Speaking of Gruber.
May I just say cryptically: I'm fairly certain there's much more to be found in Zeke Emmanuel's work. Despite calling Gruber an "architect" Obamacare's final implementation looks more like Zeke's plan to smuggle single payer in via "regional subsidies." Which (IIRC) he specifically said was the only way possible to achieve the goal since Americans would find actual single payer to be an anathema. Guy wrote a book about it, has anyone actually bothered to read it? (Yeah I know, in theory they'd be me. But I hate the guy with the fuel of 1000 suns. And I'm lazy. And busy.) on the 2nd Gruber video that has surfaced
The longer video also give the full background of Gruber's remarks. Gruber was talking about the so-called "Cadillac tax" in Obamacare, which increased the tax on high-end insurance packages. The fact that Obamacare would raise taxes was seen as politically toxic. But then-Senator John Kerry came up with the idea of taxing the companies providing the Cadillac plans, rather than taxing Americans directly. Gruber told him that it was the same thing, and he didn't see why that's matter. "You'll see," responded Kerry. Sure enough, the provision passed, in Gruber's estimation because "the American people are too stupid to understand the difference." daily caller Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 12, 2014 09:02 AM (IXrOn) 35

dunno if Vic or someone else mentioned this: from Bloomberg via Weaselzippers:
Times have changed. A new Gallup poll finds that a large majority of Americans would like the Republican-controlled Congress, rather than President Obama, to set the direction for the country in the coming year, a marked change from 2012, when a slim majority said they preferred for Obama to guide the agenda. "Who do you want to have more influence over the direction the nation takes in the next year - Barack Obama or the Republicans in Congress?" Gallup asked 828 U.S. adults. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed said they wanted Republicans in Congress to have the greater influence, 36 percent said Obama, and 8 percent, well, didn't seem to care, answering "same/neither." So, my wife work for a county government and it's open enrollment time for insurance.
Turns out that the plan she had/has is now prohibitively expensive and she can't keep it. The plan that she is now forced to moving to is still more expensive than the plan she had, but whatayagonna do? She has some fairly complicated health issues that the doctors she had/has have experiencing in treating. Problem is, they are not in this new plan's network, so she can't keep her doctors. One of the drugs she is on is not covered by the new plan, yet is the only drug that works on her condition so this will cost us a minimum of $300 more a month which will still be less than her former plan so she can't even keep her goddamned medicines. This is a fair point. Having said that. I bought my grandpa a Kindle fire. (Well a bunch of us grandkids did.) Why? Because it's fairly easy to use. Got it set up for him in 30 seconds, and with the mayday button he's been able to use for what he needs it for (mostly reading news and emails and playing games.) So if amazon manages to hit that sweet spot again they might sell a bunch of these, but I think you're right, it'll languish behind other better options. Am I the only one who wants to see Hell break loose in Ferguson? I live ~20 minutes from that community. I was up there the weekend of the most intense "protesting". The sad part is it's the small business men and women who are paying the price. Also, we are living in low level fear that the local "urban" communities decide to (mostly peaceful) protest. If you google "Paul Krugman accountability," you'll see he used to use the word in his writing. Bush years were good years for demanding accountability.
Now, oh no accidents happen we should just excuse them. This is why the modern left will never consolidate its frequent majorities or make anyone happy. They'll break things, but won't accomplish their goals. Because demanding results is tantamount to some -ism in their mind. Expecting people to do anything correctly is unreasonable. A better man would put aside his ideology and demand those he elected sit the fuck down and proofread the shit so they know what the fuck they're voting on and rewrite the fucking shit if they fuck it up because that's what they've been elected to do. A Krug-man obfuscates it as a typo and wishes it away without harm. Posted by: 0302 at November 12, 2014 09:20 AM (N6eLE) 121

