New York Daily News Cover Blasts Obama
Update: At Congressional Hearings, Panel Says 100-150 People From Ebola-Infected Countries Enter the US, Per Day

Everyone's thinking it. They blast it in 44-font type.

Via Twitchy:

Their editorial on #EbolaCare is here.

The American health-care system’s failure to prepare for Ebola became even more terrifyingly evident with the revelation that a Dallas nurse traveled by air after treating a patient who ultimately died from the virus.

Amber Joy Vinson began running a fever the day after her flight, putting her on the edge of communicability when she crowded among fellow passengers. Tests later confirmed that she carried the lethal microbe.

Still struggling to get command of the country’s response to Ebola more than six months after the current outbreak started in West Africa, Centers for Disease Control Director Thomas Frieden was left to spell out a principle that should have been set weeks or months ago -- and backed up with stringent enforcement.

...

Later on Wednesday, after cancelling a congressional campaign trip to Connecticut, President Obama said that the U.S. would become more aggressive in coordinating the national response to Ebola, including sending a CDC team to any hospital with a confirmed Ebola case.

But, by stopping short of issuing mandatory protocols, the President again fell back on the catch-as-catch-can system that produced such disastrous results in Dallas. He did so at the peril of health-care providers and the public -- because trust that individual hospitals here, there and everywhere would perform superbly is decidedly misplaced.

...

Neither Obama nor Frieden had the sense to issue directives with the firm, clear quality of standards sought by National Nurses United, representing thousands of nurses across the country.

The webinars the bureaucrats have posted for health-care professionals to watch (on their own time, if they feel like it) specify that the personal protective equipment is best utilized by "dedicated staff with years of training," per the Daily News.

We have "dedicated staff with years of training." They're at the various speciality infectious disease treatment centers, such as the CDC's unit at Emory, or the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

And where were they when ebola came to America?

This is the bureaucratic mindset in practice.

A bureaucrat sends out a memo, an email, and tells people "Follow the below protocols in ebola cases" and considers his job done.

Hey, he sent out a memo. That's his job. Sending out memos. Can't say he didn't do his job.

Here's how a non-bureaucrat views this situation:

We have a serious public health crisis. We have known since March that ebola was back, and in subsequent months the disease infected people at an exponential rate. As full-blown epidemics do.

They suffered a 70% death rate for ebola infections in West Africa. (Here in the States, supposedly we will only have a 50% death rate-- but I'm not confident that the "experts" are right about that.)

Now, given the fact that ebola is raging across West Africa, killing thousands of people, would anyone who is serious about epidemic containment think, back in, say, June, "Well, we sent out a memo and posted an instructional video. Our work here is done."

No. Back in June, the CDC should have offered hospitals a major crash course in ebola containment. They should not have relied upon their previous memos. They should have actually checked and followed up with hospitals to ensure that people knew at least the basics of containment.

And when Duncan was diagnosed with ebola, they should have sent out a team of experts to oversee the hospital's handling of the matter or simply taken over treatment of Duncan themselves.

After disaster has already struck -- and after six months of the disease spreading exponentially -- the Commander in Golf Togs finally announces:

President Obama said that the U.S. would become more aggressive in coordinating the national response to Ebola, including sending a CDC team to any hospital with a confirmed Ebola case.

Congratulations on doing on October 15th what you should have done on March 25th.

Meanwhile, Hot Air notes that the LA Times is also complaining about this bumbling Keystone Cops performance.

The LA Times:

Even as U.S. health authorities continue to tell Americans not to worry about the Ebola virus, their assurances are being undercut by the increasingly obvious deficiencies in domestic planning. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has repeatedly been forced to back away from his calming assertions that U.S. hospitals were ready for the disease and that the nation’s quarantines were more effective than those in Africa and would keep any infected people at home.

We've now seen what happens when the nation is faced with one ebola patient.

Ed asks: What happens when there's ten?

Liberia is on the edge of collapse. If the economy simply stops, millions of people will have no food, and furthermore, they'll be in a deadly hot zone.

At some point, if this contagion is not halted where it is the most widespread, we will be faced with thousands of people very rationally trying to get the hell out of Liberia.

Unfortunately, many of them will be infected, so their flight will serve no purpose except to put other populations at risk.

