My own take on this was "This has nothing to do with me." This is a fight between two factions of the leftist coalition -- white feminist women and black and hispanic males. I think the woman was indeed harassed at several points in the video, but then, I have been repeatedly instructed that I am to never criticize any historically-oppressed minority's culture, and I'm also not permitted to have an opinion on anything that vaguely Affects Women's Health, Well-Being, or Dreams, so I am left without any voice here. (I suppose that the video should be taken as an indictment of the Designated Villain in all social dysfunctions, that is to say, White Males. But as almost no White Males appear in the video, I decline to accept that indictment.) The left will just have to resolve this feud among its constituent members itself. And they are indeed in a bit of a feud, Charles C.W. Cooke report. To be honest, I have "divorced myself from the problem," as neither I nor anyone in my cohort (that is, anyone I could be reasonably expected to socially chide into behaving better) does this. Ever. I've actually never seen it. Yesterday, the Root's Dion Rabouin dispensed with euphemism entirely, confirming that "some of the video’s intentional choices seem to play on the Birth of a Nation trope that white women simply aren't safe from sex-crazed black and brown men." How that’s for a thumb in the eye for the millions who shared the spot on their Facebook pages?I think there are actually some issues here worth discussing, such as different cultures' differing opinions on how forward men can/should be with strange women. We all have heard, of course, that some men in foreign countries are quite forward, for example. Mediterranean countries, largely, though not exclusively. We could talk about whether or not it's fair or right for the dominant culture -- which is a liberal, college-educated urban-oriented Northern-European White culture -- to impose its own mores on less-powerful undercultures. We could discuss whether it's entirely fair of women to expect that only attractive men will express interest in them. We could talk about these things, but we can't talk about these things, because we live in a world of Puritan Repressiveness and Offense-Taking. We cannot have any intelligent conversations whatsoever. We do not have discussions; we have Coordinated Group Accusations. We also have a lot of Coordinated Hysteria and Scalp-Hunting. So we can't talk about any of these things. The penalty for venturing an opinion that someone else disagrees with is potentially career-ending. So I really have nothing at all to say. These people made this world, in which there is no discussion, only accusation; in which there is no search for truth, only imposition of consequences; in which there is no thought, only political campaigning and recruitment of persons for purposes of ritualized hazing. I read a good piece by David French on Obama's insult of Netanyahu. I think it states things well. French states that the viciously trivial mode of college campus invective has infected foreign policy discussions; I would expand that and say it's infected every mode of discourse. For those who've lived under a rock for the past four-plus decades, the American academy has been characterized by two prime impulses: one substantive, the other stylistic. First, there's the substantive claim that the problems of the world can largely -- if not entirely -- be traced back to America's sins and the sins of our Western allies, most notably Israel. These sins have caused the peoples of the world to accumulate a long list of 'legitimate grievances,' and the problem of anti-American or anti-Israeli violence is therefore best dealt with by dealing with the underlying grievance... Next, there's the sophomoric, malicious style of campus rhetoric, where stigma is the preferred method of argument. It's hard to overstate the propensity towards name-calling even of "elite" academics, and the culture of the academy is one where groupthink is enforced and reinforced through vicious rhetoric. Their opponents can't be merely wrong. Instead they are racist, bigoted, homophobic, or -- despite professed love of the disabled -- "Aspergery." The arrogance is overwhelming, and the fake tough-guy posture of name-calling elitists is laughable to everyone but themselves. So this is a particularly nasty dispute between the stigma-flinging, groupthink-enforcement goonsquads of leftist identity politics; I say fuck 'em all, and let them destroy each other with their grotesque tactics. I'll let the people who live for Identity Politics Attacks & Recriminations do what they do best. I'll be over here, completely ignoring it all, waiting for the survivors to announce themselves. Here's my earlier comment on this topic:
This video has to be the biggest beyond-parody "own goal" self-immolation PR disaster of the year so far. In a lame attempt to make a point about purported sexual harassment, they ended up instead proving only one of two possible points: 1. Black (and New-Yor-Rican) men are sexist pigs, but white men are polite -- thereby aggravating existing racial stereotyping by the people seeing the video; OR (or should I say AND/OR) 2. The filmmakers are a bunch of racists, a fact which trumps their feminism. So, they just either declared themselves racists in public, or unwittingly proved that the "war on women" is being waged by minorities -- black men in particular. So, filmmakers: which do you choose? Option 1? Or 2? Or how about a little of both? Do they have a "Darwin Award" medal in the Culture Wars? Posted by: zombie at October 31, 2014 05:36 PM (K4YiS) 10

