Early Morning Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Good morning.

This is something new to me. Am I the last to hear of it?

It might be worth checking out.

And, for your debating pleasure...

Make it a great day.

College is necessary for such things as the hard sciences, business and all things practical.

Sociology is not only worthless but destructive.

9 I also think that some of the pre-med education that students have to go through may not be all that valuable to a medical degree.

Some people I think have an aptitude for medicine and yet may be quite hopelessly lost in something like chemistry classes.

Just a thought.

13 Greetings from Eastern MA, where it is currently 29 F. At least teh snowstorms haven't shown up...yet.

I have a request: pleasepleaseplease, for G*d's sake, can this be a Day Without Gruber? I'm sure some new revelation of his eeeeeevil machinations will soon appear, just as I'm sure Ace will be getting his Grube on regularly during the week, but I still feel the need to point out that this guy's place in the overall scheme of things is tiny, tiny, tiny. It's his boss, the ever-popular Choom Boy, who is calling the shots.

President Historic First© doesn't get any less dangerous when we are distracted by the Squirrels and Shiny Stuff he sets out as diversions. Nor is his buddyroo, Holder, who apparently won't call for the death penalty in the trial of four cop-killing thugs (see: Breitbart story).

When the so-called opposition is sweating the small stuff, the Bad Guys can skoosh 'em like bugs.

15 The progressives are trying to hang on to their social status since they have proven to be incompetent idiots. Since progressivism is overpopulated with advanced degrees, "granting" the lower status to the baccalaureate is mighty nice of them.

Posted by: Lester at November 16, 2014 07:22 AM (2UPXV)

16
So the potential field of fascist candidates seems to be Hilary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Luis Gutierrez and Bernie Sanders.

If SCOAMF could barely fake being "centrist" (whatever that means), I don't see any of the above being able to fake it at all without puking on their shoes when they speak of "American Exceptionalism," and that includes Hilary.

Despite the past 6 years of pain and suffering, the GOP does not have the ability to connect the dots between what Americans have experienced with the party and ideology that caused it. That's because they have been part of the problem since the Bush administration. Americans think something's wrong with the country or "the system" or even Obama as a leader rather than liberalism.

If we manage to defeat the GOP-e in the primaries and get a Ted Cruz, Mike Pence or Scott Walker as a candidate, I don't think any of the freak show Demokrats have a chance.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at November 16, 2014 07:23 AM (CMkNk)

17 Serial seems like a bad idea. The investigation is open. I have also found that most media cover crime with a total leftard bent, i.e., every guy on death row is innocent!!!!!! There is a big one coming up that I have mentioned before, Rodney Reed. It will be like Troy Davis on speed.

Just as a reminder, I seem to recall a number of leading leftist luminaries over the past few years whose credentials it turns out were, shall we say, faked.

Can't remember the specifics, probably because the MFM as usual swept it under the rug.

My last employer was notoriously credentialist: Old time, good old boys club trying to look like a 21st century firm. Very, very old industry. Doesn't care much for women, blacks, and old people either but has learned (through payouts) that they can't wear those facts so on-their-sleeves as in the prior century.

They had employees that would remain for decades through 70 and 80-hour weeks, skipping vacations, and working sick from their hospital beds and then, the moment the economy would slump, they'd hire a bunch of kids straight out of college and dump some of the old folks. Of course, the moment the economy turned around the newbies would haul ass because, HEY!, they have Ivy-league degrees and they aren't about to work a 70-hour week. Then the company would suck up to the old folks and diehards again.

They don't want to BE a better company but they desperately want to look like one on paper. They think killing off those with all the knowledge, but lacking a degree, will do that for them.

23 Stupid question.

Now that the National Cathedral has allowed Muslim services inside the cathedral itself, under fundamentalist Islamic teaching, does the national Cathedral become the property of Islam?

AFAIK, Muzzie dudes "own" the Cathedral now. Once a mosque, always a mosque, and they'll probably be pushing to get a muezzin up on the top floor to howl out their call to prayer. You know, the one Choom Boy thinks is so friggin' beautiful.

I would consider the move to host Islam foolish, but I think the intent was far more evil. Our religious "leaders" know how Muzzies work, but they choose to ignore the truth in the name of "fellowship."

They will be back in the Cathedral on the next Muzzie holiday, and will soon thereafter be squeezing out the Christians.

