We Fought the Poverty and the Poverty Won

Despite the trillion$ and trillion$ spent over the last 47 years the poverty rate has remained essentially unchanged since 1967.

Of course this is primarily because the poverty rate itself is a BS measure which only counts income before any benefits and is adjusted periodically so that approximately 14% of Americans will always be below the poverty line. Note that the poor of 2014 are much better off than the poor of 1967 and even better off than many of the 2014 middle class in Europe.

Census counts a family as poor if its income falls below specified thresholds. But in counting family "income," Census ignores nearly the entire $943 billion welfare state.

For most Americans, the word "poverty" means significant material deprivation, an inability to provide a family with adequate nutritious food, reasonable shelter and clothing. But only a small portion of the more than 40 million people labelled as poor by Census fit that description.

The media frequently associate the idea of poverty with being homeless. But less than two percent of the poor are homeless. Only one in ten live in mobile homes. The typical house or apartment of the poor is in good repair and uncrowded; it is actually larger than the average dwelling of non-poor French, Germans or English.

The ISIS Style of Socialism

Ten Facts from the ?#?Islamic_State? that everyone should know.

1. We don't pay rent here. Houses are given for free.
2. We pay neither electric nor water bills.
3. We are given monthly grocery supplies. Spagetti, pasta, can foods, rice, eggs and etc.
4. Monthly allowance are given not only to husband and wife (wives) but also for each child.
5. Medical check up and medication are free - The Islamic State pays on behalf of you.
6. You can still survive even if you don't speak Arabic. You can find almost every race and nationality here.
7. For every newly married couples are given 700usd as a gift. (Only for Mujahid and I'm not sure if it's still available now).
***
9. No one is conducting business during prayer time. You can see people left their shops opened and pray either in the masjid or near by their shops.
10. The number of mix-marriages and mixed-race children are so high. It's beautiful to witness brotherhood with no racism.

From a muhajir sister, also spouse of a Mujahid brother at #Islamic_State
Diary Of A Muhajirah

And Bookworm points out that unlike other flavors of socialism Caliphate socialism is very up front with the fact that it's based on OPM (other people's money):

In the caliphate, as I said, things are different, very, very different. The consumers are one perpetual class, always enjoying luxury, while the producers are another perpetual class, always suffering servitude.  A case in point is the fact that, as you probably noticed, I left out Item No. 8 in the above list. That's the one that talked about paying for this socialist Islamic paradise:

8. You don't have to pay tax (If you're a Muslim).

Coerced payment from the non-Muslims is always at the point of a gun or the tip of a sword.

135 "The media frequently associate the idea of poverty with being homeless. But less than two percent of the poor are homeless."

And, of "the homeless", the media constantly push the trope that the only problem these people have is the lack of a place to live.

Nope. Sorry. If you give these people a place to live -- and actually require them to behave themselves while in it, perform basic maintenance and upkeep upon it, pay some trifle towards it -- most of them will promptly ruin and abandon it.

The problems of "the homeless" are, overwhelmingly,

(a) Mental illness, and
(b) Substance abuse, counting booze as a substance.

Those two categories (totals do not sum to 100 thanks to overlap) take in the vast majority of "homeless" individuals.

Shitfire, I am a San Franciscan of long standing and see this stuff All. The. Time. Good old open-minded San Francisco, so open minded that its brains run out its ears, is an absolutely huge hive of the "homeless".

Meanwhile, liberalism says that:

(a) You can't institutionalize or treat even obviously severely mentally ill individuals without their consent, consent they can't really give and that you will never get from them, and
(b) If it feels good, do it, and boy, do booze and dope ever feel good, so good that some will subordinate everything else to them.

So until those twin precepts of liberalism go away, which they won't ever do, the "homeless" won't go away either.

Oh, and of course there's the second-order problem that drug use fuels psychoses. Even weed does it for some.

This is what the Islamic State is doing wrong. The jihad state only lasts as long as there aren't more kuffar to conquer. Eventually it runs out. You have to look to the future. You have to have a producing class and you can't squeeze it too hard. (I had to learn all this the hard way.)

