Obama Wins One: Maliki Steps Down

I assume this is good -- everyone says that al-Maliki was bad for Iraq (and bad for US interests), and I've never heard anyone on the right speak up for him.

Obama had long said he would not commit resources to aid the Iraq government until al-Maliki stepped down -- and I sincerely hope that with this obstacle now cleared, we can kill some IS fighters.

Eli Like predicted this last night on the podcast, citing just this event, noted by Allah:

It was Sistani’s letter a few days ago demanding a new prime minister that sunk him, apparently. Without a Shiite base of support, he had nothing.

Obama is now claiming that the siege of Sinjar is broken, however, and now the "majority" of the combat -- I mean, non-combat-- personnel assigned to this mission can depart the country.

The UN disagrees:

Good God.

I think he really does support Tom Friedman's idea of "no victor, no vanquished" in warfare.

Tom Friedman suggested that he does agree, in a column about an interview he had with Obama. He didn't claim he'd asked the president if he agreed (and I wonder why he didn't...? Perhaps he was worried that the president would openly agree...?), but suggested that what Obama said to him was consistent with Friedman's own "no victor, no vanquished" theory of war.

So, the Islamic State cannot be humiliated with a "vanquishing" defeat?

What?

Talk about an "uncertain trumpet."

14 So IS sub-animals can go on slaughtering people wholesale because the siege is "broken." I guess being killed in the valley is better than starving to death or dying of thirst on the mountain.

And we all know that there is no way, no way, I say, that's none of these IS things would ever make their way to any western country.

22 For what it's worth, this guy makes the point that we need to just keep killing young Arab men until we get to three million.

General William Tecumseh Sherman burned the city of Atlanta in 1864. He warned: "I fear the world will jump to the wrong conclusion that because I am in Atlanta the work is done. Far from it. We must kill three hundred thousand I have told you of so often, and the further they run the harder for us to get them." Add a zero to calibrate the problem in the Levant today. War in the Middle East is less a strategic than a demographic phenomenon, whose resolution will come with the exhaustion of the pool of potential fighters.

121 About this "no victor, no vanquished" bullshit:

I can't remember who it was -- Stan McChrystal? -- but someone within DoD wrote, after dealing with Obama early on in his first term, that they were struck by the flat categorical refusal by Obama to state "victory" as being an end-state goal for America's military engagements abroad.

Nevertheless, in any fight between two ideologies, if one of the two believes in victory, and the other of the two does not believe in victory, expect for there to be a victory and expect for it to go to the former.

Choom Boy's godlike power is absolute now. And I'm betting the "fairness" eunuchs at Tepid Air are busy doing the Happy Dance knowing that Bad Optics have been kept at bay.

207 So, the Islamic State cannot be humiliated with a "vanquishing" defeat?

Since I am already tagged with the scarlet 'R', I can say this with a degree of impunity . . .

Human populations differ.

Semites differ from the rest of humanity in some important ways. I am part Semitic myself so I see this with the Jews and with the Arabs alike: for Semites, the written word has an importance which borders on the mystical. A Jew simply cannot understand when a western Christian speaks of "the curse of the Law". The written Law, to a Jew, is a blessing. So it was to Hammurabi's Akkadian-speaking Babylonians. And so it is to Arab Muslims. I'd be surprised if even Syrian Christians talked about "the curse of the law" very much (and they are no fans of Jews).

Arabs, in turn, differ from Jews and Syriac Christians in some important ways. Relevant here, Arabs appreciate strength. They do look out for the weak among their tribe - orphans, widows, those crippled in battle - but the operative sense here is pity. The Arab would not say "blessed are the weak". It'd make his head spin to hear it.

So the only way to defeat a bandit gang which happens to be run by Arabs, is to defeat it. Make it known that the gang is weak.

As for Islam at large, it would help - if I am right about the Semitic mindset - if it could be demonstrated across the Near East that the Muslims' written kitab is not Divine.

211 Ah, "no victors, no vanquished."

I presume Friedman is not claiming this is a historical fact (um, Rome vs. Carthage, Yanks vs. Rebs, Allies vs Axis., etc. etc.), but rather that this is how war SHOULD be.

And yes, some wars do "end" with "no victors, no vanquished." But guess what? When that happens, hostilities simmer forever and things get worse and never resolve themselves and the animus doesn't end until the war re-ignites and someone finally does win, or until one side just implodes through the pressure of attrition after decades.

Look at three famous examples of modern wars with "no victors, no vanquished":

1. Korean War. Still raging. Active shooting stopped only due to a ceasefire. Nobody won. Result? Country divided, half the population living in epic tragedy, the other half fearing missiles at any moment, the world constantly having to police the border, etc. Yay! So much better than a decisive victory for the good guys.

2. The Arab-Israeli War. Israel has won major battles, but never fully conquered the enemy. The fighting stops for a bit, and then inevitably breaks out again, through state or non-state actors, over and over ever since 1948. Result? Israel constantly living under threat, Pal. Arabs living in isolation, extremism breeding there endlessly. If Israel had truly won, just had the leash let go and kicked ass, they'd control everything from the Jordan to the Nile, and the Arabs who lived there would be a zillion times better off, with prosperity, voting rights, no extremism, etc. But no. Better to have "no vanquished."

3. The Chinese Civil War. Raging since 1911. Still unresolved. Nationalists retreated to Formosa, set up superior society. Communists seized mainland, plunged it into totalitarianism. Nationalists still regard themselves as legitimate rulers of all China; Communists regard Taiwan as "breakaway province." They're still at war, but too afraid to shoot. Yay! So much better than a unified country at peace.

Friedman: Thou art buffoon.

The caliphate (don't call it "ISIS") will move south *before* crushing Iraq. They didn't wait to crush Syria before taking all those towns on the map.

The caliph'll tell the Arabs in Saudi-occupied Arabia that they're offering the same shari'a but with a track-record of victory.

Considering that the most fundamental strain of Sunni Islam, Wahhabism, originated in SA, I would say that the Saudi royal family has got to crapping in their pants right now. Because IS is predominately Sunni, they could turn their sights on SA and overthrow the House of Saud because they are not "pure" enough, and the oil money may not buy them off like they've been doing for decades. I ran the URL through the McAfee SiteAdvisor.com and it came up clean.

VirusTotal.com gives it a 0/58 detection ratio.

A Google search didn't flag it.

It sounds like either it's a legit Java update, or your machine already had the problem.

313 Yeah, she also dated Bob Guccione, Jr, while he was publisher of Penthouse.

Alphagame will out, for some females.

This is why I don't bother with MKH, by the way - at least, not for politics. She married a (successful) liberal activist. That means that she doesn't take politics very seriously. Which is fine . . . except that the only reason she gets any attention on the Internet at all is because she writes about politics.

Suppose Andrew Bostom or a similar counterjihad author married a woman in niqab and the woman continued merrily preaching in CAIR-sponsored masajid. Would we really take Bostom seriously after that? I'd suspect Bostom of playing games.

Bostom wouldn't do it. But Ham did.

I'm happy for Ham personally, but I won't take her seriously as a political thinker.

I thought that there would have more build -up as well, but it's a GTO, so how much does it need. There are quite a few other "cheaper" Ferraris coming up, so I guess since those buyers still have money in their pockets, they are primed to spend it.

So that means we'll get to hear Obama sing his favorite cut from Let It Be: "I, Me, Mine"

But if this ultimately, through a series of twists and turns, becomes a negative development, we're guaranteed to get Obama's other favorite song: "It Wasn't Me"
