Overnight Open Thread (26 Jul 2014)

My apologies for being late but my internet decided to take a break for a few hours. I just got it back.

How about a little doom to kick off the ONT. 15 reasons why the party on Wall St. is about to end in tears.

Military Enlistment

This map of enlistment rates by state is not surprising.

When Animals Go Bad

Well, you can add giant anteaters to your list of animals to watch out for. They killed two hunters in Brazil.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead season 5 trailer was unveiled yesterday at San Diego Comic Con. I was a bit surprised at how much it reveals so don't watch it if you want to remain spoiler free.

Star Wars

America's favorite Star Wars movies and characters. These results are about right although I would rate Revenge Of The Sith higher than Phantom Of The Menace. One thing though. How the hell does Jar Jar Binks get a 29% favorable rating?

Bonus: Here's the latest trailer for the animated series Star Wars: Rebels.

Animated Weather Map Of Earth

This is a pretty cool website by Cameron Beccario that has wind, temp, and other overlays. They've now added an overlay that is called the Misery Index which is based on perceived temperature. I'm surprised the blue state big cities aren't glowing red in misery based on their AGW beliefs.

Suicide Bomber Pro-tips

Oh man. It might be wise to remove a suicide vest from a dead terrorist prior to parading him down the street. Suicide bomber kills his own mourners.
Update: A commenter has pointed out that this was a mortar/rocket hit in Syria. Bummer, I liked the idea of a jihadi work accident better.

Remember the underwear bomber? It would seem that because he wore the same pair of underwear for two weeks, it degraded the device and prevented the successful takedown of the flight he was on back on Christmas Day 2009.

Rotisserie Chicken

Ever notice that buying an already cooked rotisserie chicken is usually cheaper than buying an uncooked one at the supermarket? Here's why.

Cat Video

Kitten practicing its Kung Fu moves.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by anatomy of songs:

30 I agree, Star Wars ranking (so far) goes
V
IV
VI
III
I
II
And there's a pretty big gap between VI and III. Honestly, the storyline in the Knights of the Old Republic game was better than most of the movies. Star Wars' biggest flaw was its creator's inability to tell a story. Great concepts, great setting, now walk away George.

59 Fenelon: typical BS. Asshole atheists beating up on people for professing that they love their Christian faith.

Nothing to quote, but I think I did a halfway decent job of beating the asshole down. Of course I called him a Stalinist, which is IMHO an effective putdown (even though I use it a lot, maybe way too much) because it's an accurate description of these freaks.

Then when said asshole, quite predictably, gave me a hard time about my "unChristian response," I told him I could care less and he couldn't know less about it if he tried.

On the net, especially at FB, I don't care how right or left you are, or how devout or atheist you are. I'm REALLY big on, I treat you with EXACTLY as much respect as you treat me and others. The end.

62 Remember Kristen Bell, that pretty-but-vapid actress who was in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and probably some other garbage? She recently starred in a skit for (not)Funny or Die, showing Mary Poppins leaving because she's only paid the US Federal minimum wage. Let's forget for a moment that this skit doesn't even make sense in context because Mary Poppins' character does her duties in London:

http://tinyurl.com/o3eks4d

I bring it up now because Reason TV's rebuttal by Remi is awesome and shows some of the hypocrisy of both Bell and (not) Funny or Die.

http://tinyurl.com/m97n8do

I'd wager that Bell doesn't pay some of her staffers a "living wage" and that Bell uses all kinds of tax dodges to decrease her tax burden.

Luke heads the rebuilt Jedi, with help from spirit Obi-wan, Anakin, and that other guy.

Han and Leia get married and have twins, a boy and a girl(it's in her genes). The boy becomes Luke's apprentice.

The force is strong with Leia and her children(it's in her genes).

Jar-Jar dies a horrible death.

Spirit Palpatine seduces Leia to the Dark Side, promising she can bring order to the galaxy. To seal the deal she kills Han. Her daughter, miffed that she isn't allowed to be a Jedi because she's a girl, becomes Leia's apprentice.

