Obama: "We tortured some folks"

"Some folks."

This has long been Obama's position, and a position of the left generally -- that the three terrorist commanders (aka "some folks") we waterboarded were unjustly and cruelly "tortured."

It's not entirely surprising, then, that he should say this, but the offhanded flippancy of it does surprise.

Also surprising, though it should not be: The left likes to claim that they see the "nuances" and "context" of actions, whereas the right "simplifies" the facts into an easily-understood "morality play."

Nitwit British alleged comedian Russell Brand just criticized Sean Hannity for calling Hamas "terrorists." Brand argued that this is "simplistic" as it fails to take into account "the context."

The context he offers is this: Hamas is weaker, militarily, and is thus forced to do things which "we might perceive" as terrorist actions.

In other words, any group in a fight with a stronger group has the right to kidnap and murder hitchhiking teenagers, because, you know. You can do anything if you're judged to be the "weaker" party.

I wonder if, when those teenagers were being murdered by Hamas thugs, they felt as if they were the "dominant, hegemonic" power-players in that situation.

But to return to Obama: While the left claims it speaks in "nuances" and with all relevant "context" added -- that they are fact and science based (I love science) -- note how simplistically Obama puts this.

"We tortured some folks."

I don't see a lot of context there. I don't see the context that one of these three men was Khalid Sheik Mohammad, Osama bin Ladin's then number two, the man who quarterbacked the 9/11 terrorist operation that slaughtered nearly 3000 people, and the man with the contact information for terrorists who would revisit that same tragedy upon us again, if permitted to.

No mention that this process, waterboarding, has no permanent or even short-lasting effects at all, or that it is used on our own troops in order to prepare them for the treatment they will receive at the hands of enemy captors.

But no -- in Obama's formulation, "We tortured some folks."

"Context." "Nuance."

Listening to Brand and Obama, I had a realization.

People on the right often claim that people on the left are guilty of something called "moral relativism." Which, I believe, is defined as excusing/minimizing acts of cruelty, murder, and violence by looking at the "context" of those acts, and the "desperation" of the monsters perpetrating those acts, and judging that, in the scheme of things, they are either justified, or at least their culpability is mitigated -- "They had little choice." "These were the only weapons available to them."

But that's not quite right, I realized.

The left does indeed engage in moral relativism-- selectively.

For the enemies of America or Israel, or for the enemy of civilized, orderly society (say, the common street-murderer), the left does indeed engage in this analysis of moral relativism.

But what about for America itself, or Israel, or the family murdered by a "desperate" and poor lifelong criminal?

Does the left ever engage in the same moral relativistic thinking and say, of America, Israel, or a community outraged by murder, "Well, these people were scared. They felt as if they had no choice. Their anger can be excused and understood, and justified to some extent, because of the grievances they felt they had against their enemies."

No-- they do not. This moral relativism, the excusing and justifying of evil acts, is a one-way street only, only serving to apologize for people who kill Americans (or Westerners; the Israelis in this case are taken to be White Westerners).

This same "let's look at their grievances and how they felt justified" excuse is never, ever applied to America, Israel, or law-abiding folks outraged that a serious crime has occurred in their community.

In those cases, an absolutely sacrosanct and invariable ethic is applied -- and America, Israel, and law-abiding folks are found guilty of having violated it.

Obama, if he wishes to think himself "complex" and "cosmopolitan," may offer apologias for wicked acts committed by the enemies of America (or her allies) all he likes.

There is nothing, I don't think, inherently wrong about such thinking. (I believe here that many will sharply disagree with me.)

But how about extending the same "let's look at their grievances and feelings of outrage and powerlessness" excuses to our own country and own allies and own citizens once in a while too, huh?

They're not engaging in moral relativistic thinking, not really.

All they're doing is establishing a very friendly, very loose code of behavior for America's enemies, and a vindictively inviolable one to America itself.

War is "unfair" if one side is winning or has better weapons than the other. Apparently wars should be indecisive stalemates, with equal damage done to both entities.

29 >>The context he offers is this: Hamas is weaker, militarily, and is thus forced to do things which "we might perceive" as terrorist actions<<

By that measure, and to the converse, the opposing party who is stronger should also be able to use all means in its disposal to ensure it continues to exist.

Let me simplify this for Brand: equal and opposing force. Plus.

It isn't Israel who is chartered to destroy Hamas, It is Hamas who is chartered to destroy Israel. They've stated' time and again, they will not give up that objective.

In that regard, the Israelis have shown great restraint. Because the enemy has said its objective is to destroy them. By any means.

