A BBC gardening show has been seriously accused of "racism."

The reason? Because they speak about things such as soil purity and the dangers of non-native species.

I'm not kidding.

According to an academic, the sedate Radio 4 panel show is riddled with "racial meanings" disguised as horticultural advice.

...

But Dr Ben Pitcher, a senior lecturer in sociology at the University of Westminster, claimed the programme's regular discussions on soil purity and non-native species promoted nationalist and fascist beliefs....

Speaking on another Radio 4 programme, Thinking Allowed, the academic said: "Gardeners' Question Time is not the most controversial show on Radio 4, and yet it is layered with, saturated with, racial meanings....

He claims that this show is being broadcast "in the context" of the rise of nationalist politics in Europe -- and that gardening tips are just a secret code for expressing ideas of racial purity and cultural sanctity.

Dr Pitcher said the "crisis in white identity in multicultural Britain" meant people felt unable to express their views for fear of being called racist, so expressed their racial identity in other ways, such as talking about gardening.

This might come to a shock to Y-Not and WeirdDave.

On the other hand, maybe it doesn't come as a shock to them at all.

Hey, maybe I should be reading the Gardening Thread more regularly.

I had no idea that it offered me the opportunity to put in for the White Race.

Speaking on the same programme, Lola Young, a crossbench peer and former professor of cultural studies, backed Dr Pitcher's analysis.

She added: "I remember back in the late 80s-early 90s when rhododendrons were seen as this huge problem, and people were talking about going out rhododendron-bashing.

"That was at a time when Paki-bashing was something that was all too prevalent on our streets."

The people in the show deny this, and, for the moment, the BBC is claiming to support them.

We'll see how long the BBC holds out.

Now, you may think this is all nonsense, but I looked up their podcast, and what do I see, right away, right at the top?

Training dwarf cherries and suggestions for keeping raspberries in their place are two of the topics covered this week. Peter Gibbs hosts the horticultural panel programme from Shropshire. Chris Beardshaw, Bob Flowerdew and Bunny Guinness join him to answer the audience's questions.

This doesn't "just happen," people.

Thirty years ago there was a big controversy about whether to build I-70 through Glenwood Canyon or continue with the two lane blacktop that caused multiple traffic deaths every year. eventually they decided to build it but they hired people, including one of my friends, to spray some stuff on the rock to make it look aged thereby preserving the "natural" beauty of the canyon.

Maybe we could do something similar with you. You know, the Rainbow Cliffs of Dover.

Gardening is a white people's hobby.

Therefore, like all white people things, it must be condemned.

The progressives here in the Bay Area have gone to insane lengths to get black people to take up gardening -- er, "urban farming" -- to absolutely no avail. Try as they might, the leftist can't get the underclass to eat vegetables, much less grow them.

So, as a fallback position, gardening itself is now condemned as racist.

One all-time BBC low-light, topical due to Gaza festivities: obnoxious BBC "news" anchor interviewing non-English native speaker IDF spokesman during a dust-up (West Bank, mid-90s, I think), IDF had just withdrawn from Jenin or some such. Anchor asks (in obnoxious supercilious oxbridge BBC manner) "Did you withdraw because you'd killed enough people?" IDF spokesman (stunned, silent for a moment, prob. not sure he understood correctly): "Uh, no, we had complete our operation and found the terrorists we had targeted".

220 Political Correctness is a War on Noticing.

It makes sense they would denounce this.
Every species evolves to survive and thrive in the environment it lives in. This is how species develop and diverge.

This is how homo sapiens arose. And this is how different races and ethnicities arose -- by adapting to the environment. Variation in skin lightness is due to different groups living with different amounts of sunshine. Low Vitamin D is bad. Groups living in northern latitudes evolved lighter skin to produce more Vitamin D. Those that did survived better and passed on their genes. Closer to the equator, where sunshine is plentiful year round, darker skin is better to limit the harmful effects of UV radiation, like cancer.

The Left is committed to the scientifically false idea that race/ethnicity is a social construct. So they have to deny the idea even among animals. Even among plants.

