slotted into one or more group identities and assumed to have a certain set of beliefs, desires and behaviors depending on which group they are in.

It's madness, of course. A prog will tell you with a straight face that the black, female child of the President of the United States is an oppressed victim (two traits assigned to the groups "black" and "woman") and should therefore be given preferential treatment over the son of an illiterate Appalachian coal miner ("white","male") when applying for college.

A conservative, on the other hand, knows that this country was founded on the primacy of the individual. If you tell me that someone is black, that tells me exactly nothing about them except that they have a higher natural resistance to sunlight than I do. Are we talking about Allen West or Michael Brown? There is a difference. Allen West is an individual who is suited to lead men into combat or to lead the country. Michael Brown excelled at getting high and robbing the Quik-E-Mart. Being black doesn't make Allen West a leader anymore than being black made Michael Brown a thug. Their individual choices and life experiences did that.

And that's the crux of it. I am a white male. Peyton Manning is a white male. If "white male" is your criteria, then I'm just as likely to lead a football team to the Super Bowl as Peyton. In real life, the chances of that happening go up just a tad if you chose him as your QB over me.

That's what you get when you treat people as individuals. Peyton Manning would likely be a lousy insurance agent. I'm a stellar one. I'm a lousy QB. He's better. Each of us got that way by making the most of our individual abilities and opportunities.

And that's how our system is supposed to work. We all share a framework of the rule of law. That's the starting point. After that, it's up to each one of us. We can go as far as our desire and ability will take us, in whatever direction we chose to go. Yes, some people will fail, and sometimes it isn't even their fault. That's why the rule of law exists, to keep us on a level playing field and prevent some people from excelling at the expense of others. If Dana fails at being a baker, it should be because of Dana's choices, not because Pat was excelling at being a serial killer.

Treating people as individuals does one thing for society as a whole: it raises the mean. Confining people into groups depresses it. Treating people as individuals results in better outcomes for a higher percentage of the population than doing otherwise. Shouldn't that be the goal of any successful society?

14 Basic demographic info actually does give you information. But it's in the form of probabilities.

If all you know about someone is that they are a Finn, then you can logically expect they are more likely to be an introvert than the average person.

As you get to know the person you might find they are the exception, of course, but it's perfectly logical to use the demographic information you have and the information it gives.

There are many traits that are associated with gender, race, ethnicity and the like. People aren't all the same. People aren't blank slates. Our phenotypes reflect our genotypes and our evolutionary history.

27 My late uncle was gay (my father's younger brother).

He did not act particularly effeminate, and did not mince around or speak with a sibilant 's'.

He was a pretty rock-ribbed Republican (like his mother), loved Reagan, and was pretty well -liked by his peers at work (who all came to his funeral).

I've at times worked with a bunch of gay men (at a Department store many years ago), and some were weird, some were funny, some were ok and tried to do their jobs as well as possible.

My parents knew the store manager, and he was a pretty manly man. I was always impressed (when I saw him) deal with some of the odder gay men, because he always treated them with respect as his employees (this was about 37 years ago).

You treat people like shit and it's no surprise that they will not like you, either.

30 I was raised in Columbia, MD, from age 8-adulthood. WeirdDave and some of you mid-Atlantic folks probably know it well.

There are a lot of negatives about the place, but one thing that was awesome - and the reason my parents moved us there, despite the fact that it meant Dad had a horrible commute into DC as a result - is because it was a truly integrated place, racially and socio-economically. You could not tell based on someone's skin color if their dad was a doctor or a plumber.

That's how I was raised and that's how I approach my fellow Americans.

The only thing that has made that a harder way to live is this open borders stuff. It is harder to not jump to conclusions about people from Mexico. I regret that and I fight it every day.

33 If you meet someone and all you know is they are white -- then odds are they vote Republican, since most whites are now Republicans. As you get more information, your probabilities change. If they are male, the odds increase, if they are female they decrease. If they are 20-something and unmarried, now odds are they support Democrats.

If you meet a black person, odds are 90%+ they are a Democrat. As you learn more about them, you might find out they are an Allen West type. That's a quite low probability.

