Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (17 Oct 2014)Greg Gutfeld made a salient observation the other day. He pointed out that liberalism thrives in times in which there are no crises. In times such as those, liberalism raises lightweight issues and gives them gravitas. School lunch programs, child obesity, the size of soda drinks, gay rights, free contraception, are their rallying "causes celeb". However, when crisis presents itself, we reap the consequences of liberalism in governmental leadership. More frequent now are the vapid responses to crisis led by the conveniently appointed, those "politically correctly" installed into position of power. The responses tend to be inept and politically expedient. Imagery, polls and elections are the focus rather than the required action and solution. Is seems to be contrary to their DNA to depart from the warm and fuzzy to the tactful, strategic and necessary. Winter Is Coming It's almost as if one of the symptoms of Ebola is an unaccountable urge to travel and spread the virus. And now we have a lawyer who is known as a political fixer of political problems being named the Ebola czar. Brilliant. Remember, everything is under control. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Purple Penguins and the Abolition of Gender
The Progressive march towards a 'non-gendered' world has been acceleration as of late. The terms 'Mother' and 'Father' are set to be purged from California law, the pronouns 'he' and 'she' can now apply to anyone, and even stating a baby's visually obvious gender is considered child abuse. The beauty of this word gamesmanship is that soon no one will be able to say anything about anything without violating a "law" and then selective enforcement will be efficiently used to sort out those that really need the re-education camps, the ones that survive the Ebola Games that is. Gutfeld piece:
When emotion is allowed to override whatever intellect said individual claims to possess, the results are always bad. Liberalism continues because the pain most people feel is too remote. In Michigan, we had over a week off from work, and that was everyone except emergency personnel, not just teachers. Everything was completely shut down. Even snowplows couldn't get through. There were 12 foot drifts, and cars were abandoned on the roads. They ended up clearing streets with front end loaders and road construction equipment. It was great. We cross country skiid to the closest store to stock up, and spent the time baking brownies and making chili. People with snow mobiles went from house to house asking if anyone needed prescriptions picked up. Good times. Posted by: nerdygirl at October 17, 2014 10:26 PM (zPwJq) 131

It's more than that. The public, for example, wants the southern border enforced. This administration is lazy -- it does no work unless forced to, by the press, over a period of several days. And it is fundamentally committed to Marxist PC, and will lie and cheat to make it happen, and only deviate from it when forced to by even more extreme pressures. The only true sin in this Administration is making the Head Narcissist look bad. When that happens is the only time you see forceful and rapid action. The problem in this state with "boutique distilleries" is the cost.
Something made out of animal feed and beet sugar shouldn't cost like fine calvados. Further, if terms like "oak" are used to described the likker it should be in fine phrases like, "It put me down faster than an oak barrel stave, but with less bruising." I admit, I have the refinement of something that should be first run through a pug-mill, but I also have standards. Low standards. Posted by: Kindltot at October 17, 2014 10:35 PM (t//F+) 169

Good times. The "how to restrain a woman " was meant to be humorous, but I'm kinda tired of the conceit that a 120 lb. woman can easily beat the crap out of a 180 lb. man.
Once in college, I was at a party and a guy there I knew fairly well, who was drunk and pretty despondent over his girlfriend leaving him, started ranting and talking crazy about how he was going to kill himself. He started running for the door. I grabbed his arm and he pushed me -with force. He was a thin guy (a runner) and I was in much better shape than I am now. I flew backwards and hit the wall with force and slid down on my ass. He said "Oh, God, Donna, I'm sorry" and came over and helped me up and apologized 10 million times. I didn't hold it against him. I knew he was basically a good guy. (And he didn't kill himself.) But I had a bump on the back of my head the next day. That made me realize that even with toned arms, I wasn't really capable of fighting an average-sized man who really intended to hurt me. This guy wasn't built like a linebacker and that push sent me flying. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at October 17, 2014 10:53 PM (+XMAD) 246

