Overnight Open Thread (7-23-2014)

First a little mood music...

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz Gehort und Gesehen in Germany

30 minutes of cool jazz awesomeness from their 1960 tour.

Quote of the Day I

Nor do you ever have to lie in bed and watch some mawkish film about Nelson Mandela or one made by Michael Moore. (They don't think you're demented because you'd rather watch Die Hard.) And right-wing women never think that leaving the toilet seat up is a passive-aggressive act of patriarchy.

-- Cosmo Landesman in The Lust That Dare Not Speak Its Name

Quote of the Day II - Cause Racists Gotta Racify

For the record, all the "villains" on Thomas and Friends are the dirty diesel engines. I'd like to think there was a good environmental message in there, but when the good engines pump out white smoke and the bad engines pump out black smoke - and they are all pumping out smoke - it's not hard to make the leap into race territory.

-- Tracy Van Slyke of the Guardian who's unclear on the difference between steam and smoke among many, many other things.

The 'Lone Soldiers' of the IDF

Before this war, I'd never head the phrase "lone soldier," although the concept is not new to me. A lone soldier is a person who does not live in Israel, but who travels to Israel to volunteer in her military as she fights for survival. Indeed, I knew an American who, in 1973, traveled to Israel and ended up being in one of the first tanks in the Golan. Nice guy and a very decent human being.

Currently almost 2,000 lone soldiers are serving in the IDF.

The fact that they are not Israelis has not kept these lone soldiers out of the fight. The grandson of Rite Aid's founder was wounded, although thankfully this brave young man, who walked away from extraordinary riches into great danger, will recover. Sadly, neither Los Angeles native Max Steinberg, 24, and Texan Sean Carmeli, 21, will ever return home.

To die far away from home is a terrible thing, especially for the family and other loved ones left behind. The Israelis, fully cognizant of this tragedy, as well as grateful for the gift of people who donate their bravery, skills, energy, and heart to Israel, have hastened to repay the favor that Steinberg and Carmeli did for them:

With no family members nearby, there were concerns that the lone soldiers' funerals wouldn't be well attended, according to the Times of Israel. But 20,000 Israelis came to Carmeli's funeral on Monday, and 30,000 attended Steinberg's funeral Wednesday. Breitbart notes that the large attendance is especially remarkable considering that the constant threat of rocket attacks on Israel makes traveling and gathering in large crowds very risky.
There is something about dying with honor that is just incredibly heart-wrenching. I'm leaking tears all over my keyboard here.

Meanwhile the self-loathing Slate editor, Allison Benedikt, thinks Max Steinberg was just a patsy of Zionist propaganda.

The TSA Wants More of Your Money

Despite having caught a grand total of 0 terrorists in over a decade of existence.

A security fee that the government charges airline passengers more than doubled on Monday, from $2.50 to $5.60.

Lawmakers last year approved an increase in the fee, which is tacked onto the cost of airplane tickets, as part of a budget agreement.

Additionally, passengers will be charged twice if they have a layover for a connecting flight..

So now pretty much every flight will cost us $20 more for the same old existing security theater.

Every time I see that self-loathing Jew formulation, I am reminded of how conservative Blacks are smeared as Uncle Toms. I don't agree with the politics of Benedikt and her allies, but are they not allowed to have an honest differing opinion?

158 I don't get why it is that Jews are not allowed to disagree with the politics of Israel without being put down as self-loathing.

I'll try an answer to this one -

Much depends on what Israel's government is actually trying to do. If Israel's government is exempting religious students from armed service because of some deal cooked up with Shas - then yes, it's fine to debate the merits of that decision.

If a foreign terrorist force is shutting down commerce and visitation with rockets - I would say that whatever Israel does to destroy that force goes beyond politics. It is a matter of life and death to Israelis.

As for Judaism: yes, I concede, there do exist messianists and Ashkenazi nationalists who believe that the Israeli state is a neo-samaritanism and not a true expression of Judaism. I do give these voices a hearing where I hear them. (Katzenelson's book is insightful on Ashkenazi nationalism; the nationalist-but-nonzionist blogger JewAmongYou has translated it.)