There will be no sanity, I'm watching this play out on a macro and micro level. Consider: I have two cousins. One was telling their son (home from college) to flee the house rather than stay and be in danger. The other is calling this as bad as the Rodney King beating and trying to gin up more support. The latter is deaf to the concerns of the former. I'll let you divine why she's not afraid. Plus, there are no facts that could upset the belief that this was an unjustified shooting. 0. None. Video could arise of Michael Brown running down the street firing a bazooka at houses and they'd still call this "the most unjust killing ever." Now I'm a person who is highly skeptical of the current state of police use of force. But there were significantly better cases to hitch your wagon too. (The guy in SC shot while getting his license out of his car, the guy in the Walmart with the BB gun, etc.) Why these groups tie their fortune to such shitty cases as Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown, and pass over much better cases, I'll never get. The Ferguson situation is enlightening, at least to me, and not in a way that it is for most of you.
See, I lived there for 10 years. Eighteen years before that, I lived around the corner from it. And I still live in the STL area. Since the original riots, I've been in that area. I've got a picture on my cellphone of the burned-out QuikTrip. I still have relatives and acquaintances that live there or within a few miles of there. Let me tell you (and this is the enlightening part), what you see in TV and the media is like viewing the Grand Canyon through a peephole. All you see is the assholes, and that's because that's all the media wants to show you. The media is dishonest, corrupt, unconcerned, sensationalistic, etc. And, because the media are there, licking their chops, they attract scumbags from far and wide who are there to promote and advance themselves: race grifters, radicals, and revolutionaries. All of whom will gladly forment pain and death on others to advance themselves. The thing I've learned is exactly how the media distorts what everyone else sees. Last night on ID A Crime to Remember series they covered the Kitty Genovese case.
It turns out only two people witnessed the attack. First one yelled out his window and scared the killer. Then Kitty stumbled to another street with a punctured lung and collapsed in another apartment building's landing where she called out to the man at the top of the stairs. The killer came back and proceeded to rape and stab her right there. There never was 38 people who witnessed the attack. The police interviewed 38 people. And the NYC police commissioner meeting with a news editor several days after the NYPD had already arrested the killer said there were 38 witnesses. TED CRUZ WINS: THE SHUTDOWN WORKED Republicans who got the politics of the shutdown wrong. ... Cruz sailed on, confident he would be seen not only as right -- but that what he was doing was a boost to the GOP. It was, in fact, the exact same strategy that Ronald Reagan employed when he would veto a bill knowing full well he would be overridden by both Democrats and less than courageous Republicans in Congress -- yet issuing the veto to draw a line between Democrats and Republicans so Americans would understand the bright line that was supposed to divide the two parties. http://spectator.org/articles/60939/ted-cruz-wins-shutdown-worked The article goes on to list those that were naysayers, and it reads like you would expect. I believe Brown attacked the cop and got shot for his troubles. Whose knee was in or out of the vehicle at the time, or the contents of Brown's pockets, or the precise angle of the shots, that stuff is interesting, and should be known, but it's ultimately not a big deal.

Conservative Treehouse has done an excellent job fisking the evidence. The feds who have seen all the evidence has leaked repeatedly that there is insuff evidence to endict.
The case is not that complicated. When DW stopped and tried to exit his truck when he relealised Brown was a suspect in the nearby strong armed robbery that occurred minutes early. Brown slammed the door on him, reached thru the window and pushed him severl times in the face. DW unsnapped his holster and Brown went for his gun and tried to grab it. He was shot in the hand and there was a second shot thru the window that hit a window. Brown ran and DW gave chase. Brown stopped, turned around and rushed him. DW kept shooting but Brown did not stop unitl he was hit 6 times. He was high as a kite. Deathrow is filled with guys who were not armed when they killed a cop. DW's life was in danger. Just because some people are demanding the cop's execution without trial doesn't mean we have to go full retard the other direction.
Like Trayvon, one side staked out a radical position immediately: Pure and innocent chile, absolute evil killer. Reasonable people are sympathetic, but wait for the facts. The radicals, though, take the absolute position and can never dial that back. Because they're radicals. And when the story starts to unravel, reasonable people abandon the radicals even further because they cannot accept facts that diminish their absolutist position. Warren Buffet owns equity on the railroads than ship petroleum from Canada to the US. The railroads make $2 billion dollars a year shipping it... that's why Keystone won't happen. Posted by: MikeH at November 12, 2014 09:05 AM (NggZ3) I wonder about that. Right now the petroleum shipments are tying up rail-lines for general cargo, and pushing a lot of it to highway. Buffet is sharp enough to see an issue with this, that in the future he may loose both the oil shipments and then he won't get the general cargo/wheat and whatnot back. He is also sharp enough to know that lower energy prices make greater industry better. He might be holding out for first funding his rail-lines and rolling stock though. off to safe haven in a country that does not have an extradition treaty with the US. They think. Cuba, Iran, Morroco, PRChina? Would you trust your continuing freedom to any of these countries? Three of them would turn you into a rug and one would sell you to the highest bidder. Posted by: Kindltot at November 12, 2014 09:53 AM (t//F+) 272

I think it is clear that all the numbers associated with O-Care and medicare and really , all the budget numbers... clearly fake and untrustworthy. After Gruber... how can ANYTHING not be seen as total made-up BS. If they'll lie about one thing, they'll lie about all of it. Every GOP talking head needs to bring this up in every interview and speech... we cannot trust this administration because they clearly have no problem with lying to further their goals and cover-up their misdeeds. Criminal enterprise and they'll get away with it..

That's right, AMC. I had seen it a couple times on TV, but couldn't stand it because of the way they chopped it up for commercials/previews/recaps all jammed into one half hour. You got to watch the same scenes a dozen times "....Coming up...". On Netflix it goes much smoother. I like all the guys behind the counter, Smith is useless to the show.