Luke and Leia battle, Leia's children battle, spirit guys battle.

Profit? Weren't they selling those chickens at a lower cost after using employees to cook them? Yes they were, but they also know that a person that buys those chickens will also buy potato salad/cole slaw/macaroni salad/macncheese and other items from their deli section.

That is what capitalism is.

108 andycanuck, good to hear. :-)

Speaking of legs, I know I have the pervy rep here of bringing up tights or leotards or something of that nature every night here. So I thought people would enjoy this anti-TSA story I actually found at another blog.

I have no idea who actually wrote this, but whoever she is, she's a hero IMHO.

""I was flying out of Dallas yesterday headed for San Francisco. Going through the security check, my shoes in the box on the conveyor, passing through the metal detector no beeps. I fly ALOT so I know not to have anything on me! I was wearing a light cotton summer dress, suntan Sheer Energy, and a non-underwire bra. Nothing to set anything off! So anyway, I pass through, no beeps, no nothing, and this TSA dude says, "Ma'am please step this way." I did, and he bent down, picked up my foot, then put his gross fingers between my big toe and snapped my pantyhose out and back!! He stands up, looks at me, I'm shaking, and says, "Just as I suspected, pantyhose." I said, "EXCUSE ME YOU F$#*%#G FREAK?" and I slapped him! I did! Really! Well then I got to meet his supervisor and about ten other jerks who detained me for 'assaulting a security officer.' I assaulted him? He had no probable cause to even speak to me, let alone fondle my underwear! They said that they have a right to inspect passengers clothing. I said, "No alarm went off, and pantyhose are NOT suspicious! I think your guy has a foot fetish and was copping a feel!" Well then it turned into a sexual advance and they backed RIGHT down... so.. After making sure my strappy little heels weren't bombs, they let me go, almost missing my flight. I was a wreck.

So I called my company travel department, who got in touch with our legal department, who got in touch with the Dallas TSA. I work for a VERY large company... they make F-series pickup trucks if that helps lol. just don't want to mention them by name because google can be a friend or an enemy. Long story short, the TSA has been very apologetic, which means nothing to me. I told my company to go ahead and pursue it as far as they wish. Maybe that jerk will be back flipping burgers soon!""

Apparently a company I had worked at for 2 years, who had a 20 percent RIF in one bloody day, me included, got sued for unpaid OT via the DOL. This happened 3 years ago. Apparently the settlement included all past employees and they were ordered to settle individually with each employee, plus pay attorney's fees. Net result...a check in my mail box for $9,200.00 today.

Question 1 is really a combination of: (a) is the route from Greensboro through Richmond to DC scenic enough that I'd want to spend five hours on it? (b) is the convenience of having a car in DC worth the pain in the neck of getting it there and quartering it? (c) is there something that could be reasonably expected to be on the way worth seeing? Only after it looks like a decent idea do you get to the sad fact that I'll spend a night away from my fiancee when she flies back.

When you say it's not so bad to get a hotel by Reagan, is it bad to get a hotel near Dulles? When you say that you can take the Metro in from the Reagan area, is Dulles off the Metro? I've got the AAA tourbook and will have to figure this stuff out, but I trust the "gut feel" of people who know the area to give me a sense of orientation.

National Building Museum.....ok, that's odd enough that I'll have to get it in there......

So everybody remembers the Philadelphia doctor who shot a patient who had just killed his assistant and the doctor wasn't supposed to have a gun?

It sounds like he may be going back to work:

http://tinyurl.com/npcbq36

But get this -- the District Attorney says the only motivation he can think of for the shooter was:

"There's evidence that he took offense to the issue that there were signs posted at Mercy Fitzgerald Health System indicating that it was a gun-free zone."

Of course the gunman has a criminal history dating back to the 90's including bank robbery, which bans him from possessing a firearm. And he was nuts. But the DA says:

"That's the only motive we have been able to determine at this point in time . . . he was upset about that policy."

Say a prayer the doctor goes back to work.

I always preferred Dulles, but it probably depends on pricing and flight schedules for your preferred airline(s).

