Latest Trend in #Ferguson Protests: Blocking America's Highways

Dozens of UCSD students brought traffic to a halt on northbound Interstate 5 Wednesday morning to protest the decision of a grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., not to indict a white policeman for killing an unarmed black teenager.

A crowd of an estimated 50 to 70 protesters marched onto the freeway at Nobel Drive at about 6:49 a.m., blocking the northbound lanes. They remained in the roadway for about 40 minutes until San Diego police arrived and removed them.

The protesters left the freeway peacefully and began marching on surface streets. There were no immediate reports of arrests.

I'll say it right now: This is such an egregious and deliberate provocation and harassment of innocent people that I will not convict anyone who assaults or even kills these kind of protesters.

Just come up with some kind of semi-plausible BS about not seeing them due to reflections of Venus trapped in swamp gas that got into your eye and you'll walk free. People get shot for less every single day. Note that this can be avoided if the police will come down hard on freeway blockers but since they won't, it'll have to be discouraged in a different, harsher way.

Obama Publicly Admits He Acted Extra-Constitutionally

"Listen, you know -- here. Can I just say this, all right? I've listened to you. I heard you. I heard you. I heard you. All right? Now I have been respectful, I let you holler. All right? So let me just -- nobody is removing you. I have heard you, but you have got to listen to me, too. All right? And I understand you may disagree, I understand you may disagree. But we have got to be able to talk honestly about these issues, all right?

"Now, you're absolutely right that there have been significant numbers of deportations. That's true. But what you are not paying attention to is the fact that I just took an action to change the law."

'Hands Up, Don't Shoot' Was All A Lie

But truth must bow down before the revolutionary narrative.

The forensic evidence collected at the scene includes blood droplet spatter that suggests Michael Brown did in fact turn and then advance upon Officer Wilson.

Evidence collected inside the car, on Wilson's gun, from his uniform, and from Michael Brown's body in three separate autopsies are consistent with the claim that Brown was shot in the hand in the struggle over the weapon.

Multiple eyewitnesses confirmed the physical evidence that Michael Brown was advancing upon Officer Wilson when he was shot and killed.

While there may not be such thing as a "textbook" shooting, every single shot fired by Officer Wilson, from the first attempt inside the Tahoe until the final shot into the apex of a charging Brown's head, was entirely justified as a matter of self-defense.

Remembering Johnny 'Mike' Spann

13 years ago yesterday he was the first American killed in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.

The story of this small band of men has been told, but not told enough.

Spann was killed during the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi when Taliban prisoners gained access to weapons and attacked.

Spann was killed during that uprising (see video).  One of the prisoners was the so-called American Taliban, John Walker Lyndh, who Spann interrogated shortly before Spann's death.

And his interrogation of Johnny Walker Lindh minutes before the uprising may have been one of his last conversations:

Spann [to Dave]: Yeah, he won't talk to me.

Dave: OK, all right. We explained what the deal is to him.

Spann: I was explaining to the guy we just want to talk to him, find out what his story is.

Spann and Dave talk, inaudible.

Dave [to Spann]: The problem is, he's got to decide if he wants to live or die and die here. We're just going to leave him, and he's going to f-cking sit in prison the rest of his f-cking short life. It's his decision, man. We can only help the guys who want to talk to us. We can only get the Red Cross to help so many guys.

Spann [to Walker]: Do you know the people here you're working with are terrorists and killed other Muslims? There were several hundred Muslims killed in the bombing in New York City. Is that what the Koran teaches? I don't think so. Are you going to talk to us?

Walker does not respond

Dave [to Spann]: That's all right man. Gotta give him a chance, he got his chance.

Spann and Dave stand and talk to each other. Both look frustrated. Spann stands with his hands on his hips, and Dave kicks up some dust with his boot.

Out: 'Unlawful Combatants'
In: 'Unprivileged Enemy Belligerents'

At any rate, the new nomenclature seems pretty silly, and the need to change from unlawful combatant non-existent. Don't blame the Department of Defense for it, although we can certainly wonder why it took them five years to catch up to the changes (and what may have prompted the recent action). That silliness comes from one of America's great resources of silliness and meaningless redefinitions of perfectly suitable language - from your elected officials on Capitol Hill. On the plus side, we can now ask terrorists to check their unprivilege as they enter the detention system, or something.

