North America, F*** Yea! [WeirdDave]

If you've ever wondered what would happen if I wrote one of these OT threads while snockered, well, you're in luck because I did just that late one night this past week. Presented without comment (from me, I'm sure y'all will have a bunch).

My wife is fiercely, proudly Canadian, the embodiment of all that that means. At the same time I am fiercely, proudly American, representative of all that we stand for. So, suppose we merged these two things through song (Gingy and I have already merged them through our children, and we merge them IRL every day).

Canadian Girls by Dean Brody

She grew up watching hockey
With her daddy on Saturday nights
He taught her how to tie her skates
Her brothers taught her how to fight
She can wear high heels or flannel
She can look sexy in a touque
She likes snow storms and Gordon Lightfoot
And if you're lucky she'll love you
Canadian girls, Canadian girls
Irresistable, lovable trouble though sometimes girls
We can travel the world
From New York to Paris France
But we're always gonna come back
Canadian girls
Baby she likes to snow board
Spends her summers out on a boat
Thinks a perfect night out is a cabin
Smell of coffee on an old wood stove
She won't admit she watched Degrassi
She proud but she's sometimes quiet
True northern national treasure
She'd give her life for Red and White
Canadian girls, Canadian girls
Irresistable, lovable trouble though sometimes girls
We can travel the world
From New York to Paris France
But we're always gonna come back
Canadian girls
Us boys we like our fishing
Our hockey and Ron McLean
We like moose head beer and white tail deer
Stompin Tom and the UFC
We like our foreign ladies
Their accents are really nice
But there aint nothing like our northern girls
To keep us warm at night
Canadian girls, Canadian girls
Irresistible, lovable trouble though sometimes girls
We can travel the world

From New York to Paris France
But were always gonna come back
Canadian girls
From the mountains to the ocean sands
Tuktoyaktuk to Newfoundland
Yeah you keep us coming back
Canadian girls

American Heart by Jon David.

They say
Our reputation
Needs a new coat of paint and a delicate melody
But I say
I like the bruises
And a melody don't mean a thing
If we don't have the strength to sing
I won't be made to ever feel ashamed...
...that I'm American made
I got American parts
Got American faith
In America's heart
Go on raise the flag
I got stars in my eyes
I'm in love with her
And I won't apologize
They say
That we need changin'
As if all the Founding Fathers seem to get it wrong
But I say
I still believe in
the greatest Liberator, Innovator, Cultivator
Freedom's ever known
So I suggest you take a look inside
I think you changed already
You went and lost your pride
But I'm American made
I got American parts
Got American faith
In America's heart
Go on raise the flag
I got stars in my eyes
I'm in love with her
And I won't apologize
Dress her up so that you don't recognize her
She'll still be there if you wake up in the night
'Cause a mother can always find her child
Even when that child don't know he's lost
I'm American made
I got American parts
Got American faith
In America's heart
Go on raise the flag
I got stars in my eyes
I'm in love with her
And I won’t apologize
I'm in love with her
And I won't apologize
I'm in love with her
And I won't apologize

I'm going to keep coming back to my Canadian girl. I hope she'll keep coming back to my American heart.

Canada and the United States are the grandest pinnacle of the grandest culture and civilization in the history of the world. What are you going to counter with? Arab savagery? Russian Despotism? Chinese conformity? Keep trying bub. South American banana republics? African poverty? European condescension and light socialism (made possible by the good old US of A financing their defense for 50 years)? You're not even in the ballpark. Together Canada and America could solve all the world's problems, if we only had the balls to do it. Anyone who doesn't like that is cordially invited to eat my fuck.