In
DC, the attractions that my wife and I always appreciated the most are
the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the American History
Museum, the Freer Gallery and the Library of Congress. The National
Aquarium in Baltimore is also pretty neat, although it's a bit of a
drive.

However, if you feel up to driving into DC on a daily basis, your options can vary, although Dulles is so far away from the city it's not practical in any case. You may be able to get a decent rate in the Crystal City area (close to Reagan) on a hotel and then access to most everything there is much more leisurely by Metro.

I think all of the recommendations are part of the Smithsonian complex (19 Museums total). Don't forget the National Cathedral and the US Botanic Gardens (which I did when composing my original response).

One of the things about the sixties that I didn't appreciate while living through them is how much "message" was being pushed -- in what, today, would be laughably simplistic ways. The entire "folk" genre, for instance, was supposed to be "honest music from honest people in faraway places" -- but was likely churned out in such rural enclaves as Stanford University (The Kingston Trio) or Berkeley (Creedence Clearwater Revival).

I'm still concerned about Margaret Pole. Sure you could be rich back then but they could take away everything you owned on a whim. Nothing was really yours. Poor Margaret:

Her grandpa was hacked to death.
Her mother died of witchcraft, poison, child birth fever.
Her father was drowned in a barrel of wine.
Her uncle stripped her of her right of succession and took all her shit.
Either he or Henry 7 stashed her in a castle for years.
Her brother was killed
Her son and grandson were killed.

Posted by: model_1066 at July 26, 2014 11:34 PM (WBDpw)

In a sense it could be, but this to me is what the beauty of capitalism is.

Hypothetical

Store buys 100 chickens at $2.00 each.
Store needs to sell 70 chickens at $4.00 each to break even (includes overhead)
Store has 80 chickens sold meaning that they generated a profit of $40 on the sales.
Without the rotisserie chicken, the store would have to throw out 20 chickens, but since they sell let's say 10 of those chickens at $3.25, the store generated additional profit of $32.50 on the chicken that they would have thrown away.

The stores aren't selling it below their cost, they are selling the chicken below what they sell it for.

To me, a loss leader would be what Sheetz gasoline stations do, they sell their gasoline below cost to generate traffic on their property. Once customers are on their property, they sell them drinks, food, and tobacco products. All of which have much higher profit margins than gasoline.

Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper at July 27, 2014 12:12 AM (+Fae7)

266 BTW, re Zuckerberg: gotta love the guy. He still sounds like he's 14 years old. I heard the Facebook quarterly earnings call that took place earlier this week.

And, brass tacks time: he and the "masters" of FB are in their business to target advertising to you. That's the entire name of the game for them. The more they can sell to you, the richer they get. The end.

I still use FB, and being able to communicate with people there is great, but I have *no* illusions it's ultimately for anything other than trying to sell me stuff.

Malkovich is in Black Sails. It's been quite entertaining, long as you ignore all of the plot holes, historic errors and technical and nautical impossibilities.

It's the classic "suspend disbelief" series, and whence dispensed with, is quite enjoyable in and of itself. The sets, actors, most of the acting and twists to what plot there is, are reasonable screen candy.

Actors chewing up the scenery. Last Ship, but under sail, sans plague.

It doesn't have to be GOOD, it only has to be FUN. It is, that.

That's what every great songwriter is trying for, and it's a very elusive objective. One of these days, I may try to get back to writing, but I never had the talent for it that so many others had. Flip side of that is that I could usually sing it better than the writers. Most songwriters can't sing their way out of wet paper sack. It's an interesting dichotomy.

One thing that always spikes my blood pressure is, and I quote from the article, the media saying: "At least 1,050 Gazans - mostly civilians - have been killed, and 42 Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israelhave died."

Gazans elected Hamas, a terrorist organization to rule the Gaza strip. Hamas is disinclined to wear uniforms or bear unit insignia. That does not make them "civilians". So far as I am concerned, once they elected Hamas as their representative, there are zero, none, naught, no noncombatants in Gaza. So far as I care, the IDF can kill every tenth inhabitant and let 'em vote again -- and keep doing so as long as "Hamas" is the duly elected government of Gaza.