Comment of the Day

26 ace years ago you had mentioned finding dirt on reporters and treating them to It the way they treat the population.
is that still a viable idea?
although i imagine they would have the ability to hide their dirt better as they have Friends in higher places than the average joe

Posted by: willow at November 25, 2014 05:31 PM (nqBYe)

I've thought about doing this in the past but the most useful dirt and details might also open up legal issues. Perhaps if there was a public version and then a private membership version with complete details...

Also it appears that the NYT reporters who revealed Darren Wilson's address have now been doxxed.

Meet The New Jews

But while the quotas for Jews are gone, the Ivy League now, by all accounts, has quotas for Asian students. They are seen as people who study too hard, boring grinds who aren't much fun - and, of course, their parents aren't as rich and connected. And though the numbers of highly qualified Asian applicants have grown dramatically, the number of Asians admitted stays pretty much the same every year.

Now the Asian students are suing. In a lawsuit against Harvard, they are claiming that Harvard demands higher qualifications from Asian students than from others, and that it uses "racial classifications to engage in the same brand of invidious discrimination against Asian Americans that it formerly used to limit the number of Jewish students in its student body."

From the graph it's clear that Caltech did not get onboard with the Asian quota train.

Jackie Chan DVDs Help Boost Solar Panel Efficiency

I was skeptical when I first saw the headline but the results seem to be legit. The biggest improvement comes in the near IR range which means that light between 800nm and 1000nm which was essentially wasted before now gets converted into electrons.

Apparently the pit pattern on a blu-ray disk is great at helping trap photons, rather than reflecting them. Applying this pattern to the glass in a solar panel can boost efficiency by 22%. Researchers at Northwestern tested this system with Jackie Chan discs. From the article: "To increase the efficiency of a solar panel by 22%, the researchers at Northwestern bought a copy of Police Story 3: Supercop on Blu-ray; removed the top plastic layer, exposing the recording medium beneath; cast a mold of the quasi-random pattern; and then used the mold to create a photovoltaic cell with the same pattern....The end result is a solar panel that has a quantum efficiency of around 40% - up about 22% from the non-patterned solar panel."

31 The only reason I can think of for the change in nomenclature is that unlawful combatant was too militaristic, while an unprivileged enemy belligerent sounds like a mostly peaceful guy that is yet another victim of white privilege! 34 The Detroit Police Dept. fixed the road blockers rather quickly. They simply took a line of patrol cars and drove along side the mob, herding them like sheep(which they are) until they were all back on the sidewalk. The entire time blaring on loudspeakers that if they didn't get back on the sidewalk, they would be arrested.
A group lined themselves across I 75 in Detroit, and I think that lasted about 10 minutes and the cops shut that down also.

Why it would take 40 minutes for the San Diego police to move a bunch of idiots off the freeway is beyond imagination.

Martial arts flicks are their own genre, Chan's 70s and 80s stuff was amazing. In the 90s he finally broke in America. It was cool to see what he could do with a little more money, but he was also middle-aged by then.

Juan must have stopped and talked to Ted Williams in the hallway. Ted was on Greta tonight and said that as a "former police officer", he would have waited for backup to confront someone who had just robbed a store.

Now I know why it took San Diego 40 minutes to clear the freeway, every cop was waiting for backup....

109 The outtakes from Chan's films were always fun to watch. The # of time's he severely injured himself while filming. Dude was a madman and physical genius. And his physical comedy was great.

His American movies were hit and miss. But he was acting in his 2nd language.

He made a bunch of the greatest martial arts fight scenes ever and was a pioneer of the genre. Very creative guy.

And compared to the shaky cam fight scenes nowadays, it's amazing how few cuts his fight scenes had and how intricate they were.

Martial arts flicks tend not to age well, that's true. They tend to be low budget and the acting is often pretty bad.