I'm of course hoping we can stop ebola from spreading in Liberia -- but at the current time, cases are increasing, and increasing at a rate of one doubling every three weeks.

Update: What if ten people come at once?

How about this: What if 100 actual ebola cases come over the course of 2-3 days?

Rep. Cory Gardner: (Dr. Frieden) I think you mentioned there were approximately 100 to 150 people a day coming into the United States from the infected areas.

Dr. Tom Frieden: That’s my understanding, yes.

Gardner: ANd, Mr. Wagner you admitted we're screening 94% of those people?

John P. Wagner: As of today that covers about 94%.

Gardner: So if 94% are being covered, that means somewhere between two and three thousand people a year are coming into this country without being screened from the infected areas?

1, I don't believe the 94% figure like I've come to disbelieve the "extremely low probability" claims, and 2, that "screening" now consists of two ineffectual steps: taking someone's temperature by an inaccurate remote sensor, and asking them where they've been the past 21 days.

Thomas Eric Duncan passed his temperature check and furthermore lied about whether he'd come into contact with ebola.

So, supposedly, 94% of arrivals from ebola infected countries are being put through multilayered screening, neither part of which works.

Oh, by the way, we now know you can actually have a fever and also be at high risk for ebola and yet still get on a plane.

Communicate, pull out your party piece

State your case with black or white
But when one little cross
Leads to shots, grit your teeth
You run for cover so discreet
Why don't they

Do what they say
Say what you mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong
I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another

I heard some of Obama's speech last night. Bland, blithering platitudes about ebola that anyone familiar with the news knows. Great use of the bully pulpit.

Also, I am among those who is pretty sure that the conventional wisdom is insufficient. I would rather have our premises questioned than be non-reassuringly reassured.

they are going to legally, mandatorily, quarantine returning military from the region

they have the authority, but will not legally andmandatorily quarantine health care professionals who came in contact with infected patients

the medical professionals get to self monitor and self quarantine

and they get to spread it

see, the constitutional scholar in chief is not worried about the legalities of quarantining the troops.

but rather than exercise his power as executive, and ban flights and order legal mandatory quarantines, he would rather dither.. And vote present. And shift the blame to other people. He would rather act like the professor in the faculty lounge

and this is the deadly story of Obama

100 So the government have now commissioned a study, to learn why a fleet of planes that the USA bought for the Afghan Air Force at a cost of 486 million dollars have now all been sold off for scrap, yielding proceeds of 32 thousand dollars.

Let me take a wild stab at a guess here.

The government study is probably NOT going to conclude that the source of this colossal waste was... government.

So, further, on the subject of government waste, anyone remember the colossal amount of money that the feds poured into "bioterrorism preparedness" after 9/11 and the anthrax mail attacks?

Where did all of those uncountable billions of dollars go?

A pandemic and a deliberate release of a bioweapon have very considerable overlap in terms of how they spread, and how they have to be countered.

And yet it appears that this massive flood of public money was poured out, and then totally evaporated, and left no trace.

In terms of producing any durable, capable, organized means of response to rapidly spreading infections, whether naturally occurring or deliberate, the country is back to starting from near scratch.

Top. Men.

I don't blame you for mistrusting the experts, but look at the cases so far. Of those deliberately brought in from Africa, already sick, two are basically out of the woods; one (we're not hearing much about) is in very dicey shape but still hanging on after a month.

Then we have the three cases we weren't expecting (but damn well should have been). Duncan died, and infected two others (that we know of). One of these has been upgraded to Good condition; the other, it's too early to say but she's getting the best care I know of.

With due caution about the statistics of small numbers, that's six patients so far. One died, one might very well die, and for one it's too early to say but I bet, and hope, she lives.

Based on patients where authorities were able to trace infection dates, incubation rates, etc. Most Ebola victims are dying in the bush somewhere. 164 125 It's obvious that the Obama Administration is as interested in keeping Ebola out of this country as they are interested in offshore drilling. Lots of bureaucratic window dressing, but no effective action.

I'm not even puzzled by that. I AM puzzled at how they haven't done much of anything to stomp out the outbreak in West Africa.

