Hey Remember When I Said We Shouldn't Take Pleasure In Someone Else's Humiliation? Yeah Forget That, I Was High

I got this from Ed Morrissey's post on #GamerGate, and his interview about it with Adam Baldwin. Check out his post if you're interested. Adam Baldwin does a pretty good job of explaining it on Morissey's podcast.

(And it's a hard thing to explain, because it gets into potentially objectionable stuff, like someone's revealed sexual affairs -- but Baldwin does a good job of keeping it out of those weeds, and on the subject of media accountability and integrity. If you're interested, Crank T-Rex has more on the whole scandal.)

If you don't have time for that, enjoy this dude DESTROY (and I do mean destroy) dopey feminist critics who, let's face it, have given up any kind of legitimate critique and now are just looking for things to be OUTRAGED!!! about on a daily basis.

I don't know who this dude is but he brings the thunder.*

Well, I mean, he brings the thunder to the extent it can be brought in a stupid internet nontroversy about an "overly sexualized" drawing of Spider-Woman.

Within that limited sphere, he brings the thunder. Favorite quote: "By constantly bitching about this horseshit..."

Here's a video metaphor of the regularly scheduled feminist outrage:

* Oh, I do know who it is: It's Maddox, who did this piece telling people who claim to "love science" that they don't love science and need to shut the f*** up.

He's great but someone needs to tell him the word is "provocative" not "evocative."

I mean, "evocative" is a word; it's just not the one he intends.

Which is also normal for most superheroes.

But yeah, my first thought when seeing the pose was, "Isn't that just how Spiderman ordinarily poses?" The only difference is the angle. And if they'd gone with the usual angle, we'd be hearing all about how they were emphasizing her breasts instead of her butt.

77 Drawing talent is one of the few things I actually tried to develop and made almost no progress on.

I taught myself how to play guitar and piano as an adult. I didn't get great, but it was passable.

I tried to teach myself to draw and made almost no visible progress.

Some of it just in-born. Maybe most. I expect kids learning pre-puberty can make some decent progress.

As an adult I just made no headway.

Buddy of mine is a natural. From a young boy he could just draw nearly anything he saw. He didn't go into art cause he said other guys were so much better than him. He still draws for fun.

Almost everything else I've ever done the auto-didact bit for, I made some decent improvements. Not drawing, though. That part of my brain doesn't seem to exist.

I think you really just need to be able to accept something that everyone has trouble with: You are going to be as like an infant at first, doing absolute shit work, and you need to accept that, and be ready for it, and do it anyway, over and over again, until you draw like a child, and then keep at that until you draw like a teenager.

Probably the same thing with music.

Girl, this time of year is my favorite. No longer does the sun set at 9PM and rise at 5 AM.

I'm out of town on business right now and will entirely miss my winter, but...

I was thinking of you earlier. A month or so ago you said something about Forged website so I went to it & bought 3 T Shirts there.

It was hot here & I have to wear neck collar in rose garden. I had black T Shirt on, my friend told me white is best when it's hot out. I took that one off & put on a white T Shirt I bought from there. It's very well made & high quality.

90 "Did you even watch the video? He shows multiple instances where male characters are shown 'nude' as Spiderwoman. Including a pose that would've caused shitfits if it had been a woman, but got shrugs because it was a man."

I'm sure it would with feminists, I'm just pointing out why people are reacting poorly to this particular image. And since those images were not widely publicized and pushed hard by Marvel trying to increase sales... only comic book geeks ever saw them.

Hence, no outrage or concern.

In any case, the artist in this particular case is a softcore erotica artist, who specializes in drawing nymphets in sexual situations and positions. Its like asking Bob Guccione to do a picture of a nun. What do you think you're going to get?

This response of huffing "why, its nothing, this is just another picture you people are outrageous!!!" is just silly posing. Its clear what the issue is, its why guys look at the pic and go "sweet"

No, there is such a thing as natural talent. Some people are just naturally better at some things than others.