Yet , they hold back. They restrain...when possible. Even when Hamas is hiding missiles in schools or hiding themselves behind children. Oh yeah and kidnapping people or bodies like the ghouls they are.

Let me make this simple for Mr. Celebrity dumbshit. Most people would not show that type of restraint when threatened with an existential threat. It's really no all that complicated. Somebody wants to destroy you and you want to live? You destroy them first. With prejudice and fire.

And the reason for the moral relativism boils down to patronizing racism and (to a much smaller degree) classism.

The bad guys the left letsoff the hookare brown people.

They do not let scared white people off the hook any more, but they used to let poor whites and the Amish off the hook for any "bad deeds" they might commit (lawlessness, in the case of the Appalachian folks, and not sending their kids to school and other quaint behavior, in the case of Amish).

But anybody who should "know better" such as Christians, [white] Americans, etc. gets a special form of vitriol.

It's almost like they all fancy themselves as Lawrence of Arabia, "down" with the America haters. They all see themselves as the great white saviors, the idiots living among the tribes and showing them the way. They get a thrill out of their perceived "hanging" with / alignment withthe scary, dangerous folks and feel like if they wear that stupid black and white tablecloth scarf, that they are somehow part of the club.

I am related to people who think like this. They think they, as a class, need to save Americans from themselves because we are too stupid to run our own lives. Further, theyconstantly take the side of the America-haters because the little brown people can't possibly be expected to behave in a rational, civilized fashion. The little brown people'sbehavior must be excused (because, after all, they aren't as sophisticated as white people from New Jersey).
It's so patronizing it hurts.

The Left treats us like their ex-husband. Every action we take and every word we say is interpreted in the worst possible light.

Someone made the call to perform that "torture" or procedure or whatever you want to call it. That was the right call at the time, because the job of that person was to protect Americans. Not the Tali's. In their estimation it was worth the call. I agree. It was a judgment call and the right one.

65 The left is morally relativistic when it comes to their own behavior. "Who are you to judge?!"

They are culturally relativistic when it comes to other societies. "It's just their culture to rape women and mutilate their genitals. "

There are several issues with cultural relativism. First it is, as you recognized, typically used to excuse very specific behavior of an otherwise favorited group. Thus we end up excusing blatant misogyny in Islam while hyperventilating about "sexism" in Christianity. Were these liberals truly cultural relativists they'd be excusing the Catholic Church's lack of women priests with the same gusto with which they defend burkas.

That's an issue with application of the theory, but even more damning is the fact that if you make an argument for cultural relativism you necessarily undermine anyone trying to reform the culture. If all cultures are "good" but different anyone saying that the culture is bad and needs reform must be wrong, and this bad himself. Thus you have liberal feminists screaming about the oppression of women in one breath and denouncing Hirsi Ali in the next.

It's a stupid, juvenile moral system for stupid, juvenile people.

For once I'm going to pull up what I had previously commented, since for once in a blue moon it's actually on topic for the nood. To wit:

If waterboarding is torture, then the US military routinely "tortures" its aircrew and special operators when sending them through SERE training.

I, meanwhile, stick to my position that I've held from the beginning. That interrogating terrorists in any way, shape or form, with or without waterboarding, is a giant error.

They should instead be classified as combatants not in uniform under the Geneva conventions, and sent to drumhead courts-martial, after which they would be shot stone cold dead by military firing squads.

No icky torture here! And scrupulously on the up and up with regard to international law.

75 Obama, if he wishes to think himself "complex" and "cosmopolitan," may offer apologias for wicked acts committed by the enemies of America (or her allies) all he likes.

There is nothing, I don't think, inherently wrong about such thinking. (I believe here that many will sharply disagree with me.)

There is nothing inherently wrong about trying to understand the motivations of the enemy. It's important to do so in order to discover what is most important to the enemy.

113 The narrative is oppressor and oppressed, Ace. Once that frame is set and the players put on their team, then the moral calculus can be done. The oppressed can engage in behavior that would make a Hun queasy and that is justified because they are oppressed. The oppressor cannot even use words to defend himself because he is an oppressor and this defense hampers the oppressed thus adding even more to the charges of oppression.

Add in some luke-warm Marxism and barely understood Leninistic phrases about imperialism and colonialism and you have something that you can use to "understand" everything that goes on in the world.*

*Of course treating all of these people as being incapable of making moral decsions and reducing everything to a template cut purely from Western culture is a form of oppression in itself, bu the little Lefty darlings are too cretinous to figure that out.

I think we've reached a point where Step Two should be the focus of attention, AtC.

We -- and by "we" I mean conservatives -- have spent years and years listening to Great Pundits going on and on (and on and on and on....) about the "context" and "nuance" of what lefties say.