But demographic info contains good probability information. Middle-aged white guy who served in the military and is an NRA member --- extremely high odds he's a Republican. But there are some white guys that fit that demo who are flaming socialists. It happens.

As you get more information, your probabilities update. Some info is highly predictive, others less so.

Basic demographic data is actually pretty predictive of voting patterns. Increasingly so, in fact. Gimme a few facts like age, race, gender, marital status, and zip code and I can accurately predict how most people will vote without ever meeting them. I can probably do a decent job at predicting their favorite TV shows, too.

35 weirddave, first off I hope Gingy has a nice trip back and your extended family finds some peace.

Second, the comment you quoted (attacking you) is just boorish and silly, and obviously unjustified.

Third, I thinkmany people who are utterlyuninterested in gay issues overall - no revulsion, no sympathy beyond the normal human kind, no religious or social engineering or public health or anything sort of particular interest - naturally and justifiably find the lynch mob phenomena associated with the campaign for marriage redefinition (that guy from the tech company,Prop 8 donor attacks, etc.) repulsive and utterly un-American.

Fourth, those same peoplemay well be appalled at the way the judiciary has beenmisused, yet again, to legislate and control society, in this case the marriage redefinition issue. Obviously this is just thenth case thereof. Butsince it is not some critical policy or constitutional issue, but in fact a basic cultural and civilizational one, the offense is substantial. The arrogance (and mediocrity)the judiciary has displayed in this instance (check out Kennedy's bizarre, hateful, unhinged rant) sort of makes their marriage redefinition absurdities the cherry on top for those literate enough to recall that our system was not designed so that a few unimpressive people in robes could rule over society like Bokassa I.

44 A point to consider is that part of the reason the Left is so successful is that they use these group identities very, very well.

You can see this in left and rightwing message boards for example. We are philosophy, morality, history, etc. They argue about tactics.

Yes this means conservatism is a much more robust ideology - but if one "looks at the scoreboard" that isn't doing us a lot of good.

I know that's how Columbia was designed, but what's interesting is that it has self segregated to some extent since then. And that's OK, if it is the individual's choice, people are more comfortable around other people who are "like" them, for any given value of like.

The point is that self segregation is completely in line with what I've said above, and it isn't a bad thing as long as long as it's voluntary. If the residents of Oakland Mills start pressuring someone of race X to move to Kings Contrivance because that's where all the Xs live, then it is no longer a matter of personal choice. That person is being grouped and told that his options are now limited because he belongs to a specific group. That's anathema to the idea of individual freedom.

60 Story time for the Horde!

A few years ago, I took a sociology class (don't judge me, it was required) and during that class, the discussion turned to stereotyping. I listened to the professor for a few minutes, then said something along these lines:

'Stereotyping is a survival mechanism. When you're walking along and someone approaches you, you don't have time to get to know them. You don't have time to figure out if that person, as an individual, is a threat to your life. So, you take the first three or four most visible traits of that person, and extrapolate a series of conclusions based on prior knowledge of those traits. And usually, that will give you a pretty good idea if your life is in danger at that moment.'

Everyone in that class looked at me like I had three heads. The teacher didn't really say much, just went on with the lecture as if I hadn't spoken. A the time, I wasn't less politically and philosophically astute than I am now, so I didn't follow my comment through to its logical conclusions, which is that, for liberals and assorted fascists, they stop at the stereotype. Once they realize that their life is not in danger from the person on the street, they don't bother to find out anything more. Intelligent people, OTOH, take the time to talk to the person, and make sure that he/she is not a threat. Then they can go on with their lives, or find some common ground with the stranger.

The tl;dr version of that book I just wrote is that liberal tend to treat people as if they have no value as individuals. Conservatives tend to look deeper.

But seriously, I'm kinda there myself. I have a friend who I believe is in a relationship with another woman, but we don't talk about it. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's a sexual relationship or not, because, as I said, we don't talk about it.

We are very very close in so many ways, and I know she has more or less sworn off men because of previous abuse, but I think we're doing some odd sort of dance right now, where if she ever decides to take a chance again, I think we could make a go of it.

