Saturday Car Thread 01/25/14 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse & KBDaBear]

Howdy, and welcome to another edition of the new and improved Saturday Car Thread. On the menu for today: Hot legs, something so stupid, and Jeeps. KBDB talks small-blocks Chevys, The Shat, and a Libertarian enthusiast.

And away we go!

Voted one of the 10 Best Engines of the 20th Century by Ward's Auto magazine, the Chevy 90 degree V-8 better known as the Chevy Small Block got it's start in the 1955 model year as the 265 cubic inch with overhead valves and hydraulic lifters. Bored out to the iconic 283 in 1957, the Corvette version of the engine was GM's first assembly line engine to achieve 1 hp per cubic inch. Easily scalable, it quickly became a favorite of dirt track racers and hot rodders who with a relatively small cash outlay and a good mechanical aptitude could easily add 50 to 100 hp to the factory version. Using the basic block design, the small block line would later include the 327, 350, smog motor 400, and mild but dependable 307's and 305's.

In the 1980's, GM would incorporate all their separate divisions engines into a single lineup, the engine officially becoming the GM Small Block. The "smog motors" of the 1970's and early 80's would strangle the output of the small block to anemic outputs but improvements in later in the 80's such as electronic fuel injection and engine control computers would put the small block back on the road to revival. In the 1990's GM introduced the first of the LS generations of engines, built on the foundation of the Chevy Small block and today turning out 400 plus hp off the showroom floor. However, the original generation 350 is still so popular with racers and street rodders that GM still produces crate versions that can be ordered and shipped.

Here's a 327 in a Stingray giving a shout out

While searching for today's elbows pic, I Binged 'hot legs and car" and, I swear, this popped up in the results.

William Shatner's 10 Favorite Cars: A few years ago The Shat tweeted a list of his top 10 cars covered here by Jalopnik, then I did my own analysis of the Shat's choices here.

Shatner's picks in order from 10th to 1st - Citroen 2CV, Jaguar D-Type, Dodge Viper, Jaguar XKE, Packard 426, Willys Army Jeep, Mercedes 300SL, Ferrari Enzo, Chevy Corvair, Bugatti Veyron

I used fiberglass boat, 1 Corvair engine, 1 JC Whitney catalog, 4 cheap chrome wheels from Pep Boys, add 1 Earl Scheib paint job equals a chick magnet for a cruisin' Starfleet captain.

[Ed. Note: How cool is that dude?]

Well, this is stupid: Auto-Inspired Names For Girls

P.J. O'Rourke: Car Enthusiast - Many of us in Moron Nation see P.J. O'Rourke as a legend in the universe of libertarian/conservative philosophy but he's also just as insightful, brilliant, and hilarious as an automotive writer. O'Rourkes love for the car goes back to his childhood in Ohio whose family owned Buick dealerships for 3 generations. He's written for Car and Driver, Automobile magazine, has been a featured expert on cars for NPR, and authored Driving Like Crazy, which of course features his famous article How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink.

Cover of a 1994 Automobile magazine featuring PJ's thoughts on cars and environmentalism

More P.J. O'Rourke: KBDB's O'Rourke bit, above, led me to this article about Jeeps. At the risk of repeating myself for the 100th time, I, too, love my Jeep.

23 Here's the latest news from the front lines of the War On Cars:

In the UK, the government relentlessly pushed and prodded drivers to buy diesel cars. To ward off Thermageddon via global warming. Diesel emits less carbon dioxide per distance driven.

Now -- and who could have seen this shocking plot twist coming -- the health and safety mandarinate of the EU are forcing all countries subject to their writ, including the UK, to steeply boost diesel fuel taxes. To discourage emissions of diesel particulates, which are asserted to be a risk to respiratory function.

So, all those drivers who listened to government when they made expensive purchase decisions about vehicles are now being boned by government as a result. The resale values of their cars are tanking.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Will you bothersome members of the serf class finally knock it off with this personal-mobility business and settle down to live in the same area generation after generation without leaving? The only people with a truly proven need to travel (first class, of course) are Your Betters, who provide socially important oversight and supervision of your disorderly lives.

65 Mercedes was named for the daughter of the dealer who spec'ed the car. He vass Chewish, which kind of makes you chuckle when you see a picture of you-know-who in one. Owners should thank their lucky stars it's not called a Jellinek.

It is such a typical modern writer's fuckup that they'd mistake a car named for a girl for a girl named for a car. Honestly, they don't even try any more.

It's been scrubbed from easy research sources, but The Big H strongly preferred the Horch (ask how Audi got its name), and once said something rude about the Benz product, vis-a-vis procurers.

The Austrian branch of Daimler-Benz produced a car named after Jellineck's other daughter. The Maja never really caught on like the Mercedes.

Of course after awhile DB got sick of Jellineck and cut off his supply of free parts. In WWI Jellineck had to flee Nice after being accused of spying.

