What if There Was a Coordinated Group Terror and Murder Campaign Against Gays Living In America, and The Media Didn't Report It?

Noah C. Rothman provides the facts of the case, in which a group of men, led by a Ali Mohammad Brown, used the hook-up phone app "Grindr" to arrange liaisons with gay men, before Brown murdered them. (I do not know the extent of the accomplices' involvement.)

Ali Mohammad Brown is a "strict Muslim," according to one press account, and according to prosecutors, was murdering people for terroristic motives, as part of a "bloody crusade" against the US government as vengeance against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Apparently he chose gay men as among the most unrighteous of all possible terror-murder victims.

Did you know any of this?

I didn't.

This is a story tailor-made for the national press but, rather than highlighting it, the opposite has occurred. It seems that the press has sanitized the actions and motives of Brown and his two accomplices. He was not simply a murderer and a criminal, though he was most certainly both of those things. Brown was also a terrorist who targeted a specific group of victims based on their sexual identity. It is quite uncharacteristic of the press to understate those two facts.
Brown's killing spree seems like it should be considered hate crimes at the very least, if not overt acts of terrorism. Why, then, has it not been presented in that fashion in the press?

Some press accounts do paint a full picture of these crimes, but others, Rothman says, sanitize the story for reasons which I assume are all too obvious.

But this is not a national story, definitely! Certainly there is no great chatter about it, no ancillary reportage (as when the press spins off coverage to discuss related issues; witness them just reporting on how journalists do their jobs of journalism in relation to Ferguson), no blistering editorials, no Town Halls hosted by Anderson Cooper about bullying, no Concern from MSNBC.

Today the Washington Post Editorial Board announces it will no longer use the term "Redskins" in any of the zero times it has cause to editorialize about a football team.

Apparently that is a more important story than this one, with more Lessons to Teach Us.

The Matthew Sheppard killing had something to teach us. There were many, many reports about that. It was the most infamous single American murder of that decade.

In this case, three gay men were murdered. Three.

Not even a blip on the national news radar screens.

But they'll tell you, with a straight face, they just report the news as they see it.

The press says what's important to them is the identity of the victims, that they pay special attention when the victims are gay, black, Palestinian... because they are underdogs and need help. That this is why they don't cover crimes against straights or white people or Israelis with the same enthusiasm.

But if you look at their actual behavior, it's not the identity of the victims that determines coverage - it's the identity of the attackers. If the attackers are, variously, white, American, or Israeli, there's coverage. If the same victims are killed or harmed by other groups, not so much.

This is an example: the victims are gay but the attacker's identity does not contribute to the narrative.

Another example: when a white person (or someone they initially think is white and then have to frantically retcon into "white Hispanic") shoots a black person, it's news. If that same person is shot by someone who isn't white, crickets. (See the murder rate by black people in Chicago, most of whose victims are black. See also the ethnic cleansing going on in the LA area - the victims are black, but the perpetrators are Hispanic, not white, so it's not news.)

Another one: when Israelis kill a Gazan, it's news. When Hamas murders Gazans wholesale - not excluding public lynchings and the most hideous torture - it's not news.

Americans play stupid games with Iraqis in jail? Top headlines for months at a time. ISIS uses two cars to pull a woman into two pieces? Yawn. (The ISIS story is news because of its geopolitical significance, but there's little to no Outrageous Outrage over what they do to their victims.)

It's hard to avoid drawing the conclusion that the purpose of victim/victimizer narratives and stories is to weaken, variously, white people, Americans, or Israelis. If the purpose were to support the victims, the stories would still be pushed even if the victimizers weren't in the disfavored groups. But they never are.

The extremely rapid and widespread introduction of the previously obscure "white Hispanic" concept by the media was because the media assumed Zimmerman's last name meant he was Jewish.

I believe there is something called "aggravating circumstances" in criminal law that can be introduced to increase the severity of punishments.I believe (criminal lawyers jump in to correct me) that this element has long/always been there as a tool for the justice system to lean more heavily on crimes with particularly ugly motivations.

But sorry, the very concept of "hate crime" is indefensible idiocy under our system, and always has been. Thus making a nice proxy for one element of our degradation.

So way back a guy on my recreational sports team (great guy, very smart, but inexplicably soaked in lefty judicial mindset) comes in to the locker room, and I asked him about "hate crime" - I think some debate or something was happening on the Hill about the topic. At the time, this guy was directly involved in legislative matters for a major civil rights outfit. He just looked at me, rolled his eyes, and said "don't ask". In other words, he was signalling that yeah, it's all nonsense, totally alien to our criminal justice system and traditions.

So even someone tragically open to incredibly stupid ideas was flabbergasted by the very concept of "hate crimes".

And just as citing Matthew Shephard's murder without noting that it was mostly distorted to be something it never was, using the very term "hate crime" without major denigration and debunking and abuse seems like a perfect example of defeat before the battle has begun. Stop accepting the indefensible, poisonous, stupid, pernicious nonsense of the statists and racists and fascists, including their language and assumptions. That's where the battle is, if there even is one, any more ....