Or not. At this point in my life it doesn't really matter. I mean, it does, but I'm perfectly content being single.

i have a ghey uncle who is in his 70's, who never "officially" came out of the closet and who is now living in a rest home with late stage dementia....i don't like him.....not for his dementia....but for how he lived his life hurting other people...especially my mom. he was a grifter and he kept it well hidden until he lost his faculties and everything became exposed about 5 years ago when my sister took over his conservatorship ....

when i worked in a bank....most all of the men that worked there were ghey....a very close friend of mine died of aids in the early 90's....while i never pretended with them that i agreed with their lifestyle, i love them as i love any of my straight friends. i have a good friend that is a lesbian.....i love her....i love her wife....again i don't agree with their life choice but i love them....they are lovable.....i love my husbands step brother who is ghey and married....he and his husband are two of the nicest men and genuinely good people i have ever met in my life....and when i think of my favorite people in my life, they always make the cut....

gheys are people just like us.....i don't have to agree with their life style i don't have to like them as individuals the same way i don't have to like straight people as individuals...i can't pick and choose in my life who i like and who i don't like....and it has nothing to do with who they choose to love......

65 Dave, to focus a bit on some components of the issues you raised.

The "gay mafia" is a harsh and deserved term for a real, and unusual, phenomenon - the extraordinary control that certain mindsets have in the areas of culture and entertainment. Mindset, not actual sexual orientation, actually. The relentless, and at times ridiculous, heavy-handed propagandizing of one group's sensibilities or ideas in education, movies, TV, etc.

Note: this is an example of a broader issue. Think of the amazing and absurd prevalence of "fictional" constructs in entertainment where private business, big business, the US, the US military, white males, etc. are demonized and almost ALWAYS the villainous element. It's been going on for decades, and the impact is quite real and pernicious. The gay thing is just the latest addition to that trend, and (appropriately?) has been rather histrionic (making classic comic characters gay, for example).

I hate the term "tolerance", because it implies there is something to be tolerated, in a negative sense. Anyway, my "tolerance" is omnidirectional. Meaning I'm not going to treat someone differently if they're gay, nor if they're someone uneasy with gay-ness due to fundamental religious belief. They'll get treated as individuals by me, always.

I'm an anti-tribalist (have been using the term and concept since before the web existed based on direct observation at the highest levels), and in that sense a good American, in the sense of the America that exists less and less any more. Note how "tolerance" and un-American group ID politics/cultural tactics rise in parallel .....

Short and sweet.

Now, back to making pizza (yeah, I know, AFTER a big ole Thanksgiving dinner feast). I was in the mood. Just going with a quick cheese-only. I had one more container of my homemade pizza sauce in the freezer, mozzarella in the fridge, and a bread machine that make pizza dough in 45 minutes. A sprinkle of Parmigiano-Reggiano and hot pepper flakes, a splash of olive oil. Good to go.

My husband's not complaining.

This is a good point. Groups are easier to herd, individuals not so much. When in an aggrieved group you look outward for a villain, when not in a group you must look inward to find fault.

From a management perspective the democrats have the upper hand because of their grouping model. Republicans are always going to have a difficult time gaining new members if they don't blame some other out-group for the unlucky cards of life.

What to do then? Well, one group I belong to is the 'very-fcuking-tired-of-paying-taxes-so-others-can-get-free-shit'. There's a group the republicans should be talking to...

76 Of Brains and College Degrees:

As for the case where an attorney was handed a brain in a bucket, a Kansas widow who wanted to know the cause of her husband's dementia sued Parcells after he told her he would remove her husband's brain from his body and send it to Harvard Medical School for analysis.

The widow, Judy Walker, said she paid Parcells $1,250 in 2011 but never received a report from Harvard. Her lawyer, Michael Hodges, said about three years later -- after the lawsuit was filed -- she received a report from a doctor in New York.

Hodges said he's not sure if the brain in the bucket belongs to Walker's late husband, Michael Doris, or if it's even a brain at all.

"Plaintiff now believes that her husband's brain has been lost or destroyed," according to the complaint.

Parcells says that's why he brought Walker's late husband's brain to the deposition. And if she ever wants it, he says, it's in his lab in Topeka, safe and secure.