But that's not really the point. Fans of martial arts flicks want to see amazing fight scenes and crazy stunts -- and Jackie Chan delivered.

I informed him that most of the businesses looted were owned by minorities. Apparently MSNBC and Daily Kos didn't report on the Cake Lady whose shop was trashed. Since they were cheering on the looting, I can see why showing a weeping black woman upset because her shop was trashed by the mob would upset the Narrative.

I had fun asking the guy why he assumed the business owners were all white and Republican. Does he think all blacks are on welfare? Are they too stupid to own businesses? We already know the left thinks they're too dumb to get ID cards.

I'm not surprised, with recent cuts, they're short-handed and don't have time or will to screw around.

The chief of police gave a statement that home-owners had a right to protect themselves. He seemed to be saying, "Hey, if you break into someone's house and they shoot you, tough noogies."

It looks like November is going out like a monster dose of stiff wind for the Democrats:

- Election 2014 was real bad for the Democrats. Mary Landrieu will likely be unemployed by January, and Hillary! is the front-runner (Prediction: If Hillary! runs, what's happening to Bill Cosby will seem pleasant to what will happen to Bill);

- Hairy Reid botched a tax bill, and the rest of the D's are furious (I wonder if he'll run again in 2016);

- Chuck "The Schmuck" Schumer has stated that the D's should have fixed the economy in 2010 instead of passing ObamaCare;

- Teh JEF has publicly stated that he "changed the law" viz. immigration;

- and EVERYONE hates Mooch's Lunch program ... doubtless, the only other thing she's proud of.

... now, if only "Twitch" McConnell and John "The Weeper" will stand up to Teh Jef in January ... I wonder if Teh JEF will double-down on over-reach ... and thus truly become "historic".

The place he was cleaning up was absolutely trashed. I couldn't tell for sure what it was.
I really felt sorry for him. There is somebody who is trying to have a decent life, provide for his kids and his neighborhood is trashed by outsiders egging on the unemployed natives.

Yeah, all these lefties are saying "Brown walked away! Why did Wilson get out of his car and pick a fight with him?" Uh, because Wilson is a cop? Nah, can't be. Wilson just woke up that morning determined to kill a black guy.

There are plenty of actual cases of cops using unnecessary force. This wasn't one of them.

The one involving the NC family who called 911 because they wanted help subduing their mentally ill son and the cops coming in, saying, "We don't have time for this" and blowing the kid away in front of his parents was the worst one I've heard of - but the family is white, so the national media isn't interested.

165 Gotta say I have mixed feelings on the whole "digging up dirt on reporters" thing. I work in the media and know lots of good, hardworking reporters who happen to be leftist dolts. Despite their leanings, 90 percent of the work they do is solid, important, but dull work that isn't being done by anybody else. I used to be a reporter myself, and I spent many, many, many boring hours in boring public meetings where I was the only member of the "public" present to record what was going on. (There are many places where not even reporters are present at a lot of important-but-dull public meetings, which is why you get things like Grubergate and the whole scandal in Bell, California.) It's thankless work, and somebody has to do it, and I don't want to discourage the depressingly small number of folks who are doing it now.

On the other hand...

I have relatives in law enforcement; what those New York Times reporters did was absolutely despicable, and as soon as I saw their addresses, I happily disseminated them as far and wide as possible. That really was worth the full Alinsky, "punch back twice as hard" treatment.

So I guess I'd say: yes, in extraordinary circumstances, treating the press as an "enemy combatant," so to speak, is justified. But be careful. We don't want the entire world to degenerate into a constant Internet flame war.

187 I spent five minutes trying to get this information but only got some of it....

I wonder what is the source of Caltech's Asian surge? They were around 25% in 2002(?) to around 40% by around 2008. During that period, the size of the USA Asian applicant pool doesn't look like it changed that much. Now, Caltech is a very small school, so it doesn't take too many students to swing their percentages.

