There is a whole chapter devoted to her, but Obama is only mentioned two or three times in the entire book. At the time it was written, she was the presumptive favorite for the Democrat nomination, while Obama was barely a blip on the radar. Posted by: rickl at October 11, 2014 06:39 PM (sdi6R) 55

Ernst is going to lose in Iowa.
New Iowa Poll (the gold standard poll there) now has Ernst leading by a single point 47-46, when she had a 6 pt lead in their last poll. Worst part is that among those who have already voted, Braley is destroying Ernst 56-38, and 15% of the respondents had already voted. Good novel. Totally ignored. The Birchers were pretty embarrassing in some ways but they were right about infiltration. The Soviets deeply infiltrated the universities and government and then arranged for them to cross-pollinate. Is anybody watching Gotham on FOX? I watched the first three episodes today. I'm not into the comic-book hero movies, but Gotham was interesting. I liked how all the villains are being introduced and getting their backstory. The show is pretty dark and grim, though, which I generally don't like, so I'm not sure if I'll stick with Gotham. John Birch was the son of American missionaries in China where John grew up. Hence he was very familiar with the language and culture. During WWII he became an intelligence officer for Gen. Claire Chennault's 14th AF. Strangely and ominously at the end of hostilities he vanished in an area of China then controlled by Mao's Communists. Then his body was found.
So it is claimed he was the first American killed by the Communists. Only if you ignore the American soldiers of the Polar Bear Division who died fighting the Red Bolsheviks around Murmansk in 1918-1919. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 11, 2014 08:01 PM (2/xEi) 154

Joined the American Legion yesterday for cheap lunches and to have a beer with normal people once in awhile. Didn't care for the VFW's policy that full members can only be from declared wars.
Oddly, that would disqualify the veterans of the first American Legion, as I don't believe that we ever officially declared war on the Northwest Confederacy back in the 1790s. St. Clair's Massacre and Fallen Timbers were honest-to-goodness battles, though. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 11, 2014 08:30 PM (nEG6g) Posted by: Soothsayer is MR. I am starting to believe the reason the USSS is falling apart like it is for two reasons.
1. This guy and family are always jetting off somewhere. And who gets stuck with the grunt work? The USSS. So they are getting worn down. 2. Colombian Hooker Gate is probably also a factor. Even the Emperors did not go out of their way to annoy their Praetorian Guards. Well except Caligula and Nero. 3. I can't imagine that Obama and co. inspire either loyalty or a good work ethic among those that have to deal with them on a daily basis. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 11, 2014 08:33 PM (nEG6g) 219

Hillary more than enabled Bill Clinton's personal war on women. For a time in the White House she was in charge of investigating and harassing the women who said they were abused by her husband. She knew the women were telling the truth. The same way she knew the truth when on the Today Show she blamed the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy for the rumors about Monica Lewinsky.
Christopher Hitchens, who was a hard leftist on everything except the Iraq war, concluded that Bill Clinton was guilty of raping Juanita Broaddrick. A chapter in Hitchens' book NO ONE LEFT TO LIE TO is titled IS THERE A RAPIST IN THE OVAL OFFICE? Hitchens concludes the chapter this way: "What are the chances that three socially and personally respectable women, all three of them political supporters of Mr. Clinton and none of them known to each other, would confect or invent almost identical experience which they did not desire to make public. And how possible would it be for a network of anti-Clinton rumor-mongers to create, let alone ventilate, such a coincidence? The odds that any of these ladies is lying seem to me to approach zero; their reasons for reticence are all perfectly intelligible." After covering up for her husband, harassing the women he abused, Hillary is just as guilty as he is. Posted by: hepcat at October 11, 2014 08:44 PM (yQRD6) 252

In grassroots political organizations the most extreme members tend to gravitate to the leadership positions. They control the image with what they put out, and they send an improper impression of what the organization is really all about. That gives the ammo to the other side. The 'nut' attack is the easiest, there's no policy to argue. That's why libs use the nut-racist-waronwomen-greed-etc. stuff. Posted by: Meremortal at October 11, 2014 08:54 PM (1Y+hH) 275

I just got so tired of being hit over the head with the anti-war, anti-violence message.
Which is weird given the years he spent working with UNIT. They let us know this season his father wanted him to be a soldier and didn't have a terribly high opinion of him, and it's pretty clear that the Doctor and Clara's anti military bigotry is foolish. Though I guess many of the show's viewers wouldn't catch that. But there was also the episode when the Sontarans were trying to terraform Earth where everything was falling apart right up to the point that UNIT ignored the Doctor and started engaging them with force. And the whole thing with the Time Lords. It's pretty clearly the civilian leadership following Rassilon that turned the universe against them. In The Time of the Doctor, the military were the reasonable ones he could coordinate with. Posted by: Methos at October 11, 2014 09:02 PM (A6vWB) 285

Posted by: Soothsayer is MR. MICROPHONE at October 11, 2014 08:43 PM I appreciate Pertwee a lot more now, than I did at the time. More so his run, than him as doctor, though. The poor bastard had the misfortune of being stuck between the 2 best doctors and arguably the 2 best runs. But, there's some of the best stuff they ever did in those years and classic stuff with The Master etc. Plus, Pertwee himself seemed kinda lame back then, but he did A-ok as the doctor. @280- That's fine teej. I have pretty thick skin. Not ashamed to be rednecktrailer trash. It's paid off, not too old, kitchen is huge, and it was what we could afford when we bought it. Oh, and the lakefront lot....

"Mary Cloggenstein from Brattleboro VT" -- one of my pet peeves, sock owner. Not that long ago, Dorcas Blimline from Brattleboro VT and Mary Cloggenstein were different socks. Both, of course, extolling the virtues of our wonderful President and bemoaning those who obstruct his path toward progress.

You obviously know the history better than me. I was laughing at the guy from the VFW that he must have like 6 members from a declared war. Hell, my dad is 90 and luckier than a lot of them to be around.
Gremlins ate my first reply. I was actually referring to a specific military unit from 1794, but I got the name wrong : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_of_the_United_States A "legion" in 18th century military-speak was a mixed formation of infantry and cavalry intended to operate independently. Both sides in the Revolutionary War used them, and our first professional army was organized as a legion. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 11, 2014 09:09 PM (0rz68) 299

Thanks for that link Grey Fox, more stuff I didn't know. It sounds like they were the early version of special forces. Posted by: dartist at October 11, 2014 09:18 PM (ahBY0) 304

Yes, dartist. The German versions were called freikorps and when I went 'net searching for some of Frederick the Great's ones, I got a bunch of German free pr0n sites because of the "free bodies"!

Yes, fish in the lake.No public access.Big bass and panfish. Catfish. A big carp is a great fight on light gear. Rumor is that some folks catchthe stocked trout out of the county lake down the road and release them here.

You know, Legion Posts I have been to in Texas are a lot like bars. Nothing against bars, been in more than I care to remember. But the American Legion should be more than a bar. I guess it's like being back in the EM club or something. By the way, been in the American Legion almost 40 years. Don't mean to be a ahole, maybe just this shrillary b.s. is getting me hacked off.

Tom Baker era was cool (pardon me for jumping in) but it did bring us K-9 and Adric.
I came in at Pertwee, but probably watched the Baker ones the most. I drift in and out of watching. Jury is still out on the new doctor. Like the accent. Starting to think he's more of a pussy than he should be... Posted by: Clutch Cargo at October 11, 2014 09:47 PM (sH832) 313