HOWEVER.

Neither is the case for the professed Jews who are whining about Israel's actions here. These people are worshippers of the International Consensus; they are progressives, not believers in the Name, and - unlike the nonzionist nationalists - have no real interest in Jewish survival even *outside* South Syria. Otherwise we'd be hearing a lot more about, oh, Jewish practices at home from them and a lot less about what some other Jews are doing way over there.

This all may be tl;dr and rambling. So, sorry.

It's my thought that when people spend their efforts in one direction, that's the direction they care about. I happen to care about the survival of Israel as a Zionist project; I have various reasons for that, which I won't get into, but you'll notice that's one of the things I spend effort in posting about. I don't spend a lot of time complaining that maybe the IDF should have bombed this particular rocket-factory with a little more care and stuffed teddy bears.

I don't care what his & her apologists say, one does not give up a professional license for any reason except for getting in trouble with the licensing entity. I know guys who left the law profession but just put their licences on "inactive" which meant that they could become "active" again by taking their continuing education and any other classes as needed. Every one told me that they had put too much into it to just give it up.

My theory, Mooch got caught dipping into her firm's escrow account, and instead of having her go through a public disgrace, they got her the job at the hospital with a salary that could be used to repay that money taken.

195 No just some. Larson and Bubba both have gotten some decent media hype the last few years. That hype usually includes stories about how they got their start in racing. Both of them come from middle class families and had Dads who were into racing, but weren't a prominent racing family or anything like that.

Several of the other top young guys are from Nascar royalty. Chase Elliot is up there with Larson as a young stud with huge potential. But his dad is Bill Elliott, former champion, so there's not much mystery how Chase got his start or how he was able to attract sponsors and funding.

Larson had little money, he just showed so much raw talent at such a young age that the big $ in racing fought over him.

I'm closer to agreeing with you there.

Adam Carolla was raised in a household built with government cheese. I would say that without a doubt that the experience had a great deal to do with the shaping of his views. Many children rebel against the values of their parents and it affects their outlook for the rest of their lives.

Not being Jewish myself, and not having parents who had strong views on the subject of Zionism or Israel, I didn't give the issue much thought when I was growing up. Since Benedickt was both Jewish and raised by parents who did have strong views on the issue, its not surprising that she has put a great deal of thought into the issue. And given her parent's strong views on the subject, it also isn't surprising that when she started to form her own differing views, it was a big deal in her family. I, on the other hand, could either be a big supporter or a big detractor of Israel, and it wouldn't overly concern anyone in my family. On that particular issue, there is no pressure in my family to toe the group identity line.

243 HOWEVER.

Unlike what you did with your comment, in which you do get into the specifics and merits of your views. 245 Nascar has had a Drive for Diversity program for years now, maybe a decade or more, where Nascar picks a handful of non-white males to highlight and promote. I think they get some money, not sure. The extra promotion really helps attract sponsors, though.

Bubba benefited from that. Raw talent wise he's ... pretty good. As the only black driver in one of Nascar's national series, he's higher profile than he would be if he were a white guy. But that's understandable. He's won a couple times now, so that's really good for him and his prospects.

No stars have come yet out of the Drive for Diversity program. Most wash out after a few years.

There are a good # of young, Mexican drivers coming up.

Nascar runs a series in Mexico (Nascar Mexico). Nascar really hopes they can find a young bilingual Mexican star to promote.

Daniel Suarez is the current rising Mexican star. He needs to work on his English, but I expect him to be moved up and promoted from Nascar Mexico soon. He ran a Nationwide race this year.

Nascar runs local series in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. The Mexico series has been pretty successful at growing the market for stock car racing in Mexico in the last decade.

273 I've had new U S Flag that was flown over The Capitol for over a month. I put on second floor back porch because holder is there. I ordered another holder for front porch & my brother put where I said I would like it. My next door neighbor is starting that descent into full blown Alzheimer's & was very upset when I moved from back to front porch. She asked why I moved it & I told her it belongs on First Floor Front Porch because I'm proud to be an American. She proceeded to tell me it wasn't hanging just right.
I responded that I was losing daylight & was getting more fertilizer & would look at it when I took it in the house for the night.