Every movie theater uses the same model. For the first week of an opening, the movie makes them zero profit, they earn everything on concessions. Each week the movie lasts, they get a bigger slice of the profit and the studios get less. Thus, the theaters love films that last a long time and the studios don't; every screen that shows one of their movies in a long run means less and less profit for them and no chance for another film to be on that screen.

Negotiating with Hamas and any of the terror organizations is a pointless charade.

Best Israel bites the bullet and crushes Hamas totally, then work their way through the rest of the evil.

303 I want to brag a bit. Today, while 20 miles from home, my beater of a Subaru started sputtering and flashing the "check engine" light at me. I was pissed. I figured I would break down on the road, again, and have to get a tow and buy yet another new engine.
As it was still running, I figured to drive it home so I could get it to my local shop if at all possible and to take main roads instead of back roads in case I needed to get it towed. Stressing and sweating bullets I drove towards home.
Then I realized, I've paid off all my debts. I have some savings just for this emergency. I carry a cellphone and I have some towing insurance. In fact, if the car suddenly catches on fire and burns to the ground the main concern I will have is choosing the color of the next beater I buy.

Moral of the story: the combination of no debt and some savings is one of the greatest stress relievers ever found.

314 Notes on travel to the Imperial Capitol:

(a) At the wrong time of year it can be utterly miserable. D.C. gets soak-your-shirt heavy humid heat, and dopey slow-moving bovine tourist crowds, and at its worst has both at once. Oh joy.

(b) Reagan Airport for the win. But, it's tiny compared to Dulles. Many fewer connecting flights, far higher fares. And, you may not necessarily want to be in and out of Reagan during bad weather. Back when it was National, a horrible crash occurred due to icing. Reagan himself ended up invoking one of the civilian volunteer rescuers in a State of the Union speech.

(c) Dulles has reasonable fares and good connections, but it's out there a ways. And sprawl has filled in what was once a low-density corridor between Dulles and the city center. So the odds of getting stuck in traffic are high. Missed flights, et al. And a costly destination to which to take a taxi.

(d) Parking is a total nightmare everywhere in D.C. The meter maids look specifically for nonlocal plates and will write you a ticket ahead of the actual meter expiration if they think they can get away with it, and they usually do.

(e) The Metro is run the way that a unionized public mass transit system in a Democratic big city normally runs, that is, with aggressive arrogant incompetence.

(f) Crystal City is a pretty close approximation to what I imagine my personal version of Hell to look like. Utterly soulless.

(g) The Smithsonian and the Museum of Natural History have turned into utter carnivals of obsequious political correctness. Alternately boring and infuriating.

(h) The National Air and Space Museum (under the Smithsonian heading) is great, but small. (The Apollo 11 CM does not take up much room. It's there.) You need to get out to their external annex at Dulles for a lot of the larger aircraft. Also, slow to update displays. I remember having been there where they had a side gallery of the amazing new American jet airliner, the Lockheed L-1011. In an era decades later when the last of those jets were being withdrawn from airline service.

(i) The NASM have a remote restoration annex out in Maryland that's amazing, but it's not really a museum per se. Lots of wild aerospace stuff, but it's not curated or displayed with signs or audio tracks. If you have a good volunteer docent for the tour, that makes up for it all, but it can be a crapshoot whether or not this happens.

(j) D.C. food is not all that. If you're someone who figures the quality of your meal based on the size of the number at the bottom of the credit card receipt, you'll love the place. Otherwise, it's a bust. Pretentious, costly, indifferently prepared.

(k) The sidewalks roll up earlier than other major North American tourist cities. I got stuck eating at a Roy Rogers (kill me now, aim directly for the center of the forehead, don't hesitate) due to miscalculating on this.

(l) The National Gallery is worth the time, but the aforementioned bovine crowds of tourists on package tours can utterly ruin the experience if your timing is off.