So...
- just more strong Asian applicants vs. those of other races?
- removal of an old "Asian quota" - seems unlikely
- strong Asian applicants rejected by schools with quotas choose to go to Caltech
- Caltech is by 2012 23% foreign undergraduate, if I read the numbers correctly (iffy - could be combo grad and ugrad). Was there a surge of foreign Asian students? These folks pay full freight and don't come with federal loan strings - SoCal prep schools and colleges could easily fill with bright children of Chinese plutocrats with no problem.

Does anyone have better information - hard facts, preferably over that entire period?

Well stated.

I think one thing that pushes me into the Do Unto Others camp is the fact that the media is rarely self-critical. It seems that particularly those in the major outlets consider themselves above reproach, question, or critique.

Witness almost any of Hewitt's interviews with leftie reporters. They become as evasive and snippy as any politician when Hewitt asks them banal things like, "Did you vote for Obama?" It's their sputtering, defensive responses sound almost like he's uncovered some pathology.

That many in the media recoil from being subject the very same direct and / or pointed questions they pose to others on a routine basis just launches so many red flags, that I can't help but really wish for a thorough vetting of the major outlets.

The reporter's dictum used to amount to the idea that if a interviewee is evasive, they are hiding something and, at that point, many reporters turn an interview into a mad-minute firing exercise and reason enough for a scouring of the interviewee's past.

The very same standard should apply to those in the media who use their position as an opportunity to launch brickbats at their chosen political targets.

Again, this is politics, even if the partisans who operate under the cloak of 'journalism' decry otherwise. Having a laminate swinging from your lanyard shouldn't protect anyone from accusation of acting like a political hack.

242 Came very close to hitting deer, but missed - thank God.

I have a good deer story though. My sister used to have a wicker deer that she used as a Christmas decoration. She'd put a red bulb on the thing's nose and make it into Rudolph and put it in the front yard.

Two winters ago, a young buck kept coming around to scare at the wicker deer. (Her subdivision is right next to a very big park and has a deer problem.) He'd just stand there and gaze at it, lovestricken. One day she came home and found the thing smashed to pieces. A neighborhood told her the buck had come around again and attempted to mount it.

It didn't work real well. Unfortunately, the neighbor, an old lady, didn't take pictures.

Went to pass a truck out Barstow way, heard a CRUNCH and the accelerator goes all the way to the floor and stays there; something in the linkage broke.

Still had the cruise control, though, and decided I was more likely to be able to push on to Vegas than get turned around to Barstow; cruise control doesn't engage below 25, so one red light and I was toast.

So I spent the afternoon staging a spontaneous recreation of Speed. Made it almost to the Tropicana exit before I had to drop below 25.

In these gawdy homes were bathrooms with a bidet. That's class, was the conventional wisdom behind it.

Advertising you squat over a fountain and wash your dirty ass, splashing dirty water all over the place is classy.

He was arguing that the path requires the officer to have shot the thug from above and behind.

naturally hannity had no idea what he was talking about and likely not any knowledge of firearms.

300 I was at a market several years ago, just before Thanksgiving. There was a woman with 25 tubs of Ready-Whip in a shopping cart.
I asked why so much desert topping. The woman said she was from another store and they had run out, she was on a restock run and to not say anything since her store was a competitor.

307 Last weekend I saw Bob Dylan live. He played 19 songs.

6 out of 19 were from his 2012 album "Tempest".

10 out of 19 were from 2000 or later.

15 out of 19 were from 1980 or later.

He played 2 from the 1960s and 2 from the 1970s.

The concert was absolutely riveting. Not bad for a "Sixties legend".

I've been saying for years that I'd love to see him do a show consisting entirely of post-2000 songs. They're that good. I almost got my wish.

I heard juan williams or someone similar say somehting along the lines of he had a gun - th cop - why was he afraid of the kid? whoever was talking really did not understand that the gun only protects you if you shoot the attacker. you are not afforded some magical protection or force field simply because you are holding a gun.

324 OK, after this comment, I'm really going to bed

"On a trip to Europe on of the other Americans did not know what the bide was so he ended up washing his pants in it."