Progressivism has long sought to supplant traditional morality and long established social conventions with their "scientific" replacements. Whether the gay rights movement are fellow travelers or simply dupes, large segments seem to have embraced the radicalism. Gay marriage for them isn't about Willie and Joe being able to have certain legal rights, it's about undermining straight marriages undermining anything that could challenge the state's new morality.

Precisely. I've been wondering a little if there's something in people's personalities that drives them to be more liberal or conservative, aside from their experiences. Maybe it's just because I'm an introvert, but I think introversion- in the sense of not needing much social interaction- is more compatible with conservatism. Extroversion- needing social interaction- seems to be a more liberal mindset. And it makes them easier to control, because extroverts don't want to be kicked out of the herd, so the threat of ostracism is enough to make them toe the line.
Anybody else have similar thoughts, or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

There is a difference in the Democrat demographics though.

Single women, blacks, and academia for example are part of the movement for the monetary handouts. The left has convinced them that their financial success is dependent on looting the middle class, or as the left calls it "the 1%".

The "gay mafia", environmentalists, and the idle rich want to destroy our society as it has existed until this point.

101 One of the confusions the left gets into is the idea that individualism necessarily precludes society or cooperation. They make an idiot caricature of what they disagree with, then attack that, getting straw all over the place.

For example, the rugged individual who settled the old west relied on goods he could buy from other individuals, and a social contract by which he gained from the culture by surrendering small non-critical parts of the expression of his liberty.

The leftist reads this and says "see? see? collectivism! Not individual!" as one dunce above posted.

The point they miss is that collectivism sees people as groups rather than separate people, and judges them based on their identity group rather than each person as they are separate from others. The farmer working in is field is just that man, not "white farmer." Collective vs individual isn't one vs many, its individual vs arbitrary groups imposed by commissars.

122 ...Precisely. Posted by: right wing whippersnapper

I would agree with this. As everyone knows here liberals approach solutions to complex problems with their emotions, how they feel for the aggrieved. Conservatives prefer the hard science of human behavior and personal responsibility.

As humans we tend to avoid pain, and liberals would rather not look inward at their own faults as much as look at others and point. Conservatives don't blame the world on others, and so aren't looking for compensation for their lot in life.

They remain stuck in a childish position which I suppose Freud would call "ego-driven" in which everything is reduced to desires and wills rather than truths and reality.

129 I think the Left has been, over the years, somewhat schizophrenic on individual vs. group rights. They have been adamant about the individual's rights to ignore public social standards on some issue of the moment -- social standards which allow wildly differing individuals to coexist peacefully. This kind of destruction tends to affect children negatively first.

Then, when the consequences of their destruction start to affect them personally in negative ways, they replace the standards they have destroyed with laws and rules. See the excesses and irrationalities of: "Yes means Yes".

Dennis Prager has for many years made a distinction between reasonable public standards for behavior in a polite society and standards for behavior in private, where he believes wide latitude should be given.

Posted by: KT at November 29, 2014 12:28 PM (qahv/)

130 I think it is a profound mis-understanding of the Progressive Left to think they want the country to be a "disaster". They already THINK it's a disaster and want to fix it. It's correct, that they want to destroy all the old norms and replace them with their new and improved ideas.
They want to re-enact the French Revolution, except for the part where they consume each other, and then a fascist dictator comes along that mouths all their platitudes and leads them to wars of conquest and is eventually defeated. Because they are all scientific and read books and stuff.

It's not so much a conscious will to destroy for most of them, but it is a death wish. They do, in part, want bad things to happen to expell their unearned guilt for things they didn't do and feel guilty about.

159 The problem most people have is that they fall for the "nice guy" syndrome. Its what infuriated the left when Oliver North testified, its what fools people into thinking maybe a serial killer isn't guilty: they seem so nice.

Without contact with homosexuals, or being aware who is one, people get all sorts of images and concepts in their mind what one is like, then when they meet one they find out "well this guy is just like you or I!" as if somehow being homosexual makes you inhuman or mutant.

Being a nice guy doesn't make you right though. Being a nice guy doesn't make what you're doing okay. Being a nice guy doesn't justify your behavior or sanctify your actions. It just means that we're complex creatures that have different facets, and sometimes the monster is the good guy, sometimes the good seeming guy is the monster.

