Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.
Billy Wilder's dark masterpiece Sunset Boulevard actually began life as a comedy, but the director soon realized its central theme - the short memory of Hollywood and its brutal appetite - would have more resonance if played straight. One reason he came to this conclusion is because of an encounter he had with one of the pioneers of cinema. It seems that Wilder and his wife were having dinner one night in a swank nightspot with Mr and Mrs Sam Goldwyn. As they chatted, a man appeared at their table. He was tall and distinguished and his clothes - though they'd obviously seen better days - were well-brushed and pressed. The man wavered a bit before focusing on Goldwyn. "Here you are, you son of a bitch," he muttered. "When I should be making movies!" "Go away, you silly drunk," Mrs Goldwyn snapped. The man hesitated for a moment, then made an eloquent bow and faded back into the bustle of the room. "Who was that?" Wilder asked. A shaken Goldwyn had to take a long swallow of his drink. "That," he finally said, "was D.W. Griffith." Hope you all have a wonderful day. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at November 18, 2014 06:47 AM (zF6Iw) 59

I was thinking.... w/o the Gruber stuff coming out of nowhere... the GOP leadership was , IMO, perfectly willing to do jack-squat to actually repeal the ACA. Maybe eleventy-seven chess... but I think they were going to tell the new members to shut-the-hell-up about repeal and wait on the SCOTUS.. and then play around the edges.
I honestly think all of D.C. is in shock ... "trust us" is complete shit now with any non-koolaid drinking Obamabot. Big Government ... as a concept is laid bare... it's just a racket and always has been. I hope with teh furor over Grubes, the newly elected GOP will have the momentum to convince the old-timers to get aggressive and actually do some shin-kicking. That was supposed to end the open border and out of control immigration. It failed, but that was the original deal and intent that the Right bought into. Posted by: Yip at November 18, 2014 07:16 AM (84SRe) IIRC he was considering Paul Laxalt and Jack Kemp. Laxalt would've been a great successor. Reagan Amnesty??? It was authored by a Democrat and passed with Democrat votes. Reagan only failed to veto it. It was supposed to do the following:
required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status - NOT DONE made it illegal to hire or recruit illegal immigrants knowingly - NOT DONE legalized certain seasonal agricultural illegal immigrants MORE THAN DONE legalized illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously with the penalty of a fine, back taxes due, and admission of guilt; candidates were required to prove that they were not guilty of crimes, that they were in the country before January 1, 1982, and that they possessed minimal knowledge about U.S. history, government, and the English language. NOTHING DONE EXCEPT LEGALIZATON True Reagan should have known they were lying and vetoed it. Posted by: Vic at November 18, 2014 07:24 AM (u9gzs) 112

Thanks to all for advice last week on firing up our boiler. It was, as I surmised and y'all confirmed, a degraded thermocouple. Oxidized and pitted and just dirty. The $12.50 universal replacement at Home Depot was the exact choice of our CL handyman. (Craigslist post drew about 30 inquiries, ranging from $400 plus parts to $50 parts included. I insisted we pay for the part. And beers after the fact.) Two of our first-year housemates observed, along with me, so we got our money's worth in education. Everyone can relight the pilot with confidence and could replace thermocouple if they had to. Sadly, we'll all be gone before the issue arises again in this house.

Reagan's major "fault" was that he grew up in an age when even people who had different beliefs and agendas were, at least for the most part, honorable. You might not like what Democrats had in mind, but you could generally trust them to be honest and play by the rules. He was a decent man, and expected others to be decent. FDR was among the first to drop civility, though he maintained the pretense of same. By the time Reagan go to the White House, the liberals had figured out that lying wasn't really such a bad thing. Choom Boy has brought that idea to its pinnacle. Sadly, Reagan would probably have trusted President Historic FirstŠ to be -- and do -- what he claimed. At least at first... And this time, when he shuts down the government, keep it shut till you have your way and then hold public hearings to show how Obama selectively shut things down to hurt the voters intentionally. 21 Obama's illegal amnesty to include welfare which is also against the law.
______________________________- LOL. Yeah, like Obama cares about the law. The law that created the federal food stamp program specifically states that illegal aliens are not eligible to receive food stamps. Yet since he took office, Obama has been ignoring that part of the law and paying out billions of dollars' worth of food stamps, every year, to illegal aliens. Obama also spends millions of our tax dollars every year for Spanish-language ads to run in Mexico, informing people there that they can come to the U.S. and get "free" food stamps, and it doesn't matter if they're illegal aliens. The only thing congress has done about it is send Obama a letter. Also, the Obama IRS pays out billions every year in "tax credits" to illegal aliens -- even though it admits that many of the claimed credits are fraudulent. The House has passed a bill to stop the practice of paying tax credits to illegal aliens, but Harry Reid has kept the bill from ever being voted on in the Senate (and of course, Obama would probably veto it, even if it can pass the new Senate). Also, the Obama HHS admits that it pays out billions of dollars a year in Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits to just a few thousand illegal aliens. We can't afford to provide minimal medical care to our sick veterans -- people who fought for our country and who we promised to compensate with medical care -- but we CAN afford to pay out billions of dollars a year in expensive prescription drug benefits to a few thousand foreign moochers living illegally in our country. What is going on in this country is beyond sickening. Posted by: Senator Phil E. Buster at November 18, 2014 07:45 AM (2ruKl) 145

Big Apple Meat Market on Ninth, where all the firemen in T-shirts and suspenders buy wholesale for their house meals. The AMC movie theater on 42nd, which was, literally, rolled 100 feet west when the block was rebuilt. Tout Va Bien on 51st, affordable French food where tourists never go and full of charm. NCKate -- I use Arm & Hammer's Ultra Last. Clumps well, and has baking soda to kill the odor even if you forget to clean it and have a covered litter box. (In my case, mostly to keep the dog from the "kitty crunchies".)