Let's keep in mind that this administration has a history of trying to intentionally create a crisis (Fast and Furious) comes to mind, has literally been arrogant enough to say "Never let a crisis go to waste", and that the explicit strategy of Fabian Socialists involves creating upheaval so that they can remake America into their socialist Utopia (in other words, to "transform America").

177 First off, all of these seemingly precise and finite limits being assigned to Ebola are all speculative. Based on patients where authorities were able to trace infection dates, incubation rates, etc. Most Ebola victims are dying in the bush somewhere. If you think gripping a handrail with "Ebola fluid" on it will kill you in three hours and be harmless in 4 hours, you're basing that on nothing but anecdotes. Same with the 21 day (or 42 day) "clear" period. Feel free to bathe in their fluids on day 22 or day 43, I'll wait until there's a bit more evidence in.

Obama has politicized things so much, every agency is now a political arm of the DNC. 237 I mentioned this yesterday and earlier today, but got busy and didn't have a chance to follow up.

Why doesn't our team, especially Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, step up to the plate and declare that the CDC and the Obama administration are incompetent?

Perry can bring in private sector experts, make preparations for more patients, put in common sense protocols, restrict travel, in short do everything the federal government should be doing.

Show leadership. Give the people confidence that top men are in charge.

This would do more to swing people to the right and reclaim Perry's spot in the succession to president than anything else.

If Romney did went to the microphones in the same sense for the country, rallying private enterprise to establish isolation units, experts and protocols, he would further the idea that it's not a bad thing to have competent people in charge.

Use the crisis to show people what the difference is between a liberal and a conservative.

Why will this be different? And the asshats in Congress have done NOTHING to fix the VA and will do NOTHING to fix the CDC.

They think they can wait this out. its a "political storm", they think. Its the midterms, and all the political fever that comes with midterms, they think.

When people are dying in the streets maybe they will finally realize the difference.

Half an hour later, he was back. Only about 25% of the school was now on fire, but he announced, 'They lost it.' They did. It burned completely to the ground. By morning, just a pile of smoking rubble.

328 199 from DailyKos: "Testimony from public health officials in the Senate a few weeks ago and subsequent media follow up has pointed out a serious deficit for public health funding. In fact, NIH Director Francis Collins said, point blank "if we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would've gone through clinical trials and would have been ready." These reports led House Democrats to call for a hearing on the lack of funding for the Ebola crisis."
_______________________________________

What utter bull$hit. During that "10-year slide" the CDC's budget nearly doubled. They've had billions to spend on developing a vaccine, and they've pissed the money away on anti-smoking ad campaigns, bike paths, studies on domestic violence, anti-obesity campaigns and a mountain of other irrelevant PC $hit. And for fiscal year 2014, the Republicans in congress gave the CDC even MORE money than Obama had requested for it in his budget.

It is ludicrous for these idiots to try and blame their gross incompetence and their complete lack of preparation for this very foreseeable situation on a lack of money. It's not money the CDC lacks -- it's f*cking common sense.

330 The US Army and USMC have NBC response teams complete with decontamination showers, etc. They've had these for decades.

How is it that the CDC hasn't lobbied congress to have 100 or more Mobile Critical Isolation and Decontamination facilities built, and stored all around the country?

The nurses in Dallas should have been trained by the crew of one of these vehicles, within 24 hours of confirmation.

The nurses in Dallas should have come out of the Ebola room/ward, right into the decontamination showers (in the portable unit) and been sprayed down before they so much as touched a glove to take it off.

Who's going to pay for all of this kind of thing? We are. And we will gladly pay. THIS is what taxes are for. THIS is the first job of our government - defend the nation.

Not study fat lesbians. Not build 50 foot video screens. Not name facilities after senators.

Our president should be impeached, yes, but he's hardly the only one. There are MD's in congress, for crying out loud. Surely they have full knowledge of the influenza's and plagues that have decimated... no, decimated means "10%," have TRIPLE AND QUADRUPLE DECIMATED whole nations.

If nothing else, surely they knew that ebola, anthrax, and so many other horrible diseases can and will be weaponized - and will find their way into the hands of the lunatics like ISIS.

Congress is shameful. They have thrown our children under the bus, just to secure their own power.

Let's see how this plays out. Let's pray that it stops soon.

337 "What % of that Dallas hospital staff are now at home under quarantined -- it's 50-70 people, right?"

