Saturday Car Thread 8/9/2014- [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse and KBDaBear]

Happy Saturday and welcome to new and improved Saturday Car Thread.

Due to returning to work and because of travel, posting has been spotty as of late. My former co-blogger, Countrysquire, hasn't had much luck in his schedule either. Now, another Moron rides to the rescue: Welcome long-time Moron KBDaBear to this week's edition of the car thread. I'm hoping he'll stick around for a while.

And with that, take it away KBDB!

In the late 20's, GM took notice of the work of a custom coach builder for a Los Angeles Cadillac dealership named Harley Earl, who had designed custom bodies for many of Hollywood's stars of the Silent Era. Commissioned to design the 1927 LaSalle, the success of the model convinced GM to hire Earl to head GM's new body design department. Earl brought in new concepts of automotive designing such as modeling clay and one-off Concept Cars to test consumer reaction to new ideas. Under Earl's direction for the next 32 years, production cars would evolve from steel boxes on wheels to integrated streamlined works of art formerly done only by custom coach builders.

Topping off with the introduction of the Corvette in 1953, the 1950's would be the glory years of Harley Earl's era
with the tail-fins and wraparound windshields reflecting the designers fascination with aircraft, and large bumper bullets reflecting Harley and his design crew's fascination with big boobs.

Cars have become so technically advanced in our age that we take for granted the inventions that changed driving a car from something slightly less challenging than herding bulls to something we do while checking the Morning News dumps or Tweeting kitteh pics on the dashboard interface. While most non gearheads would not know nor care about the first unibody, the first fuel injected engine, or the first alternator, there are many which are apparent like power steering, heating, air conditioning, and GPS which enable men to ask for directions without turning in their Man Cards.

What I believe is one of the top 5 is the electric starter. Prior to pushing a button or turning a key, the engine had to be started with a hand crank which was not only hard work, but resulted in not a few broken bones and separated shoulders. After that invention, starting your car no longer posed a risk of serious bodily harm with the exception of Chevy Cobalt owners or anyone who pissed off the mob.

Cars in TV Shows: Rockford's Firebird, Penny's VW Cabrio, George's Jon Voigt Car, Jerry's Saab 9000, Magnm's Ferrari 308, Sonny Crockett's Testarossa, Sam Malone's 1964 Vette, just many examples of a car's supporting and starring role in many popular TV shows. In “My Mother the Car” and “Knight Rider” the cars even had speaking roles, and in the case of KITT it was a better actor and better singer than Der Hoff.

My personal favorite TV Car? It was the 1962 Corvette from Route 66. I just LOVED that car

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee: Jerry hasn't sat idle these last 16 years collecting residuals, this site features Jerry picking an unusual, classic, or iconic car and picking up a fellow comedian, driving to a coffee shop, and enjoying a cup of coffee together. Jerry and his guest discuss the car they're in or cars in general, then talk about what they've been doing over the cup of coffee. I was surprised at how good the episode with Letterman was, as Dave was quite normal and interesting. I strongly recommend skipping the Sarah Silverman episode unless you like listening to a foul mouthed obnoxious motormouth who never shuts up. There's funny reunions with Jason Alexander and Larry David too.

Jay Leno's Garage: When you have some time, check out Jay's website. He's got a massive collection of classics and supercars that he's quite knowlegeable of as he gives histories and details, then he takes the cars out for drives north of Burbank.

35 I like most electronic goodies but I still have a problem with electronic door locks and electric windows.
I have had more issues with those g d things. Leave your window down in a shower and all of sudden you have $700-800 repair on your hands. Not to mention the damn things are death traps in a flash flood situation. Need to get out quickly? Better have a hammer handy.

I liked the episodes with Louis CK, Robert Klein, and especially the one with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. Both are widowers and live near each other. So, Mel Brooks walks over to Carl's house every evening and they eat dinner together off tv trays while watching a movie.

41 Loved those cars. When did power steering become widely available? I remember driving someones Mustang that you could turn with a finger. Amazing new development! My 57 Chevy took all I had to parallel park with 2 hands yanking on that wheel.

Not really. You turn on the power and coast or push the car off and pop the clutch. Starts right up. They didn't have keys either. Course, driving the only car in five miles, you might be easy to catch. Vic told me.

63 Something I miss that the old cars had? Character and style. Another thing is the floor vents. You could open them up and fresh air would come rushing in. The vent windows maximized air flow in the cabin. Made hot days bearable.