And the human brain is fundamentally different after puberty than before, mastering new skills post-puberty is more difficult. Language is a perfect example of that, but most elite athletes, singers, artists, etc learn their skills as young children.

130 >>>I've heard DuoLingo is good. Both are free. DuoLingo is the new language learning hotness apparently.

a commenter here recommended it and I tried it.

It's decent for what it is. They make some good choices. They try to turn the learning process into a game (with leveling up, buying extra lives, extra health (for when you make mistakes on quizzes), and they try to get you reading real foreign language materials ASAP.

What they make you do is TRANSLATE WIKIPEDIA PAGES IN OTHER LANGUAGES, which is pretty smart, as you're actually helping expand wikipedia as you learn.

And they start you doing that fast.

By the way, if you ever read a really shitty translation of a Wikipedia page imported from the foreign wikipedias, this is why.

My bad.

On the other hand, DuoLingo is not deep, does not have grammatical instruction, does not have some key stuff (like being able to talk to other students learning, though I imagine you could arrange this on your own easily enough).

It's great for a free product, but it has the limitations of a free product.

it also annoys me when it kills me in a quiz because I wrote a correct sentence, but not the exact sentence they wanted (that is, it is only programmed to accept one answer, though one could write several possible correct sentences answering a question).

One of the DC artists, Bart Sears I think, wrote a series of drawing lessons in the back of one of the comics.

He's known for super-exaggerated musculature. He called his style 'bag of potatoes;' the potatoes being the musculature underneath clothing, the 'bag.'

Of course you still have to get proportions right, but his explanations made sense ... if you practiced like a mofo of course.

i've heard that, or i've been told, "Stop drawing like you've been trying to draw since you were a child; that's plainly not working, now STOP, and obey the proper technique."

Adam Carolla has a whole riff that everything in live consists of breaking your natural technique and accepting that there is a non-natural but much better technique -- whatever you're doing, you have to stop what "feels right," because plainly, that's not the right way to do it.

Batting a baseball, for example. It's a specific technique, not the "natural" way you might think to do it.

anyway he expanded this idea to all of life, and how one of our biggest impediments is our refusal to abandon our "natural technique" and listen to someone who knows what the hell he's talking about and try HIS technique.

Yeah. I took art classes in high school and ended up being tremendously frustrated because no matter how much I practiced I couldn't make whatever I was trying to draw look remotely like the picture I had in my mind.

People who have a natural talent for something tend to apply themselves to developing that talent and they get even better at it. They sometimes make a mistake in thinking that it's something everyone can do if they work at it. But if you are tone-deaf, you can't sing - period. If you have poor hand-eye coordination, you are not going to hit like DiMaggio.

It's not about feminism. I've been on and off a feminist myself since, oh, birth. (Mum was one of the strong ones.)

It's about the whole fucking Western world turning into LGF.

It's about how someone has the right to voice an opinion . . . until someone else, with no real opinions of his/her own but with lots of ambition, decides they can use that opinion to get an "upding".

Feminism is nothing to these guys. If a strong woman shows up arguing for the Right like - oh - that Alaskan chick, O GODS AND GODDESSES WATCH OUT.

152 There's some good UFC fights tonight. Couple heavyweights that should be fun. And in a smaller than usual cage. The heavyweights tend to have crap cardio, so the less running they do the better.

UFC's actually a good example of pre vs post-puberty training.

They are just starting to get the first generation of UFC guys who've been training MMA their whole live. Like from the age of 5.

The first 10+ years it was guys who trained in some other discipline -- wrestling, boxing, jiu-jitsu, bjj, kick-boxing, karate, etc, etc -- who then tried to add the other skills to their arsenal as an adult.

Now you got 20 year olds who've been training all this since they were in kindergarten. As a result, the new guys are a lot better than the last generation of fighters who tended to be one-dimensional.