I remember reading an account of a German woman whose family was forced to billet Soviet soldiers when they charged in from the Eastern front at the end of WWII. Many of them didn't know what the toilets were for and used them to take sponge baths. The Germans (who were treated very nastily by the Soviets; however, considering how the Germans treated the countries they occupied it's difficult to feel sorry for them) didn't tell the Soviets how the toilets were actually supposed to be used.

OK now, goodnight and a good turkey day to all. And good night to you, Misanthropic Humanitarian.

Nothing special going on with the neighbors -- why do you ask?

Posted by: cthulhu at November 27, 2014 12:33 AM (T1005)

336 Berkeleyside, the online newspaper for Berkeley, just published an article about some graffiti written in front of a Berkeley elementary school (Malcolm X School -- for Kindergarten to 3rd grade) which referred to the Mike Brown/Ferguson case:

http://tinyurl.com/lwxwqz5

"Ferguson decision prompts thoughts written in chalk at Berkeley elementary school . . .

Among the sentiments expressed: "Black Lives Matter," "Don't Hurt or Kill Anyone," and "We Stand with Ferguson." . . .

. . ."Little kids wrote this. . . Can't imagine what it's like for kids to have to consider that they could die in the same way too."

If readers have information about the writing, please share it in the Comments."

Etc.

Well, time for the Reality Brigade to swoop in.

The following comment was just left (though it may not appear yet, as it remains "in moderation" for now):

"aperson - 14 minutes ago
Hold on, this is waiting to be approved by Berkeleyside.

" "Little kids wrote this . . . Can't imagine what it's like for kids to have to consider that they could die in the same way too." If readers have information about the writing, please share it in the Comments."

Yes, I have some information about the writing for you:

Little kids did NOT write this.

The writing style and graphic arrangement are far far beyond what little kids are capable of -- it was all self-evidently written by adults, except perhaps for a few words written by kids' hands but under adult supervision.

Second of all, little kids have no concept of 99% of the historical and political aspects involved, and no kid is going to equate Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown, nor even know who thee people are.

C'mon, folks, think back to when YOU were seven years old. Despite any retroactive revisionism you may try to overly on your child self, in reality you did not yet grasp what was going on in the real world, or the intricacies of history.

So, since these drawing were made by adults, and placed outside an elementary school, the only conclusion we can reach is that this is yet another political hoax (albeit a very minor one), of adults trying to make passersby (and readers of Berkeleyside) to think that elementary school kids are being radicalized and expressing this moment's on-point PC opinion about some current news event.

Puh-lease.

If Berkeleyside wanted to increase its credibility as a legitimate news source, it would do an expose on who perpetrated this hoax, and not parrot the hoaxer's narrative as if it was true."

I like this song. It's a nice, playful waltz, and the lyrics are pretty cool.

386 Running them over tends to be a non-solution since it's felony assault or manslaughter and someone would have your plate number on their cellphone

Every freeway has plenty of stones, bottles, other detritus that can be deployed by fed up commuters towards the thugs and their special snowflake friends

Sometimes you have to speak to them in their own language. They tend to understand the universal language of a bottle or stone hitting them in the face

Best part is it's a group activity, no one actually "remembers" who was throwing the projectiles, and stones don't have registration tags

407 I am not not not suggesting it, but I did guess at the time that this was probably a class of students... probably the students in some Studies class... but clearly all young. Not an adult standing in that line. Not a ONE of them with a job! But there was a truly pissed off black guy with a bandana tied around his head who was headed up to the line to make it personal but the police told him to go back to his car.

I would hate to see anyone hurt permanently, but the mental vision of one of these privileged university student brats all wallowing in their angsty oppression getting the snot beat out of them by an angry working-class black man AND the university getting sued by their parents...

Well, I'd hate myself for the joy I'd feel.

Viscous: slow to pour, "thick".

Sticky: adheres to surfaces, can't readily wipe it off.

The second is much nastier than the first, if it is on you, and on fire. Molten nylon is sticky, which is why you don't wear nylon clothing in places where a flash fire might occur, like on the floor of a drilling rig.