It was incredibly funny after the videographers suddenly realized they had inadvertently stuck their heads into the identity-politics hornets' nest. Wait a minute, nearly all the men shown behaving in rude and frightening ways here are black and Hispanic. WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU IMPLYING HERE?!?!?!?! ARE YOU SENDING SOME SORT OF A RAYCISS ELEVENTY DOGWHISTLE MESSAGE?!?!?! What followed were frantic assurances that, why yes, of course, there had been _plenty_ of cases of white men behaving crudely and making unwelcome advances. A ton of them! They purposely chose a white chick with a Mix-a-Lot-worthy BIG TUSH-y ASS so as to appeal the butt-lovin's dusky demographic.
That choice alone could be deemed racist. Why oh why chose the kind fo body black men love for this experiment? Hmmmm? Was this choice intentional, to entrap black men, or was it simply unconscious racism? And if they had chosen a heroin-chic skinny blond model-type, would the white hipsters have harassed her? Or did the filmmakers know that they'd get a lot less harassment action by appealing to white men, so they purposely enticed black men? INQUIRING MINDS DEMAND TO KNOW! You could say how they express interest.... I already spoke of this yesterday and earlier today. Some guy, riding by on a bike says Looking good, baby... while I was pumping gas in my car. But, it was creepy. I think of another case, where I had just come out of a wake, dressed in a somber suit, and suede pumps, and it was very snowy and icy out. My husband went to get the car so I wouldn't have to tackle the ice, or ruin my suede. A man came up to me, and asked if I needed an arm to my car. Big difference. Ace,
This won't amount to much on the Left. Doublethink insures that they will blame the designated enemy: White cis-hetero males (AKA, the "Kyriarchy"). They believe that any such conflicts (such as White women vs. non-White men) is due to those "Kyriarchs" instituting oppression via intersectional hierarchies. In other words, they get black men to oppress White women and White women to oppress men in order to have the non-"Kyriarchs" oppress themselves in some nefarious tyrannical plot. some were mild, yeah, but I do get the annoyance, because while no particular "mild" catcaller would be guilty of any major faux pas, you can see how the weight of so many sexualized remarks in the course of a day would get to somebody. A woman, I mean. One point I saw a leftist make that I thought made sense was this: Straight white guys would see the problem if you imagined yourself, a dude, walking through a gauntlet of gay guys, getting sexual bon mots tossed at you. You'd be kind of pissed off. Strangers would be forcing you to confront decisions you don't even want to think about. Plus, women are the weaker sex, so this is intimidating, too. this is the obvious objection here: Women don't want an end to all expressions of sexual interest, they just want an end to expressions of sexual interest from guys *below their status in terms of looks or socio-economic class.* That's something you really can't ask of someone -- you can't ask an ugly guy to just accept that he's ugly, or that he's low-rent, and has no chance with you, and ergo should not deign to speak with you. She was not dressed in a particularly sexy way. Curvy girls are *always* sort of sexy because you always see the curves but you can't blame that on them. She didn't do anything in particular to signal sexual availability. She's not wearing nightclub clothing. She's wearing standard hipster/student faux-proletariat clothing. Posted by: ace at October 31, 2014 05:47 PM (/FnUH) Speaking as a particularly curvy girl myself, bull. There are ways to dress that are modest, and what she was wearing wasn't it. Any clothes that are form-fitting are that way for a purpose, and it isn't to conceal her assets. Oh, I know, I'm just a big prude. But fashion being what it is, clothes are close-fitting, and they are that way so that curves will be shown. Most women's clothes are designed by gay men and fit women who have no breasts or backsides. Consequently, finding clothes that fit properly and don't hug those curves is nearly impossible. Just because what she is wearing is in fashion, doesn't mean it covers up the goodies. And so we damn the men who notice? OK. But then why are you wearing a short skirt (and lipstick and the rest)? So that people don't turn their heads and look at you? In order to make yourself look unappealing? Then who or what does your short skirt have to do with? Once again, the simplest SlutWalk sign raises the deepest questions. In this case, all that is missing to make everything clear is an emphasis on the final word in her message: "My short skirt, believe it or not, has nothing to do with you." In other words, she's dressing up to attract only those people who are in her league, but not you, you disgusting troll. I saw her in an interview. She cleans up pretty well. She made the point that she kept her mouth shut, eyes straight ahead and tried her best to send out signals that said "not interested." Sadly, that's not enough for some dullards. I don't think it is a race thing, I think it is a class thing. I used to work with a complete loser. Fat, stupid, reliably smelly, extremely hairy and seemly determined to wave to any female unfortunate enough to catch his gaze. The inevitable "Hey Vaaby!" would always follow. You aren't in the right neighborhoods! I think it's a cultural thing, like ace said, and I can tell you straight up that you are going to get a lot more catcalling in Hispanic neighborhoods. Black to a certain degree as well, but my experience is that the Latino men are more likely to shout out like that. I'm tall and redheaded, and I think that make its worse. Also, groups of men will do it often times in situations where individual guys probably wouldn't have. Safety in numbers or not wanting to get their man card yanked for not joining in, I don't know. I will say this; it bothered me a lot when I was a young girl and I am still not crazy about it, but I have also come to the conclusion that most of them are not trying to be assholes, they're just... not shy about letting you know how they feel. And they mean it as a compliment. The Hispanic ladies will just grin right back or cuss right back, depending on the situation. Definitely cultural. You can usually always tell the creeps and the creeps are almost some weird white dude who will fooking follow you all around the bookstore, or some yahoo in Home Depot who seems to magically turn up in every aisle you go to. Guys mostly don't get how annoying it is, because they'd be flattered in the same situation. And I didn't think she was inappropriately dressed at all. Hard wired into the male brain is some sort of algorithm that instantaneously computes the ratio of chest and hip size to waist. The formula scales for large women. Once that waist size falls under some percentage, every male notices, unless he's blind.

