Trey Gowdy, Jeff Sessions, Ben Carson, and Mike Lee

In last week's poll, we had 673 morons request coverage of Trey Gowdy, 536 request coverage of Ben Carson, and 370 request coverage of Jeff Sessions. Mike Lee was the top vote-getter from the write-ins, so let's cover him this week as well.

Before we begin, let's have a sense of where these four men rank in popularity as potential 2016 Presidential candidates:

In the interest of space, I'm going to try to keep these summaries short, but provide you with some links touting their potential candidacies and any red flags, as I know them. As usual, it would be great to hear from you in the comments section if you have additional insights about them, positive or negative.

REP. TREY GOWDY (SOUTH CAROLINA)

Trey Gowdy (b. August 22, 1964, in Greenville, SC) is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of South Carolina. Gowdy was first elected to represent South Carolina's 4th Congressional District in 2010. He is running for re-election in 2014. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Gowdy is an average Republican member of Congress, meaning he will vote with the Republican Party on the majority of bills.
Prior to his election to the U.S. House, Gowdy served as a clerk in the United States District Court and as a solicitor to the 7th circuit court.
Below is an abbreviated outline of Gowdy's academic, professional and political career:
1986: Graduated from Baylor University, Waco, Texas
1989: Graduated from University of South Carolina School of Law, Columbia
1994-2000: Clerk, United States District Court; Assistant U.S. Attorney
2001-2010: Solicitor, 7th Circuit

To be honest, as popular as Gowdy is in conservative circles, I had not realized he was being considered as a prospective candidate, but I guess some are hoping he runs. Here's an article singing his praises and, from earlier this year, here's a list of Badass Things Trey Gowdy has said.

Could Trey Gowdy be a serious contender?

DR. BEN CARSON (MARYLAND)

Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson Sr. (born September 18, 1951) is an American author and retired neurosurgeon. He is credited with being the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head. In 2008 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. After delivering a widely publicized speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, he became a popular conservative figure in political media for his views on social and political issues, spurring talk of his becoming a Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election.

When asked the likelihood of his presidential candidacy on September 23, 2014, neurosurgeon Ben Carson stated, "Unless the American people indicate in November that they like big government intervention in every part of their lives, I think the likelihood is strong." Carson won the Conservative Summit, Polk County Republicans and New Hampshire Young Republicans straw polls in 2014. An independent group was also formed, the National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee, to gather donations and expand his support base should he decide to run. Only three previous presidents had no prior political experience, but all three, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight Eisenhower, served as high-ranking military officials.

Dr. Carson received his B.S. from Yale University and his M.D. from the University of Michigan. He pursued his residency in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.

Carson has never held elected office or worked in government, so he does not have a record of votes. But he has spoken enough to permit us to come up with an educated guess as to his positions:

Dr. Carson launched a PAC this summer, so I guess he really is seriously considering running.

To be honest, I don't think I could support him at this time. He's simply too much of an unknown for my taste. And I wonder if people are satisfied with his explanation about his gun control positions.

SEN. JEFF SESSIONS (ALABAMA)

Jeff Sessions (b. December 24, 1946, in Selma, AL) is a Republican member of the U.S. Senate from the state of Alabama. Sessions was first elected to the Senate in 1996.
Sessions most recently won re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2008. He defeated Vivian Davis Figures (D) in the general election.
Prior to his election to the Senate, Sessions served as Alabama Attorney General from 1994 to 1996.
Sessions is seeking re-election unopposed in 2014.
Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Sessions is an average Republican member of Congress, meaning he will vote with the Republican Party on the majority of bills.

Earlier this year, Laura Ingraham wrote an editorial touting Jeff Sessions as a Presidential prospect. Senator Sessions' reply? "I know I’m not qualified to be president of the United States." I think a lot of us who are adamantly opposed to amnesty wish that Jeff Sessions would reconsider. It'd at least be nice to have someone who takes that issues seriously be a part of the primary process. That said, his age (he'll be 70 in 2016) might preclude a serious run.

