The conversation the left doesn't want to have but cannot figure out how to get out of. Ignoring such conversations has worked in the past. Will it work now? With the statute in question coming up in the news for other reasons? How can you tout its virtues when this is still out there? Not impossible, but difficult.
BTW - In calling the American people stupid and that they needed to be lied to so that the law would pass Dr. Gruber insults the Democrats and the Left. Republicans and conservatives were opposed to the law and never went along with it. Ordinary apolitical Americans were and are opposed to it. ObamaCare is the action that woke up the Tea Party. The only ones who supported ObamaCare - and thus the only ones the lying convinced - were Democrats and progressives. "Progressives are gullible and easily led." - Dr. J. Gruber. Gruber has already admitted lying. What else could he say that would be "worse?" "Hey, that John Roberts? We totes blackmailed his ass to get this thing passed!" "Don't worry about the GOP. But as there is no opposition party in the US, and no press, and a degraded populace and collapsed civic culture, no surprise that such idiocy can actually be allowed to damage the country. Still waiting for the definitive data to declare "it's dead, Jim" on the US. People speculate about what-ifs and worst cases on many subjects. Well here is one in real life. Millions of people - almost entirely the more responsible, successful, and self-sufficient - have been administered a body blow, out of the blue, having a needlessly expensive but otherwise taken-for-granted part of their financial life (health insurance) essentially ripped away from them. They have, suddenly, been confronted with serious financial hardship (material hits to their cash flow and savings plans), and threatened with financial penalties if they *don't* submit and pour more $$$$ down the rathole, for inferior coverage. Sure, 2010, and 2014. But so what? And this idiot was re-elected in 2012? If the insane, un-American, ruinous final govt. destruction of health care finance doesn't generate some actual backlash - in actual law and policy, not at the ballot box - then there will be no reason to think that the controls are attached to the control surfaces any longer. Posted by: MSM at November 13, 2014 01:22 PM (ABcz/) Pssst, you left a stinky sock on too long. Anyway, here's what's going to happen in that case. - The subsidies on the federal-run exchanges will be deemed unconstitutional, technically because that's what the law says, but really because the intent and goal all along is to make the states the bagmen for the exchange horseshit. - However, for the purpose of the Roberts Memorial PlaceboCare Non-Insurance - The "GOP" will do what they always do when handed power after a massive expansion of the welfare state and expand it further by authorizing subsidies on the federal-run exchanges. The main takeaway from the midterms is this:
The conservatarian "alternative" newsstream managed to defeat the MSM. This is a major social earthquake. We have not been able to unseat the Gramscian cryptocommunists who have taken over almost the entirely of the mainstream media, and so they retain an iron grip on it, with the attendant water-carrying for Obama, embargoing of stories that hurt the liberal cause, and constant relentless "framing the narrative" from a Marxist vantage point. However, we've created or acquiring or amplified so many alternate streams that a significant proportion of the electorate "got the message" anyway (i.e. perceived current events through a conservatarian filter). The alternate streams include: 1. Drudge 2. Right-wing talk radio 3. Fox News on cable 4. Conservative blogosphere 5. Anti-progressive Twitter, Facebook and social media. 6. A growing number of conservative and libertarian news sites and magazines 7. A burgeoning number of "local reporters" for local TV stations that sneak in anti-progressive stories. 8. Other stuff that probably eludes me at the moment. All of these combined created an "end-around" to the MSM. And continues to do so. Thus, the Gruber story CAN'T be embargoed by the MSM. They no longer hold the information monopoly. Posted by: zombie at November 13, 2014 01:49 PM (K4YiS) 273

Video!