Her husband is very active & doesn't look 86 years old. He came over a day later to ask me what I did or said to her. I have been on that side of my mother becoming so angry & violent from that fucking disease I'm glad I'm glad she's pissed off at me instead of her husband. Two minutes after we talked about me moving flag I was out in front & all I could hear was F word from her at her husband.

There is no point in fighting or trying to reason with them. Once, if you are lucky, you may be able to calm them, but it requires meds.

I forgot to take my flag in tonight & now I'm going to turn porch light on.

280 Nascar's push to find a Mexican or Mex-American driver to promote makes business sense. Same thing so many sport do. NBA pushed the shit out of Yao Ming. MLB uses their Japanese and Korean stars to market in Asia.

Nascar is forever determined to become the F1 of stock car racing -- a true international series. They have Ambrose from Australia. They had Montoya from Columbia for a few years, but he went back to IndyCar.

They aren't close to their goal, but that's their goal.

As for gay drivers, they did have Tim Richmond die of AIDS back in the late 80s. The official line is that he wasn't gay just a playboy who slept around. The same official line that Magic Johnson has.

300 Gordon's had multiple hot ass wives and several kids. He's not gay.

Part of it is a lot of drivers are tiny dudes built like jockeys. So they seem effeminate.

Kyle Larson, the new young stud, is freakin tiny. And neat. And I could easily see people calling him gay.

He also just recently announced he knocked up his girlfriend. He's only 21. He's already rich, though, so he can afford it.

I think Nascar has a problem with the increasing tininess of their drivers. Kyle Larson is a stud, but a 5'6 stud.

Skinny and 5'6 is not the most imposing phyique. But again, he's rich and just knocked up his hot girlfriend, so he's doing pretty ok in life.

318 "the 'tuna' that made you so sick most likely was NOT TUNA but Escolar?"

Not knowing or remembering anything about the particulars of this event, I can personally attest from prior experience that escolar is nasty.

I'm a pretty classic old-school American guy when it comes to eating out of the back corners of the fridge. The missus is horrified with me at times when I haul out ancient leftovers.

"You're going to have THAT for dinner while I'm away? It has gray-green mold spots all over it! Is your life insurance premium paid up?"

I haven't yet discovered the new penicillin. However, I also rarely get sick from what I eat. But boy howdy, I got what was likely a side of escolar labeled as some other kind of fish (quite common in the seafood industry) and despite my cast-iron stomach in general, I was _sick_ afterwards. Really badly sick.

Someone with fragile digestion might have ended up in the hospital, or worse. I was grouchy and shakey and pale and running at both ends. And considering what it takes to get me in that condition, yikes.

478 Just as a general review of my day, I spent an inordinate amount of time with Quicken customer support. I've had years and years as a Quicken customer, and I'm seriously considering a change.

The issue is that Quicken's primary value is keeping a central repository of all your financial information on your private hard disk, protected by a login. It has a "update now" button that queries all your financial institutions for new transactions and adds that to the repository.

This worked, more-or-less, until my last update on June 5 of this year. After that, the program demanded that I log into some sort of Intuit service before it would download transactions. Incidentally, the software also lists "Quicken Visa, Quicken Bill Pay, Experian
Credit Score, and Quicken Online Backup" as being services offered by Intuit/Quicken -- as I'm interested in none of these, I would naturally avoid logging into any service that might accidentally do any of them if I accidentally clicked the mouse 1/4" sideways. But they now claim that logging in to their blasted Intuit ID is necessary for the core functionality of their product -- downloading transactions -- and for regular maintenance software updates. Mind you, this was not true on June 1.

Furthermore, being the paranoid bastard that I am, I strongly suspect that the whole "log into Intuit ID" thing is either (a) driven by the NSA wanting to grope my finances; or (b) driven by Intuit wanting to claw themselves into an intermediary position between me and my banks and brokers, so they can skim something of value out of the middle.