I'm not fond of game but that's because I've only had the game my mother cooked - and she didn't know how to cook it. It was always tough as hell.
But that was also true of her pork chops and steaks. The Greatest Generation was afraid of catching diseases from undercooked meat, so they cooked the hell out of everything. My father was disgusted when I took him to a steakhouse in Chicago and ordered my steak medium-rare. "That blood is going to make you sick," he told me. What my mother was was a great baker - I grew up with homemade bread, donuts, cakes from scratch. But cooking wise, she was a kitchen assassin . Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. Funny, because both my brothers get offended and angry when my sis and I laugh about mom's cooking. Well, mom did always like them more. Linda and I say "Remember her greasy soup (our term for her beef barley soup - she apparently never thought to skim the fat off of soup) And what about that awful liver and onions? Or the chili that was like tomato sauce and hamburger?" The boys (now in their 50's and 60's) don't like anybody disrespecting my mother - not even her daughters.
Good times. And The Salvation Army Band played, and the children drank lemonade, and the morning lasted all day.... Seriously, that sounds great, and I bet supplies were obtained, and prescriptions acquired, and much fun was had by all, while still getting vital tasks done as a community. The one thing you didn't need was government, neither "help" nor supervision. A deep snow in most cities, OTOH.... Posted by: Weirddave at October 17, 2014 11:33 PM (9422s) 357

That made me realize that even with toned arms, I wasn't really capable of fighting an average-sized man who really intended to hurt me. This guy wasn't built like a linebacker and that push sent me flying.
That's right, men are just stronger than women, physically. That's why for many millennium mankind has been evolving social codes that restrain men and protect and elevate the status of women. Feminists now want to destroy that, and I say it's at their peril. Example: The current woman's world record in the 400 meter dash is 47.60 seconds. That's the fastest woman in the world. A high school boy ran the same race in 45.19 seconds in 2012. Physical differences between the differences exist. Denying it helps no one. Use butter with mule deer, but make sure you clean and cool the carcass well before hand. Most people who have bad venison are horrible at field dressing and even sometimes don't cool it out. That makes the meat gamey. Bad venison is solely due to a bad dress and an incompetent hunter.
Venison is best cooked in butter as there is little intramuscular fat. Garlic and butter and pepper is all you need Posted by: Inspector Cussword at October 17, 2014 11:53 PM (vmltA) 389

Essentially an English flour, eggs and milk based muffin served with drippings or gravy. I don't make them, but instead much prefer an American popover. The lack of platinum albums has a lot to do with the change in how the top pop music listening demographic gets their music. It's been changing for at least a decade:

When you do it properly, you will want to waste as little of the meat as possible on such processing. Jerky is for tough cuts of meat. 426 -- weft cut-loop -- When I was (much) younger, my mother would cook it once in a while.
Most of the time, we'd just cut it up for sandwiches... ...I was rather fond of it; very firm, but tasty. She didn't do anything special to it, just browned the sides and bottom, then put in a covered roaster and cooked it in the oven. I probably should ask her for cooking instructions and write it down. I do know it's something you have to get from a butcher's shop... it isn't something you can pick up just anywhere. Posted by: CPT. Charles at October 18, 2014 12:28 AM (lJaja) 447
Yorkshire pudding is wonderful. So is rare roast beef. I was once treated to dinner at Simpson's, a restaurant in London that serves traditional English dishes (couldn't have afforded to go there on my own) and it was terrific. I heard that an old restaurant in London called Rules serves game - grouse and venison - and is also great, but I didn't go there. I think it's the run-of-the mill crap you find in London that gives English cooking such a bad name. The aristocrats didn't eat shit.

"Will the Dems or the Drought cause more people to leave California?"
California droughts don't last. At least they have not in modern recorded history. Within two or three years, the state will most likely have more water than it can safely store. What will last for California will be (a) the third-of-a-trillion dollar public sector pension bomb, (b) "capital appreciation bonds" for public infrastructure, (c) soaring energy costs thanks to "green, renewable" power, (d) a completely failed public education system from pre-K through grad school, and (e) the worst regulatory climate for private business in all fifty states, bar none. Other than that? We're doing great. Killer diller, dude. Posted by: torquewrench at October 18, 2014 12:37 AM (noWW6) 458

We're talking about pie? Yummm. My grama made the best. Thankfully, I have her crust recipe and it turns out perfectly for me. My faves were her pecan and "apple cream". The pecan I can do, but I don't have the recipe for her apple cream... I've searched for it online and can't find it. The sugar would settle to the bottom so there was a layer of that, then the apples were in milk, and the top would brown and bubble. No top crust. Delicious. I make a regular apple that is so good I try not to make it very often, darn calories, lol.