No matter. I won't apologize, and if that's my epithet, so be it.
On second thought, I want this to be my epithet, from the brilliant P.J. O'Rourke:

We're the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car wreck and descended from a stock market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France, and Spain, roll them all together and it wouldn't give us room to park our cars. We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in Cap d'Antibes. And we've got an American Express card credit limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go. You say our country's never been invaded? You're right, little buddy. Because I'd like to see the needle-dicked foreigners who'd have the guts to try. We drink napalm to get our hearts started in the morning. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying 'Cheerio.' Hell can't hold our sock-hops. We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, fuck longer and buy more things than you know the names of. I’d rather be a junkie in a New York City jail than king, queen, and jack of all Europeans. We eat little countries like this for breakfast and shit them out before lunch.

Actually, it was first published when PJ wrote for Rolling Stone back in the '80's, from a column called "Revenge of the Euro-Weenies".

I usta subscribe to Rolling Stone then just to read PJ's essays when he was staff writer for them, because otherwise it was a pretentious pile of dog excrement. It was fun reading the subscriber letters to PJ's columns a few months after they were published. Reactions were never tepid.

28 My experience traveling in Canada has been that Canadians are usually very nice folks, and usually very friendly.

But the unspoken part of their character is that they are tough. The climate in most of the country is pretty tough, and I'm speaking of the winter.
I was in Cochrane, Ontario last April, and winter was just starting to let go. People that live there don't give no-nevermind to how tough the weather is.
But MOST Canadians live in a handful of big cities, and not up north, really up north, in the small towns. So a lot of the really tough (but nice) folks are really a minority.
Toronto- Mississaugua, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and a lot of towns not more than 100 miles north of the US Border.

Why would progressives want to teach anything about that? It's nothing but bad messages: People have inherent dignity and rights (Abolitionists); It IS possible to at least attempt to kick out a government that you see as infringing on your rights, and your State's legal position (South); You're going to have a really hard time winning a war unless you're willing to burn the other guy's shit down and shoot him in the face (Union army).

Can't teach them that! They might get... ideas, and stuff.

68 They should do a crime series called Special Snowflakes Unit. The premise would be: Every episode opens with the murder of a Special Snowflake, with the murderer clearly identified, and the rest of the episode would feature how the police and legal system, using nothing but logic and common sense, demonstrate how the killing was justified.

Ripped from today's headlines, the pilot would cover the demise of Staci Chokeson-Dix from asymptomatic malaria and a Louisville Slugger, but mostly a Louisville Slugger.

Just encourage everybody you know who might vote against the Democrats to get out and vote and even if you don't like RINOS they may be the only thing that stands between disastrous picks like the person Obama is considering for the new AG whose name escapes me, but who is even more extreme than Holder and Supreme Court picks. Hate to break it to you "buddy", but your prejudices are out of date, in fact the reverse is much closer to being true, if it wasn't for the 1st and 2nd A, the reverse would be true. Yes, Canada had their time in the leftist wilderness, but they've swung back to being much more conservative. Steyn won his case, remember? Would that we'll be able to do the same.

I was informed to keep it in a locked case in my luggage when checking in at Frankfurt airport. I had connecting flight through Heathrow and was pulled from the plane in London at the last minute to meet an armed security team with my Army duffle bag at their feet.

The ugly truth is that party leadership plans to do nothing substantive on ObamaCare, plans to pass amnesty and plans in general to avoid actions that feed the "Party of No" narrative going into 2016. Because after we "do whatever it takes to win this election" they'll start telling us the same thing about 2016.

Canada had nothing to do with burning the White House, a fact that seems to escape 95% of the Canadians I've ever met. Those were British troops, straight off the boat from the Napoleonic wars. "Canadian" troops (there was no Canada yet) were tired down in the back and forth of the Great Lakes campaign. Also, the primary "war aim" of the War of 1812 was to stop the British from impressing American sailors, which we accomplished, so you're 0 for 2. Try again.

Posted by: Weirddave at November 01, 2014 12:39 PM (9422s)

191 " You just can't beat thepencil on paper followed by hand countingmethod, and voters show ID."