Get all the rust out, clean thoroughly....and then use any vegetable oil in a 450 oven. The reason to use a vegetable oil instead of Crisco is that you want a thin, even coating and Crisco will be thicker and lumpier. 449 Currently watching Hansel & Gretel on Ace's recommendation. I suspect I like it more than he did, but I generally do enjoy actioners that don't pretend to be anything more than simply entertaining, whether they're done seriously (such as Ronin) or with at least half a tongue in the cheek, such as this one.

"Message" action movies, or action movies that try to be philosophical or otherwise deep usually (but not always) just end up pissing me off.

Good call, Ace.

38 I like Jackie Chan, but as he's gotten older he's gotten all pro-China and pro-Chicom.
Well he got older after he cancelled that film shoot on the top of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. That was quite a lucky coincidence for him.

453 I acquired a few very old cast iron pans last weekend. They're in pretty decent shape, but have been in a garage for decades...
what's the best way to clean season them?
I get so many different articles on the interwebs. I'm thinking Crisco a 450 oven.

Thoughts?

Posted by: shredded chi

Clean? Dirty?

If they're fairly clean, baking soda and a quick scrub, i'd guess. Dry thoroughly, the most important step. Check closely for left-over crud.

Season, any non-animal fat should work. I think the idea is to avoid oils that go rancid.

Heat up the pan on the stove before adding oil. Heated metal expands obviously, so you want to add oil to the pan after it's hot, not super hot, just hot.

The whole pan? Hmm, I've read this but I think adding oil to any part but the cooking surface sounds kind of bogus.

If the pans have rust, you may have to break out the gloves, steel wool, and serious kitchen productsd. Dry, dry, dry. Wash, dry, dry, dry, and then heat, oil, and heat in oven.

( just a random yahoo's opinion )

Why? Because "belligerent" and "combatant" are philosophically equivalent, pretty neutral, so really no difference there. And "unprivileged", as opposed to "unlawful", actually gets at a key point that is generally unknown and of course ignored by the idiots constantly trying to blacken the names of US and other civilized countries fighting the vile criminals known as terrorists.

The Geneva Conventions are not a good behavior pledge. They are a detailed set of interlocking duties, obligations, restrictionsand associated PRIVILEGES one earns from compliance therewith. Terroristsin fact have not earned the privileges of the Geneva framework. We and our allies, for good reasons of our own (those details of this are debatable and mutable), extend many Geneva privileges to some of those detained in the war on terror. But this is optional, we are not obligated to do so.

Not that any of it, with an electorate as unserious as ours and "elites" so degraded and unworthy, matters any more. But in another universe, it would be a potentially good change, if it were accompanied by education on the topic.

That's a good point. I'd originally awarded it 1-1/2 "meh"s out of five, but by shifting the emphasis to "play by the rules and gain privileges", it does illustrate an important point. A similar point to the term "outlaw" -- this technically referred to those "outside the law", who had been cast out of the protections of due process. You could slaughter an outlaw, grill 'em, and serve 'em with fava beans and a nice Chianti, and not be charged with murder or manslaughter. Similarly, anyone not covered by the Geneva Conventions on a battlefield can have no claims for justice based on those Conventions.

Close, but in this case the legacy of what I taught him does still have a foothold. He spends time fighting with the SJWs too. He's a billiard ball, knocking back and forth between common sense and idiocy. I'm sure I was the same at 20, but back then the separation between the two was not nearly as much.

How can I put this? Using your terms, he's not a member of the cult, but he finds it interesting. I have to nudge subtly, not outright oppose. It's maddening.

Posted by: weirddave at November 27, 2014 02:20 AM (KAmzK)

478 The sheer idiocy over the MO grand jury decision shouldn't really shock us. Look at the degradation of standards in this country. This was an absolute open/shut, nothing incident. Nothing complicated or interesting, happens several times a week. Yet the "press" and a swath of the populace can believe there's "injustice" in any of this?

