The Only Appropriate Reaction to the Wisconsin Supreme Court's Decision on Act 10

ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

The voter ID decision is also a biggie, but here is the orgasm-inducing quote from the Milkwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

In upholding Gov. Scott Walker's union law limiting collective bargaining for most public employees, the state Supreme Court effectively ended major litigation over the measure.

It's over.
We won, they lost.

Considering the string of defeats Republicans have dealt to themselves and their base, the long slow slide towards bigger government, and the utter failure of any Republican to actually roll back the progressive agenda anywhere, that a Governor and Legislature did so, in a place like Wisconsin, is huge.

This should also put pressure on Republican legislatures and governors to do more. What is their excuse, when this was pulled off successfully?

Kudos to the conservatives who (at least for the moment) govern the Badger State, and to the voters who put them in there and rejected a recall. To the latter group though, a reminder that November is coming. Please don't screw it up.

31 "the utter failure of any Republican to actually roll back the progressive agenda anywhere"

I'm still furiously pissed over the Commiefornia GOP having told us that the steroid-inflated plastic Austrian android from Hollyweird was going to be _the_ fellow to restore conservative fortunes in the Golden State.

I said, "Wait, what? The guy who voluntarily married into the Kennedy family and who gets on famously well with Uncle Ted the Oldsmobile submarine captain, this is the guy who is going to be the standard-bearer for the right?"

They said, "Yeah, it'll be great! Star power!"

I didnt buy it and I voted for Tom McClintock. Don't regret that.

Der Groppenfuhrer got to Sacramento and immediately hired a staff packed full of career liberal Democrats. Pushed for a huge array of left-wing policy nonsense like carbon taxes, "hydrogen highways" and unconstitutional ammo purchase restrictions. Was completely ineffectual in confronting the state's militant unions.

Ah-nuld capped it all off with a redistricting plan that was supposed to be objective and balanced and get rid of the more ridiculous sorts of uncompetitive gerrymandered districts. Democrats gamed it ruthlessly and emerged with more seats than before, and a tax-hiking supermajority in the CA legislature.

So when people say that Scott Walker is drab and lacks charisma? Buddy, I have _seen_ what a total disaster a candidate with literal movie-star charisma can be. I'll settle for unflashy solid competence, thanks.

65 @48 (In CA 90% of the collected dues go to Dem campaigns. The same elsewhere I would imagine.)
--------------------

This is one thing that people in California can actually do something about. Californians passed a law not too long ago that allowed union members to opt out of having their dues spent on political stuff. iirc, any dues that would have been spent on political stuff need to be refunded. The only catch is that the union member needs to request that their dues are treated in this fashion. It's not a passive thing.

A few years back, a handful of the big unions in the state tried to use some creative accounting to justify political expenditures using dues from people who'd opted out. The resulting lawsuit made its way to the US Supreme Court, where the unions lost.

When I had my job at the grocery store we had to sit there where another employee told us why we should fill out the form authorizing the union to take extra dues specifically for political purposes.

She talked about how the union was great during the strike running ads bashing the grocers to get people on their side. (I guess that was 2 strikes ago, because the last strike the union didn't back the membership since had no bargaining power but the members were idiots.)

I asked if I wrote in a negative number if I'd get money back and she got mad.

Technically the law here is that mandatory dues can only cover collective bargaining costs. I say technically because I'm fairly certain they've found a way around that.

97 Pixy views anyone who uses copy and paste with deep
suspicion. To avoid her countermeasures, care must be taken to launder
any copied text through a text editor like Notepad. Ironically, that
goes doubly so if you are using copy and paste on text you found on this
very site.

In addition to all the other reasons for being unhappy about it, he brings up one little thing: it's hurricane season. You toss a 1000 people in the state and don't want to tell local officials about it?

What could go wrong?

Second, bad news for you, but Scott Walker is on record saying that he supports a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and for increasing legal immigration as well. And I hear he's thinking of getting a spray-on tan.

133 We need more stories like this. Let's keep winning governorships and state legislatures, and then using them to roll back whatever parts of the progtard agenda we can!

And if it takes several cycles to weed out enough GOPers who won't go along with our agenda, then let's do this as well.

Outstanding work, Wisconsin!

Posted by: Blor-Utar at July 31, 2014 07:04 PM (46bIl)

134 One of the greatest weaknesses of the left's schemes for America is the basically federalist structure of the government. States are practically autonomous in many ways, although the federal larder has made that less so by holding the Damocles sword of withholding funds over the heads of governors. Sherriffs are just about the ultimate authority in their regions, and states can tell the federal government to go to hell almost every single time.

The more states we can turn toward Walker and away from Bloomberg, the harder their task is. Our biggest fault on the right has been to try to fight the left on their battlefield of their choosing with their tools. We have our tools and should be using them. Fight local, fight smart.

136 "...pulled off successfully" indeed! It was a masterful stroke! Although it has been hard at times, the Governor has things well in hand and it is great to see him beating off his challengers. Obviously, in Wisconsin the public comes first when Republicans stand firm.

I have a doctor friend (i.e., self-employed) who says that if payroll withholding were ever done away with, and people actually got all their income in their greedy paws, and then had to write a quarterly check to the IRS, Black wage earners would quickly make Grover Norquist sound like Bernie Sanders and the Democratic party would go the way of the Whigs inside of two elections.

142 Yeah, this is why I'm pretty gung-ho on the possibility of a Scott Walker presidential candidacy. He's taken that blue state and pulled it to the right.

On the other hand, I've been mighty disappointed about a couple of other Wisconsin Republicans, Paul Ryan and Reince Priebus.

I really, really hope Walker is cut from a different cloth from those two weenies.

Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at August 01, 2014 01:16 AM (eWHFj)

143 Scott Walker is the only Republican politician I know who's both (1) seriously determined to kneecap the Democrats' taxpayer financed campaign fund from govt. employees, AND (2) a crafty enough politician to actually pull it off in a PURPLE state.

That's why I hope Gov. Walker runs for President. I (and many others) will gladly punch in my credit card # for Wallker's campaign to the max limit that McCain's campaign law allows on my 1st amendment rights.

There are other Republican politicians who smack down public employee unions, and good for them. But they're mostly from solidly Republican states, where winning the Republican primary is the big fight, and any moron labeled Republican on the ballot could beat the Democrat in the general election. Chris Christie is another Republican who's won serious fights with govt. employee unions, even in a pretty solidly BLUE state, but not as decisively as Walker, and we know about Christie's baggage.

To win a Presidential campaign, we need a nominee who knows how to win election in purple states, not just someone who knows how to win the Republican primary in a solidly red state. I really like Louisiana Gov. Jindal, but being able to win in a state like Louisiana doesn't show you've got what it takes to win in America as a whole.
