That fallacy never made any sense to me in the first place.
At least the "natural conservative" people are just deluded.

The "shore up SS" people made entirely contradictory arguments. They argued simultaneously that the illegals were paying SS and not receiving it (since they were paying using fraudulent SSNs) then argued that making them legal would shore up SS.

Seems to me if that's your plan to save SS (and it's a shitty plan) then you should get lots and lots of illegals using fraudulent SSNs, not make them legal (and presumably eligible for SS at some point.)

The Unlikeliest Winner

Tacherra didn't let the uphill fight faze him. With limited resources, he capitalized on his strengths, says California-based Republican consultant Carl Fogliani: a personal understanding of local issues and his likeable personality. He realized that the best way to get the word out and win over voters was to interact with as many people as possible across the district.

No event was too small. "I was stopping by family picnics in the park, neighborhood barbecues," Tacherra says. Eventually, he began showing up at Democrat-friendly events, such as labor-union meetings -- much to Costa's irritation when the two ran into each other at one.

"He told me it was like him showing up at tea-party events," Tacherra recalls. "I told him he's more than welcome to go to those."

He was vocally annoyed by his opponent showing up to talk to people of his district. This is how they think. It is "my" event. "Our event." Not the people's.

Re: Philae, Rosetta

I grew up in the 60s, so my experience was of ever onrushing progress. Space, spacewalks, orbit the moon, land on the freaking Moon! It was like everything was always going to get more awesome.

Then you get the small beer Carter era space shuttle. Oh boy, we can put a commuter bus in space. It did launch and tend the Hubble, so there's still something cool. And now we don't have independent access to space, we need the stinkin' Russkies until our own entrepreneurs sort things out.

I think it's pretty awesome that the Europeans landed a porn-bot on a freaking moving comet. And they have a super-conducting supercollider. We snark about euroweenies all the time, but they're doing cool stuff on an order of magnitude that only we used to be able to do.

And we're not doing much of it anymore.

That's right, Bill Maher thinks the same America that elected Obama President in 2008 and re-elected him in the face of poor Democrat polling in 2012 is now racist. 59 The problem with our foreign Non-policy is that Obama has roughly 2,000 aids and advisers, and all of them think they are the boss. So what we get while Barky the Magnificent Turd is out playing golf is policies that are all over the map. The only thing consistent is that they reward our enemies and punish our allies.

60 Thank you for the link on countries with no militaries. I was pondering the other day how many countries don't have any military at all but I was too energy efficient to go look. I knew Iceland didn't but I am surprised by Costa Rica. I thought Liechtenstein had some kind of small force but apparently not.

So there's the guy in CA and the woman in NY who pulled out surprise victories by engaging in, get this, good old fashioned retail politics and by focusing on representing their district instead of nationalizing their campaigns. Now that's interesting indeed.

I agree on Wal-Mart having gone way downhill on making sure their stores are not a mess. The local big Wal-Mart always looks like it's in the middle of receiving shipments that have been dumped in the middle of the aisle. There is a new neighborhood Wal-Mart that opened near me and that is much better but that may be because it's brand new.

Army Cuts Fall on Officers Who Began as Enlisted

Faced with declining budgets, the Army, the largest of the services, cut its force this year by 1,188 captains and 550 majors, many who were clearly intending on making a career of the military. More are expected to lose their jobs next year.

An internal Army briefing showed the majority of captains being forced out had no blemishes on their records. The briefing also showed that officers who had joined the Army as enlisted soldiers, then endured the demanding process required to rise into the officer corps, were three times as likely as captains who graduated from West Point to be forced to retire.

That story about Lizzy Warren (had an ax; used it to propose new tax) being the next great hope for the Demonrat party is just further proof of what I've been saying since 2010: the Demonrats claim to be the party of youth, but there's not one among their leadership who isn't a legitimate political fossil. We have the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, and she's a Republican. We have the first black woman Republican elected to Congress, and she's still young and ready to roll. We have Ted Cruz and Mike Lee and Trey Gowdy and Tim Scott and Scott Walker and a dozen other quality Congresscritters, all of them below the age of 60.