It's insane. Cause we can admit racial and ethnic differences without going full nazi. But they are convinced that acknowledging biological differences is racist.

So .. War on Noticing.

Today we take people from sun-scorched deserts of Somalia and relocate them to Minnesota and are stunned when they fail to thrive.

It's literally retarded. We've gone backwards. A farmer from the 19th century could explain why that's probably a bad idea.

And we have plenty of sun-scorched deserts in America where Somalis would do much better in. I'm not even saying keep the Somalis out. But putting them in Minnesota is insane.

Must be a locality difference. In Detroit, many of the hardy minority residents that still own a home (usually the only one on the block)have been gardening the vacant lots.

There is also a huge move by the urban hipsters to get farming back underway in the open lots. Actually, it's not a bad idea, if it weren't for the evening shootings.

YES! This exact thesis was clearly enunciated in a brilliant article deconstructing the Bay Area "edible schoolyard" projects (endorsed by Michelle O, no less), and the author got raked over the coals for suggesting it was racism to train the children of sharecroppers and farm workers to go back out in the fields again to harvest food.

In fact, it just dawned on my that I already blogged about it here:

http://tinyurl.com/oltxb8d

The Elitism and Racism of "Local Food" and the Edible Schoolyard

"Think again. The Edible Schoolyard, Alice Waters, and her entire worldview were utterly demolished in a devastating expose published in last month's Atlantic magazine which is actually the best piece of journalism I've seen so far this year. Before you click that link, however, first read this nice summary of the article published on the SFGate blog to properly prepare yourself for the experience of Caitlin Flanagan's expose:

'Flanagan argues that time that should be spent on reading, writing and arithmetic is wasted on teaching children how to grow vegetables. This green-thumbing of students undermines their education and will ultimately turn them into field laborers, or, as she puts it, "intellectual sharecroppers.'"

At the root of all evil is Waters and her Edible Schoolyard -- a program she founded at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley that helped inspire the school garden movement. Flanagan essentially sees Waters, an advocate of locally-grown and organic food, as a gastronomic elitist who has no business shaping the curricula of public schools."

The progressives here in the Bay Area have gone to insane lengths to get black people to take up gardening -- er, 'urban farming' -- to absolutely no avail. Try as they might, the leftist can't get the underclass to eat vegetables, much less grow them."

Fascinating historical tidbit:

The guy who wrote Goldwater's "extremism in the defense of liberty" speech was Karl Hess.

Four years after the 1964 wipeout loss, Hess was living in the black ghetto and teaching "urban farming". He figured that classical self-reliance rugged-individualism libertarianism was going to be a good fit with the then-booming black separatist movement.

Of course, what happened then was that black separatists quietly realized that if they really did separate from white society, they'd be separating from the Great Society, too. And losing all of the cushy welfare-state goodies that the guy who _was_ elected in 1964 was starting to pipeline their way.

So black separatism withered on the vine pretty fast, and so did the abortive attempt by Hess to teach urban blacks how to grow produce.

Of course, in Detroit, growing your own food means that many fewer trips that you have to take down to the local market... I can think of some very good reasons to be willing to weed your own garden in those circumstances.

Though the big problem would seem to be having to worry about people stealing the stuff you've grown. My parents had a couple of fruit trees in their front yard, and kept losing stuff to people who'd stop by and steal anything that looked remotely ripe.

344 "Setting aside the fact that he can't structure the paper, he sourced half of it from biography.com and half from stonewall_something.com. And he just reproduces every bit of leftist slant built into both. And he'll probably get an A."

Yep.

So the current trend in higher ed, near as I can figure, is that the cultural left faculty had a bit of a panic. In that they suddenly started getting competition from pop culture courses.

What would you rather sit through as an undergrad? A tedious dose of Frantz Fanon, including turgid selections from _The Wretched Of The Earth_, or a course in "The Semiotics of Superman", where all you have to read are comic books? (Excuse me: "graphic novels".)

So what the cultural leftists have done to entice students back into the more overtly leftist courses has been to abandon any pretense of disciplined scholarship.