Hardwired into the brain. For survival purposes.
A couple of things. First, I can take any image of any 'plain jane' full body shot of a woman into Photoshop, click on 'liquefy' and push her waist in on both sides. She immediately goes from a 4 or 5 on the 'hotness' scale to at least a 7 or 8. Why is that? Second -- perhaps there is a survival message that is hardwired into male brains when confronted with such a woman. She has bosom and childbearing hips but does not seem to be eating enough. Perhaps she needs a different mate to provide for her? Posted by: SE Pa Moron at October 31, 2014 06:15 PM (zxQ4h) 202

She's not wearing nightclub clothing. She's wearing standard hipster/student faux-proletariat clothing. Posted by: ace at October 31, 2014 05:47 PM (/FnUH) My sis lives in NYC, is curvy, and has gotten plenty of catcalls in her time there. Last year we had fam visiting and were in Times Square; one of those annoying guys on every corner advertising a comedy show or whatever abandoned his post to follow her three blocks, asking for her number and for them to go have a good time and how attractive she was. In front of her fam. And this was in her grubby afterwork clothes, no makeup, not dolled up in any way. It finally took her telling him she was gay for him to back off. (She has not officially come out to those family members yet; I'm not sure if they thought she was lying to him or if they knew she was telling the truth, lol.) Was immensely unnerving and unasked for. That guy just happened to be black. Do I think that means that all black guys are rude pigs? No, because unlike the left I don't generalize all people in a group according to the worst examples of that group. The guys in her neighborhood that catcall her are black and latino because, guess what, she lives in a neighborhood with that as the majority ethnicities. If she lived in a different neighborhood it might be a different story. Short answer: the vid was not a gotcha vid, this does indeed happen in larger cities where you bump into a lot of people, some people are not so great, that is life. And watching the left eat each other over who is the more aggrieved and privileged here is popcorn worthy. Posted by: LizLem at October 31, 2014 06:16 PM (yRwC8) 205