But ours is the party of old white guys? Really? When the Demonrats are seriously considering running a fake indian, a stroke-prone ex-First Lady, and a gibbering imbecile VP for Preezy?

Boy BFF's wife used to be pretty high up in the food chain at Wal-Mart and one of the reasons she left is because she was caught in the middle of the cut staffing to the bone but we need staff to keep up the quality of the stores war. Pretty sure "I'm going to take control of the bureaucracy and use it to kill you and your kind" isn't exactly a logical argument.

But I see your point and still submit: if that's the case then lets stop wasting time.

The liberals will always win on appeals to emotion. You can't connect a lot of conservatism to an emotional argument.

To make an analogy, consider my area: animal research ethics. PETA and their ilk have the emotional upper hand, because they'll simply run a serious of ads of dogs and cats with tubs and surgical incisions and say "SEE BAD."

The actual import of science is remarkably hard to convey with that same emotional impact. (And even if you show a kid with cancer who was cured because of science and animal research it's too many stepped removed from the cats and dogs to have an effect.)

One would think. And yet sob stories drive our political landscape. People see a person in trouble and they vote to marshal the power to government to fix it (well, in theory, obviously government can't fix jack shit.)

There's probably some cognitive dissonance in here, where the people always assume *they'll* be left alone (and someone else will be conscripted into doing the actual helping/paying for the help.)

Plus I'm not sure "leave me the hell alone" is all that lizard brain. We naturally form groups, friends, families, etc. etc. The great trick of the progressive was convincing people those groups should be held together with the force of government.

Someday we'll actually be able to have a discussion over whether we let police jump to lethal force waaaaayyyyy to quickly.

But as long as every police shooting is a chance to start a revolution that's not going happen.

228 Took my dad to Applebee's for his free Veterans Day dinner. A guy stood up and asked for everyone's attention; announced that he was a national-level VFW officer, had been to veterans affairs all over the country, and this was the first restaurant he'd seen that set the special table for POW/MIA. And everyone thought that was nice, and worthy of comment.

Then he did a 10-minute tirade on how he's the Pro from Dover on filing special disability claims, and if any vets had any problems with their applications, here's his number. Enthusiasm slowly waned.

I feel rather strongly that "every soldier is a victim" is Vietnam-era propaganda, a bold-faced attempt to Cloward-Piven the VA, and generally an excuse machine. Implicit in the new fad of "thank you for your service" is a strong unspoken element of "oh you poor dear." You can almost hear the "boy." Long-term, not a good thing.

257 This may be of interest, or-

of no interest to you, but-

Kindle Daily Deals has:

"Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails: From the Alamagoozlum to the Zombie 100 Rediscovered Recipes and the Stories Behind Them"

for $2.99.

It's a good cocktail book and a fun read.

Lately, some of the liquor companies have been bringing back some of these "lost" spirits or making good replacements for them - so yeah, you can make these cocktails.

It's a lot of fun to compare modern versions of cocktails with the originals.

For instance the modern dry martini with "the Martinez"- they're almost totally different.

I prefer the Martinez...but to make it properly, you need "Old Tom Gin".

Things like that are in the book.

Anywho, if that's the kind of thing you like, this is the kind of thing you will like.

Philae update. They're boned

All the anchoring systems mf'd. Lander bounced to roughly 1 km altitude and traveled horizontally 1 km. Now Philae is in a sort of pit, being overshadowed by a cliff. Solid wall less than a meter away. Limited solar power to recharge batteries, so probe will go dark.

Not sure to be done now with only two feet on the ground. Still being determined whether or not a hop should be tried to get away from the pit and wall where Philae is stuck now.

Initial touchdown triggered ground sequence for instruments despite
the fact Philae had lifted off again. Instrument kept with 'ground
sequence', even when not on surface. So that science package got nothing but vacuum.

274 Crackers came from cracking whips, but not at slaves. At cattle. They were cowboys. in Florida.

http://tinyurl.com/q7afjuf

Frederic Remington immortalized them in writing and in his paintings. The painting in the aricle above is called "The Cracker Cowboy." One may note that it was painted in 1895, some number of years after the demise of slavery.

The subject of that painting is one Bone Mizell. He was called Bone because his middle name was Bonaparte, his father admired Napoleon.