69 This week I'm taking a '67 Chevy on a 1100 mile trip to the Woodward Ave. Dream Cruise.

30,000 collector cars descend on an 18 mile stretch of Woodward Ave, Motor City, for one day.

Last time I went I sat in a lawn chair by the side of the road and watched for 7 hours and was entertained the entire time.

70 My 63 Valiant has vent windows, and no a/c, just right for fossils like me. Mrs. E just handed me a snail about as big as my thumb nail. I asked is it still alive? She said no. I asked is it dead? She said no. On closer inspection, I asked is it a fossil? She said yes. She picked it up in our driveway.

74 The last car my parents bought new (could afford to buy) was a 1962 Valiant. Wonderful little car, looked great, etc. The tranny went out and all my youth that car sat in our driveway with people dropping by offering to buy it. Finally my dad sold it.

Crazy thing, had push button automatic transmission, it looked space age to me as a kid. If I had the money I'd buy one and get it retromodded for my brother, who was born in 1962. He probably would have gotten the car if my parents hadn't needed the money.

1)How does liking cars make us racist?

2)Are Buick station wagons (Enclave) popular everywhere or did a fleet of them fall off a boat here? We started noticing them because there were 2 at church, in the same color, with the same school bumper sticker. And then we saw another, same color, same sticker, but with different people in it. Then I was at Walmart a couple months ago and there were two parked in the same aisle my van was in while another drove past. My neighbor had people visiting and two of the 3 vehicles were Enclaves. So...yeh. Lots of them.

I had a 64 Valiant in 10th grade (1964) with 273 V8/4spd. The 63 I have now is slant six with push button. 19.8 mpg in town, and will bark the tires. You can find them on the intertoobs occasionally. I let a good one get by this past week.

Yes, Ferrari North America turned down a request by the production company to use real Ferrari's in Miami Vice, so they bought two corvette based replica Ferrari Daytonas. About a month ago mentioned to Golfboy about a silver M3 at Performance BMW in Chapel Hill. 2005 only 42K miles. Yeah that would work for me as the killer hobby car. Never followed through.

Moved him home Friday was a week ago (as some may remember from an earlier post) and had a M3 roll up behind me and beyond. 20 day tag. Dude bought my car. Hope he likes it.

Then moving GB back to the liberal bastion of Chapel Hill today passed what I am convinced is the same car headed northbound.

Dammit. Should've scratched off that check. Will regret that for some time.

42K miles. It had to be immaculate.

98 Just upgraded my 2011 fit to a 2015 fit.

They have refreshed the line with major upgrades.

More powerful engine that gets better fuel economy.

Premium package that now has moonroof, leather, heated seats, rear camera, left turn camera, side mirror winkers and touch screen command center.

They have also improved the ride quality and reduced the road noise leakage.

All of those upgrades and they only raised the price of the vehicle $500 dollars.

All in all, I am pretty darn happy with the upgrade.

My new Mazda 5 has electronic windows and locks, but there is also a manual lock on the inside of each door that work when the power is off.

It's the first car I've had with electronic windows and door locks. I never particularly wanted them; cranks always worked fine for me. I always thought they were just more things to break, but I've been told that they're actually pretty reliable and that the electric motors don't cost that much.

I had a Morris Minor that I used to start with the crank, when it's weak old battery wasn't up to the job. A whole 800 cc's of surging raw horsepower it was, so not very hard to crank it up. Also had a VW kombi with a starter crank, and it was also easy to start that way. I also used to start VW's by putting a spark plug socket on a 3/8" ratchet, and put it on the generator pulley. Slowly crank the engine around until you feel one cylinder come up on compression, and then give it a fast flip. Usually it stated, and the ratchet would spin around for a while and finally fall off. Good times.

I despise automatic transmissions - even in Houston traffic. (I have a six speed manual in my G35). But to each his own.

Yes I know modern auto trans accelerate faster and get better fuel economy on the road - but that is because the manuals intentionally don't have the gear ratio spread that modern auto transmissions do. The manufacturers don't want to have to repair missed shift damage on manual transmissions hence the intentional crippling.

The only "must haves" for me on that list are A/C and cupholders.

My Mazda 5 is the base model without any options, and it has everything except power seats and backup sensors.