So we're trusting that sunni states, all authoritarian and some fundamentalist, will fight the caliph - who is post-sunni - knowing that if the sunni states "win", the power vacuum is most likely to be filled by the two Iranian-run Shia states on either side.

Yeah. I see all that ending well.

Well he was still going as of about an hour ago. I'm about 90% sure he's using a script that posts his inanity every few seconds if it's not already present and changes to a different proxy every 30 minutes or so.

The problem with MUMR is that he doesn't really interact with people here and he doesn't put a real email address in his comments so our only recourse to deal with him is to banhammer the hell out of him.

tried to push the meme that everyone who was on the waiting list for
free/subsidized public housing in Toronto must have been homeless!!11!!1!! Everyone knew that was b.s. so they soon stopped pushing it."

Here in SF, in the late 1980s, there was an absolutely constant drumbeat in the local press.

Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush. Homeless. Reagan-Bush.

Unceasing.

There would be periodic fawning "success story" articles about people who had been given places to live courtesy of Liberal Government Munificence.

One of those was about a newly constructed complex of heavily subsidized low-income apartments on the SF bay waterfront, and man, that is about the most expensive place in Commiefornia short of Malibu to build anything.

They had profiles of the people living there at public expense, and one of them was a "former Chernobyl firefighter". I said, holy moly, whoa nelly, wait a damn minute, WHAT IS THIS GUY DOING HERE?

The Cold War was still going on, for goodness' sake.

And anyone who had held any kind of an official state job anywhere behind the Iron Curtain _certainly_ wasn't a U.S. citizen while doing so.

So how does he get to, number one, quickly get into the USA to begin with, and then number two, casually jump to the head of the queue, ahead of native-born citizens, for a cushy subsidized apartment with gorgeous Bay views?

Still don't have any answers to those questions.

Bending an elbow here in honor of Jack and of all the other multitude of cool cat companions who are no more.

It's been a while since I've had to handle a cat passing away, but I know what the toughest part is. Walking around and realizing the sudden emptiness of all of their old favorite spots to hang out. That one corner of the bed. The sunny late afternoon windowsill. The shady spot under the backyard tree.

And I swear, although I am the least supernaturalist person you will ever meet, that I have heard faint meows in the voices of my departed cats for a few weeks after each one of them had passed on. Echoes.

Yeah the Star Wars one is a pretty weak "plot hole." You had Kenobi there on the planet as a guardian for him. As opposed to Leia who did have her adoptive father's name and no knowledge of who her real father is.

The much bigger plot hole is in Return of the Jedi Luke asks Leia if she remembers her real mother and she does. Even though her only connection is the hours immediately after childbirth before Padme dies. The chance of having a memory at the moment of birth is impossible.

At one point, after I had been nodding and scribbling for a couple of minutes straight as the physician talked, I looked up and said, "Anything else, Doc?"

He said, "Yeah. Gimme that pad. I want to see what you've been writing down and check to make sure you've spelled everything correctly."

It absolutely infuriates me to see them being used for bullshit unnecessary missions. To include air show flying displays.

Most of the general public don't know the difference from one jet to another. Just as they don't know and don't care what airliners they fly on. Pick something out of the boneyard for the air show stunts.

Posted by: rickl at September 23, 2014 12:51 AM (sdi6R)

376 Well, the Air Force probably campaigned hard to use the F-22. This is technically their first combat mission. The fact the F-22s weren't used in Iraq and Afghanistan was part of the reason Obama killed it, arguing there was no role for the F-22 in the post-Cold War environment.

It was smart not use the F-22 in Iraq or A-stan when it wasn't needed. But that smart military decision undercut the political base of support for the program, allowing Obama to kill it.

By comparison, the Marines threw the V-22 into the fire immediately, arguably for missions it was not needed.

Military procurement is political. The Marines wanted to make sure nobody would kill the program, so they used it as soon as they could and as often as possible.