An excerpt from another article:

He could just as gracefully flick a fly off a cow's rump with his 18-foot bullwhip, never raising a hair on the poor dumb beast. Most Florida drovers had this same skill. They used their whips to herd cows on cattle drives. According to legend, it was the loud 'craack' of the whips that gave Florida's drovers their nickname, 'Cracker cowboys,' but the term 'Cracker' was certainly used earlier.

If famed Western cowboy artist Frederic Remington didn't actually coin the title, he certainly perpetuated it by conferring it on Bone Mizell in 1895. The urbane Remington traveled from New York City to Florida that year to paint the scruffy-looking Mizell astride his horse. Remington called the painting A Cracker Cowboy. Other paintings of Bone and his cowboy colleagues appeared in the August 1895 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. The appellation stuck. Eventually it evolved into Florida Cracker, the title now reserved for the Sunshine State's native-born sons and daughters.

Bone Mizell was the original "Florida Cracker." He was also my grandmother's uncle.

But I, of course, prefer the term Saltine American.

There was a local article yesterday about how if you're a victim of a crime, or relative of one, you can get money from the state. They interviewed a couple people who were pleased with the money they got from the state to help with expenses.

I don't know. I'm sure there are people who really need this, but it was still just...off.

294 The Left claims Bush lied to get Congress to authorize Iraq War vote. ProgMedia has run about a billion "Bush Lied - People Died" stories.

Obama's biggest vote was Obamacare. The architect of Obamacare is out in public constantly bragging that "Goddamn right we lied! How else could we trick all the dipshit American voters into supporting it?" -- and the media is uninterested.

ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN -- not a single story.

This is literally like Cheney or Rumsfeld or Wolfowitz being caught on tape bragging about lying us into war.

OK, first, a lot of vegans are orthorexics - they have a righteous obsession with food. See, what they eat isn't about personal taste, they think they are saving the world with their choices. On the other hand, you would not believe the pressure moms have to breast feed. Serious pressure, guilt trips, etc. WHen I googled for articles on how to stop/transition baby to silid foods, most of the articles were like, "Are you sure? Because the health benefits yadda, yadda, yadda..."

I'm always of two minds about this shit.
I agree, parental rights should be incredibly broad.
I'm not sure starving your kid to death falls within that spectrum though. Having said that, kid lost weight, that's not uncommon if there's either: a) breast milk production problem or b) latch/feeding problem. I've had several friends have similar issues and once they switched to formula everything was A-OK.
And the vegan formula is usually OK for kids (IIRC it was designed as substitute for kids with allergies to milk proteins, someone at Similac or Enfamil probably just figured they'd stick a cool marketing label on it and ride the wave.)

Same here.

We put one in the front of the house a few years ago, and love it. It's a full glass, with a full screen to pop in in the warmer months. Bring a breeze all the way through the house to the back patio screen.

The full glass door absorbs in so much heat. And it's a double buffer for the very cold months. The heat does not come on nearly as much as before. It's a real money saver too.

East Coast Morons, please put me some knowledge (recent relocation
from the CA to VA) - what the heck is the purpose of a storm door? Why
put the clear door over a regular door?

Posted by: Russkilitlover at November 13, 2014 09:57 AM (nBsrv)

Not really an East coast thing is it?

Posted by: EC at November 13, 2014 09:58 AM (GQ8sn)

Storm doors originated for violent storms like hurricanes and the fact that wooden doors often swelled and cracked. Most builders are now saying that they are not needed for well sealed metal doors. But if you have a metal door that the jam has deformed causing air leaks it is a good option.

And no, it is not an east coast thing. I saw them quite often in Northern CA.

Posted by: D-Lamp at November 13, 2014 10:03 AM (txvbW)

If your child is legitimately starving, yes. It would be no different than not feeding any other child, and would constitute neglect.

However I didn't read the story, so I don't know the background of this particular event. If all that was happening was she was using vegan formula instead of regular formula, and some nanny stater nosy parker decided to report her, then that's ridiculous.

Unless I"m reading it wrong I think she was breast feeding.
And the kid was losing weight (not gaining?).