So the NYC hatchetman was influenced by the Menonites. Good to know.
Kidding. Of course it was the religion of peace. http://tinyurl.com/pftgzul The man who carried out the brutal hatchet attack on two NYPD officers was heavily motivated by radical Islam and was 'jihadist inspired', a new intelligence report reveals. The preliminary report into Zale Thompson's October 23 assault initially concluded the 32-year-old, who used the name Zaim Farouq Abdul-malik on social media, was influenced by anti-government or black power sentiments. However, a four page intelligence report from the NYPD has confirmed Thompson's self-radicalization and his creeping obsession with terror outfits such as al-Qaeda and Islamic State. I was reading a postmortem on Kos (I think that was linked here? or linked from a link) that discussed the Oregon races, and that "when Dems turn out, things stay blue". This was somewhat negated by the fact that their "turnout" is all mail-in--nobody had to go anywhere or do anything but fill out a form and send it back, which they thought should be applied nationwide. In addition, since "Portlandia" exists for a reason, I don't know how applicable the sentiments of Kosbots from OR are to the nation at large. The overwhelming consensus in the commentary seemed to be that Dems failed for not EMBRACING Obama, and that since pot was on the ballot in OR and obviously boosted returns, THE ANSWER in 2016 was to run Sanders/Warren or Warren/Sanders, and put pot on the ballot in every state. As for the sidebar here quoting Sanders asking whether people are sufficiently demoralized to embrace his candidacy, that's not talking about a campgin, IMO. It's testing the waters for revolution. I can't joke about this one. This is bad news. The auto industry just got killed. Utility bills are going up, a lot. We'll have to subsidized half the populace as they won't be able to afford those utility bills.
Cut emissions by 25-28% (from 2005 levels) in 10 years? Radical. Meanwhile China gets to pollute as much as they please until 2030, at which point they agree to "start" lowering emissions with no hard target? Unbelieveable. Am I overstating? Um, excuse me, how did that Federalist commentator manage to skip over the little tiny matter of millions of people losing access to affordable insurance in the private market? He mentioned 6 million and more to come. But didn't mention that private policies continue to exist .... but have seen up to300% premiumexplosions (with policy quality declines). Making themessentially unaffordable, whereas before they were simply outrageous, due to federal and state manipulation, cost-shifting, subsidies, and state-levelcartel effects of regulation. So people who have bought their own coverage for their entire lives suddenly find themselves facing a choice between crappy coverage with huge financial damage, and nothing. How many actual new "benficiaries" are there? People who were specifically unable to afford insurance prior to this year due to financial barriers alone? NOT including those who were bumped out of insurance and then re-upped via exchanges? Isn't it even less than 6 million? This has been a national practical IQ test from the outset. Failure. How difficult would it be to identify the very very small cohort of people who are involuntarily, financially without access to insurance and give them a direct subsidy to buy on the existing market? That's what I thought. Versus this gigantic, unconstitutional, absurd, destructive, unworkable, self-parody of idiotic regulation and vandalism by the incredibly stupid and vile little insects like Gruber and his fellownon-elite elite power mongers. Just to round up the topic with (dark) laughter - has anyone, even once, heard or read a remotely sensible, economically literate suggestion for real reformto restore an actual health insurance market (whichwould cut costs and thus ease access dramatically) from a GOP publicfigure? the problem I see is that companies will assume they will be stuck with these onerous requirements in a few years anyway when the pendulum swings the other way, and will start making the expensive retrofitting to comply so even if pubs hold tell them they don't have to, they may anyway an costs go up any way and you would be surprised how many of these energy companies, with vast coal plants, are run by progs I'm looking at you NRG Posted by: ThunderB at November 12, 2014 11:05 AM (zOTsN) 479

We cut our CO2 emissions by 28% from what they were... by 2030. China stops GROWING her emissions, by 2030. so we destroy our energy generation, for non existent man made global warming... Just to round up the topic with (dark) laughter - has anyone, even once, heard or read a remotely sensible, economically literate suggestion for real reformto restore an actual health insurance market (whichwould cut costs and thus ease access dramatically) from a GOP publicfigure?

Oh, thunderb, how right you are. Not just energy companies. As most of us have noticed and noted here in a million different ways, the whole economy is becoming politicized. The inexorable outcome of too much state intervention, and too much public ignorance and manipulation. Which is why it's critical not just to block and destroy all the policies and instruments of environmental cultism, esp. the AGW aspect, but to change the framework within which it all happens. Probably impossiblein a country so degraded as the US has become, where some it's most "educated" people are pathetically miseducated, misinformed, and seemingly bereft of all the distinctive and historically valuable American traits. Vapid little ("educated") urbanites and suburbanites happy to be herded around in their NPR-level fantasy worlds - so long as THEIR gravy train is secure. So - attack the attack on real science represented by the lysenkoism of AGW, not just pick the low-hanging fruit of saving people from ruinous increases in their monthly bills.