Perhaps... I'm not sure I'd rely on a doctor unable to comprehend basic chemistry. While I regard the art of being a doctor to be more than just academic skill, there are subjects that highlight/develop a doctor's ability to analyze and assess.

A failure to master certain subjects, IMO, puts a potential doctor's abilities in the doubtful column... we already have too many doubtful people running about as it is.

I do not have a 4 year degree, I'm a damn fossil, and I'm capped out on the pay scale because I know what the hell I'm doing thanks to years of experience on the job in the IT field. 4 year degree's signify you were able to put up with the teachers BS and get by with enough book learning to get out of school, it does not mean you know a damn thing in the real world.

Maybe, maybe not. The whole IRS thing may or may not have been on the direct orders of SCOAMF. The point is, the IRS and 99.9% of the bureaucracy IS SCOAMF. When he blasted the SCOTUS at the SOTU speech, that's all they needed to hear.

Don't get me wrong; I think that Obama knew about it all and gave the orders if not the OK if it wasn't his idea. I'm just saying that a movement is sometimes bigger than the leader itself and that they may have taken it on themselves to please their overlord.

The prime example of that now sits in the White House.

And just try explaining to them that half his Columbia degree was done at Occidental and both his Columbia degree and all of Harvard degree were exercises in affirmative action. 70 One of the hardest things for most new tweeters is getting enough followers they have some latitude on commenting to people not following them....

***

Each of us starts out with on follower. Then two.

I have seen time and time again that it is those who really put themselves out there that grow the largest followings.

For others, there are phases.

1. OMG someone followed me! I'm going to follow them back!

2. Repeat step 1 a couple a of hundred times out of a need for symmetry and politeness.

3. Start being more selective about whom you follow but worry like hell that if you don't follow them they'll drop you, ad they might.

4. Start getting some retweets on Twitchy and from the big hitters. New followers come and go.

5. Stop giving a rat's ass about symmetry and in-kind follows and follow who you like.

6. Stop caring if your opinion might run off some of those followers and let it fly!

All in all, it seems to be long-term growth of something like 2 to 3 followers for every one follower lost.

Birth control sunscreen?

Chemicals that are found in cosmetics, such as shampoo, sunscreen, moisturizer and the like, may lead to infertility in men, new research suggests.

The preliminary study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health's Wadsworth Center in New York reveals that benzophenone (BP) type ultraviolet (UV) filters, which include about 29 chemicals, are found in sunscreens as well as other cosmetic products.

You know, there was a time before Medicare, Medicaid and the crazy malpractice regulations and a litigious culture etc., when people paid their bills out of pocket because they were relatively inexpensive.

Insurance was only to cover catastrophic illness. Hence the concept of an "insurance policy" in case of disaster to insure your money. Not to pay every time you get a tummy ache.

Tort reform and abolish Medicare/Medicaid.

But, no. Big government is good and you better not take away my entitlements because, entitled!

Sheesh.

This right here is the thing that has long puzzled me most about "liberals:" They can advocate the grossest levels of violence against people who don't agree with them, but if the tables happened to be turned, they curl up in little balls and whimper. They can't stand bloodshed and mayhem...unless they commit it.

I have said some nasty things about Choom Boy during the last six years -- as I did about every President from JFK through Dubya (well, no, not Reagan) -- but I have never, ever advocated causing any of them physical injury. I haven't even felt (or expressed) hatred for them. I would, however, be more than thrilled to see President Historic First© severely mistreated, as in "sent off to pay a decades-long visit to Sheriff Joe." I have always believed that committing major crimes should lead directly to severe punishment.

But hate and physical harm? Those are the tools of liberals.

Whatever the subject, completing the bachelors degree shows the ability to set a goal and the discipline to achieve it over time and the harder the subject matter, the more informative a proxy the degree is.

Does the degree have a monopoly on that? Of course not. Can it be shown in other ways? Certainly. Success in the military being one example.

But an employer with one job and 500 resumes has to sort the pile somehow.