And today the V-22 is still being produced and the F-22 is not. If the Air Force had used the F-22 to pointless drop a few bombs on Iraq, maybe Obama wouldn't have been able to kill it off.

Posted by: Costanza Defense at September 23, 2014 12:54 AM (ZPrif)

377 I think the Air Force is still hoping a Republican president in 2016 might restart the F-22 production lines. So now they have gotten rid of the "If it's so important, how come we've never used it?" complaint.

You ain't kiddin'! I remember driving by the end of an airport runway once when one of those was taking off. It's very dramatic, in a low-tech sort of way. Lots of fire and smoke and noise.

The F-18s that would take off in the same place had a more "even", or "controlled" sound to them, not as loud, and the engines seemed to just have kind of this glow coming out of them. I was working at the place where they were (and were being) built. I was in the missile business (working on navigation for the Tomahawk, among other things), but I still would hear them describe the F-4 as "Proof that if a brick would fly, if given enough power!"

I just finished watching on Hulu this Canadian historical 'reality' tv show called Pioneer Quest. I think it was filmed in '99 or so. Two couples are sent out into the countryside with a wagon load of 1880's gear and have to stay for 10 months or so.

I think PBS here in the states did something similar but the participating couples in the US show were idiots and had no experience in living in the rough. The Canadian producers were smart enough to pick couples that knew at least a few things. A very sedate and enjoyable change from the usual SuperDrama~! reality shows in the US.

This is a FOUR STAR movie and I highly recommend seeing it if you get a chance.

For whatever erason it never came down to the local first run theater and instead came into the second run theater, which is fine. $1.75 for a ticket? I'll take it!

Anyway, the plot if very simple. Jon Favreau plays a divorced father and the head chef at some fancy ass restaurant. Always too busy to spend time with his kid, fits him into his life when he gets a chance. Anyway, after receiving a brutal review from a food critic Favreau discovers Twitter (Twitter might as well be the costar of this movie) and calls out the food critic and challenging him to come back to his restaurant so he can blow his mind and kick his ass.

Anyway, the problem being the restaurant owner is some unimaginative chump who thinks, hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it and refuses to change the menu even once. Nevermind the review basically ruined his business, though he doesn't know it yet, he refuses to change. So Favreau wins up on his ass.

So what happens is he ends up traveling with his ex-wife, played by the wonderfully delicious Sofia Vergera, to Miami and winds up buying a food truck from his ex-wife's first husband.

So after fixing up the truck Favreau, his son, and John Leguizamo end up driving up through Florida into Louisiana into Texas selling Cubano sandwhiches.

It's a simple story. It's essentially the story of a father, alienated from his son, learning how to reconnect and about a man learning to reconnect with the passion that drives him in life.

It's a very sweet, endearing feel good kind of movie filled with delicious looking food and excellent music. I really left this movie just feeling...good. And hungry. I really wanted one of those sammiches. And...everything else that was cooked on screen. I was practically licking my palms when they pulled out a brisket and...oh, just see it youself.

Four/five stars and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

415 @412 wouldn't it make some sense to use the F-22's so we can get a sense of their operational strengths and weaknesses under combat conditions? This seems like a good one to do a semi-permissive run on, before using them for the first time when the environment isn't quite so permissive.

Reminds me of the F-117s being first used in Panama, ostensibly to drop two precision bombs next to PDF barracks -- not on them, so they got the PDF's attention without causing too many casualties to guys we were going to have to turn right around and rearm. Everybody knew the real reason was that the Air Force had new toys they had to use.

420 @415 It is a new toy (you have to use those to get newer toys), but I doubt that is the only reason they were sourced for these particular missions.

I'm not cheering the fact that they were used. I'm not cheering anything about this admin and where we're headed.

Well, just a thought, but - next time you come the the east coast, pack a pair. At least be like Jake from State Farm & wear some khakis instead of shorts, dude - it was like 30 degrees!

You might like the movie "Eat Drink Man Woman".

It is in Chinese with subtitles but a lot goes on without dialog. And they are always cooking absolutely spectacular meals.