As for his daughter Mercedes, she had a tragic life. Failed marriage to a minor noble. She died in a small apartment.

Leave overnight, clean the dirt out, let it drain and you are about to have awesome sounding pipes. Also, always take the exhaust pipes up and over the rear axle. That's how you get the most pleasing sound plus what we called "rack-back" when you changed gears. Exhaust sound was an artform in our town.

91 Article on MAVTV as Lucas Oil tries to turn it into the top motorsports TV network to replace Speed after Speed was transformed into Fox Sports 1.

It's a niche, but MAVTV has grown from 4M homes to 62M -- though only 28M in the US.

MAVTV has a lot of the 2nd tier (well, maybe 3rd tier) motorsports. NBC and Fox Sports have the big boys of Nascar, F1, IndyCar. ESPN is in it's last year of Nascar and is, I think, getting completely out of motorsports in 2015.

Lucas Oil sponsors a dozen or so racing series - sprint cars, drag racing, boat racing, tractor pulling, off road, motocross, modifieds, etc, etc. If it has an enginer, Lucas Oil sponsors it.

Speed used to fill their non-Nascar time with these Lucas Oil series. But Fox Sports has UFC and MLB and other content. So Lucas Oil bought MAVTV to have a home for these lesser known racing series.

It'll always be a niche, but good to see somebody trying to serve that market.

My family had an early model Civic with one of those.
The intake manifold was located too close to the exhaust manifold, and the overheating decomposed incoming gasoline mist and coked up the manifold and the valves. It was a lemon, a disaster.

Posted by: gdonovan at August 16, 2014 05:18 PM (Ipxoj)

The Hemi had a 30 year lag in production cars, sold as crate engines for Fuelies and Pro Stock. The small block Chevy was the engine of choice for modified dirt track since it revved instantly and didn't make the car nose heavy. Kind of important when you're spending almost all of your time turning to the left.

I'm surprised I didn't get protest from the small block Ford guys. The 289 and 302's were fine engines, and they love the 351 Windsor almost as much as the 351 Cleveland

Best power to weight ratio, fast revving, the Chevy Small Block was the king of the hill.

135 It is pretty well known that a properly blue printed small block 305 Chevy will produce 500 HP. Basically you adjust everything to the favorable end of their tolerances and 500 HP is the result. The neat thing about that is that the engine is eligible for pure stock classes, since it absolutely measures as a stock engine and is street legal.

181 Also, from Edmunds, regarding tires:

The DOT code is used by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to track
tire production for recall purposes. If a tire proves to be defective,
this number helps keep track of where these tires ended up so buyers
can be notified of the problem. At the end of the DOT code you'll find a
four-digit number. This is the manufacturing date of the tire. The
first two digits stand for the week; the other two are the year. For
example, if your tire had "1613" listed, it was manufactured on the
16th week of 2013.

196 Cleveland will be good because they will let Johnny football play street ball. It will take some time (like 10 games or so) for defenses to figure out what he is doing, and then, like RGIII, they will shut him down. Johnny Football will be good for a year.

Right, but what I want to know is how do they count weeks? Where do they start from?

In 2013, January 1st was on a Tuesday. Is that the first week, or does it start with the first full week? That could be Sunday the 6th or Monday the 7th.

199 You have to remember that devil spawn Jerruh wanted Garrett for a couple of years before he hired him. To fire him skid mark Jerruh would have to admit he was wrong. Another shitty season and I don't think he'll have a choice. Won't matter either way as the problem is not the head coach. Jimmie built the team in the 90's. Once shit gurgler Jerruh fired him it was over.

I would venture to guess that the counting starts with January 1st. If Jan 1st is on a Saturday, Week 1 of the year begins the previous Sunday. This is how we label our manufacturing also. Whatever week contains Jan 1 is week 1.

These high-dollar car auctions are pretty strange events. partly it's just a dick-swinging contest, which sees middle-aged gold-chainers bidding crazy money mainly to impress the eye candy on their arm, and partly it's a case of cronies bidding up each other's cars, and swapping cars back and forth at notionally high prices, so they can at some point in the future donate a "three-million dollar '57 Chevy" to a museum, and claim a big fat tax writeoff.

Heh. Yesterday, my day was spent in starting up cars, so I could move them and mow the grass where they stood. #1 was a VW Super Beetle, and it started easily, because it had been moved there only a week before. #2 was a '64 Studebaker Wagonaire, and it took a lot of cranking and priming before it started and stayed running. Always was cold-blooded, that car. #3 was a '65 Olds Delta 88 with the 425 engine and TH400 tranny. Got it going, and warmed up, and took it for a spin down the grid road. Gotta love that boot in the ass when you step on the gas. No substitute for torque. And #4 was an '88 Chevy Suburban with the 6.2 liter Diesel in it. Took it for a boot up the road today. And I fed two cans of ersatz Freon into the A/C, and it blows cold air. Woo-hoo!