I use an oil crust for both pot pies and pumpkin pies. I learned crust from my mom, and though she's been gone for 9 years and I still miss her and her cooking, she made a pastry crust you could shave with. So I make oil crust instead.
I make pumpkin pie from puree'd pumpkins and I like to use my own because I can. I freeze the puree in red solo cups that hold 2 cups. So you defrost the puree and mix in: 2/3 C brown sugar 1/2 tsp ginger 2 eggs, beaten 2/3 C dry milk 1/2 tsp salt any spices you feel like. and bake at 350F until done in the middle. I've never been a condensed milk baking fan. Posted by: Kindltot at October 18, 2014 12:54 AM (t//F+) 496

The Gutfield Piece points out why liberals can't run things forever: they screw up things badly enough that there is always a disaster - the 1918 Spanish Flu, the rise of Nazis and Imperial Japan - the Korean War - Vietnam - the Carter Malaise, and now President Ebola.
These real disasters require conservative thinking and government to straighten out. Conservatives do that then the idiot light-weights take over again and the cycle repeats. Posted by: An Observation at October 18, 2014 01:38 AM (ylhEn) 549

I have an aunt Beverly who, when I was growing up, was famous for "the Bev Buffet" -- like getting a single large pizza for everyone when we came by (that would be four adults and three kids). We'd all joke about it as we ate our "pre-dinners" before we went to their house...
Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 01:39 AM LOL, I had 2 aunts like that. When they finally gave Grandma relief at family dinners in hers 90s it was a huge change. Went from Grandma's plenty to the aunts...I want my husband to lose weight so all portions must be microscopic. It just got to be too funny for my generation. This is one of those things with food. We get trained when we are young on our likes. Thanksgiving at anyone else's house is just not as good as when mom made it. I'll always want a comfort food they don't make.
Posted by: Swatara at October 18, 2014 12:20 AM (REFX3) Perhaps in some cases. But my mother was a terrible cook. One year she tried to cook the turkey in the microwave and it basically crystallized. So we started having Kentucky Fried Chicken for Thanksgiving...until they weren't open on Thanksgiving anymore. The first year that happened, we had fried eggs for Thanksgiving dinner. Subsequent years were...worse. Long story short, I had to learn to cook for myself, starting from square one. My wife, being Italian, also did not have a lot of experience with the traditional Thanksgiving menu. Now we brine the turkey and then slow roast it in the oven, make our gravy from scratch, and experiment with different approaches to mashed potatoes. Our current favorite involves using cream cheese and butter. Posted by: CQD at October 18, 2014 01:59 AM (eCKON) 559
Remember a couple of years ago when they banned an illegal alien costume? It of course was a space alien, you know, from mars. But banned it was. So, now it's 2014 and we will have ebola costumes, or will we? Will the powers that be decide you can't do that because it's, you know, racist.? And don't get me started on sexy costumes, I have grandaughters that are 11 and 8.