Agreed.

The Palis cannot even hide behind the "Fatah is our political wing
and Hamas is a military wing; the two don't cross, promise!" guise
anymore because the two formally merged not two months ago.

And of course SoS Horseface tried to get the Israelis to agree to a
ceasefire with all of Hamas' demands (most notably, IIRC, that the IDF
doesn't destroy Hamas' extensive tunnel network).

And of course, she received at lease 11 whacks.
What a life!

332 "Today, while 20 miles from home, my beater of a Subaru started sputtering and flashing the 'check engine' light at me. I was pissed."

Scary stuff when it happens. But, 90% of check-engine lights are due to trivial and/or cheap things like loose gas caps or failed oxygen sensors.

I typically advise friends/family before long road trips to find a new O2 sensor cheaply on ebay, have it installed, and keep the working original as backup in the spare tire well, in case the car claps out in the wrong end of Possum County.

"Then I realized, I've paid off all my debts. I have some savings just for this emergency. I carry a cellphone and I have some towing insurance. In fact, if the car suddenly catches on fire and burns to the ground the main concern I will have is choosing the color of the next beater I buy."

THAT is even better advice.

Pay the tiny extra increment for unlimited range towing. Don't ask how I came to learn that hard lesson.

(Typically they'll haul you 50 miles on a basic towing insurance package. A _whole lot_ of America is a _whole lot farther_ than 50 miles from even so much as a gas station, much less a competent garage. Especially true of something like a Subaru. There are places in the USA where you might as well be driving a Lamborghini in terms of your ability to get the car worked on.)

132 Allow me to share a great surprise in what has been a generally shitty few months. Went through the weeks mail today, and aside from the usual bills came a great surprise. Daughter is off to college in less than 2 weeks, this will g3t her a newer car, and some spending money that her Mom won't give her.

It turns out the the past 2 DOL Secretaries "decided" that exemptions no longer applied to certain classes of employees who, during all prior recording history, the exemptions had applied. No law change, no notice, no admission at all that there had been a change. You can take US 29 up or back and stop in Charlottesville. Monticello is worth a visit, and the old UVA campus is gorgeous if you can find it. (I'd be interested to know whether you wind up, as I have twice, at the married student housing behind the football stadium.)

If you take I85-I95, the Jefferson hotel in Richmond is a classic grand dame with a good restaurant for lunch or dinner. Shoko and Shoko Bottom, to your right just after crossing the river going north, has lots of trendier restaurants.

Basically, though, 85-95 is a nightmare start to finish.

You couldn't pay me to go to DC again, but a trip over to Annapolis for sight-seeing and dinner down at the harbor is a lovely evening. Crab dip, crab cakes, crab cocktail, soft-shell crab, yum. Whenever I see a conservative make the switch over, they tend to become very militant and go as far left as possible, and vice versa with a liberal that goes conservative.

Well, Steve, I used to live in DC myself, and I'm not a shitheel. Actually, I don't think tourists have to worry about running into the shitheels in DC. You're not going to bump into Harry Reid or Pelosi when you're walking around Arlington. I'm aware of them because I lived there and so was conscious of being surrounded by liberal bureaucrats and slimy pols.

The hardest part about visiting DC is that if you do it in the summer when there's 100 percent humidity, you'll get mighty hot and sweaty dragging yourself around the Mall to see the sights. The best months to visit are May and October, but since most people have off in the summer, you see lots of crowds sweating their asses off, while the people who live there are sitting in AC buildings trying to get out of town to go to the WVA mountains or Delaware/Maryland beaches.

Fair enough. I've been lucky, I've seen the world. I always tell people who think they can't afford to travel, don't buy useless shit, go somewhere instead. And especially with kids. Don't buy them 100 toys they'll play with for a day or two and then never see again.

Take them places, buy them experiences that last a lifetime.

City, country, beach, mountain...whatever. Just go somewhere.

401 "There's no place in the world like NYC. London, Paris, Tokyo... not even close. Don't not go to experience it, because of how its residents vote."