There are tools now which university professors can use to spot Internet plagiarism. IF the profs opt to use them, that is. Guess the loophole. You can take that boring Fanon course and pretty much just phone it in; submit stuff cut and pasted directly from wikipedia without it being verified as your own work, and pocket an easy A.

The students and profs are both aware that the system is being cynically gamed, and they're both okay with that. It suits both their differing purposes. The students are happy not to have to work, and the profs are happy to keep the jobs in which they pretend to work.

I absolutely guarantee that if I had the proper set of consonants attached to the right area of study behind my name-

I would be wasting a huge portion of my life putting out "papers" and "studies" and warnings and laughing as each leftard bit and ran with it.

I figure I'd've scammed King Putt a good 25-30 times by now.

And yes, I denounce myself and my incipient villainy.

415 Hmmm. Thinky thought. Given the current population of Detroit, is farming on vacant lots still urban farming? Seriously, are those areas that are nearly wholly abandoned actually still urban areas?
Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD. Now with extra taunting. at August 06, 2014 04:41 PM (mf5HN)

Does having a broken streetlight and a clogged storm drain qualify?
Of course, Detroit does have it's share of white liberal guilt over "farms". Grosse Pointe is a tony group of enclaves that share a border with Detroit, separated only by a street. Last week, two small temporary barns were built on the street to support a farmer's market. People are upset and outraged that they were built in the street, because surely this was an attempt at barricading out black residents of Detroit. That charge comes from both the black community and the wealthy white community.

417 Humor aside, gardening is one thing that exists in the English soul. I can't help but wonder if this is some type of progressive attach against what makes the English, English???

This has its roots (SWIDT again?) in the Frankfurt Skool and the tactic of Critical Theory, wherein each and every facet of the targeted society is relentlessly attacked. Even when there is nothing wrong with it, as in this case.

Some people are natural fault-finders and will naturally gravitate towards any harpy shrills, much like a moth is drawn to a flame. However, this example is nothing but insanity writ large and transmitted by radio.

422 True story.

When I was in college, during a particularly drunken revelry, a couple of like-minded conservative fraternity brothers and I decided to conduct an experiment -- a sociology experiment, of a sort.

We were interested in exploring how easily liberal guilt could be manipulated to affect University administrator behavior.

The college had a number of fun activities it conducted at the beginning of the year. Among them was "Sumo Wrestling" where contestants would don large padded Sumo wrestler suits, waddle around and pretend to wrestle.

We made an anonymous call to the Dean's office pretending to complain about "...the hostile environment this activity created for persons of Japanese ancestry in view the cultural reverence the Japanese people attached to the sacred rituals of the Sumo ....blah ... blah... blah..." and some such similar PC bullshit.

It did not take ten minutes for someone from the Dean's office to come flying in to put an end to the Sumo wrestling, right then and there.

Quite amused by this, we next turned our attention on the building of a human pyramid....

423 True fact:

Both watermelons and peanuts are native to Africa.

When the slaves were brought to the New World, they recognized these familiar foods (which had been brought here earlier by British botanists) and preferred them, and then starting growing them in their own personal gardens on the plantations, which is why both watermelons and "goobers" (the Gullah/African name for peanuts) became associated with (at first) slaves and later with freed slaves and their descendants.

And although that is a real historical fact, I am now a racist for noting that the facts exists.

431 Watermelons, yes, native to Africa, probably Namibia, along with a lot of other cucurbits. But true peanuts, Arachis, are actually South American natives, from around what's now Paraguay. What the West African slaves were familiar with was a very similar legume, the bambara bean, Vigna subterranea, which is still popular in around Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, countries in that sort of area.

True.

BUT....

...while peanuts are not NATIVE to Africa, they were in fact introduced there fairly early on by European traders, so that by the time of the latter part of the slave trade, the Africans had already been growing peanuts for decades or centuries and were familiar with them (and in many areas made them part of the "local cuisine").

So, crazily, the peanut was brought from the New World to Africa, naturalized there, and then when the Africans were brought by force to the New World, they recognized "their" plant there. Weird!

It'd be like if Chinese from Szechuan went to Mexico, they'd say, "Hey, look how strange -- they have peppers here too!"