And that's the essence of individual vs collective: it what you do that matters, not what you seem to be.

161 It IS possible to make temporary judgments about people because of superficial markers.

Depending on the circumstances, those judgments might cause you to make decisions that could save your life or put you in a bad position.

Making any decision based solely on superficial markers can lead to bad results. Wrongly judging those superficial markers due to bad information can lead to bad results.

Constantly making bad decisions based on bad jugments will lead to a lot of trouble for those that do so.

It's back to an old aphorism borrowed from computers; Garbage In, Garbage Out.

And our judgments are partly the result of our own experiences and experiences of others that we respect.

We also tend to try to socially shame those who draw different conclusions than ours which may or may not be a good thing.

Right now some very cockeyed perceptions are floating around out there that are very incorrect or unfounded in reality.

Which is why the facts of a situation and the truth are so necessary to making accurate assessments.

Yet Accademe and the InfoTainment Industry seem to be determined to force as many people as possible into believing and retaining bad information.

Until the truth is known and becomes widespread knowledge, lies will abound and chaos will rule.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, the agency had processed more than 94,000 transactions, on pace to surpass last year's 144,758, Fischer said

196 What the left also does very well is stay on message. Virtually every leftists believes that high taxes are good, guns are bad, SSM is good, drugs should be legal, military is bad.

On the other hand, the right is a mix of people. Most people believe in most of the same things on the right. But there are many more people on the right who stray off the "conservative plantation". I'm a good example. I'm all for less govt, low taxes, build the dang fence, etc. But I'm also fine with SSM and abortion.

So you have a lot less intra-party fighting on the left than on the right, which keeps the left a lot more unified.

And this goes back to the original post where it's about group think vs. individuals.

That was Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, but really, I think the same was perhaps true of Barrie. In the sense that he spent an awful lot of his time with kids (mostly boys, I think), and if he wasn't having sex with them, I think we can place it along a spectrum of showing too much attention to children, all the way up to actual physical sexual contact.

213 The nation is loaded with phone-wielding terrorists. But thanks to the swift corrective action applied by a former Secret Service agent and the multi-billion dollar agency, guests at the Drury Park Plaza Hotel in Chesterfield, Missouri, are safe from the terrorist activity of 28-year-old US Navy veteran (and now, former hotel Houseman) Mark Paffrath.

Mark says that on Thursday after work he snapped 2 photographs and a short video of several dozen Homeland Security vehicles in the parking garage. He then uploaded them to his Facebook page. In his post he writes "why are all the cop cars here...I wonder if it has anything to do with Ferguson", he also included the hashtags #Ferguson #NoJusticeNoPeace.

Hooray for the First Amendment! ... oh, wait.

On Friday, shortly after arriving to work at the Drury Plaza Hotel, Mark stated that he was called to the office of Jeff Baker, the General Manager. Upon arriving Mr. Baker advised Mark that he needed to remove the photos and video from Facebook. Mark immediately complied and removed the post. Mark then continued and finished his shift.

A private company decides to insert itself into a situation where no one -- not even the DHS -- needed to step in. Having achieved its goal of suppression, one would think the story ends here. But it doesn't.

Saturday, Mark stated after being at work no more than 30 minutes, he was again called to the General Manager's office. Waiting for him was Jim Bohnert, Director of Security for Drury Hotels Company, LLC. Mark told ASN that Mr. Bohnert advised him that his Facebook posts almost cost the company a $150,000 contract with the Department of Homeland Security and because of this he was being terminated.

Jim Bohnert -- formerly of the Secret Service and the St. Louis Police Department -- had more to say on the matter. He called the former military member a "terrorist" and told him he had "dishonorably served his country" by posting pictures of vehicles parked in a garage where any guest or employee of the hotel could have seen them. In fact, any member of the public could have seen them simply by entering the garage, which is not secured. Argus Streaming News writers were able to see "over 100" DHS vehicles in the garage while driving through it on their way to speak to the hotel's manager.