154 an example of that is that people will mispronounce words in foreign languages when there is a near-cognate in their own language, but when the word is completely different than anything in their own language, they actually pronounce the entirely-alien word more accurately.

Everyone just defaults to their learned way of doing things, and pretty much everyone has to break that pattern at some point.

155 One of the people who draws the Cyanide and Happiness / Zen Pencils types of strips had a long-ish piece on becoming an artist.

Apparently, developing fine motor control is part of the process. He made a point of saying "Everybody thinks they can just pick up a pencil and BOOM! - you have to work at it." He then showed exercises like making small loops in cursive style and getting the same size across the page, et cetera.

Which - for some reason - makes me want to kill Bob Ross.

Now, that's not to say that the liberal hippie lesbians have their shit together, because they don't. They're commies, and liberals. That's why we hate them. Not because they're gay. They're gay because they were raped and/or abused by men. It's pretty much that simple.

I can't write 3 sentences that make sense but I can get a pretty fair likeness in charcoal. I don't mean to say that you're lazy if you can't do one thing or another. 169 It's both:

1) People are born with different levels of natural talent. Literally genetically superior -- faster, stronger, smarter, ability mimic, hand-eye coordination, visual imagination, direction sense, etc, etc, etc.

2) Working hard, people can improve most skills. Often a good bit. Your rate of improvement and peak are probably a function of your natural talent.

It's not an either or. Some of us are born stronger and faster than others. If you exercise and practice you'll get even stronger and faster. And the weak and slow can also improve with exercise and practice and technique.

Steroids, HGH, TRT, and EPO also work.

180 Adam Carolla has a whole riff that everything in live consists of breaking your natural technique and accepting that there is a non-natural but much better technique -- whatever you're doing, you have to stop what "feels right," because plainly, that's not the right way to do it.

I'd add in that most "experts" at something are 90% of the time doing the basics really well. I see this a lot with dancing. Couples will memorize complex figures without really understanding them. The result is that they can muddle through together, but put them with separate partners and they fall apart. The instructors or professional tango dancers, on the other hand, can improvise and make it look complex, but when you look closely it's just a sequence of basic figures done very precisely and very quickly and in time to the music.

185 Right, interest is key, but people tend to be interested in things they have some natural talent for because they get positive rewards.

I was a good athlete. I remember being 5 or 6 and I was just ... better ... at almost every sport than the other kids. I was faster and more coordinated. I had no training. Neither did the other kids.

I remember kids being selected for choir in like 2nd grade. Nobody had any training, but some kids could sing on pitch. I could not.

I remember theater stuff as a kid. Some kids were naturally funnier, had more natural charisma, could mimic voices and walks and stuff.

It's not a binary talent or not. It's a gradation. And people with high levels of talent tend to migrate to activities where their talent is rewarded.

That said, one of childhood friends was a tiny Japanese dude who loved playing basketball even though he was short, slow, couldn't jump and was a terrible shooter.

i want to learn german now too.

It's going okay. You just have to be prepared for frustration, but also know that by keeping at it, it will come.

There is something called Coffee Break German available which gives you 15-20 minute lessons. it's an easy way to start, in preparation for the other stuff.

Incidentally, my theory -- and we will see if this is vindicated; I don't know if it will be yet -- is that you should try to read (and hear) the actual language as much as possible, as early as feasible (which is not immediately), so you should have an eye towards reading the German newspapers and stuff within a month or so of starting the language.

Like, it's my theory that this is how I learned English (by actually reading and hearing English), and ergo, this should, in theory, be a good way to learn a foreign language.

The theory sure seems sound to me but I don't know if it actually works any better than sticking just to texts and such.

Yes, you are probably right about that. Really the German pronunciation is not too horrible, orange juice and subtle umlaut modifications aside; it's the complexity. I once owned a book listing the conjugations of the 500 common German verbs that do not conjugate in the usual way.