The defendant took the stand and presented herself as a caring mother who would never consume alcohol now that she's pregnant. Her attorney asked her if she had kids and she named one daughter. I knew she had another daughter whose name was conspicuously absent. I asked who so and so was naming her of daughter. I asked why she left her out. She said because she didn't have custody. And then, over the vigorous objection of defense counsel, I asked if a court had entered a no contact order prohibiting her from contact order prohibiting her from contactIng that daughter and she was forced to admit it to be true. Her perfect mom persona was completely destroyed.

Decades ago a girlfriend told me on a trip to South America (possibly Central America) she and her female companion were continuously cat-whistled aggressively for the way they were dressed. Dressed normally, they were nonetheless taken as dressing to provoke sexual attention and are kindly obliged, in that culture.
This is why Middle Eastern women wear sackcloth. So it cannot be said they are inviting sexual attention. Oh, how we laughed. Now I see the way women are dressed for television and I'm all, "WOOT! Show me more of your tits!" I imagine myself dressed as provocatively to draw attention to my sexual bits. "Hellooooo, my eyes are up here!" "Yeah, but you're displaying your bewbs purposefully down here!" Were I to ignore your thoughtful cleavage then you'd become even more daring. As you do. pfffft to the whole thing. Let me weigh in on this. The catcalls of the bronzed Hispanic men express the sexuality of the moment on the hot city streets against the backdrop of American prudery as enforced the the norms of a culture that is afraid of looking at itself and seeing what is reflected in its own reduction of what it means to be human in its faulty institutions and recherche self-inceptions. To the extent that the brown man speaks to the white woman from within that which reinforces his browness the woman is not violated but elevated. Can they not see this?

-- It does happen, of course, just with much lower frequency. A lot of catcalling is done by men with mental problems or just really dumb men or men prone to criminality. Asian-americans have the lowest rates of criminal and anti-social behavior of the racial groups the govt tracks, so they harass women the least. That said, n my own extended family, the only guy I'd bet has said inappropriate things to women is actually asian. I don't know his exact diagnosis but he has some mild degree of retardation, I think, and he says inappropriate things and he likes women, but they don't like him since there's obviously something wrong with him. Americans don't do that. Not here, not anywhere I've lived, no matter what background from Basque to Shoshone, Zia to French to Mexican American. Posted by: kbdabear at October 31, 2014 06:39 PM (aTXUx) That's my conjecture for the failure of Air America. Dems tell each of their pressure groups whatever that group wants to hear, but the different groups have diametrically opposed interests (e.g., eco-nuts and union thugs). Usually the Dems get around this by meeting with each group out of earshot of the others, but with Air America they were in principle broadcasting to all of them, at the same time. The only way to avoid a train wreck was to make their shows so vapid and insipid that they didn't appeal to anybody. Posted by: Jay Guevara at October 31, 2014 06:43 PM (SLea8) 278

I wonder whether a similar experiment of an
attractive male (not necessarily straight) walking through gay neighborhoods would yield a similar number of catcalls and propositions. Would we find gay men to be more enlightened than the straight ones in the original video? Posted by: stuiec at October 31, 2014 06:50 PM (eetvJ) Homosexual men in groups sometimes get into that "outrageous queen" schtick that can be every bit as obnoxious as the guys in the video. I lived in a black neighborhood in a major city in the late 2000s that could be fairly called "ghetto." A good number of murders, drug arrests/raids, etc. The type of place where a 911 call meant the cops showed up with guns drawn, which happened once or twice at my house.
One of my roommates was a young, naive white girl. She really should not have been living there. She said that any time she walked down the street the denizens of that particular community absolutely bombarded her with comments, almost like it was automatic. This isn't news to anyone here, but there is an indisputable racial/cultural aspect to this controversy. Posted by: wte9 at October 31, 2014 06:58 PM (HRXlm) 328
@321 It is, though sane Utahs are doing their best to prevent their state turning into Colorado and SLC from turning into Portland. They say Mia Love's race is gonna be close, we'll see if she wins on Tuesday. If she does, canNOT wait to see the lefty heads explode there and the comments in the SLTrib.