This is very important. All the motor-voter, online proposals, electronic voting etc... may be convenient, but they're more easily manipulated on a large scale. And presenting ID and otherwise verifying your eligibility should be done face to face. Paper ballots are a much more reliable primary source of evidence for electoral scrutiny than any electronic system I've heard of. And the level of security steps it would take to make electronic voting more reliable would be met with more protests of "vote suppression" than ever. That's the other reason paper ballots are preferable - their past acceptance de-fangs the argument about denying access vs. innovation and accountability.

Canada gets a lot of things right. I think that's because Canadians on the whole have more of the "frontier" independent spirit left, particularly the further you get from Montreal and other major cities. The principles and spirit of your people are better guardians of civilization than the words of your constitution or the politicians you choose.

Canada seems nice.

They seem to think they won the war of 1812. It's kind of cute.

I'll grant you that the US were quite successful in naval actions on the Great Lakes, but on land, the US Army was a total disaster. Off the top of my head, US victories include York, River Thames, Ft Erie/Chippawa. New Orleans doesn't count as it was after the Treaty of Ghent was signed.

British victories include Ft Mackinac, Detroit, Queenston Heights, Chateauguay, Washington (retaliation for York), River Raisin (site of ONLY US battlefield park devoted to 1812), Occupation of Maine, Lundy's Lane (dubbed "inconclusive" but the invading US Army had to withdraw.

The British/Canadians achieved their defensive war aims. The aggressor US definitely did not. But the real losers were the Indian allies of the British, who were no longer armed by the British after the war.

Posted by: Weirddave at November 01, 2014 12:39 PM (9422s)

Sorry, no. Impressing had already been negotiated and had stopped before the war started. This is a fig leaf to assuage the embarrassment of the poor showing by the US Army. The main war aim, as set out by the western senators was to acquire British North America. This was deemed a simple thing given Britain's World War against Napolean, so the US, in effect, became allies to a man who wanted to put all of Europe under his own personal thumb. So it became Imperial Tyrant = Good, Democratic Constitutional Monarchy = Bad, hmmm. The US outnumbered the Brits/Canadians 10 to 1 and failed utterly. Not a great record.

So wait, Canada invaded the US and were repulsed? By your own logic that means we won. Britain invaded, burned Washington, then got their bits handed to them when they tried to take Baltimre, so they withdrew their forces. Guess we won there too.

I've never understood the desperation so many Canadians seem to have to turn what was a militarily a stalemate into some kind of imaginary victory. With the exception of the French performance in The Battle of The Plains of Abraham, the record of the Canadian military is exemplary. Why they constantly try to invent some great victory that never happend is beyond me.

The U.S. invaded Canada in 1812first. When Canada invaded the U.S. and burned Washington, it was 2 years later, in1814. They burned the Capitol in 1814 inretaliation for the wanton destruction that the U.S. visited on Upper Canada.
It was retaliatory, and that retaliation was successful. Baltimore was also targeted, but the U.S. successfully defended Baltimore. Nevertheless, burning Washington, the Capitol, was a big deal.

The U.S. declared war and invaded Canada first, with the intention of conquest. The U.S. failed to achieve their war aims. The British colony of Canada did achieve their war aims, retaliation and repulsing of the American invasion.

Only one problem. The Canadians didn't invade the US and burn Washington DC, that was the Brits, under Major Gen. Robert Ross. The US/Canadian conflicts were along our mutual border and were basically a back-and-forth; however the Indian leadership was wiped out which ended one of the American complaints against the British (namely, the arming and supplying of Indian tribes in the Northwest Territories).

The end of the war brought about few significant events, one of which was the recognition of the US Navy as a world-class fighting force and the excellent marksmanship of the US Marine Corps. Also the suckage that was the US Army, which is why Old Fuss n' Feathers had to kick them into shape between 1816 and 1861. It also solidified the border between the US and Canada.

Impressment did not end until the end of the Napoleonic Wars, FWIW, and then only because the Brits didn't need any more sailors to crew their ships against the French.

In short, no one really won and the Indian tribes were the only real losers.
