Pretty cool. I wouldn't call it "low tier", though...local sports broadcasting is almost all that's left of the way things used to be in radio. I'm thankful I work at a station that keeps a local staff on the air from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., at least.
Also, sports broadcasting is one of few jobs I haven't done in radio...just not a big enough fan to be interested. So I have a good respect for anyone who does it well.

You know, I think there's a bit of a mini-generation gap here. Almost everybody I know who was about 17 or 18 or so when "The Graduate" came out just loves that movie. I've heard the "plastics" line from older Boomers almost as much I've heard "where were you when JFK was shot?"
I'm a tail end Boomer who was still little when "The Graduate" was released and when I saw it in hs with some friends, we weren't that impressed. I told a older cousin that and he said "WTF! You're kidding! That's a great movie!"
I think the shock value of it in 1968 was a big part of it's appeal. In 1978, it didn't seem so edgy.

It will freeze, eventually.
That's one of the ways of determining the quality of your vodka. Good vodka has a higher ethanol content, which freezes at -173degrees, while shit vodka has a higher water content, which freezes at 32degrees.
So if you stick your vodka in the freezer, the more frost that appears inside, the higher the water content and the lower the quality.

Not really. The problem is the cheap stuff still contains foul tasting distillates that don't freeze off. The only thing that is freezing is water. So you might end up with a more concentrated form of bad vodka.

As far as I know, Chopin is the only major market vodka still made from taters. I like it better than most vodkas, although Russian Standard is pretty good, and I think it's made from sawdust and toenails.

Heh. So he's got the gig working for SECtv. They were in Gainesville recently, someone snapped a pic of Tebow and the other 3 cohosts right before they went live.
Tebow was leading them in prayer. All four heads bowed, eyes closed and grasping each other's hands. And I'll say, it looked completely natural. You can always tell when something like that is uncomfortable or unfamiliar to someone. This was clearly not the first time these guys have done such.

Labour lost over 40% of their vote from four years ago (from 29% of the vote to 17% of the vote.
Conservatives lost only 29% of their vote from four years ago (49% o 35%).
The greans quadrupled their vote from 1% to 4%.
The Lib Dems when from 16% to less than 1% of the vote.
The Lib Dems will go from ruling coalition to almost nothing in 2015.

It was the original Disneyland in Anaheim.
My two favorite parts, by far?
A bench way up near the top of the Swiss Family Treehouse. You could just stop in the middle of the "ride" if you wanted and just hand out there. For some reason, no one else ever seemed to do it.
I sat up there for quite a long time, watching the other people go through the treehouse, and also watch the whole park below, with a fabulous view.
The other place was the balcony outside the Walt Museum (or whatever it was called -- a gallry of old Walt memorabilia) overlooking New Orleans Square. Again, it was a secluded hideaway with comfortable seating and a great view of the action below. And again, no one else seemed to know about it.
The sad coda: i think both are gone now. Swiss Family Treehouse was taken down and replace with the Tarzan Jungle Ride or something to that effect -- and the Walt Museum I think was mostly transferred to the Presidio in SF. Not sure what occupies its former space back in Disneyland.
BTW, I hate thrill rides, so my worst experience was on Space Mountain. Ugh. Horrible. Rollercoasters. (Shudders.)
As you can I am a very old-school, slow-mo person. And I don't like trusting my body to mechanical devices.

I'm a huge roller coaster fan. If I don't feel like I'm about to blackout, it's not a serious coaster. Space Mountain bored me when I was 12.
That being said, Disney World in Orlando still has a Swiss Family Treehouse, and you can indeed hang out at various parts of it and people watch.
Also, Futureworld has a cool slo-mo tram that rides around a good chunk of the park and is perfect for getting away from the crowds and just absorbing everything for a bit.
The thrill rides are fun, but the relaxing and people watching are what I remember most.

I've only been to one Disney park once -- and that was as an adult (with a companion adult, no kids involved.)
It was the original Disneyland in Anaheim.
My two favorite parts, by far?
A bench way up near the top of the Swiss Family Treehouse. You could
just stop in the middle of the "ride" if you wanted and just hand out
there. For some reason, no one else ever seemed to do it.
I sat up there for quite a long time, watching the other people go
through the treehouse, and also watch the whole park below, with a
fabulous view.
The other place was the balcony outside the Walt Museum (or whatever
it was called -- a gallry of old Walt memorabilia) overlooking New
Orleans Square. Again, it was a secluded hideaway with comfortable
seating and a great view of the action below. And again, no one else
seemed to know about it.
The sad coda: i think both are gone now. Swiss Family Treehouse was
taken down and replace with the Tarzan Jungle Ride or something to that
effect -- and the Walt Museum I think was mostly transferred to the
Presidio in SF. Not sure what occupies its former space back in
Disneyland.
BTW, I hate thrill rides, so my worst experience was on Space Mountain. Ugh. Horrible. Rollercoasters. (Shudders.)
As you can I am a very old-school, slow-mo person. And I don't like trusting my body to mechanical devices.