227 List of gay peeps I've known well over the years.

My neighbors: This was about 10 years ago, long before there was SSM. They had been together for years, bought a house together. One was a school princial (OMG!!) and the other one a lawyer. I didn't know them super well, but they were neighborly, we said high to each other, when we went on vacation, they picked up our mail, and vice versa. They had 2 dogs, we babysat their dogs a few times when they went away for the weekend. Just a regular couple really.

My wife's cousin. He's married. They have 2 adopted kids. My wife's family kind of disowned him when he came out. Over time, they've come around and now he's part of the family like anyone else and his husband is as well.

Co-worker for a year or so. Biggest asshole I've ever known. Nothing about him being gay per se made him an asshole, he was just a not nice human being.

Guy in high school. This was in the early 90s when being gay was about as popular as being a leper. I always thought fuck this guy's brave for coming out. As far as I know, he never got any real flak for coming out, nobody beat him up or anything. Then again it was a small private school, where a) you'd be kicked out of school in a second if you pulled any shit like that and b) because it was small, everyone knew everyone very well and you'd be looked upon as quite an asshole if you abused a kid because he was gay.

And it's having had those interactions with gays over many years that I don't freak out over 2 dudes getting married. There are nice gay people, there are asshole gay people. But they're just people at the end of the day.

229 I suspect without a shred of evidence of scientific support that a good bulk of lesbians, probably the majority, are not that way out of absolute nature but because they are mad at guys, hurt by them at some point, or are just "experimenting" with girls. I know of at least one girl who is unfortunately unattractive and unnecessarily overweight who "became a lesbian" with her best friend mostly because guys wouldn't pay her much attention. She had huge crushes on guys when she was younger and idolized pop stars etc, then suddenly changed gears.

I don't blame the girls. Guys are funny looking, lumpy, hairy, and smell bad.

232 In the leftist worldview, the individual doesn't matter except as part of a group.

yes and no. To the individual, he/she is the most important thing in the universe, being part of a group amplifies that feeling.

the group leaders see the individuals as utility cogs in a great machine that the group leaders grow, manage, and own. The group leaders know to feed the over inflated self esteem of the individual as a lever to manipulate the group.

This explains why you see Ferguson protesters going face to face with law enforcement, screaming insults knowing they can't be touched because of their group membership.

I feel nothing but disgust for men who are HIV positive that refuse to use condoms during random bathhouse sexual encounters. As for the "gay mafia activists", while I do no always agree with the results they achieve, I can't blame them for using the political process to get what they want. I wish Conservatives were just half as effective.

I have gay relatives--some are gone now. I had lesbian neighbors, one of whom was one of my husband's very good friends--she was always coming across the street to get him to help her with this or that home repair project or to borrow a tool or ask his advice on a purchase. I have worked with gays who were lovely people--hard working, devoted to their elderly parents, kind, and generous. Two of my MIL's dearest friends each buried a son who died of AIDS. In other words the gays that I have known personally were just like the straights I have known--varied and different.

Tolerance sometimes means, "on this topic, we're not going to discuss it."

The world can be a much more pleasant place if more people did that. It's the people who can't or won't who are going to find themselves in conflict more than they might want. Which is fine, if conflict is what you seek. If it is not though, you treasure the people with whom you can find SOMETHING on which to form a bond.

Nope. I'm not saying Weirddave's friend has to agree with him on everything. He can't even bring this up with her for fear of her terminating the "friendship".

And for what? Is Weirddave saying he thinks SHE'S one of the good lesbians, but all the rest deserve to be stoned to death? But he'd make an exception for her?

No. He's just saying ... think about your views on gay marriage and see if they conflict with some other views.

Very polite. Very reasonable.

And afterwards, they can both say "I hear your postition, but I disagree."

And hell, Weirddave doesn't want to say "on this topic, we're not going to discuss it".

He WANTS to discuss it with her. He said he can't, because he may loose the "friendship."

Why do you turn women into lesbians so much?

I dunno. Happens in every bar I go to. What the hell is wrong with them broads?

I see no problem with lesbians as long as they're hot.

257 Throughout history up until yesterday anywhere there is war. strife and pain you'll find groups against groups or people who identify as a certain group over people who identify as another group. War is even a very large group (nation) against another very large group. Why Stalin found it easier to appeal to nationalism over communism in WWII but that is a different story.