They wanted to take the kid to the hospital, she wanted to try "vegan formula" first.

Trying formula first isn't all that unusual in these cases. And as I noted "vegan" formula really only exists because some kids had cow's milk allergies (but why not market it to the hippies if you're going to make it anyway.)

We really need to be talking about how tethered the medical establishment is to the state. I mean it's become a quasi-legal authority.

That's bad, very bad. I've seen it (the medical establishment) used as a weapon in ways that make SWAT-ing look pleasant.

In cold weather areas, people have HUGE heating bills, so opening a door to see who is ringing the door bell is a lose/lose situation when all that hot air escapes to be replaced by cold air. So you can open the heavy storm proof door to see out and still have the more transparent storm door retain some of the heat and not have a blast of cold air come in the open door. A lot of doors in cold climates are solid insulated blocks with maybe a peephole. In truly cold places, there will be a small area like a space ship air lock giving you 3 or 4 doors between the cold snow and ice and the warm house.

Bottom line, you want a storm door if you are someplace cold enough to warrant it.

My storm door came with a window panel that raised with a screen so you could use it for ventilation in the spring as well.

I really do need to replace both the from and back but the price has risen from the original $100 I paid for each to over $200 now for comparable doors.

Soy based formulas are a thing. Have been since before the vegan craze.

I've got some friends who have to use them because cows milk based formulas give their kid hives.
Some kids too have lactose intolerance, being that lactose is in breast milk as well it makes a soy formula the only option.

As I said, if I'm a formula maker I'm going to stick a "vegan" sticker on what I'm already making just to grab any extra market share.

411 OK, serious answer. I got a hell of a deal on two commercial-grade wooden doors with large glass panels when I changed front entrances 30 years ago. Fitting them for a double-width opening required constructing an astragal, which I had up until then thought was some kind of Arabic algebra. Sounds like a Jetsons character. Getting them to seal was going to be an issue.

There is closed-cell polyurethane tape, they tell me originally to seal satellite panels. It has an easily-removable stripoff tape on the back, and a harder-to-remove clear plastic tape on the face. This is important.

If you strip both sides, you get a tape that wants to stick to both surfaces, great for mounting glass, useless for a door you will actually open. I used the thinnest tape of this kind I could find, and left the shiny plastic face on the side that contacts the opening part. If there are imperfections in the mating surfaces, you just double up underneath. Use a single piece, long run, as the top layer. You can use this even at the tight joints, where the door touches the jamb on the hinge side. The point is to seal the actual touching parts, not fill the gap between.

I've retaped about every ten years. With annual applications of WaterSeal, and once in a while soaking with diluted boiled linseed oil on a hot day, those doors are still good and still draft-tight after 30 years of exposure to a Great Lakes climate.

Gonna make a guess that the kid was taking too long te eat. Because our kid was in the NICU, his eating was supervised, and the nursed said that if he didn't finish his allotted milk (measured and bottle-fed) in 10 mins then he was burning more calories than taking in.
Probably also could have been that the mother was vegan, and her breast milk may have been lacking some nutrients.

And then bring over the family of the bff, of course. 14 year olds can't live alone, that'd be so cruel!

Probably should amnesty their favorite teacher back home, too. Also their neighbor, the nice older lady with the sugar-free candies.

I was just thinking about ole Ace.

There was one time in my life that I had a cluster migraine so bad, 3 days, that I HAD to go to the doctor and get a shot for the pain. But she had to stop my nausea first, so she gave me something for that, laid me down in a dark room for 20 mins, then came back with the pain shot. Worked within minutes. The relief.

While people are paid well to work in Congress they fact that they come out as multi millionaires means a lot of special interest money is coming in and that people are engaged in illegal trading. Luckily I'm not afraid of shots. Glad to accept them. It was a shot of some sort, like the pain killer -- which was heavy duty pain killer that worked almost instantly. No clue what that was either, but didn't care. It was a handful of years ago now.

I've had a few sessions of multiple day headaches, but nothing as bad as that. She did tell me that I will get it again (I didn't know what it was at the time), and it will come more often. She was right, but they've never been that bad.