The ignorance of firearms, which is of course predominant, is flaunting itself all over. Had someone I know a few days ago wonder (like Ben Carson, apparently) why police can't shoot to wound, not kill. (face palm)

I actually briefly explained the difficulty of hitting a target quickly under stress - and how the wound pattern on Brown perfectly illustrated a typical result ofhigh-stress shooting by a right-hander using a semi-auto. Low/left misses (hits in Brown's right arm/shoulder), followed by one centered shot (head and final shot).

Notwithstanding all this, as I expected seems the country doesn't give a f**k about this, and probably can wrap its head around the idea that attacking an armed policeman could be dangerous. Reminds me, as to the huge divide between "elite" and fringe minority mindsets and the mainstream,of the hilarious situation with the American to be caned by police in Singapore during Clinton the Disastrous' reign. Typical whining and idiocy from the WH and State until a poll was published showing huge support for Singapore's policy. Being a poll-driven non-entity, Clinton of course immediately lost interest and shut up.

Congrats!!!!

I've lost one piece so far -- the indicator dials on the handles that move the X and Y axis are held true to the handles not by setscrews, as you might expect, but by little springs, that are about 5/8" long curved pieces of metal and look like garbage. When you tear it down, watch out for them.

If you don't know about these guys already, you need to have http://littlemachineshop.com/ bookmarked. They're not the cheapest, but they have support like nobody's business. I've bought a few hundred bucks' worth-of-stuff from them 'cause I've gotten more than that value from their videos, suggestions, tips, and other resources.

And one more thing about the teardown -- you want to do the teardown, cleanup, and re-lube in one weekend. This stuff will practically rust in front of you if you fog it with your breath.

483 cthulhu, it's really just another death-rattle from my Old America brain, the one that lived in a somewhat serious country - but yeah the "privilege" concept is a key one.

Of course in the Bush years, when the international rot revealed was so stark that it even encompassed the Int. Comm. of the Red Cross, the US uniformly refused to take the offensive to correct distortions and demonize those taking dishonest cheap shots at the good guys. But it went beyond just the catastrophic (and, actually, dishonorable) near silence of the US in the face of a global tsunami of slander and distortion (incl. inside the US).

The need for updates to Geneva was obvious soon after 9/11. Notwithstanding the truly breathtaking crap from the legal advisor to the ICRC himself. But the US feared several of its "allies" would prove unreliable in any new round of Geneva - that it was better to limp along with an outdated framework than to risk the disaster that might occur if the Conventions were opened for amendment (a normal, intermittent thing). THAT is how lonely a serious, responsible, righteous country is today's world.

I used kerosene, 'cause it's cheap. I did it outside, 'cause of fumes. I also used a small bucket, an old toothbrush and a packet of shop towels (which you want to use sparingly, as laundry is a problem when soaked in hydrocarbons) and paper towels. You'll also need a scraper (I used old credit cards that I hadn't yet punched guitar picks out of). I even bought a plastic dishwashing drainboard to make sure sloshed kerosene didn't end up in my lap.

493 navybrat, good question. To summarize, the greatest value of Geneva comes in cases where you are fighting a signatory power (Germany in WWII best example). So yeah, against al Qaeda there's not much point.

At least to certain parts. The US and its closest allies, for the right reasons, don't need the codified rules of Geneva to do the right thing in battle, and esp. WRT non-combatants. We don't deliberately target non-combatants (quite the contrary, of course, we protect them to a degree never before even contemplated in history, as do the Israelis). No collective punishments, reprisals, etc.

My point was just that use of the word "unprivileged" actually got at a key and ignored fact, that Geneva involves obligations and privileges. This should have been one of many aggressively delivered educational in-your-face campaigns in the Bush years, but we all know that mysterious silence was all that met the non-stop hurricane of slander and distortion against the US.

Again - all academic now.

501 The US also abides by other agreements like the Hague Convention, and observes its own version of the rules of land warfare.

Don't confuse ROE and a reasonable, honorable framework set by all these contracted and self-imposed limits.

ROE that endanger our forces and/or put tactical decisions in the hands of lawyers are not reasonable, and usually result in greater harm to non-combatants - and even to our reputation (innocents in the places we've been fighting generally want us to take care of business, and understand better than lawyers in conference rooms that a fastidious approach to these conflicts just prolongs them and gets MORE innocents killed).