So I hit their website. One of the "hot topic" questions was about Intuit ID, so I figured they're getting a bit of skepticism. I finally ended up in an internet chat with "Francis". I asked him how long it would be before there was a patch so that you didn't need to login your Intuit account. This is still unanswered.

So, I'm just letting people know -- As of June 1, the basic functionality of Quicken worked without logging into some corporate fuck-me-in-the-ass account....but as of now it doesn't. Until they fix this, I would avoid Quicken like the plague, where before I had thought they were one of the good guys who might actually keep my private data safe and private.

Nah, that part's old with this software. They have long-since figured that the software would only last 3 years before you had to buy it again. This is about who owns your data -- you, the NSA, or Intuit. Being a CPA, I'll do that shit on paper before I'll let anyone else own it.

It's not shame. These men were called by honor to fight for the light. They fought honorably, but were killed -- and tens of thousands of strangers attended their funerals to celebrate their calling. It is a noble calling, and a virtuous one, but it is a calling -- and no shame attaches if you are not called or have other obligations.

487 Product testing is apparently a lost art at Dell is it isn't a piece of hardware. I just took one of their tests to certify I can go into someone's office and change out a bad part part without spitting on the floor or bringing embarrassment to the company in some way.

Several of the questions were plainly written by someone who isn't a native English speaker. Others use nomenclature that was changed in the final version of the study materials. One question uses an acronym that appears nowhere in the study materials but is critical to assessing the question. This is a test that has been in use since 2010 but nobody seems inclined to fix it.

It pisses me off when my score is based on poor quality control and luck rather than mastery of the material.

488 Wow. Just wow.

Intuit support just hung up on me.

The deal is that I crashed Pale Moon while fiddling about with something else, and it came back up with an active Quicken chat from nowhere -- so I got this:

" cthulhu@XXXXXX.com: Let me say that again. If it is Intuit's policy, as it has never been before, that an Intuit ID is required to obtain free updates to your Intuit software, then I will be an ex-customer of Intuit. Instead of accumulating and safeguarding personal financial data, the company has confused its purpose with accumulating "likes" on facebook.

Jestoni: An Intuit ID is not required to use Quicken. Select Use Quicken without connecting at the bottom of the first registration page if you don't want to setup an Intuit ID. However, if you would like to take advantage of Quicken's online services, such as downloading transactions, free updates, or mobile sync, registering an Intuit ID with Quicken is required.

Jestoni: If you are unhappy with the new Intuit ID requirement for online activities in Q2014, I recommend you make your sentiments known on the Quicken feedback site.

You can log your own report and add your comments and vote to existing reports. You vote by clicking the +1 button in the topmost post in each thread. Threads with more votes are more likely to be addressed.
Jestoni: Here is the master thread on the topic:

http://tinyurl.com/k9r8bq5

Here is the main page where you can log your own report:

https://getsatisfaction.com/quicken

cthulhu@XXXXXX.com: I've gone through this before. Downloading transactions and updating the program have worked for years without a login to Intuit, and there's no logical reason for this to change now -- unless Intuit is attempting to intercept data, which is entirely unacceptable.
Jestoni: Now lets talk about risk. I don't see how people think that their risk has gone up. Any risk there was in the past is still there, and the Intuit Id hasn't added to that risk as far as I can see. Now this is based on what Intuit has said about the Intuit Id, and you could choose not to believe them. But if you want to go that route then why did you think you were safe when they told you that your Direct Connect usernames/passwords are only in the password vault and used only when transmitting them to the financial institution. Clearly you can not really confirm that, you have to have faith in them. So I see no reason not to believe them about what an Intuit Id is used for.

http://tinyurl.com/lrsdfu4

cthulhu@XXXXXX.com: Thank you for that link. It amply demonstrates that I am not alone with my concerns. WHEN WILL THIS SHIT GO AWAY???????????? Because I'm not going to be talked out of it. In then next two weeks, I will either have a date when this will be gone, or I will have purchased SOME OTHER PROGRAM without the same problem and will never consider Intuit to be a viable software vendor for ANYTHING ever again. Where's the patch? How many days? "