...

german has all that endless declension shit and three different genders for nouns, and that's annoying (French is actually SIMPLER in terms of gender and declensions), and yeah, that's not simple like English is, but it is close to English in other ways.

when you get past basic stuff like vowel pronunciations and consonant clusters that exist in English but are uncommon, it does seem to me to sound more like English than French does.

225 The only hard part about German is the thing where they put all the important verbs at the end of the sentence. Other than that, it's pretty fun.

The other fun one is Latin. There's a book called Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, which is entirely in Latin. Learning that way is extremely easy. It's just a matter of spending time on it consistently.

Which is hard to do when you have a job and a family that makes the job necessary.

I read and watch a lot of WWII books and videos. Often times, like in the "World at War" series, they will be interviewing a German who doesn't speak English, translating what they are saying with subtitles. I've always had the sense that what is being printed in the subtitles doesn't translate into English quite what they were saying. I hate to use the word "nuance" (only because it has been so overworked by the Obama fellators) but that's what is missing. If I could understand what they are saying I might have a better understanding of what they are truly trying to say.

Anyway, he had some lady from the Washington Post on. She was complaining that O'Reilly had used the term "that woman" in referring to Heifer Harf. Using the the term "that woman" was supposedly condescending and sexist.

Of course if O'Reilly had wanted to be accurate, he could have used the term "that asshole" in referring to any of the three of them. But he got pummeled for using the term "that woman".

lefigaro.fr is my main one, but I have my twitter feed filled with French feeds from dozens of papers, le monde, les echoes, le nouveau observateur, huffpo francais, slate francais (really), etc. Shit I have french psychology feeds in there.

My theory for this is that frequent contact breeds familiarity, so if I just get used to seeing and reading french in my twitter feed, I will jsut sort of naturally (without feeling like I'm "studying") get familiar with it.

As I said, I think it's a good theory, but I can't swear that it's definitely better than a more textbook-based system.

Obviously you will also have to have certain websites bookmarked: Wordreference.com (great, great dictionary for 20 different languages), and wiktionary.fr (french definitions and etymologies in french; sometimes more useful than WordReference), and sometimes I like to read stuff in wikipedia.fr (french wikipedia).

Sometimes it becomes more complex.

You know how "hillbilly" speak has some verbs give the pre-fix "a-" (as in "he's a-leavin'" rather than "he's leaving")?

They are applied in some cases, but not others.

Many more isolated languages are particularly strong in things like this, as well as heavy declanations, a plethora of tenses, &c.

German is great for law and science. So is Latin. And they're both utterly devoid of humor. (It's the regularity and lack of ambiguity.) English is shit for law and science, because of the constant evolution, which opens the door for easy manipulation.

313 Sometimes it becomes more complex.

I've read that, in general, the isolated outposts of a language stagnate. It is the main language that changes.

Appalachian is supposedly close to what Colonial English was, French Canadian is similar to what 18th century French was, southern English is similar to what some region in England used to sound like, Pennsylvania Dutch is close to what a dialect (Plattdeutsch? I forget) used to sound like.

i was reading mcwhorter's book, our magnificent bastard tongue, and he was talking about this "a-" prefix, I think he said we stole that from Celtic, but I forget.

I think he said it was used as... i don't know, I forget. I guess as a participle-marker? It came from something like the Celtic "on," so it was originally "on-hunting," then the "n" was dropped, then people realized they didn't need the a- either.

I know the basic construction "I went a-hunting" is pretty old.

we still use it, infrequently, not just appalachians. "a new day a-borning," stuff like that.

After French, adding Italian is easy, for a native English speaker. But German is cool. It's the under-structure of English.

For a native English speaker, learning both French and German is a lot of fun, since English is basically German that's been Frenchified. It's interesting to see the two root languages, in their original forms.