Dr. Betsey McCaughey quoted a figure that said that based on the Duncan case, it takes 20 healthcare workers to handle one Ebola victim.

With the majority of those HCWs being highly trained, not easily replaced intensive care specialists.

And 2 of the 20 were infected with Ebola themselves in the process. So, a 10% rate.

This _so_ does not scale.

Numbers like that mean that if there is an outbreak with just a few thousand Ebola victims nationwide, the USA's entire hospital system goes on diversion.

The same thing is true with chemical reactions. You've got seconds to deal with a reaction that is about to take off. Look at the ceiling of any synthetic chemical laboratory or the upper reaches of any fume hood and see the shit that has been shot up there.
Experienced chemists keep an ice bucket to hand to slap under a flask to buy them time to figure out how to defuse the situation. If you don't have one ready, prepare to see green (or whatever color) shit dripping from the ceiling. Again.

356 I see some news outlets are mentioning the bridesmaids and other contacts, including Ebola Amber's Mama (who flew on commercial plane to Dallas and now back in Ohio?) are in voluntary quarantine. We know how well that works!

But no one but the UK Daily Mail is mentioning that Ebola Amber had a slight fever before she went to Ohio. Oh, and that retail store in Cleveland where she and five other friends visited, as otherwise she felt so crappy she stayed home...well, Cleveland won't tell (from another source) the name of the retail store as they don't want either panic or the store "blackballed." Great! This story just gets better and better and better. While Mama may not have been contagious nor maybe will ever get ebolized, she flew on two flights. Retail store contaminated maybe by a sneeze or maybe not. I know if I was shopping I'd want to know if I needed to watch for symptoms, no?

For the eleventyith billionith time, here, once again, is the story all morons and Ace and the press in America should read and question if TWO flights of passengers should be warned of Ebola Amber, not just the one flight. But the additional flight from Dallas to Ohio on 10/10/14:

http://tinyurl.com/pe8qs9c

Think of this, my morons: possibly two plane-loads of people, crew, and those at gates, restaurants, etc on the two days she traveled could have been exposed. Ok. Let that set in: potentially over 200 passengers alone if it is correct and she had a fever for both flights (as many, many viruses are considered infections with a 'low grade" temp). You with me? Over 200 people....and one entire flight, if this story is true, not knowing they were exposed yet and to be watching for symptoms.

Meanwhile, the genius MENSA CDC is asking for passengers on the flight from Cleveland to Dallas on the Frontier flight to call them at 1-800-YOU-May-have-ebola please watch for symptoms. Now, you'd "think" a government agency, with all the power of the world (as the CDC is in control of flight bans, not preznit Le Roi)...well, you'd "think" they could acquire the flight manifest and notify these patients, no? Vs hoping every single patient on that plane reads the news and sees the number and will call. So, meanwhile, Joe the Dude Who Buys Lobsters With Foodstamps is off surfin or something as he took the flight from Dallas to his lair in California. He starts feeling puny but tries to shake it off with his medical marijuana, obtained by his food stamps. Has one of his lobster rolls and starts puking blood. Whoa, he says, that was one bad lobster, dude. He smokes some more weed. Falls asleep. Goes surfin but has a really bad day as he keeps crapping in the water. Bummer. Feels really gnarly at this point and staggers home to his condo (paid for by parents). Erupts in dual projectile vomit and exploding diarrhea just as his roommate and ten other dudes arrive for the bong party. They freak out but don't call the ambulance as, buzz-kill. They roll him up in the rug and party on as no one has heard of ebola and if they had they would think it is a new brand at the medical marijuana store from Fiji.

The sheer and total incompetence of the CDC, to place blame, then not, then place blame again, then, today, say "they are open for ideas" when this expertise is what they are paid and trusted for. Well, for once I have no words, my flying monkeys. We are all on our own until a travel freaking ban which will probably be Texas before countries in W. Africa.

May the force be with you that is neither projectile or exploding out an orifice. xoxo

We do have the best facilities, doctors etc. in the world, but it is fragile, and when it comes to risking exposure to family, healthcare workers will start to stay home, there aren't enough beds in containment units, and people will stop coming to the hospital for normal stuff.