SEN. MIKE LEE (UTAH)

Michael Shumway "Mike" Lee (b. June 4, 1971, in Mesa, AZ) is a Republican member of the U.S. Senate from Utah. Lee was first elected to the Senate in 2010. Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Lee served as counsel to Utah Governor John Huntsman.
Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Lee is one of the most reliable Republican votes, meaning he can be considered a safe vote for the Republican Party in Congress.
Lee earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and his J.D. from Brigham Young University School of Law. After earning his J.D., Lee was a law clerk to 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Justice Samuel Alito. He the became an assistant U.S. attorney and a law clerk to Alito again as Supreme Court Justice.
Below is an abbreviated outline of Lee's professional and political career:
2011-present: Member of the United States Senate
2005-2006: Counsel to Utah Governor John Huntsman

According to Ballotpedia, here's how Mike Lee voted on key bills in the 113th Congress. And here's his stand on key issues:

To be honest, I have not heard Mike Lee's name mentioned as a potential 2016 prospect and I seriously doubt that he will be running for POTUS any time soon. He is under a lot of pressure from the Utah GOP, many of whom seem to resent his presence in office after Senator Bennett was ousted by the Tea Party. From time to time there are criticisms leveled at Lee, most notably during the Shut Down.

In my opinion, it's in response to that pressure that Lee decided to put forward some proposals on taxes and education. To me, they are pretty blatantly pandering to Utah voters who tend to have large families, especially given that one of the proposals actually seems to involve expanding the Federal government's role in funding higher education (by extending it to the highly controversial for-profit universities). Lee's proposals, which were unveiled earlier this year, did not receive much attention.

He recently joined with Marco Rubio in proposing changes to the tax code. You can read about it here. Personally, I think Lee is concerned about getting re-elected and has hitched his wagon to someone he perceives as being a young politician who is acceptable to the GOPe. He's my senator, so I'm a little disappointed to see this, but I really do think he's doing it for political survival. Utah is a one-party state and that often makes for dirty primary politics. He'll be up for re-election in 2016, but the knives are getting sharpened already. (Here's one example of an absolutely odious Op-Ed written by Dan Liljenquist, who had run against hosta in 2012 but who since has sold his soul out of political opportunism. Liljenquist compares Mike Lee to the man who lit himself on fire at the National Mall last year.)

3 My take: Sessions is probably too old, Mike Lee is not going to run, Carson is too much of an unknown (and not at all ready)... Gowdy is intriguing, but I doubt he'll run.

6 I don't think Carson favors the "absolute right to gun ownership". He's moderated his position somewhat, but my sense is that he's doing it for political purposes.

I think he has a Northeastern position on guns, which is to say that he is actually ok with some gun control (although maybe not at the Federal level). I think when he said that thing about regulations being dependent on where you live, that was his real feeling. He learned that the base wouldn't go for that, so he's changed his views.

That's why he's not ready and also why it'd be risky to vote for him for POTUS imho. He's brilliant and well-intentioned, but not seasoned.

I agree.

There seems to be just a little bit of "The Perfect Candidate. Clean, articulate,and proof that Republicans aren't racists" going on in the conservative side of the nation.
He really is a success story,and no-one can take that from him.
But I can't help but ask myself "If he were white, would we even be looking at him?" because of his political inexperience.
I thought that a better fit would have been having him in charge of the VA for a few years.
Then...maybe.

I have friends at Hopkins who operate at the same level of management that he did.

While the VA would have been larger, the complexity and managerial skills needed would have been the same.

I genuinely feel that the VA assignment would have been an excellent fit for him, and we as a nation lost an opportunity to provide for our Vets.

I take the fact that Choom Boy was a firggin' unknown before he was deified by the Democrats as a hopeful sign that someone -- perhaps channeling Goldwater and/or Reagan, if we're lucky -- can rise from the much and start us on the path to cleaning up the post-'08 disaster.