http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/13/politics/tapper-gruber/index.html [...]In this fourth video, Gruber's language is not as stark as in three previous instances, but his suggestion that Obamacare proponents engaged in less-than-honest salesmanship remains. "Barack Obama's not a stupid man, okay?" Gruber said in his remarks at the College of the Holy Cross on March 11, 2010. "He knew when he was running for president that quite frankly the American public doesn't actually care that much about the uninsured....What the American public cares about is costs. And that's why even though the bill that they made is 90% health insurance coverage and 10% about cost control, all you ever hear people talk about is cost control. How it's going to lower the cost of health care, that's all they talk about. Why? Because that's what people want to hear about because a majority of American care about health care costs." [...] Gruber said the measures in the bill that attempt to lower costs constitute a "spaghetti approach" -- throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. And while preferable to the status quo, Gruber said he could offer no guarantee that any of the measures would work. What are the Obamacare trade-offs "The only way we're going to stop our country from being a latter day Roman Empire and falling under its own weight is getting control of the growth rate of health care costs," he said. "The problem is we don't know how." Experts "know what the problem is," he said. "Our providers are paid enormously high. In the 1950s surgeons are middle class guys like professors...Now they live on the Hamptons, the Cape, they're like investment bankers. Gruber said attempts to control costs in a real way were politically untenable. "The problem is if we just say, 'Look, let's just cut our spending,' well, the problem is you're going to then eat into what the rich guys are getting that they're liking. And that doesn't go so well. That's going to be pretty hard politically. That's why no one has a politically feasible way right now to bend the cost curve, it just doesn't exist." Politicians could suggest capping costs but "you wouldn't win many elections." [...] Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit, aka Beth at November 13, 2014 02:01 PM (4df7R) 335

well, that excerpt (from the "new" video?) from Gruber is a good illustration of this "economist"'s economic illiteracy. Gee, nobody knows how to lower costs? Really, airhead? How about the only way costs have ever been - and always been - lowered, on this planet, with humans, engaged in trade and commerce and services? Uh huh. Competition and innovation. End of story. Health insurance finance has been made into a frankenstein by disconnecting prices from consumbers. Duh. By state govt. interference, by federal govt. interference. There is absolutely nothing about health care or its finance that doesn't lend itself to the cost-containment dynamics seen in every other market for private goods. Oh - and the bit about doctors not making more than professors a while back? WTF? Hey, idiot, look at the compensation for academics (from K thru university) over the last 50 years. Now compare that to physicians' incomes. Which one has grown nearly vertically - in fact, a key driver of the single worst inflationary sub-sector in the American economy, that of university "education"? Uh huh. THIS is what I was talking about. Utterly illiterate as to both general principles and specifics of the sector under discussion. Point of order. You can say that about the average liberal voter, not so much the average conservative voter. Voting conservative means you need to have an understanding of history, current events, math, economics and a host of issues big enough to fill Kim Kardashian's ass. Voting liberal just means you have a Pavlovian brain that forces you to vote for a liberal when you hear words like racist, sexist, LGBT or some other victim terminology. Off (but it's really all the same)Topic: Russia sure seems to have airplanes to spare, all of a sudden. I know I know, it's because their version of Davis-Monthan is still all on the flight line, but still I sure wish we had those other few hundred F-22's, and the other two aircraft carriers with their air components. And, stuff. Captains, majors, maintainers, Marines. Oh, and those warheads we beat into plowshares.
That said, a front-line air superiority or fleet defense fighter is not the ideal tool for tracking antique aircraft. They're always having to break off to refuel, and we don't have any tankers anymore either. It's damn tricky flying those things "up on the step," dallying with the stall speed as little bits of contra-rotating prop fly off Bear. Might have to put out a call for the Civil Air Patrol. Actually heard Karl Rove say last night in an interview on Fox regarding the Gruber deal that we should expect the GOP to pass several bills in January and February whittling at the edges of Obamacare in an attempt to make meaningful changes to the law, then a bill to repeal the entire deal, leaving just in place the improvements to health care insurance, access, etc. that the Jan. bills would enact.
He did say "repeal". I heard it with my own ears. So, obviously, repeal is being at least considered and written up. He also said that he felt the Democrats would be on board with this by that point...well, we'll see. Nancy P probably won't remember what the ACA is at that point. Posted by: Jen at November 13, 2014 02:15 PM (hjTr7) 390
The conundrum with the Gruber tales is that the vast majority of whom he speaks (i.e. the stupid voters) are too stupid/lack the self-awareness to realize he is talking about *them* (see, for example, VOX and other liberals defending Gruber's comments). And as delicious as they're lack of self-awareness is re: entertainment for us who were never stupid enough to be fooled by the ACA, it also means that the stupid people will keep supporting it and Obama and the Dems, etc. Basically the status quo remains unchanged. Those who were stupid enough to keep supporting Obama after the lie of "if you like your plan you can keep your plan period) was exposed by REALITY will keep on doing so.