When a crime is committed, you can get lost in the details, wondering "why did he do that?" while the criminal continues on his merry felonious way. You can do the same thing with war. You can understand, you can parse every sentence, you can assign motivation. Yet none of that changes the basic act. And indeed, if you waste enough time on motive and don't stop/punish the act, you are, in a sense, an enabler.

This is what keeps Choom Boy going. No matter what he does, the Big Thinkers of the right will grind out endless anal-yses. So he keeps doing it.

Bloviators gotta bloviate. And one day, we will wish we had been more active in stopping the left's endless felonies.

Back in June of 2004, the Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger wrote with his usual perceptiveness about John Kerry and evil, Kerry then approaching that year's Democratic presidential nomination. 180 more,

In the face of this, what was Kerry doing? Over at Fox Charles Krauthammer captured the moment well, saying of Kerry that the Secretary of State "returns [from a trip to Paris where he met with representatives of the Hamas-friendly Qatar and Turkey] essentially as the lawyer for Hamas."

Now the Israeli media is furious with John Kerry. Earlier this week Politico pulled together a sampling of Israeli media comment about Kerry. Among other things the Israeli press is saying "Kerry's mistakes are embarrassing. ... Kerry just doesn't understand who's playing against whom in the Wild Mideast" (Times of Israel), that Kerry (and Obama) "did not understand the depth of the cynicism and cruelty of the factors that they are dealing with?" (Maariv), Kerry is like a "blind person" and should be fired because he is "pathetic and confused" (Maariv). There's more.

What all of this comment is saying, even if not in so many words, is that Israel is having to face evil -- this time in the form of Hamas -- and John Kerry is at work playing the game of moral relativity.

239 Well, to be fair, I believe the Left's excuse for its double standards would be that we (i.e., the oppressors) should "know better" and thus must be held to a higher moral standard.

The Left is big on the idea of leading by moral example -- Gandhi, MLK, that sort of thing. They're caught up in this idea that if we hold ourselves to these high moral standards, the heathens will respect us and eventually want to imitate us. And we'll all light candles and buy the world a Coke, etc., etc.

The trouble is that some people are just immune to peaceful suasion. The only way to stop them is to kill them or break their spirit. This has always been a blind spot for the Left. Gandhi famously misunderstood Hitler. A lot of folks on the Left simply can't believe other people could be so evil -- unless they're radical militia teabaggers, of course. Then no mercy must be shown.

I, too, think a national divorce will be the ultimate result of all this. This stuff cannot go on forever. At some point, the Leftist regime is going to ask people to do something that large numbers of people cannot in good conscience do. And large numbers of people will refuse and go to jail. The sight of thousands of Americans being herded off to jail because they offended some bureaucrat like Lois Lerner will be the match that lights the fuse.

This is something we can do right now at the state level in a number of states, since the GOP controls something like 25-30 right now. Change the curricula via state law, force the faculty to present an honest treatment of conservative/libertarian topics, take control of who is hired and who isn't out of the hands of the radicals, eliminate the radicalized departments, like the Women's Studies programs - these are things that we can do now.

We may have to light some fires under the hind quarters of GOPers at the state level, and we may have to replace the moderate squishes, but we can act on this now.

Back in 2012, when Mitt Romney's crack foreign policy team came up with the highly successful tag line that "Russia is our greatest geopolitical opponent," (and boy, was that successful with voters) I said that, no, sorry, bullshit, _China_ is.

A point I brought up again in the context of "New START". We shouldn't worry that much about Russian strategic arms. We should worry about the Chinese ones.

And I got roundly rubbished for saying that. Why, look at the Chinese nuclear arsenal! It's laughably small! How could they ever pose a threat?

Unfortunately, kinda like the Chinese blue-water navy, their strategic nuclear capability gets bigger every year, while ours gets smaller every year. They are steadily coming up the technological capability curve in all areas, while we stagnate.

So I posited earlier in the thread that the wake-up call might be nuclear.

Another one would be perhaps a "soft" societal breakdown.

Many people in the US don't remember, or failed to perceive at the time, the infamous "Winter Of Discontent" in the UK in 1978-79, which led to the rise of Margaret Thatcher in response.

Many long years of leftist rule (including by "Conservative" pols) had gotten the UK to where it had to be bailed out by the IMF in 1976, and things went downhill from there.

By the (very cold) Winter Of Discontent, the country was paralyzed by labor strikes. Regular electric blackouts and brownouts. Transport and communications operated only sporadically. Endemic unemployment. Factories on restricted schedules.