All of my best experiences as a tourist have been in smaller regional cities where tourism is not a primary industry. It's possible to have a more honest and unfiltered and authentic look at things that way.

Really, I've been to all these places thus described.

NYC? America's largest concentration of pushy assholes. I can get that at home (due in increasing part to New Yorkers moving here for professional reasons). Socialist mayor. Rapidly reverting to the unpleasant earlier era of _The Warriors_ and _Taxi Driver_.

London? Loved it once. Now it's become Londonistan, home to poor Pakistanis and rich Russians, neither of whom I am fond of. As John Cleese says, it is no longer an English city.

Paris? "Gaza on the Seine", as a recent piece at _Foreign Policy_ put it. A glossy core of imagined "La France profonde" wrapped in gray, high-rise, brutalist concrete, depressing, littered, graffitied non-French immigrant banlieux.

Tokyo? World's flashiest mausoleum for a demographically doomed culture. Adult diapers now outsell baby diapers in Japan. World's steepest age pyramid. The future belongs to those who show up. The Japanese failed to do so.

Shit, I'm from San Francisco, and I tell people all the time who talk about coming here to visit: SF used to make fun of its sister city across the bay, Oakland, saying "there's no there there."

There's no there there in SF today. Spectacular geography, but you can get that elsewhere, cheaper. The culture is shallow and the architecture is faded and the food is a costly racket.

Me-n-Ed's pizza is something I grew up with in SoCal -- and they're a chain with 60 restaurants! (The one I remember was across the street from a mall that had "The White....." something and, IIRC, was in the San Fernando Valley.) I'm fortunate that there's one in Fremont, CA, not too far from me.

I've looked at their website. Outside of Lakewood, the nearest Me-N-Eds is in your neck of the woods, easily at least 300 miles away.

In Hollyweird, this is professionally mandatory.

"Hearing that made me not want to visit him, no matter how appealing the SoCal climate is in January."

Actually, there have been spells of what are by SoCal standards extreme cold weather, to include light drifts of snow on the beaches of Malibu, during the last few winters.

Do not expect this to have changed the thinking of any of the locals, including ManBearPig himself, regarding the "planetary emergency" of global warming.

"We exchange Christmas cards now. That's it."

It baffles me that one of the least Christian, and in fact consistently anti-Christian, cultural blocs in America still adhere so strongly to the Christmas-card tradition.

But, in a sense, a lot of what goes on in the modern USA with Christmas cards is self-promotion, and Hollyweird is about nothing more than it is about constant obsessive ridiculous self-promotion via every available avenue, whether or not it's a logically consistent thing to do so.

He's an interesting fellow - a married Anglican priest who is also a gun safety instructor. A speech he gave in Chicago arguing for concealed carry is on YouTube. I've never known another clergyman with a "Who Is John Galt?" bumper sticker on his car.

He has been transferred to Davenport, Iowa and was singing the praises of Davenport - pretty little city on the Mississippi so much freer and cheaper than northern Illinois...he actually made me want to visit and I have never before in my life thought, "Gee, I'd like to see Iowa!"

But there are all sorts of unsung jewels in flyover country - places that never get any attention from the media.

429 CQD, I don't know La Bella's but they sound awesome. The 1950s were apparently great years for pizza. 436 431 Bob Belcher, no worries. One of *my* all-time favorite comedy flicks is Penny Marshall's "Jumping Jack Flash" from 1986. Star: Whoopi Goldberg.

437 logprof: JJF *did* bomb. I saw it on a double-bill at the Cerritos UA 4 (icky place, no longer there) with "Stand By Me." I expected to love SBM, hate JJF. But I ended up exactly the opposite.

Surprisigly enough, and despite the presence of several stupid anti-Reagan jokes early on, JJF actually is a patriotic film. It's basically a parody of the Bond flicks.

Anybody who wants to come to my hometown, I'll take ya to the below
place for pizza. It's been open for 50 years and practically legendary
at this stage.

There
is a very similar place in Chula Vista (south of San Diego) called La
Bella's. They opened in 1956, and are still going strong.