Sessions is a staunch conservative legislator. We need him where he is.

I think that considering the number of criminals in this administration , we may need a prosecutor for the next 8 years and Gowdy fits the bill.

i like that he says after researching it more his position has changed but i hate the fact that his initial reaction was "depending on where you live"

Being a RINOy RINO who was raised in the Communist State of Maryland, I don't find his gun control positions disqualifying.

But I need a longer public record before I'd vote for him (in the primary, anyway).

He seems like a very moral person, which counts for a lot in my book, so I would probably be able to vote for him against whatever Devil the Dems ran, but that's it.

24 I had no problem finding 6 candidates to support out of that big list: Perry, Haley, Cruz, Jindal, Walker, and Martinez.

I am starting to think Cruz won't make a serious run b/c the long knives are out and I doubt Martinez will. But I really hope Haley runs because I like what I've seen so far. Perry is still my top guy, unit-stepping notwithstanding.

27 Choosing just five issues was difficult. And there are some that I would modify a bit... like the environment one. I'm all for responsible conservation and preventing pollution, but it has to be done sensibly, weighted with true cost/benefit.

And who wouldn't want to prevent hunger? Giving people a hand when they are truly in extremis is one thing, not this gross, intergenerational dependent class we have now.

32 Dr. Ben Carson.

Wonderful and gifted surgeon. Brilliant man, really. Could be an asset to the next President, hopefully a Republican. A rock of integrity and decency as a man.

He could certainly fix the VA, and could probably run HHS pretty well too. He's led a large surgical team at Johns Hopkins for years. Knows how to get things done.

Not a seasoned politician, and not a good choice as a Presidential candidate. We need someone terribly shrewd, terrible determined to fix the mess we're in. I'm afraid that Dr. Carson would spend too long trying to reason out each situation, rather than knowing his own mind on policy.

33 One small nit to pick: I dislike the "Solve the illegal immigration problem" formulation. We've heard far to much of this sort of obfuscation. A Dem will solve it by amnesty, i.e. eliminating the border and deeming everyone with an Hispanic surname to be a citizen. That is a completely different proposition than my solution of walling the border and expelling illegals.

For this issue, it is necessary for the wording to be precise.

Yeah, well I'm being honest. I'm a RINO on guns. I realize it is a Bad Thought, and also that the current regime really wants to grab guns, but I am ok with having some restrictions on personal weapons or their usage.

Case in point, here in Utah each summer we have wildfires set off by morons shooting off rounds in dry brush. The state tried to put in some regulation - or give some agency the power to regulate when/where those could be shot off - and there was tremendous vocal push-back from 2nd Amendment absolutists.

Even Boner wants to "solve" the immigration isswue, and if that's what we let him do, we'll get some form of amnesty. Ditto a metric fuckton of "Republicans" in Congress. Others would solve it by not giving amnesty, but tossing a nod and a wink to all the illegals who are streaming in.

Having grown up in the shadow of the space program and worked at MSFC, I care a lot about it too.

IIRC, there was a dust-up several decades ago about standard flights to deliver payloads into orbit: some company wanted a new engine and someone else wanted what they called a "big, dumb" engine that favored reliability above everything else. I'd like to see that approach, since I believe the costs would be reduced and the safety factor would be better.

We could use it immediately to regain our own access to our own space station.

President Boy would make NASA the world's premier flight lab, attracting the very best and brightest young engineers who would then have the freedom to start their own companies. This would also have military and security implications as well, because China is becoming increasingly arrogant about controlling low Earth orbit.

As I'm sure you're aware, NASA was formed from a prior agency called NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.

NACA was created in 1915, when it was noticed that while the airplane was invented in the United States, only a scant decade later the Europeans had taken the lead in aviation technology.

NACA was a small, unobtrusive federal agency. As its name indicated, its mission was to do research and development, and make their data available to the private aviation industry to help them develop better airplanes. NACA did not build its own airplanes or operate its own airline.