As if women don't notice men. What type of male would women plunk down their dollars to see? Because I see that as the 'acid test'...
He'd be a fair representation of the 'Ken' doll. Taller then 'Barbie' so probably ~ six feet tall. No hair anywhere but on head, indicating early to late teens. Obvious muscularity, but not overly so. Slim waist -- probably about a ten or eleven inch difference between chest and waist --what fashion peeps call an 'athletic build'. In effect a 'Chippendale' male. In the obscurity and privacy of the club, the women let loose and fondle the males, make catcalls, perhaps remove undergarments and toss them at the males. But like the curvy woman in this video, the Ken is so far out of the realm of 'normalcy' that he attracts attention. On the street, women notice, but stay mum. Most white males have now been so brow-beaten by the feminists they keep silent. If anything the video showed that blacks and hispanics are the groups who the feminists should be showering their scorn. But I'm not gonna hold my breath for that to happen. >>Huh?
I'm talking government statistics. Asian-Americans have the lowest rates of crime and other anti-social behaviors like welfare use, high school dropouts, etc. It's not my opinion, it's just a fact. And so is Asia. It's not some genetic disposition, it's just guys being guys in the society they live in. Asians who come to America tend to be the high achieving types but much of Asia is an oversexualized cesspool with literacy rates that would make Americans despair. And they catcall the hell out of things. Ask any military guy who has ever been stationed in the Philippines. Guys of every socioeconomic and genetic pool are still guys. They may leery more discreetly at parties with finger sandwiches but the game is still on. Posted by: JackStraw at October 31, 2014 07:09 PM (g1DWB) 337

I didn't anything wrong with what most of the men said. I don't consider, "You are pretty!" or "Have a nice day!" sexual harassment. These men are just trying to get her attention. That is what men do, and any woman with a functioning brain figures out that there a class differences in how men approach women.
A few of them were creepy, like the guy who kept walking with her. Other than that, what is the point? Are lower-class men not allowed to speak to upper-class women? That seems to be the only message. Posted by: Jen at October 31, 2014 08:13 PM (msAGT) 344
I have been repeatedly instructed that I am to never criticize any historically-oppressed minority's culture, and I'm also not permitted to have an opinion on anything that vaguely Affects Women's Health, Well-Being, or Dreams, so I am left without any voice here.
Don't forget as well, that if a black male attacks you, if you successfully defend yourself, you will be deprived of your job, your economic future, and basically any quiet during the rest of your life. If you are unsuccessful in defending yourself, and the black male kills you, well, you win! Posted by: Null at October 31, 2014 08:28 PM (xjpRj) 345