An important point needs to be made here. The MSM keeps saying that Gruber is calling All voters stupid. But that is untrue. Conservatives and Libertarians weren't falling for the BS claims made by the Obamacare pushers. Posted by: rhomboid at November 13, 2014 02:10 PM (afQnV) This is a point I often make. It is government interference in the Health care industry that is primarily responsible for the costs being so out of control. Because people are so disconnected from paying the actual costs themselves, there is no personal incentive on the part of most people to control or contain costs. The idea of Medical Insurance was heavily boosted by the government trying to institute wage controls way back when. Companies tried to come up with other ways to compensate them and so they started offering medical insurance. Not today, but yesterday here saw repeated the critical non-fact that there were around 30 million uninsured. * Only financially, voluntarily "uninsured" even matter as a concern of public policy * The numbers in that category are a small fraction of 30 million - possibly as low as 5 - 8 million, based on Census and other real data * Any increase in "coverage" under the disastrous ACA is merely an expansion of Medicaid - nothing new, and nothing positive, for many reasons * There was never the slightest justification for doing anything more than handing out vouchers to the 5 - 8 million involuntarily financially uninsured to buy existing plans - exactly the approach taken as part of the "safety net" for food (food stamps) and housing (Sec 8 vouchers). * Even the pre-existing condition nonsense is baseless. First, "covering" pre-existing conditions is not insurance, it's welfare - which is fine, but needs to be accurately described in order to address properly. Second, there already has been large-scale experimentation with high-risk pools etc, most of which have been failures. In any case it's a statistically and financially tiny sub-set of the population, "solving" that issue should not materially affect the overall picture. But these are just f***ing obvious, basic considerations. Can't expect them to enter the public debate, even from "opponents" of disastrous unconstitutional unsustainable socialized health care finance. "Russia sure seems to have airplanes to spare, all of a sudden. I know I
know, it's because their version of Davis-Monthan is still all on the flight line" Ukraine have a completely intact Tu-95 that they have left over from the Soviet years, which the Russians forgot to take home. For sale to highest bidder! Special deal! Airworthiness, maintenance, spares, um, well, those are the bidder's problem. "That said, a front-line air superiority or fleet defense fighter is not the ideal tool for tracking antique aircraft. They're always having to break off to refuel, and we don't have any tankers anymore either." There is a trend to build mini-AWACs aircraft out of bizjets. I have argued in the past for making armed patrol aircraft in the same way. There will be a ton of older smaller regional jets coming out of airline service soon, with plenty of life left in the frames. 200-series Canadairs and what have you. Tort reform helps, and is worth doing, but it's not the major driver of costs. Name any other major service consumed by the public where they don't know the cost of what they consume. Hell, the "providers" often don't even know the cost of what they provide. THIS is the North Korean insanity created by disconnecting prices from consumers (both final and intermediate consumers). Simply removing the barriers to real health insurance (which still existed not that long ago, and was not even a major cost issue for most) would "create" such bounty that "covering" the uninsured would be a trifle. End state-level cartel dynamics, end mandates, remove other regulator barriers to entry and competition, watch in amazement. Some here may remember what air travel was like (cost, density of services, etc.) prior to deregulation, vs. after. The difference in health care finance would be just as dramatic. No, we tossed out a lot of English law concepts because they were completely incompatible with the principles for which this nation was founded. Foremost among them was this theory that the King owned you from the moment of your birth simply because you were born on his land. This policy makes perfect sense for a MONARCHY. It is Idiocy squared for a Republic. I will point out that there were over 100,000 children born to British Loyalists after July 4, 1776. Both the US Government and the English Crown recognized them as British subjects despite the fact they were born on American soil. I will also point out that James Madison's very own government refused to recognize the US Citizenship of a man born in Charleston South Carolina after 1776 because his father had not yet been naturalized. The main takeaway from the midterms is this: The conservatarian "alternative" newsstream managed to defeat the MSM. Thus, the Gruber story CAN'T be embargoed by the MSM. They no longer hold the information monopoly. ---------------------------------------------- Actually the first big win was pantsing "Gunga Dan" Rather on trying to make up stuff on Dubya back in '04. That was heap big scalp for the Conservative Alternative Media (CAM), and the LSM has yet to acknowledge it in public. Now, I will say that most of the Democrat failure this year was due to Obummer, and some lame 'Rat election strategery. However it was the LSM to point it out, but they had already thrown away their objectivity to be shills guards for Obummer. So CAM stepped in to do the job for them, and remind everyone every day what a mess Obummer and his Congressional lackeys had made, and how they could not be trusted to do the job right. CAM got a break this time since Obummer seems to have stopped caring if his party can win another election with or without his help, but repetition on a theme can help a lot. And compared to the LSM standard propaganda, now wearing thin due to 6 years of bad results, the CAM allegations getting picked up drew attention, and comparison to how things were in The World, as opposed to inside the Beltway.
