A senior Navy intelligence leader whose provocative comments this year about Chinese bellicosity stirred an international controversy has been shelved in the wake of an investigation into his conduct, Navy Times has learned.
Fanell warned during a February public appearance that a recent Chinese amphibious exercise led naval intelligence to assess that Chinas strategy was to be able to launch a short, sharp war with Japan, an unusually frank assessment about a closely watched region. Fanell leaped into the public spotlight earlier this year when the press picked up on remarks he made at the U.S. Naval Institute's WEST 2014 conference Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil, See no Evil. Long time ago, I wrote a little utility to mine AoS comments for my nic, and variants. Sometimes it catches replies made after I quit reading a thread, among other purposes.
When the crash happened, I had to modify it to add 1080 if necessary, and did so in a way that when 1080 was dropped, it would still work. I haven't tried it since the fix, but I'm wondering if Pixy didn't throw me a curve with the new acecomments URL. Don't much like going in and trying to figure out old code, no matter how well commented (and mine often isn't). Cue "Third World Problems." So how goes the B-17G? Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at November 10, 2014 10:32 AM (jwNlc) Um. I have finished the tube, all extras (gear, ball, stinger, et al.) and the wings. Initial paint is down. Also. I dropped the tube a few weeks ago. From about 3 feet. Onto cement. The blast radius of the pieces was (yes, I measured) 22 feet. Reconstruction/repair took about two weeks of my life and the last of my patience. Markings are going on now. I've got the strike markings, tail codes and fuselage stars and bar on. Wing stars and bars are masked off (I don't believe in decals) and the white should go down tonight. I've been weathering as I go, but there will be more work when it's assembled. I read a very whiny liberal review criticizing its political overtones.. It does celebrate the pioneer spirit. It advocates space exploration. It does not explicitly blame mankind on the "blight" that destroyed the crops. That being said, the first 2/3 of the movie is a comic book. Not serious science. The last part is interesting and beautiful to watch. The black hole is done very well. Though you have to take the final "trick" with a grain of salt the size of a Buick. Bottom line- Stanley Kubrick's legacy is still safe. "2001" still rules. Posted by: Bat Chain Puller at November 10, 2014 10:38 AM (SCcgT) Posted by: Ken at November 10, 2014 10:39 AM (Cp0Ie) 86

107 I'm only commenting because I can!!
As to Intestellar - it's decent. One over-arching complaint I've heard (and with which I agree) is that we've reached a point where movie producers care more about sound effects than dialog. It's incredibly loud at points, and you lose what's being said. My ears shouldn't hurt twenty minutes after leaving the theater. Yes. That makes me sound old. Get off my lawn. Posted by: Washington Nearsider, Keeper of the Guards, returned from 1080 exile at November 10, 2014 10:31 AM (fwARV) See, I was all excited to see it but then I started hearing from everywhere that the sound mix is ridiculously loud and, yeah, my delicate flowerness of a stupid beta meatsack would rebel a lot at that. There's yet another reason why movie attendance is down. I can pay $20 or so to go to the movies and get my ears blasted out while dealing with Outside or I can wait a few months and pay $20 for the blu ray/HD download and watch it in full HD at home with my snacks and my bathroom right there. *taps chin* Let me think. Interstellar- yes the sound is fucked up. I was flabbergasted that that mix could have been approved. I had some tissue paper in my ears which helped. (I do that at lots of movies- I have mild tinnitus). Most movies these days are TOO FREAKIN LOUD.

"Gruber, the MIT professor who served as a technical consultant to the Obama administration during Obamacare's design, also made clear during a panel quietly captured on video that the individual mandate, which was only upheld by the Supreme Court because it was a tax, was not actually a tax." Conspicuous. Consumption. My understanding is that they didn't keep them from getting dirty and wet; they washed them, and, yes, they didn't last very long. Hoop skirts (which *would* hold the hem up off the ground) were basically invented so that not-quite-as-rich people could still dress as nicely as the uber rich. Poor women wore clothes of lesser quality (which would hold up better to washing anyway), and often had the hem stop at their ankles. Why is this Obamacare video only coming up now --reports I'm reading are he said these things last October. In a public forum.
This highlights the need for more right-wing operatives to film every gathering of prominent left-wingers on every campus and every think tank. That and run the vids through speech recognition to pull out the text and do a search. Probably too much video to watch it all. Future of politics is automated AI that watches everything your enemy does in public, scans it and flags any potential "gotcha" content for review by humans. It was the Dems who used thug tactics to pass Obamacare, not the American people's stupidity. It was legislators like Bart Stupek who believed Obama's signing statement that it would not fund abortions, or the ones who were happy to take bribes (e.g." Cornhusker Kickback").
Meanwhile, the American people were protesting - at townhalls, at tea party rallies, by electing a Republican in place of Ted Kennedy, etc. Hard to argue that we were effectively duped when it helped inspire a widespread political movement. Posted by: Lizzy at November 10, 2014 11:05 AM (ABcz/) 179

Saw Interstellar in the IMAX. I cannot compare it to the non-IMAX but it was pretty cool.
I liked the epic scale of the movie. You don't see that much. The science was internally consistent. Loud as a mofo and yes it drowned out a couple of key parts of dialog for me - my wife wore earplugs and she filled me in later. But I did like the sound - just wish it did not drown out some dialog. A guy I did not realize was in the movie was in the movie, and he played a singularly unlikeable character, which is a surprise because I have always seen him play likeable characters.