Had another pollster call me today. First question: "With which ethnic group do you identify -- just stop me when I say...."
"I don't answer racist questions." [banter follows] Second question: "Do you consider yourself to be Hispanic?" "That's another racist question." Bunch of questions later, "OK, for classification purposes, can I get your age?" "Old." "Ummmm....I'm looking for two numeric digits. Are you 18 to 21...." "Just 'old'." "Mmmmm....[muttered, softly]....I'll just put 50." [very good guess, but probably for the wrong reasons -- most likely the 20-something poll-taker thinks 50 is old.] A little at a time.....oh, and from her speech patterns, it seems she's used to telephone numbers that go XX-XXXX-XXXX instead of (XXX)XXX-XXXX. I asked her where she was actually calling from and she refused to tell me, trying to tell me that the company she was calling for was HQ'd in Boise. So, then, I told her why. Still no luck. So I am writing a story. Aiming for comic and all. But it has to start with a character finding this web-site and ordering their product. This has always been an awesome source of cultural and culinary collision. Posted by: torquewrench at October 18, 2014 02:10 AM (noWW6) There are a couple of food-related memes that I've been spreading for years. One of which is that the preparation of food to be tantalizing to the senses is actually of interplanetary origin, and was carried to earth on a meteor that landed near Florence, Italy, somewhere around the time of the Etruscans. From there it spread in ripples across Europe, being partially blocked by the Alps and nearly thwarted at the English Channel. Another is my story about fine teas and tea blends, which the fiancee used to great effect in her recent travels. As I tell it, there is a huge tea warehouse near London that is mainly responsible for the worldwide distribution of tea (a relic of the Empire). In it, bales of tea from all over are wheeled in a constant stream to a room of experts. One expert uses a special tool to core out a small sample from the bale; this is handed off to another expert who crumbles the sample in his fingers, sniffs it, occasionally infuses it in water -- but not always -- most of the time it is merely thrown aside....and discusses the results from the next official; the final official consults the great book in which tea demand and supply are reconciled and issues determinations. A bale comes in, the sample is taken, it is evaluated, its particulars are reviewed, and the verdict is: "this is fine Indian tea, let it be sent to our friends in London." The next bale comes in: "this is fine Kenyan tea, let it be sent to our friends in Madras." Another bale: "this is middling Indian tea, ship it off to Gloucester." This continues throughout the day, until the hour grows late....and then the Lords of Tea say, "we're done for the day, sweep all that stuff off the floor, ship it to America, and turn off the lights." 579 -- Anna -- Kinda sorta... but not. When you consider that the main character is a 7(?) year-old girl, and details her view of the world (admittedly just a very large forest).
It's a 'kids anime', sorta... kinda hard to explain, too many different parallels to explain properly. You'll have to watch it yourself to understand. Bottom line: Ghibli fans will love it, and they can plunk their kids down in front of the tube and not have worry for a moment about what they're gonna see. It sorta has the feel of those animes made back in the 80's that were based off the 'classic' stories (Anne of Green Gables, etc.). E.G.--utterly 'family friendly'. Watch it and you'll understand what I'm trying to get across... Posted by: CPT. Charles at October 18, 2014 02:43 AM (lJaja) 588

Another favorite is to take a real place -- http://peasoupandersens.net/ -- conflate it with the intro to the Beverley Hillbillies -- http://tinyurl.com/ppb3btz -- and then graft it into a Bond villain's lair. I've thoroughly infected the fiancee with this one to the point where she did a Toastmasters speech on it. Seems that the original restaurant in Buellton -- known as "the font" -- has a subterranean vault guarded by soldiers in futuristic jumpsuits where a crack in the wall oozes pea soup. A secret factory complex then captures the soup, cans it, and ships to grocery stores throughout the state. Buckets of the soup are also regularly hauled to the restaurant above through a rough shaft coarsely drilled through the native rock. Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 03:07 AM (T1005) 594

I'm personally a big fan of bacon crumbles and diced ham mixed into the soup -- as well as grinding fresh pepper onto the surface until it's nearly black. The Font has a "play with your soup" add-on that also includes croutons (eh...) and cheese (???).
At the restaurant, it's served with an odd sliced bread that contains cheese and poppy seeds -- as well as a cracker that strongly resembles Ry-Krisp, and sides of butter. For me, the little ritual involved is adding ham and bacon, then stirring in, then peppering the top, then adding croutons, then thoroughly buttering the bread and dipping until the butter partially melts. You then eat the bread to new butter and repeat until the soup is cooled enough to snarf down by itself, alternating with the goat food. Oh, and that's another story.....the LA Zoo's petting zoo -- which, like many, is full of goats -- used to sell Ry-Krisps to feed the goats with. Took me years to figure out that they were ordinarily a people food. Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 03:56 AM (T1005) Posted by: CPT. Charles at October 18, 2014 04:05 AM (lJaja) 611

Please tell me that Paul being off a ventilator is good news. Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 04:45 AM (T1005) 621
618 Carol, I'm assuming that was because Paul's doing better and not a withdrawal of care?