Closer
to home (well, for you, anyway) have you ever been to the Dal Rae in
Pico Rivera? A bit north from your location, but well worth the trip. No
pizza, but also legendary.

Posted by: CQD at July 27, 2014 01:41 AM (WbsS3)

For strange pizza, there was also Chi-chi's -- http://tinyurl.com/kjufzem -- with a whompin' FIVE locations. The one I was most familiar with sliced their pizza in a particular style -- there was one diameter to the pie, then about six perpendiculars to that diameter. This meant that the pizza was pulled off the pie onto plates in strips. I have since visited another Chi-chi's and they don't do that. Their deal was almost a parody of NY style -- sweet cheese in a pool of grease.

439 Oh, forgot to mention: and in Jumping Jack Flash, the bad guys are actual Soviet-supporting Communists.

If you ever get a chance to look at it on Netflix or something, give it a look. Just ignore the Reagan jokes at the *very beginning* of the film (thankfully they're easy to get out of the way that way), and you'll be surprised IMHO.

When I went to school at the University of Casual Sun Bathing, there was "Skip's Perry's pizza" in Isla Vista, which served thick-crust rectangular pies and slices -- I later found there was another one in the Sherman Oaks Galleria. Chi-chi's had round pies, thin crust, but with the weird strip slices.

448 Re: San Diego.

One of America's most pleasant year-round climates, to be sure. Ceteris paribus, I would live there just for weather. But, there are problems in other ways.

I know many people who were homeported there as active duty Navy and who still to this day refer to the place unfondly as "Dago", and are in no hurry to go back.

Plenty of rip-off joints of all sorts.

The beaches are spectacular, but the water is shared with unsanitary Tijuana immediately to the south, which often pumps raw sewage into the sea when their rickety sanitary sewer processing fails. Swim or surf at your own risk.

The airport is small and inefficiently laid out. On the rare occasions that there is genuinely inclement weather, this can be a real problem.

The food is not as accomplished as that of L.A., and I say this as someone who has viscerally hated L.A. for decades.

Although cthulhu did strongly recommend the food at Stone, I haven't been there and hence cannot confirm or deny. But Stone's beer is damned good.

Things are scarier today. "Pink Slime" (AKA Lean Finely-Textured Beef "LFTB") wasn't legal in human food until 2001. The expose in 2012, which resulted in plant closure and general revulsion, put a dent in the market.....but 2014 will be a new high in production/consumption since it's dropped off the radar.

I should note that the stuff scares the crap out of me because the physical removal methods appear likely to pick up vCJD (if present) and the chemical sterilization methods appear unlikely to remove it (or any other prion disease).

SD seems to be evolving a regional style of beer that is quite scrumptious -- as evidenced by Stone, Coronado Brewing Company, and Ballast Point. There are a lot of brews that you could blind test and know that they probably had to come from one of those three.....but not be sure which one.

Karl Strauss is a bit of an outlier in that only 1/2 of their beers seem to be "regional".

459 Whenever I see a conservative make the switch over, they tend to become very militant and go as far left as possible, and vice versa with a liberal that goes conservative.

As someone once told me, former drinkers and smokers are the most anti drinking and smoking people there are.

Then how does one explain the anti-gun tyrants? I really have a hard time believing they were ever pro-gun and flipped. Yet they are rabid in their opposition to the rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment, so rabid they want to destroy the 2nd Amendment (as well as destroy those who support it).

467 A team of U.S. government agents is sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East."
-------

The first ten minutes of the movie is an intense and graphic terrorist attack on an American oil workers residential compound in Saudi Arabia. Men, women, and children being shot, a suicide bomber in a crowd, and then it's capped off by a truck bomb that kills most of the first responders.

And the director was shocked when, in test screenings, the audience cheered at the end when the FBI agents go Rambo on the terrorists. Um, what the hell did you expect?

Also made the sauce this morning (fresh orange juice/orange zest/hois-sin sauce, with other stuff like soy, sesame oil, garlic-chili sauce, etc.).