Closer to home the Left plays this game to perfection in America. Rush calling Sandra Fluke a slut (you are a slut if you need government help to pay for the prodigious amount of birth control you need but I digress) became not Rush v Fluke but 'The War on Women'

Republicans wanting to cut - slow the growth - of welfare spending becomes a war against blacks. Immigration a war against Latinos, etc.

Won't matter when TeamD counts those precincts or do you really think Romney got all those goose-eggs on his own.

261 My ex's eldest son is gay and his whole life revolves around his gayness and how persecuted they are. Uh, dumbass....you live in West Hollywood where being straight is unusual. I've asked him about the persecution of gays in Russia, Iran, many countries in Africa, etc. and is this how he sees gays in America? He won't answer - he is too invested in his own little "drama".

I have gay male and female friends and we just have a good time like the other people that I have in my life - no one cares.

262 How much does this friend *really* respect and treasure you, if simply
making these points could cause her to terminate you as a friend?

Sorry I didn't respond right away, I had to go see a client.

These are good questions, but I think you're misunderstanding what is just a question of tactics. For the purpose of these posts here, trying to frame a discussion, I can put it thusly:

"Oh yea? Well what about THIS and THIS and THIS, huh? Let's consider all these points!"

Do that in real life and a person's natural reaction is to shut you out and shut the conversation down, it's a defensive mechanism. It wasn't so much that I don't want to, can't or even am not broaching the subject, but I'm doing it in such a way to allow her to reach the right conclusions. In other words I want to make an effective argument, not just make an argument.

I've know her for years, she's reachable, but you're not going to change anybody's mind by attacking them. You have to lead the horse to water in such a way that it's thirsty when you get there.

This? These posts? This is all theory, to help me clarify my thoughts to more effectively express them, to get others to comment with aspects that I maybe haven't considered, and to give other the opportunity to hone their own arguments and beliefs.

Interpersonal relationships require a whole different set of tools. For example after her rant, I responded "Oh, I understand exactly how you feel, there have been times when judges have made rulings based not on the law but on their own feelings that drove me crazy". She want "Exactly!" and continued on. Do you think I didn't plant a seed there?

267 You are dishonest to the fullest and also a coward.

The beef was that you have denied that persecution of homosexual in WW2 was manufactured by the gay lobby. Many other posters together with me expressed disagreement with these concepts and brought evidence.

I made you notice that the gay lobby you want to protect to much are using the few gays killed (because they were anti regime, communists or jews) to again use the victimhood card, instil emotional pity in todays ignorant population and use it as blacks use slavery ('because we have been persecuted during WW2, please fill up the city of memorial and silence the church, you know you have to since you allowed poor gheys to be killed in WW2').

To all of this, your reply was that I am homophobe, you were not able to bring one single point of evidence that gheys were actually persecuted more or equally than any other targeted group (roma, jews, disabled).

If you think it is all fine and dandy that a group that you like and prefer makes up FALSE statements to advance their cause (which incidentally will disadvantage a lot of conservative causes), well I have nothing to add.

I repeat you are the problem, not the solution.

Posted by: fromabroad at November 30, 2014 03:38 AM (rnV3B)

268 This is a pretty stupid article/argument.
One (the individual) does not necessarily exclude the other (the group).
To say one is ABSOLUTELY a higher priority smacks of mindless ideology.

It's perfectly reasonable to say he doesn't want to hear about your homo friends, and it is ALSO perfectly reasonable to say the gaystapo will "throw the author under the bus" given the opportunity.

The author's claimed "conservatism" here reeks a bit of Leftist "guilt-ridden hand-wringing."

269 She's right! You are the Al Capone of gayness! You're trying to make us all gay! You won't stop until the world is a great big, non-stop orgy of same sex love. Everybody all oiled up and writhing around like in Caligula. Stop it! Just stop it. Liking gay people as individuals is not allowed. Tow the party line why don't you, cuz the next stop on this train is San Francisco. You don't want the whole world to be like San Francisco do you?

Posted by: Michelle at November 30, 2014 12:09 PM (jd3Tb)

270 Also, I forgot to say, you definitely, for sure, want all cheerleaders to be gay. This is an undisputed fact!!!