Cthulhu,
I used to love Reggiano Parmesesn cheese & now for over one year it's not very good. There was a new Whole foods opened innChaelestown Massachusetts in late August or early September & it's not as good. I asked man at that store & he said it's been the same. I went to one that has been open for years & told experienced man at cheese counter that taste wasn't quite right. .man told me that so R idiotic group made them h & cows had to ear environmentally new grass. If you used to buy Parmesesn Reggjiano cheese I suggest you try small piece (if you grate it) or small container if you are like me & buy grated Reggianio Parmesean cheese. It's not worth price now because cows had to eay new grass! Posted by: Carol at October 18, 2014 04:55 AM (sj3Ax) 625

Posted by: Conservative Crank at October 18, 2014 04:47 AM (d7H2D) Madness also furnishes its own solitude, even within crowds. One of the reasons that I never dropped acid is that I looked at the world inside my head and thought, "I never want to go there alone." I am extremely grateful that I can socialize here in the dark hours. Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 04:58 AM (T1005) 626

It's part-and-parcel of the style of cheese, it's been done for several hundred years without incident, but they just decided that it's illegal because they're not sterile. Hey, guess what -- cheese becomes cheese through bacterial action.....of course it's not sterile! Posted by: cthulhu at October 18, 2014 05:01 AM (T1005) 627

Give Hank a hug for me. We were supposed to meet in Boston Labor Day weekend but I had too many new things going on & didn't want to leave someone here alone & he & his wife had to go to daughter's apartment to wait for Comast cable to show & it was hottest day of entire summer. Cthulhu,
I'm sorry, it's dark out but warm here. I went outside to sweep and/or pick up leaves from rose beds, maple tree leaves. The nurse said Pail was able to keep his airway open to breathe on his own. My nephew, his son, works at hospital as Certified Nursing Assistant & my neice met me at ICU Tuesday. I told her & she knows her brother doesn't return calls. I sent text on Wednesday to tell him to cut Paul's nails if & when he is back at nursing home. I don't send text messages & was shocked that he replied "of course, auntie'" I don't know if his mother yelled at him or if he heard something when Paul was brought in. Paul Jr. works overnight in ER. He's replied several times & he's been to see his father every day. He lives within 5 minutes of hospital walking. I haven't been to that hospital since 1997 & it took me longer to find area for visitor parking than finding hospital. My neice went there to see me, not Oaul. If Conservative Crank is still around, he can confirm they have to be sedated to tolerate ventilator. I'm going to wait until,8 am to call & ask how Paul is doing. Thank you. Did someone say my name?? I didn't sleep much. My youngest has a cold. He actually had a great night, but since he fell asleep on the couch, I slept on the loveseat. Not comfy. Tossed and turned, worried the cats who kept checking on me. Since he was up at 5am yesterday, I'm so far behind on sleep that I will probably conk out this afternoon. Which would be much easier to do if my husband were in town... Posted by: Mama AJ at October 18, 2014 06:56 AM (0xTsz) 650

Nah, too long to one finger type on the fone. After the game, drive for an hour... ride for an hour to St Joe for little gig. Won't get home till tomorrow evening due to birthday dinner for good bud in T-town. I'm not too old for this shit. I'm not too old for this shit. The cat has found a noisy toy to play with next to the boy. What a stinker. Well, he's been asleep since 8:45 last night after 2 naps, so I guess that's enough sleep! Posted by: Mama AJ at October 18, 2014 07:04 AM (0xTsz) 653

Thank you, VIA & Mama AJ,
My brother has almost died at least 20 times since March 30, 2013 & one of these days he's not going to be able to rebound I wass worried Monday when the hospital told me they were going to keep in before 9 am & to call back in an hour. Noon n Woman said he was in ICU & tried to put me through to nurse & came back to tell me which doctor would call. He's a quadriplegic from multiple strep infections. They took far too long to do full body MRI & found infection was also in cervical spine (neck) & that's what caused, I believe & none has refuted it, that caused it. It's took 8 days after he was removed from vent in April last year before they did MRI & foiund (?) infection was in cervical spine & he has accesses in it.