Peoplewatching in New Orleans Square has always been cool. And many of the best parts of Disneyland are in the details. Things like, you'll be walking along Main Street and nearly trip over a kid spilling popcorn -- then keep walking (slowly) for a counted-out 20 seconds and turn around.....and it's gone. One year, we noticed that they changed the trees in Town Square -- overnight.
The Tarzan overlay to the Swiss Family Treehouse was mainly cosmetic, so your bench may still be there. The Disney Gallery was turned into a guest suite for the "Year of [insert number here] Dreams" promotion, so is probably off-limits.

Once I was riding with semi-friend in England in her car (from Walthamstow to Royston -- what a good memory I have!), and she asked me in all sincerity why I had a phobia about cars.
I very vividly explained that we currently were hurtling through space at 70 miles per hour in a little metal box just a few inches off the ground, purportedly controlled by an extremely convoluted interconnected series of mechanical and electrical parts which neither of us understood, and that if any one of them malfunctioned or broke for any reason, that metal box (with us inside) could go careening uncontrolled into any number of unmovable objects. Furthermore, the same fact held true for every car around us, and if any of them had a malfunction, it could crash into us. And moreover, the slightest inattention or spasm or suicidal thought or incompetency on her part or on the part of anyone around her could also propel our little metal box to a disastrous encounter.
Not sure how I did it, but she was so affected by my monologue that she pulled over to the shoulder, suddenly gripped by a newfound awareness of just how outrageous it is that we hurtle through space in little metal boxes without the slightest care or concern.
She later wrote to me and cursed me for having too effectively conveyed to her my phobia, which she now suffered from worse than I did.

Heh. So he's got the gig working for SECtv. They were in Gainesville recently, someone snapped a pic of Tebow and the other 3 cohosts right before they went live.
Tebow was leading them in prayer. All four heads bowed, eyes closed and grasping each other's hands. And I'll say, it looked completely natural. You can always tell when something like that is uncomfortable or unfamiliar to someone. This was clearly not the first time these guys have done such.

Love to stay up on #2 pistol range. Two interesting shooters came there today. One guy who's been making his own AR lowers (the 80% lower thing). Still have no interest in evil black rifles, but lots of interesting info about ridiculous federal/CA laws I've never heard of (you'd have to devote some serious time to plumb the depths), and how to "comply" so as to defeat their purpose. And a guy with a lever gun (Rossi clone of a Winchester 1892, 357 mag), who hunts pigs in Hawaii. Knew I wanted a lever gun some day - shot his, dammit it was sweet and easy-shooting.
No SEALS on #3 today. Some NAVY, maybe EOD. Looked like they were using mostly handguns and plate racks, though there were some nice stretches of full-auto fire just before I went back to the main range.
Have to look at my loads in the .38. Damn smoke from lead lube was ridiculous - probably need to up the load a bit. Mosin sight seems OK, zeroed the front sight more or less, but the damn thing would not feed properly when loaded with the nice blued Bulgarian stripper clips, even though I shimmed the magazine with plastic washers and it worked fine in the garage.
Nice variety of military aircraft passing overhead, including a C-17, don't see those in SoCal that often. Was too disgusted to even try my usual shtick at the Border Patrol checkpoint, just thanked him for being there (thinking of adding "not sure any more why we have you here, though").

Heard a state trooper years ago saying that if you want to be safe at night while driving, stay in the right lane. He said that the drunks tend to pull into the left lane thinking it is a 2 lane road and start driving, usually without their headlights. The road from Newhall to Ventura has a stretch with some huge eucalyptus trees next to it. I was talking to a CHP who had helped clean up after a wreck there.....they knew it was a Corvette very shortly, 'cause the rear bumper had come off in one piece -- though it wasn't obvious from the rest of the wreck, which only stuck out from the tree about 3'. Analysts later worked out that the 'vette had been doing about 125.

It's all in how much space you're decelerating in -- a modern car might have 5' of crumple between the tip of the bumper and the torso (note -- leg situation is not good) inside the passenger compartment (nearly 3' of which is inside the passenger compartment, unless you're the driver).