In the book "Albion's Seed," the author, David Hackett Fischer, writes that different parts of the American colonists drew settlers from different parts of Britain and the differences between, say, New England/Boston accents and Southern accents stem from that. The New England Puritans came from East Anglia and the Virginians came from Cornwell and the Southwest of England. British accents are still pretty localized; they were much more so back in the 16th and 17th century. People from East Anglia, Somerset, the border regions (where the back-country southerners came from) ,and the English Midlands (settled in Pennsylvania and Delaware) would barely have been able to understand each other back in the 16th century.

My philological studies have satisfied me that a gifted person ought to learn English (barring spelling and pronouncing) in thirty hours, French in thirty days, and German in thirty years. It seems manifest, then, that the latter tongue ought to be trimmed down and repaired. If it is to remain as it is, it ought to be gently and reverently set aside among the dead languages, for only the dead have time to learn it.

You're probably thinking of 'Tobermory' by 'Saki' (H. H. Munro). The character is an Englishman, not a mahout, and the elixir makes animals able to talk, not abnormally intelligent, but he is killed by an elephant he's trying to teach German irregular verbs. (The main talking animal is Tobermory, a cat.) There should be texts on the web, since it's out of copyright (Munro was shot by a German sniper in 1916).

413 The book "Capt. Sir Richard Francis Burton'" by Edgar Rice is one I highly recommend.

Burton learned 30+ languages the old fashioned way - sleeping with prostitutes. The biography itself goes into detail about the different parts of his career.

Highlights:
1) Was the first white guy to get into Mecca during the Hadj
2) Expedition for the source of the Nile
3) took a spear to the face

Burton's take on the Arabs is still the most accurate thing I've read on the subject.

Highly recommended

No, it only removes the subscriber info from the phone. The hardware it self has at least one GUID and that is likely in the carrier records if you bought the phone at the same time as the subscription or from the same carrier.

If the phone is on without a SIM installed, you can still call 911. And the tower can report the phone's live existence.

My rule of thumb when travelling is to order something that's between the third most expensive and the third least expensive thing on the menu.

I violated that rule in Germany when I looked at the menu and pointed to the item that I wanted (no pictures, just German words) I got a plate of cold jellied luncheon meats with, I think, sliced turnips.

I happen to know a thing or two about this subject.
The only way to neuter a cell phone is to pull the battery. Powering it off is *not* enough.
Pulling the sim card just means you can't get service through a tower. It doesn't mean the mobile antenna stops working.

436 So Bellator and UFC are both running events tonight.
UFC never runs on Friday. But they did tonight just to screw with Bellator and try to hurt their ratings.
Bellator is trying to add a lot more pro wrestling style stuff. They just had a fake brawl between Tito Ortiz and Bonnar -- two ex-UFC guys. Calling each other drug addicts and their wives whores (Ortiz wife was Jenna Jameson so ...).

But it was obviously a planned deal. Kinda silly. Trying to anything to get eyeballs, though. Bellator can't claim to have the best, though, cause UFC has the best, so they have to try something different.

458 Just finished telling my wife about all the GamerGate shit yesterday afternoon, and it's so fucking satisfying. I stopped going to places like Kotaku and Destructoid and io9 and Topless Robot and so many other blogs years ago, because half of their content was mind-numbing "Social Justice In Nerd Culture" garbage. Every single community felt like a far-left enclave where any dissent from certain positions meant ousting. I first noticed it going on with the game Shadow Complex, where boycotts were being called for because the game was based on a book by Orson Scott Card...who was against gay marriage. Any defense of him or suggestion that his work should be separated from his politics was either shouted down and shamed, or simply banned.

Of course, complaining about this fact at the sites vaporized immediately, and trying to discuss the matter with people of similar interests usually does nothing but glaze their eyes over. Now, though...finally it's boiled over enough to get significant attention, and perhaps we can look forward to a routing of the Social Justice Whiners who have been ruining our hobbies, obsessions, and loves with endless angst and guilt trips.