I live a few blocks from a hospital in central NJ, my wide is having a baby in mid december, am I going to take her there for the c-section and 4 days of hospital stay. 400 I'd be damned curious to know the number of people their vaunted ebola screening has actually stopped from flying to the U.S. Barring those visibly bleeding, I'd guess near zero. Of course, they'd never willingly admit the true number, but I'd like to see the question asked of the official White House bullshitter du jour.

406 The bureaucracy is infested with leftists.

Leftists have a sense of entitlement, and the concept of a meritocracy (ie, having to do your fucking job or pay the penalty) is anathema to them.

They look around themselves and enjoy the perks, the benefits, and are secure because they've built the system to never demand that price for failure. They spend the money on toys, pamper themselves, tick the boxes on the forms and go back to downloading porn because they know they'll never get fired even if they DO get caught someday.

One end of the bureaucracy protects the other, and they have a good laugh over pulling the wool over the eyes of the rubes back home while they live like kings. The only time they're efficient or innovative is when a small-government grass-roots movement comes along that threatens their gravy train, and then its full-bore assassination and cover-up across the whole corrupt power structure.

So when you get a real-world threat, they'll cover it up as long as possible, deflect, BS, lie, obfuscate and eventually just let it explode. And they still won't pay a price, and they'll continue with their boutique issues and make-work and keep stacking the deck to protect that sweet money that comes with no strings.

Think about it. It wouldn't work. Explosived are nothing but very hot, expanding gases. Extreme heat would kill most of the virus. And a truck full of explosives would create a tremendous amount of heat.

One stick of dynamite stuck up the ass would work much better as far as the spreading of the virus is concerned.

433 All I know is if the dualing projectile vomits and exploding diarrhea become mainstream I am going to stay in my castle. Not sure what the magic number will be. But with Ebola Amber I'd say we will be damn lucky if we don't read, in, oh, two weeks or so, of hundreds with symptoms.

Right now people are going to panic if they know someone from W. Africa much less visited there recently (why I have no idea as this has been going on since spring. Let's see: It's summer! Let's go get us some ebola and visit grandma!). On this line of thought, my little pumpernickel, why are these damn countries allowing people in to visit other than aide?

Meanwhile, you are an ED nurse, doc, EMT, or at reception. I can guarantee by this weekend there will be: influenza type symptoms that are real, possibly children with the Entero 68/69, drug seekers, hypochondriacs with ebola, and real potential ebola patients. This is not counting the gang-bangers or stabbings over a pork chop, or car accidents, or cutting off your hand with a saw. Oh, no, my sweets. It is going to be Dante's Hell on Wheels. We posted a list of anthrax symptoms but if Hypochondriac Helen came in she was still seen and treated or whatever.

The wisdom to ban the W. African ebola countries to the USA is not just to add 100 plus more flights of potentially contagious people to spread their special brand of love...but to not shut down our emergency departments and hospitals and isolation beds until this disease is ruled out: and right on top of the start of influenza.

Sheer incompetence and stupidity is this administration. If libs cannot see this through their rosy unicorn-farht haze, then it is hopeless. THanks for the links, Ace. success story. It had 20 cases and eight deaths after the virus was
brought by a Liberian-American who flew from Liberia to Lagos, Nigeria's
commercial capital of 21 million people, in July. Nearly 900 people
were potentially exposed to the virus by the traveler, who died, and the
disease could have wreaked havoc in Africa's most populous nation. Instead,
Ebola appears to have been beaten, in large part through aggressive
tracking of Ebola contacts, with no new cases since Aug. 31. WHO,
the U.N. health agency, called it "a piece of world-class
epidemiological detective work." The organization is set to declare an

So after 2 weeks, n^2 becomes 4, and 2^n is 4.

After 10 weeks, n^2 becomes 100, while 2^n becomes 1,024.

What you described was exponential. (5^n)

It has come to our attention that reference to the Ebola virus as originating in sub-Saharan Africa could be understood as a "code" intended to suggest or convey that viruses originating in such places are different from or even inferior to viruses originating in other places, viz. Northern Europe and so is suggestive of a racist purpose or effect.

Accordingly and henceforth, the Ebola virus shall be referred to as an "undocumented immigrant of pathogenic persuasion and non-specific origin."