Little food in the stores, few goods in the shops. Huge piles of uncollected trash in the streets. Unburied dead in the morgues.

While the normal procedure is for civilians to be pressed into military service, during the Winter, the UK military were pressed into civilian services to provide a bare minimum of fire and medical response.

Finally, as a result of the Winter, the UK electorate had enough, and tilted right, and Thatcher was the result.

Unfortunately, she was never strong enough to pull up the very deep roots of the British left. She fixed things temporarily, no more than that.

Unfortunately, because they are so blinded by ideology and willfully ignorant of facts, history and empirical evidence, the result will be catastrophic. But again, it will NEVER be the fault of the ideology; only of outside forces and factors.

Especially in my age group, it is seen as the intelligent thing to do to claim that the whole situation is just too complicated to distill, and you can't blame the Palestinians for what they do because they are just so DESPERATE.

Desperate for fucking what? They could have anything they wanted if they would just stop firing rockets at Israel. They can't be THAT goddamned desperate. No one puts an ounce of real thinking into this position, they just know that it is en vogue to take said position, and it comes with the built in exit door of 'well it's just too complicated' when the position is challenged.

... /rant. Sorry, having people treat me like -I'm- the idiot is a bit of a sore spot for me.

If Gerald Ford had won in '76, Iran would not have fallen. Nor would we have had Zimbabwe, Afghanistan or the surrendering of the Panama Canal.

No. Obama is not a diabolical genius. He is a simple minded, dope smoking, brain-damaged, fuckwit that took advantage of Affirmative Action to get credentialed, and then conned gullible people into thinking he was smart by getting other people to write books for him.

Obama learned dirty politics in Chicago. There is nothing brilliant about dirty politics, it's the same ole same ole of threat and extortion. Oh, and he can talk a good game of jive.
Obama is a bull in a China Closet, and not Dr. GoldFinger. He is a clueless fool who has surrounded himself with clueless fools, and was furthermore put there by clueless fools.
The disasters he creates are not intentional or well planned. They are just the result of a clueless fuck having influence, like throwing a monkey wrench into an assembly of gears.

The monkey wrench can wreak terrible destruction without having a single thought in it's non-existent brain.

They want to get votes. They want to sound nice. They want to seem not racist and not judgmental while being sympathetic toward and understanding of the oppressed other. Where is the evidence that they're motivated by PLandU and not envy, greed, and frankly pathological thinking?

We need to stop giving them any benefit of the doubt and say their PLandU is propaganda to fool the stupid.

The thing is we can back it up with the results of what happens when they run things.

375 so weird

A spokesman from HHS confirmed to Breitbart Texas that as of July 7, five unaccompanied minors were released in Alaska. "Between January 1 and July 7, 2014, a total of five minors were discharged from the Unaccompanied Alien Children program to sponsors in Alaska," the spokesman said.

The trip from McAllen, Texas--where the current border crisis is occurring--to Anchorage, Alaska is a nine and a half hour flight. This is almost double the time it would take to fly the migrants back to their home countries in Central America; a flight from McAllen to El Salvador takes just over five hours, according to Google Maps.

The federal government's reasons for transporting unaccompanied minors all the way to Alaska are unclear.

You're only fooling yourself. For whatever reasons you cannot admit that he has succeeded by all he's done to the country.

I understand but until we admit that he and others like him are the enemy, we're no better than John McCain claiming we should have no fear of an Obama presidency.

I suppose you're afraid of being painted with the Koo koo brush or being called racist or a birther or some such but the fact remains that he stated clearly what he planned to do and he has accomplished most of what he said he would.

That is not indicative of a doofus or fool. It shows a malice aforethought and a well planned assault.

Sure he couldn't foresee that certain things would happen as they did and perhaps he was surprised by how much the MSM covered for him but all that has happened would not have happened without his underlying hatred and aim of destroying the power of the US to influence and thwart Islamic goals while throwing this country into chaos and confusion and much of what has happened would not be so dire to the continued existence of the US.

397 doug at #2 is exactly right. Projecting, it's what the morally reprehensible Left does. They think we are as horrible, as morally bankrupt, and as evil as they are.

And yet, the Presidencies of Reagan and both Bushes didn't have a thimbleful of the criminal actions and weaponization of federal agencies that have appeared under Sir Golfsalot's reign.

They should be very grateful we are NOT them, and they should stop pushing us for the excuse they think they want.

It will not end well for anyone, but it will be especially bad, as it always is, for the bullies who always count on their victim's better nature.

Obama, the Left, HAMAS, all part of the same movement -- selective moral relativism, all requiring their opponents to be better people than they are.