466 Newborns, specially breastfed ones, losing some weight is pretty common.
Could be poor latch or poor breastfeeding technique, or the mom'c diet could be a factor. There are a lot of veggies that could make a mom's milk allergenic to the baby.
In general, the best way to get a breastfed baby to gain weight is to offer the breast often, and let the baby start & finish on one side at a time so the baby gets the fat-rich hindmilk and not just the watery foremilk.
Also spend a lot of time skin-to-skin with the baby.
Breastfeeding can be wonderful but is always extremely exhausting. Moms doing it need a whole support staff, imo, attending to her needs and doing her laundry & cooking.

485 You Should Know about storm doors: It's important to have a latch that really works, and a chain-and-spring limiter so it can't blow all the way open. ("How did you learn that, Spring?")

The ones with double-layer glass, or sliding self-storing glass panels, are particularly susceptible to expensive misfortune if not so mounted. Worth having, though.

They're pre-hung on a piano hinge, which is great. Pay attention to mounting that frame truly square. I had one blow shut really hard in my big-barn the other day, and it stuck in its own (semi-pliable plastic) frame so good I had to dismount the sumbitch to free it up. Can't believe I didn't break the glass. Rare event, close call.

We used to say at Large Govt Dept, if you really did learn from every mistake, this would be the smartest organization in the history of the world.

Paraphrasing, Dubya mentioned that Jeb thought Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Bush would be too much for people to take, whereupon he (Dubya) saud, "so how do you feel about Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Clinton?" Intimating that only Jeb could save us from Scankles.

I love Dubya, but the sooner Jeb gets it pounded into his head that no how, no way, never will he be the nominee, the better off we'll be.

And completely OT, isn't it time to go home yet? This cold of mine is killing me. I want to go to bed.

517 clean off the battery terminals

Yes. God Bless You.

Used to be one of those simple maintenance things you did to get ready for winter, or a long trip. Now, the battery may be under the back seat. Hermetically sealed.

On very many cars, there's a heavy-duty cable running directly to the starter. That connection has to be cleaned every few years too. Easy to do, sometimes hard to get to. Do that with the battery disconnected. (How'd you learn that, String?)

I phrased my comment improperly. The son was killed by an illegal alien who ran him over. Therefore, the father is saying "Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime" as some claim. 561 The only time Liberals get the conservative emotional point of view is when something like the twin towers occurs; then for a little while they understand. Then the liberal propaganda machine gets ginned up and the average lib somehow starts blaming things on conservatives. Perhaps when NYC gets an Iranian nuke up close and personal the remaining libs will get it. When that happens we need not to be conciliatory, but to yell at them loudly for being complete idiots, and point out how their idiocy got millions of people killed and not let up.

I have also had success pointing out how many people their death cult of big government has killed in the last 100 years: 30 million in the Soviet Union from planned famines and purges, 60 million in Communist China from the "great leap forward", 6 million in the Nazi Death camps, 2 million in the Cambodian killing fields, 55 million dead in the United States from abortions. Grind that into them emotionally and don't let up - rub their noses in how horrible they are and dare them to find anything small government conservatives have done that even vaguely compares. If they bring up globull warming and polar bears - point out what a crock of shit that is. CO2 is .03% of the atmosphere, and that we couldn't raise the temperature of the atmosphere two degrees if we deliberately tried to do it - let alone by accident. Present all of that emotionally and they shut the farq up.

564 There are no nations without militaries. There are nations with militaries, and there are nations who are so confident that the USA would protect them, they don't need to spent the money.

BTW, Canada and Mexico top that list. Wiki each of their navies. The USCG has more destroyer-sized cutters than Canada and Mexico... combined. By a wide margin.

Canada boasts 3 destroyers and 12 frigates. Plus 4 old (but modernizing) subs.

Mexico boasts 2 destroyers and 6 frigates, all US hand-me-downs. They also have a US LST, but I cannot fathom why. Maybe they are planning on invading Cozumel?

There are a LOT of nations with "no" military. Why would Panamy waste money on a military? Why would Iceland? And, as I point out, Canada and Mexico only keep a veneer of a military - enough so that they can say that they aren't dependent upon us.

But, of course, they are. This might be the USA's largest foreign subsidy...