There are some people who believe that NASA should return to its roots, and concentrate on cutting edge R&D to help private industry develop better rockets and spacecraft.

This is already happening, in a way. SpaceX designs and builds their own rockets, engines, and spacecraft, but they freely admit that they rely on data and lessons learned from NASA's prior experience. Sierra Nevada Corporation's Dream Chaser shuttle is heavily based on a NASA lifting body test vehicle from the 1960s.

I didn't say so, but of course I favor the military operating their own space program to suit their needs. They don't necessarily need to design and build their own vehicles, for the most part. They could buy off-the-shelf rockets and spacecraft built by private industry, except in certain situations where what they need is not available.

The state of Alabama was rightly proud to have a role in the burgeoning space program. It was a great uniting factor and an exciting time to be a kid.

I still want to be an astronaut. At my advanced age, I'd almost consider a one-way trip to Mars. I'd want to have communications, naturally, because it would be a great story. A live video feed would be way kewl, and if technology were able, a live virtual reality feed. Imagine a rover with stereo cameras running around with a fully immersive view of the surroundings.

Some enterprising group of individuals could make some money doing something like that.

The LADEE moon orbiter carried an experimental laser communications device. It was successful, and future versions will be capable of transmitting vastly more data than conventional radio transmitters. Imagine a JupiterCam showing live HD video of Jupiter from an orbiting spacecraft that you can watch in real time on your computer.

LADEE was launched from Wallops Island, and I was able to watch the ascent from my front yard. That was pretty damn thrilling. We don't get to see many space launches with our own eyes here in Pennsylvania.

With regard to the candidates, it's important to remember that we're electing a chief executive, so it's necessary that a candidate have executive experience. So while I'd practically any Republican over practically any Democrat, I'd also take any Republican governor, even a moderate like Martinez, over any senator, even one who talks as good a game as Cruz does.

As for Carson, I admire the man tremendously, but if he's serious about being president, let him get some executive QT as a mayor or governor, then I'll consider him.

As for issues, there's only two:

1. At home, restoring limited, constitutional government.

2. Abroad, restoring the power and prestige of the United States.

Underpinning both: fighting the totalitarian ambitions of the Left.

People may differ on this or that specific issue (such as how best to dismantle Obamacare), but I hope we agree on these principles.

You don't have to look far to see what Bolton thinks of the "New World Order". In fact, the main reason Bush had so much trouble getting him confirmed for the UN ambassador is because he would constantly say that the UN is useless and that it should be abolished and reconstituted with exactly one member on the Security Council, the United States. If anything, Bolton is way to far to the right for even many Republicans, some of whom also fought Bolton's appointment.

Almost every single diplomat who has worked for the US in recent years has been a member of the CFR at one time or another. Its more a right of passage than anything else. Bolton is not a member of the CFR now. But you know who is? Caspar Weinberger, Ronald Reagan's Sec of Defense for 7 years when a certain wall came tumbling down.

Practically speaking, it's hard to name them early on since it's unclear who would accept the offer, what their prior commitments will be by that time, etc... The question would probably be better framed as "what prior Secs of State would reflect your views" or "whose thinking on foreign policy reflects your views" then the candidate could say Bolton, or whoever else.

I understand there's some value in "going vague" as Ace has argued here before. Specific policies make you more vulnerable to attack, but who you pick for important cabinet spots or who reflects your views still leaves you some wiggle room but lets me know your priorities and general thinking..

This is related to Carson's problem on gun control as well. Candidates who genuinely don't have positions on any of the issues in that poll aren't ready, IMO, by definition. I'd wager that almost every commenter here has a fairly well thought-out position on each of those issues and none of us are running for President. Having a well-defined position that you can support at some length is a minimum entry qualification for a candidate.Rather than being vague on an issue, I'd rather see candidates express their preferences by priority.