That's because I was once a young girl in the big city tryin' to make it on my own. And had to walk a lot because I was poor and had no bus fare. It's not what it looks like. It's a manipulation and an imposition. I could explain more but I'm tired and I lost my car key in the front yard while I was putting out the tombstones. I agree with SarahW, because I was also a young girl in the big city once. One thing you can't see on the video is most of the men's faces. There's a difference between a nod and a quick "hello" when the guy just glances at you and smiles and moves(which I didn't mind) and a guy like Super Creepy Rob Lowe saying hello or you are pretty when his eyes are fixed on your boobs. As I said in a thread yesterday, it puts a woman in a bad situation, because I soon found that if I said hi back or responded in any way, the guy would take that as encouragement and follow me and keep up the banter. "You like me? You want to go for a drink? You got a boyfriend?" And that's annoying and can get scary. I think it's sometimes difficult for men to realize how quickly a woman can be reminded of the fact that she's physically weaker than most men. When you're followed by a guy pestering you and you can't shake him, you're suddenly intensely aware of being vulnerable. I had a godawful experience once when I was followed by 3 young thugs for about 5 blocks who were saying things to me that were a lot cruder than "you're pretty." And I was walking home from work in a suit, with a skirt on that was below my knees (this was the 80's) so I wasn't flaunting anything. By the time they decided to leave me alone, I was trembling. Remember, this usually happens to women who are alone. It never happens when you're with a guy, or even that much when you're with a friend or group of women. 95% of the time, it was a annoyance, not threatening. And I don't really know what any group can do about it. You can't pass a law saying men can't talk to strange women on the street! What I could do about it: stay out of shitty neighborhoods. And carry pepper spray. And try not to take it too much to heart. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at October 31, 2014 09:37 PM (+XMAD) 350

That was my situation also. I lived in a pretty iffy neighborhood in DC for a while - on Mass. Ave. NW near Logan Circle. I don't know what it's like now, but in the 80's, it was rough. I lived there because I didn't have a car and so wanted to live near my job which was on K St., within walking distance. And I couldn't afford to live in the nicer neighborhoods yet. When I could, I got the hell out of there. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at October 31, 2014 09:42 PM (+XMAD) 351

You don't see it but I do.
No, you don't. You claim you do, because you wish to stigmatize behavior with which you don't agree. Those are two wildly disparate truths. We live in a society where women think they have the right to do 100% of what they want, when they want and where they want, and that men should have to accommodate that 100% at the expense of the men not being able to do perfectly harmless things that they want to do. Sorry, but even the false equality of the U.S. means something other than 100%/0%. Posted by: Just A Guy at October 31, 2014 09:59 PM (CGzAz) 353
I love how the angry apologists are claiming the video is racist because there weren't enough white men caught on camera harassing the girl.
I lived in NYC for 15 years. I saw girls get harassed all the time while walking down the street, uptown, downtown, east side, west side, rich and poor neighborhoods. The harrassers were always non white. Sorry. That's what I saw. Posted by: Hamilton at October 31, 2014 10:01 PM (a3+wd) 354
I know it happens. I've never done it and I resolved some time ago to never feel guilty for that which I hadn't done.
Also, this is essentially an attempt to shakedown civilized males. Just as so many in your face confrontations with Christians try to pass themselves off as speaking truth to power, the truth of the matter is you don't do anything to address the people who are truly the problem because those people might hurt you or cut your head off or rape rape you. No, you browbeat those who will take it and hope that in the process they open their pocketbooks to you. Blue on blue make it continue until the last tranny standing. When you go to their site, they explain that there were lots and lots of white harassers. They didn't make it into the video because the guy editing the vid was a white male racist. Oh, there is no way that an empowered feminist can escape the evil patriarchy. Life is so unfair.

These comments demonstrate a problem that conservatives need to solve. Comment after comment talks about what we are 'allowed' to think or say. If this is a free country we are allowed to think or say nearly anything. The problem is that the left has achieved the power to punish dissenting opinion, even when the opinion is shared by 90% of the public. The punishment may take a legal form (lawsuit or IRS audit or criminal prosecution) but usually it is sufficient to mobilize private sector resources (TV, social media, journalism, word of mouth, employer) to get the offender in trouble with people who canhurt him. The most powerful censor is the voice inside us that tells us not to even think about expressing our 'politically incorrect' thoughts. If we are to vote for the GOP we must insist that theyuse their considerable power to undo this cripplingsituation. The only way to do it is to spread the word and place conditions on your vote and support for the GOP. And btw Israeloutlaws disagreement with a ratherlonglist ofpropositions that are dear to it and the Jewish community has played a prominent role in persuading the EU and evenAmerican legislators to endorse the idea of criminalizing speech. Historically, loyalty to Israel has not been a conservative tenet nor should it be. Posted by: peter at November 02, 2014 06:35 PM (AVEwg) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0467 seconds. |