512 What's the difference between "exponential" increase and "geometric" increase?

Nothing.

If the person using the phrase has no math background (see reporters, government officials) it just means some measured quantity so getting large fast and those words sound scary.

If the person talking actually knows what they're talking about, the terms are more or less interchangeable. Say I have two cases one week, 4 that got sick the next week while the first two died, 8 that those got sick the third week, while the 4 died, and so forth.

The 2, 4, 8, 16, etc that are sick is growing exponentially (put another way. in proportion to the number currently sick), but they aren't the same people, because in my example all the previous sick are dying. The number of dead 2+4+8+16+ ... is a geometrically increasing series.

You know what? I don't blame them. At least the school was taking responsibility for its students health and not just calling the CDC.

In the absence of competence from, or trust in, the federal government agencies responsible to managing this we're going to see more of it.

Call it an epidemic of an abundance of caution.

Call the paramedics from your home. Explain that your wife suddenly went into labor, and she's delivering *RIGHT NOW*! That actually happened with the twins in my family. My Dad delivered the first one, and the paramedics arrived in time to deliver the second.

Outside of special circumstances (C-Section, etc...) there's no reason why you absolutely must deliver at the hospital. The primary reason to do so is for better access to care. But if there's good reason to believe that's not the case (i.e. epidemic...), I don't think there's any reason why you *must* go.

623 And now, in little old Belton, Texas, we have 3 schools closed due to a family on the same flight as the nurse with the fever. One family member has been considered as "high risk" due to sitting 3 feet away from the nurse on the plane. The family has 2 children, one in middle-school and one in elementary school. Belton ISD has closed both of those schools, plus a day-care that transports students to and from the elementary school each day. The family has voluntarily quarantined itself, and the district is figuring out how to clean the schools and buses. BISD reports that the schools will be closed tomorrow (10-17) as well, and hopes that they will be able to open on Monday. Superintendent Kincannon emailed parents this morning about the closings, after being informed by the CDC (late Wednesday night) that it was "re-evaluating" the status of the family. She conveyed her frustration with the CDC in her email.

How? He still has to have a passport and travel visas. He has to go through customs and flight check ins. He could have stopped off at 12 different countries on his way here, and everyone of those countries would have been recorded.

His country of origin will still be apparent when he boards the flight and when he goes through customs.

Traveling by ship here, same....unless he is on some freighter, and jumps off when he gets here. Still, it would take days to get here and Mr.Ebola will be liquidfied by then.

I'm thinking that they Feds' know and have cast a blind eye to a black mark underground railroad of sorts where people are flying or boating to South America and then making their way into the US from there.

If the man had half a brain, he might realize that if someone is infected with Ebola, a trip like I just described is going to mean they are dead before they ever get here.

Instead, he keeps advocating for allowing Ebola carries to be brought here in the most direct manner possible.

In the midst of Katrina, Lib talking heads on TV were making snide comments like, "Republicans don't do hurricanes."

Well, I think its safe to say, "Democrats don't do viruses."

Think we'll see the MSM use a line like that???

Nahh...........

647 Would be tyrants tend to dispatch suspect troops as far from the capitol as possible before making moves to seize power.

Of course I could be overly paranoid.

It could be as simple as this President wants Guard troops to bring the disease back to their home towns.

You know, I will take would be tyrant over homicidal maniac.

648 I was led to believe Barack Obama is a better infectious disease manager than the CDC. Not to mention a better military strategist than the Pentagon. He's got this covered.

649 Maybe the CDC knows that their small team and 17-20 ebola beds aren't going to be enough. They were hoping the hospitals across the country would get the crash course, I guess.

That's probably going to be necessary since the administration is seeding the country with people from ebola zones.

650 If the hospitals can't handle it, then obviously the government will have to step in and run the hospitals.

Give this to your next denier.

Great explanation of "droplet" vs "airborne" and very well written horror story of facts.

Keep in mind that under ObamaCare, Health Care resources are being CUT, so reserves are less present when needed.

The man is an incompetent, evil, stupid, useless scumbag, worse even than Jimmy Carter.

Alex the Chick: your assumption would be wrong, as the Doctors from the CDC would have to be state licensed and approved to practice in that hospital before they could "take over."

Regs are great for emergencies.
