Despite calling Gruber an "architect" Obamacare's final implementation looks more like Zeke's plan to smuggle single payer in via "regional subsidies." Which (IIRC) he specifically said was the only way possible to achieve the goal since Americans would find actual single payer to be an anathema.
Guy wrote a book about it, has anyone actually bothered to read it? (Yeah I know, in theory they'd be me. But I hate the guy with the fuel of 1000 suns. And I'm lazy. And busy.)

The longer video also give the full background of Gruber's remarks. Gruber was talking about the so-called "Cadillac tax" in Obamacare, which increased the tax on high-end insurance packages. The fact that Obamacare would raise taxes was seen as politically toxic. But then-Senator John Kerry came up with the idea of taxing the companies providing the Cadillac plans, rather than taxing Americans directly.
Gruber told him that it was the same thing, and he didn't see why that's matter. "You'll see," responded Kerry. Sure enough, the provision passed, in Gruber's estimation because "the American people are too stupid to understand the difference."

Because otherwise it's a basically half a smartphone (not even half, more like 1/4.)
The best it *might* have going is if the speaker is any good (such that it could replace my current music playing setup.) But even then, most consoles are will stream music from the cloud too. (Which is my current setup, Xbox to the TV.)

Turns out that the plan she had/has is now prohibitively expensive and she can't keep it. The plan that she is now forced to moving to is still more expensive than the plan she had, but whatayagonna do?
She has some fairly complicated health issues that the doctors she had/has have experiencing in treating. Problem is, they are not in this new plan's network, so she can't keep her doctors.
One of the drugs she is on is not covered by the new plan, yet is the only drug that works on her condition so this will cost us a minimum of $300 more a month which will still be less than her former plan so she can't even keep her goddamned medicines.
So that's what obamacare has done for us.

Having said that. I bought my grandpa a Kindle fire. (Well a bunch of us grandkids did.) Why? Because it's fairly easy to use. Got it set up for him in 30 seconds, and with the mayday button he's been able to use for what he needs it for (mostly reading news and emails and playing games.)
So if amazon manages to hit that sweet spot again they might sell a bunch of these, but I think you're right, it'll languish behind other better options.
Which makes me think it's really just a tech display that they're tricking idiots into buying.

I live ~20 minutes from that community. I was up there the weekend of the most intense "protesting". The sad part is it's the small business men and women who are paying the price. Also, we are living in low level fear that the local "urban" communities decide to (mostly peaceful) protest.

There will be no sanity, I'm watching this play out on a macro and micro level.
Consider: I have two cousins. One was telling their son (home from college) to flee the house rather than stay and be in danger.
The other is calling this as bad as the Rodney King beating and trying to gin up more support.
The latter is deaf to the concerns of the former. I'll let you divine why she's not afraid.
Plus, there are no facts that could upset the belief that this was an unjustified shooting. 0. None. Video could arise of Michael Brown running down the street firing a bazooka at houses and they'd still call this "the most unjust killing ever."
Now I'm a person who is highly skeptical of the current state of police use of force. But there were significantly better cases to hitch your wagon too. (The guy in SC shot while getting his license out of his car, the guy in the Walmart with the BB gun, etc.) Why these groups tie their fortune to such shitty cases as Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown, and pass over much better cases, I'll never get.

See, I lived there for 10 years. Eighteen years before that, I lived around the corner from it. And I still live in the STL area. Since the original riots, I've been in that area. I've got a picture on my cellphone of the burned-out QuikTrip. I still have relatives and acquaintances that live there or within a few miles of there.
Let me tell you (and this is the enlightening part), what you see in TV and the media is like viewing the Grand Canyon through a peephole. All you see is the assholes, and that's because that's all the media wants to show you. The media is dishonest, corrupt, unconcerned, sensationalistic, etc.
And, because the media are there, licking their chops, they attract scumbags from far and wide who are there to promote and advance themselves: race grifters, radicals, and revolutionaries. All of whom will gladly forment pain and death on others to advance themselves.
The thing I've learned is exactly how the media distorts what everyone else sees.

The case is not that complicated. When DW stopped and tried to exit his truck when he relealised Brown was a suspect in the nearby strong armed robbery that occurred minutes early. Brown slammed the door on him, reached thru the window and pushed him severl times in the face. DW unsnapped his holster and Brown went for his gun and tried to grab it. He was shot in the hand and there was a second shot thru the window that hit a window. Brown ran and DW gave chase. Brown stopped, turned around and rushed him. DW kept shooting but Brown did not stop unitl he was hit 6 times. He was high as a kite.
Deathrow is filled with guys who were not armed when they killed a cop. DW's life was in danger.

I wonder about that. Right now the petroleum shipments are tying up rail-lines for general cargo, and pushing a lot of it to highway. Buffet is sharp enough to see an issue with this, that in the future he may loose both the oil shipments and then he won't get the general cargo/wheat and whatnot back.
He is also sharp enough to know that lower energy prices make greater industry better. He might be holding out for first funding his rail-lines and rolling stock though.

she has the upper arm but nothing below the elbow. She has some sort of digit at the end of her stump, although you don't really see it until she uses it. She can dial and text on her smart phone with it. She has a wheelchair with a joystick that she can navigate with the digit as well

I was reading a postmortem on Kos (I think that was linked here? or linked from a link) that discussed the Oregon races, and that "when Dems turn out, things stay blue".
This was somewhat negated by the fact that their "turnout" is all mail-in--nobody had to go anywhere or do anything but fill out a form and send it back, which they thought should be applied nationwide.
In addition, since "Portlandia" exists for a reason, I don't know how applicable the sentiments of Kosbots from OR are to the nation at large.
The overwhelming consensus in the commentary seemed to be that Dems failed for not EMBRACING Obama, and that since pot was on the ballot in OR and obviously boosted returns, THE ANSWER in 2016 was to run Sanders/Warren or Warren/Sanders, and put pot on the ballot in every state.
As for the sidebar here quoting Sanders asking whether people are sufficiently demoralized to embrace his candidacy, that's not talking about a campgin, IMO. It's testing the waters for revolution.

Versus this gigantic, unconstitutional, absurd, destructive, unworkable, self-parody of idiotic regulation and vandalism by the incredibly stupid and vile little insects like Gruber and his fellownon-elite elite power mongers.

the problem I see is that companies will assume they will be stuck with these onerous requirements in a few years anyway when the pendulum swings the other way, and will start making the expensive retrofitting to comply

Oh, thunderb, how right you are. Not just energy companies. As most of us have noticed and noted here in a million different ways, the whole economy is becoming politicized. The inexorable outcome of too much state intervention, and too much public ignorance and manipulation.
Which is why it's critical not just to block and destroy all the policies and instruments of environmental cultism, esp. the AGW aspect, but to change the framework within which it all happens.
Probably impossiblein a country so degraded as the US has become, where some it's most "educated" people are pathetically miseducated, misinformed, and seemingly bereft of all the distinctive and historically valuable American traits. Vapid little ("educated") urbanites and suburbanites happy to be herded around in their NPR-level fantasy worlds - so long as THEIR gravy train is secure.
So - attack the attack on real science represented by the lysenkoism of AGW, not just pick the low-hanging fruit of saving people from ruinous increases in their monthly bills.