507 I wish everyone a very happy thanksgiving day!
I can't argue from a lawyers point of view, the Geneva Convention, the Hague, or any other artificial restraints that we willingly adhere to while our adversaries are bound by nothing.
I simply point out that it is an illusion, and that had the minutemen adhered to it at Concord and Lexington, we would all be subjects right now.
After all, the redcoats marched out in battle formation, all pretty in a row.
And we yanks sniped at them from the trees.
And so they fell.
This was all very frowned upon at the time. I am sure that strongly worded letters were penned. Eyebrows were furrowed.
And later General G. Washington ordered an attack on Trenton on Christmas day! I
s nothing sacred???
Have you any idea how that may have disturbed the wearers of the powdered wigs?
It must have been appalling to even consider. The very nerve.
harrumph.

510 I can't for the life of me, understand how anyone can come to a conclusion about this or any event, without being there to witness it. The best one can do is pour over the evidence given to the people on that jury, but it's like way too much, so no one seems to be bothering. So people are either too stupid to think this thru or they're jumping on a bandwagon because it feels good and they know it and they're lying about it. Anyone manipulated by the media with their drips and drabs of 15 minutes of hateful fame characters are just dumbasses.

WD, you owe me nothing. We all have our particular quirks and histories, and that just makes us human. The concern I had was joking with morons in an accessible forum about things best kept to family, where a hug can be a polygraph. I wish nothing but the best for you, Gingy, Big, and Little.

I also know of situations where adoption is a real issue dividing families, and ones where learning about being adopted created problems....and situations within my own family where primogeniture isn't quite as clear-cut as generally assumed....but such are family business.

As was covered in a previous thread, someone's real dad is the guy who was there, acting as "dad". Sperm donors, godfathers, uncles, child-support payers and baby-daddies need not apply. And the bond between a dad and his kid is one of the strongest that humans are capable of forming. It is the model for feelings of loyalty, duty, respect, and honor that form the basis of civil society.

I have a friend who is seriously hurt because two kids called him "dad" for some years, and are now estranged from him. Fatherhood is a "built-in" -- an essential function that is part of our DNA and can take precedence over laws or culture. As such, it scares me that our debased culture appears to treat it as a plaything.

But, given that great flaw in our culture....there is a huge difference in what we live from day-to-day and what comes from our mouths. The more we mock the anti-dad worldview in culture, the better.....so long as we continue to live in a way where being a dad is done properly.

573 And in the department of 'Happy News'...

...I found out why the SJW idiots didn't try for a repeat of shutting down of I-75 in Cincinnati. The results:

$3000 fine... each
They're all guests of the County Pokey until Monday... NO Turkey Day release...
GPS jewelry during their parole term...

Pro-tip: There are NO SJW Judges in Hamilton County/SW Ohio...
...they wouldn't survive the next election cycle.

576 The only reason people could shut down I-5 in SD is becaue it's pretty much always gridlocked anyway. Think about it. How many freeways do you know where the traffic is slow enough for a line of people to form on it?

577 Actually, some people got out of their cars in SD and gave the protesters hell. The cops had to come and break it up! Must have been morons.

578 According to Wikipedia, today is Bruce Lee's birthday (born Lee Jun-fan on this day in 1940)!

579 If I ended up being late to work because the freeway was blocked, I'd get fired - no joke. If you have one of these bosses, you know, the kind that manages by the book (which just shows how uncreative, shortsighted, and incompetent they are), you know that they could care less if there was an earthquake, nope, gotta be on time. If you are late, well, you should have left an hour earlier. So, if I encounter one of these knuckleheads blocking traffic, I will nicely tray to reason with them that I have to get to work. If that doesn't work, I will call my boss and let them explain exactly why I am being prevented from going to work. If that doesn't work, well, then I am just going to get in my car and run right through them. Period. I refuse to get fired from my job just because someone else doesn't have one and they are trying to make a political point about something that has nothing to do with me.