Tidy Cats in the blue and yellow buckets clumps like crazy.
Avoid Tidy Cats in the red and yellow buckets. Not so much. Special Kitty for multiple cats (a WalMart brand) clumps like frikkin' concrete but needs added baking soda (half box per litter pan) for complete odor control. Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at November 18, 2014 08:16 AM (z899H) 198

Humorless "Hey, I knew those guys" clarification: The Fitzgerald was not sunk by ice. It was indeed the gales. And a rogue wave, but mostly hatch covers. The other side of bread, milk, and eggs: trying to get everything perishable used up before leaving for Florida. This year, add to that trying to guess whether there will be snow in the panhandle, and travel kit for passing through usually subtropical sunny south, now coated in rime and ice. Plus you never want to look silly by showing up on the Gulf with your parka on. People have died over this. I'm all for Floriding just before Northern Spring. That way, you have a 50-50 of coming back to crocuses and tulips. Best-laid plans, the target of my visit will be in Hawaii by then, ah well. The prospect of a week or two of artificial summer followed by coming back to Da Lakes for west snowy Christmas shopping traffic is practically depressing. Not as bad as not going, mind you... Automated litter box, the only way to go. Expensive at first, but pays for itself in time saved. I'll get the name brand of ours if anyone's interested. Bought it after rave reviews from friends, have never regretted it. The special litter can be bought at Wal-Mart. The litter s a dessicant, absorbs the moisture, kills the smell, solid waste is concentrated in a sealed container. When full, dump the reusable tray, or use a new disposable one. After changing it a couple times, you'll have it mastered.

Last year, when Thanksgiving was at my parents', my cousin and I were shooting my dad's BB gun off the porch at targets across the street. (Wooded lot) My girls came out and thought it was the coolest thing ever. So I got to introduce my girls to their first firearm. So yesterday a lefty friend posted on FB about calling her doctor's office to schedule a mammogram and being asked if she had recently travelled to west Africa or been in contact with anyone who had ebola. After relating this she added, "If only we were as concerned about ending childhood hunger as we are about ebola."
I didn't bother to respond, but I just thought, "What the heck? Can't we do both - screen for ebola AND be concerned about childhood hunger?" The lack of logical thinking among leftists is a huge problem - you can't even have a conversation with them. Posted by: biancaneve at November 18, 2014 08:49 AM (6Turu) 300
Cub Scout Shoot-Out. That right there is effin crazy.
A Turkey Shoot is a semi-competitive (like a poker run) non-bird shooting event, sponsored by trapshooting clubs in the late autumn/early winter, from coast to coast. It's the least bloodthirsty form of shooting sport there is, outside USAS. Any kid who lives within 20 miles of open country has certainly heard of one. A shoot-out is a fight to the death between human beings. Great name change. Posted by: Stringer Davis at November 18, 2014 08:49 AM (xq1UY) 301

One of my not so bold predictions from 2008 was that if Obama was elected race relations in this country would take a huge step backwards. Everything Obama has done seems to have borne that out. All he and his administration care about is dividing people along racial lines and pitting them against each other. He had some short term success with this strategy, like getting elected twice, but he has done some serious long term damage to the country. One of the many truly sad things about Obama's legacy, if there any left alive to discuss it, will be the absolute debacle he (and Eric "My People" Holder) made of race relations. My observation over many years was that the country was settling into a workable norm, not perfect, but very workable with respect to a multi-racial populace. This is obviously no longer true, and I am not at all sure we will be able to put the evil genie back in the bottle, at least not without a major cost to our fragile society. race relations. In the space of eight years, I've gone from, "people are people" to "I don't want to have anything to do with any black person, ever." -- What I have been seriously shocked at is how much, as a white person, I'm truly hated by blacks. It never occurred to me before the election of King Putt. But by all accounts, it seems pretty true. What I don't know (and maybe don't want to know) is if those feeling have always been there, or if they've been worked into a manufactured froth of bubbling hatred because of Obama and the divisive progressives. I don't like turkey. Year after year, I've tried selling alternatives. Wild and domestic duck, domestic goose (too much prejudice against wild goose), leg of lamb, and various changes on the tur-duck-hen theme (I like to make them inside-out, for instance halves of turkey breast inside Cornish gamers, inside a large duck).
I cook pretty hard making sure it's goor-may quality, plus, Pree-zentation. They gag it down, but, no joy. People want what they want -- or, what Big Turkey tells them they want. Faced with an actual wild turkey from olden times, most modern holiday diners wouldn't recognize it. Or want any. Might have BB's! Posted by: Stringer Davis at November 18, 2014 09:01 AM (xq1UY) 324

So we all complain but do nothing, and nothing changes.
I've never been to a protest in my life; never been on strike, never participated in any sort of civil disobedience. But now I watch the country I love, the greatest country in the history of the planet, disappear into a socialist sinkhole. Every visible treasure to feed the unlimited demands of this new and improved brave new utopia is allocated by the Gruber elites and redistributed by our political elites. Morality is considered an ancient anachronism and unscientific so any means necessary is acceptable as long as utopia is not yet or there remain some unredistributed treasures laying about. We watch. We are powerless. We seethe. And the problems grow, not diminish. Somebody pass the ammunition. And, I like Methuselinks best.