There is something called a "book cipher". You and your correspondent each own a copy of a book, same edition. The cipher is expressed as two numerals, page number, and the number of the word on the page. As long as the opfor don't cotton on to which book you are using, it's practically unbreakable, since there is no algorithm for turning a word into cipher or vice versa. "10, 256" could be "is", and there will be a hundreds of other numeric combinations with the same value.
Of course if you, or your correspondent get raided, the spooks could go through your libraries, and eventually decrypt your old messages. But suppose you sent you messages from the public library via e-mail, and instead of books, used the homepages of various Web sites?

deceleration (which is WAY generous, I think) results in ~ 16G of

10 Gs is where just about all "trained" people blackout, "trained" meaning people accustomed to high-G forces, like fighter pilots.
The rough limit for the entire body is about 24Gs, and I think this indicates death, as the brain is the weak link. Individual body parts can tolerate higher loads.
This excludes extremely brief or extremely low-amplitude shocks.

.....and I should confess that I'm doing a large amount of SWAG-ing here, myself. My take-off point is a long-ago half-remembered article where a bunch of suicidal people had intentionally driven into bridge abutments as a way of ending it all.....but (this being from the early days of seat-belt adoption), those who had reflexively buckled-up when they got in the car had a significantly higher survival rate than those who hadn't. You might think that suicidal people accelerating into fixed objects would have negligible survival rates, but nooooooooo.....
And, certainly, hitting a brick wall at 70 mph is going to leave you seriously messed-up -- among other things, your feet have far less of an area to decelerate and someone's going to end up cuddling with the engine block -- but modern cars are quite tricksy about maximizing survivability.
Of course, the Obamacare Death Panels are probably going to mandate iron spikes in the dashboard so that your treatment and rehabilitation need not inconvenience The State.

Your chances of surviving a wreck are significantly greater if you're not the driver, 'cause the driver normally gets the steering wheel in the spleen.....which, itself, is a huge upgrade from 1970's cars, which typically impaled the driver with the non-collapsible steering column.

Just came to me (while brushing my teeth). The problem with my calculation.
The time-to-halt for that Suburban in the video was ~112 ms., for a sedan it would be slightly less because of shorter front end. Lets call it 100ms. *But*, at seventy miles per hour, which was the topic, that time would be half that, i.e., ~50ms. , which is one fourth my originally assumed 200ms. That would make the deceleration rate ~4 x 16 = 48G.

I should note that I recently put together a little "portfolio" of machining attempts and proof-of-concepts to meet with Arbalest. Besides doing a 1/8" hole through a 1/4"-wide piece of bar 1" thick, I also had a piece of plastic tapped for a machine screw and a tapped piece of aluminum holding a rectangular chunk of plastic turned-down to 1/4" and threaded with a die. The final piece was intended to show a tumbled finish, but was too large for my tumbler.....it was merely a piece of aluminum subjected to Googie [ http://tinyurl.com/5rw8pa ] treatment.
Taken as a whole, this portfolio shows both where I revere traditional machining and where I part from it. I intend to use tools in non-conventional ways on non-conventional materials......with the traditional precision, repeatability, and safety.

Well this person is absolutely correct, and that applies to all of us who have tried to live our lives as law abiding citizens and productive members of this civil society.
But the rule of law is fundamentally based on the premise that all men honor and are subject the the same set of rules, in fact this is what the 14th amendment, indeed the blindfold worn by Lady Justice, indicating that the law is blind and thus applicable to all men equally, regardless of who you are.
So when the state effectively says 'you must follow the law, but this other man, he does not' the entire thing falls down upon itself.
When the law is simply what those people in charge say it is from one day to another, then there *is* no law, this is tyranny.
But of course, you all know this.

I keep saying, all we need do is look at history. People who understand history understand these things; I don't need to explain them, if you understand history then you understand what I am talking about. If you do not know your history, I cannot explain it to you, your only choice is to learn it or suffer the fruits of your ignorance.
And this is how it is with society. The problem is that most of our fellow citizens, remain ignorant and have decided to choose the path set out for them by the state. They are told endlessly by their peers, by their teachers, by the media, and by so many others, that the state will fix these things if only they are allowed the power. And with an ignorance of history, they vote yes for unchecked state power.
No doubt most Russians in 1917 resigned themselves to things, telling themselves, 'how bad can this be?'.
This statist takeover of our government and our society is exactly the thing that the constitution was written to protect against! And it has worked for many many years, to the great benefit of our people and indeed the world.
But like anything built by man it is imperfect, and power is a slippery and subtle thing that some men take upon themselves and must have over others. And men at the individual level are often weak, and others very smart and ruthless. This is what happens.
As I said earlier, a terrible day indeed.