128 All this talk about BA's (vs BS) degrees has forced me to chime in. My degree (first), is a BA (major Geology / minor Philosophy) -- my core in Geology (through following a BA) took me down a path toward business as opposed to field work. That said, I did take additinoal classes (more BS in nature) in areas that fascinated me (Structural, Sed/Strat, Geomorphology, etcetera)...in short, I liked the flexibility and also knew I was heading toward the business side. As for the Philosophy minor again...I just liked the subject(s) and enjoyed arguing my points against the convention. I followed my BA with an MBA in...Finance. For me it was all about having a rounded education and granted, I was in college from 79-85...it was (I believe) quite different from today.

Oh yeah...last thoughts...my corporate career was spent almost entirely in sales and I worked in 'big oil' for 2 years -- bulk of years were spent in publishing then hardware/software. And now?...I work on houses (8 years) after tiring of the corporate grind...renovations chiefly.

Excellent movie. Great plot, acting, direction, script. And the relativistic time stuff seemed to work or at least was consistent.

Some people on this here blog were complaining that the sound was too loud and muddled but I saw it at an Atmos-installed theater-

and the sound while loud was crystal-clear. Dialogue too.

Probably the problem is that they mix the sound for state of the art sound systems and less than state of the art sound system don't have enough separate speakers. This is a guess.

If so, they need to make a simpler "crap mix" for LTSOTA theaters.

Anyway great visuals, great sound - well worth seeking out an IMAX or XD theater for this one.

Trouble is, of course, is that it's still there.

205 Someone help me out here with this shirtstorm thing.

Who exactly are these leftwing nuts mad at? Sure, they're mad at the guy for wearing the shirt, but why does that shirt exist? In fact, why are women objectified in our society at all?

Pretty sure that didn't happen because of rightwing Catholics such as myself. It wasn't people of my ilk who encouraged the sexual revolution and continue trying to destroy our social mores and values today. Now, that doesn't mean I'm offended by the shirt, because I like to live and let live, but let's just say it didn't become an acceptable piece of attire because of my efforts.

So I just want to know. What does feminism want? Should women be thoroughly respected and adored (in which case, I think Catholicism is as feminist as it gets), or should they be free to desecrate their bodies in any way they please?

Someone please try to figure out what SlutWalks wants. To boot, since it seems like they want stricter treatment of rapists, try to figure out how it differs from anything your average rightwinger wants.

I'm sure this question will never be answered.

J.J., I thought "Interstellar" was pro-American and pro-Human Exceptionalism, i.e., we're worth saving as a species. The cause for climate change was never explained as AGW or other leftist tripe, it just...happened.

As for the sound quality, I went to an IMAX showing and the sound was fine. The volume was not at "Scanners" levels.

Life is short...so true -- therefore it is best to have as much fun as possible along the way. Plus all of this keeps me young and I really do enjoy my work, my clients and work in general. But the best part?....I can now fire those people (clients) that I don't like -- so satisfying and it was impossible to do in my old life...in corporate, those decisions were never solely mine.

For as long as it lasts, which may be only a few more months, I'm making twice as much money consulting as my best friend who has a doctorate in management. Actually, I'm making more than most of my degree'd friends.

Frankly, it's been a big confidence builder to have a multi-million dollar company look at a gal with no degree and believe she can streamline their processes and reduce costs. This, based solely upon what the execs have seen me accomplish at my former, unappreciative employer.

Posted by: EC at November 16, 2014 08:59 AM (doBIb)

Well, the wormhole was kind of a MacGuffin.

The action of the movie took place because it was there.

The movie wasn't concerned so much with the who put it there.

The wormhole enabled them to find a solution to an intractable problem, a bit like a deus ex machina as well.

So, the wormhole was a MacGuffin/deus ex machina hybrid.

A deus ex MacGuffin if you will.

And Dean's mistress was one of those 'ladies' in that binder. Everything else Liddy's Plumbers did was secondary to that primary task.

More SPOILERy STUFF:

Well, not exactly.

That's really the point of the Mann incident, I think.

That there is free will and despair. Mann gave into despair and chose to destroy the mission on the chance of saving his skin.

McConnaughey's character had his moment of despair but chose to fight to complete the mission and save his children and the people of Earth.

He fought to figure out how he could communicate, what he had the ability to do in such an extreme circumstance not knowing if it would or could work.

Really, I hope this movie ignites that kind of fire in the imagination and courage of the youth of today.

Instead of the endless sour navel gazing in the dirt represented by #shirtstorm and other such leftard, nihilistic nonsense.
