My son did it for about six years. He built his own battle gear and attended Ragnarok once. Getting a full time job and then married put LARPing on his back burner, however.

Yup. There was not "lighting bolt!!1!" crap or rolling dice to determine winners or casting spells. the mechanics can be simplified by upping the roll playing (i.e. instead of rolling a die or wasting 5 minutes, you set up some type of elaborate ritual).
Heck, I even survived a Cthulhu LARP once...

Right there are different levels of "LARP" and differing amounts of story content involved...
some are actual RPGs with live action...
some are just free for alls....
There was a theatrical fencing and weaponcraft school up in Shreveport that were fuel still 89 cents a gallon I'd have been thrilled to go to when we lived at Polk...
the guy was not some dork just swinging he was an artist like peak Fairbanks or Flynn....
and a lot of folk well aren't....
there was a "Living Force" Star Wars RPG LARP going on for years IIRC

The "lightning bolt" school looks like D&Ders in costume. The Ragnarok attendees create costumes and padded battle gear and thump on one another using a set of rules as to what constitutes a hit, a wound, etc.
But, what do I know - it's not my "thing"...