No automatic transmission, either, but that was by choice. When I went to take a look at it, the dealer had 10 Mazda 5s on the lot, and only one of them had a manual transmission. Guess which one I bought?

When I was researching cars prior to buying, I was really shocked how many SUVs are automatic-only. I would have thought that they would at least have offered manuals as an option, but no.

I do like the keyless entry, though. It's nice being able to lock and unlock the doors just by pressing a button on the key fob. This is the first time I've ever had that.

(Yes, I realize that the Mazda 5 is not a sexy performance car, but you'll just have to get used to me talking about it. Humor me. It's only the fifth car I've ever owned, and the first new car I've ever bought.)

What I value the most about keyless entry is never worrying about locking keys in car. In fact, I leave my key in the car at all times. Either in the ignition or under the seat.

Rented a 2014 Ford Fusion last week, and it had all that shit on the steering wheel. Did not like! Also had a goofy turn signal switch with electronic cancel on it, and a flasher that did not click. Result: I spent too much time driving down the freeway like an old fart with the turn signal blinking. And it had a pretty punk radio in it, too. Good features? Plenty of zip, and good gas mileage. Would never buy one.

Well, I did begin to get used to it. More to the point, got used to checking that it had in fact canceled. Also the cruise control buttons, which are legitimately on the steering wheel, had the "resume" button inboard of not one, but two "set" buttons, so it was hard to hit "resume" without hitting "set". And you use "resume" probably the most of all the cruise buttons. Also don't like the fact that you have to turn cruise on every time. My older cars with cruise, if it's on, it's on, regardless of how many times the car has been shut down. Probably some cockamamie safety issue....

I know because I made what I thought was a perfectly reasonable decision one time to start the car (cold cold day), run back inside and wait for it to warm up. And in my neighborhood back then, you didn't leave running cars unattended.

Now, there's a pet peeve of mine. Those idiots who habitually drive with both their fog lights and headlights on. Tends to blind oncoming drivers, and it's also bad policy for the driver of the offending vehicle, because his pupils contract in response to the huge pool of bright light close to his car, and make him blind to dim objects near the limit of his headlights' range. Stuff that could kill him, like railway trains in level crossings.

Fog lights should be wired so that they cannot be turned on if the headlamps are on. Because in real fog (or in blowing snow), you can see better with your fog lamps if the headlamps are off. Less back-scatter from the low-mounted fog lamps. Headlamps on too, and the back-scatter from them renders you blind.

My 6 is a manual trans. It was a bitch getting a 2014 in soul red with a stick so I had to get a 2015. The mazda dude said a manual trans is only like 20% of the market. I had to move up to the touring version because the sport model didn't have the touch screen with the manual. The manual in the 6 shifts like a dream, super smooth, the shifter throw is short, and the ratio is great. The wife also got a 6, but with an auto, and hers feels like a completely different car. The whole attitude of the car is different. Its night and day. The stick makes mine feel like twice the car. Her's may get 1 mpg more than mine on paper, but mine gets 450 miles to a tank of gas, so fuck that extra 1 mpg. The grand touring version isn't even available with a stick. That's plain out retarded.

With the Mazda 5, only the low-end Sport version is available with a manual. So I don't have any bells and whistles. Not that I really needed them, since I never had them in my old car.

Car & Driver says that the Mazda 5 is the only sliding-door minivan-type vehicle sold in North America that is available with a stick, and only about 5% of buyers opt for it.

Of course, you'd expect that a stick would be more popular with sedan buyers than with minivan buyers.

I have a bad back and numbing in my left leg. When I lived in L.A. I very much appreciated an automatic transmission when stuck in traffic or stopped on a hill. Here in Florida you have to have A/C or you end up on the next news item that starts with "Florida man...."

Parking a car or turning on residential streets gives one an appreciation for power steering, they were godsends to women in the 50's when it became more commonplace.

But there's another item which isn't integral to the function of the car but it's one few of us would want to do without, and that's the radio/stereo/sound system/whatever. How else would us Morons have gotten our daily brainwashing from Rush and H8 radio if not for that feature

Well, you are only fooling yourself. It's been quite conclusively proven that the "pool of light" phenomenon basically fucks your distance vision. You will see everything close, including roosting owls and dogs fucking in the ditch, but potential hazards half a mile down the road? Fugeddaboudit.

We have moose here. They weigh half a ton, and their body mass is right at windshield level, and they have very dark coats. You have to keep your night vision sharp to see those fuckers.