502 I lost my comment!
I'm embarrassed by how little I weigh.i have been eating either two English muffins with least 1/4 stick of butter or icicles( I think they are local pastry) my father used to buy from one of two bakeries when I was very young. I forgot about them until I drove past a local bakery 5 years ago after a wake. They are oblong white cakes with chocolate frosting, coconut & walnuts.. The bakeries my late father used to buy them from are long gone but I saw the one & called next day'& they almost always have them,
There is a second local bakery that makes them & they are better because baker uses chocolate syrup in the frosting.

I am going there today after I have my teeth cleaned.

516 Nearly a third of Senate Democrats' version of President Barack Obama's $3.7 billion emergency supplemental appropriations spending bill for the border crisis will be spent on other issues than the border crisis if it were to pass, the Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee announced on Wednesday.

An analysis of the spending in the emergency supplemental appropriations bill released by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) shows that $615 million of the president's spending request would be for wildfire fighting, and $225 million of the bill is for spending on the Iron Dome in Israel.

519 British Inventor Builds Giant 'Fart Machine' to Fire at France

Colin Furze, a plumber and inventor from Stamford, Lincolnshire, has begun building the biggest fart machine ever, which he plans to place on top of the cliffs of Dover and aim across the Channel towards France. His hope is that the French, 21 miles away, will hear the blast.

The machine, which Furze will house in a pair of specially constructed buttocks, is a giant pulse valveless jet engine -- as used in Nazi V-1 bombs during the Second World War -- that creates a plume of fire to go along with its deafening roar. Furze hopes to mount the contraption on the cliffs of Dover on July 24, between 6 and 7pm.

527 At the time the report was put together, all 11 of the undercover operatives were still technically enrolled in ObamaCare plans, which would cost taxpayers a total of $30,000 in subsidies this year.

Health and Human Services officials told the GAO they had no evidence of fraud. How could they when, as the GAO learned, the HHS contractor hired to verify applicant information "is not in a position to know if fraud is being attempted"?

The scale of the problem is potentially massive. According to the GAO, 4.3 million ObamaCare applications have known "inconsistencies" -- most of which involve questions about citizenship or income. Only 650,000 of these -- or 15% -- have been cleared.

585 Misleading headline in the sidebar there. It says "agent draws gun on boy scout." It should read "boy scout leader claims agent draws gun on boy scout, border patrol says video evidence clearly shows no gun was drawn."

I know some people around here hyperventilate about out of control cops and related personnel, but it doesn't mean you have to believe everything you read in the sidebar of the AoSHQ.

587 I don't understand what was botched about the execution last night? Did you all read what this SOB did to get executed. If he suffered, he did not sufffer enough for me. Yeah I'm an SOB also, but I'm your SOB

Well in Hebrew "Windbreaker" also translates into: " Hey anyone got a match, I wanna show ya something"

594 Morning thread finally up

595 Human bodies, durable as they can be, are actually quite fragile. People are killed all over the world every minute, often without half trying. How hard is it for the State to administer death to someone strapped down?

Where are the pro-death-penalty marches demanding better executions? This drug stuff is inhumane!

Since this seems to be as morning as we get today, with Vic & all, guess I'll say this here:

Morning, Glories!

Might as well skip the THC thread and go straight to the dump at this point, eh?

Looks like AZ botched the execution yesterday. The anti-death penalty

crowd will have a field day. Time to go back to sure methods and get rid

of the so-called "humane" drug thing.

I'm partial to execution in the manner in which the criminal executed his victims. Or, a bullet.

601 So another flight disappeared. This one was headed to Algeria.

602 Tracy Van Slyke of the Guardian who's unclear on the difference between steam and smoke among many, many other things.

No
one's reading this, but steam engines do puff smoke out the smokestack.
They have to burn fuel to make steam. (The steam comes out at the
cylinders, down near the wheels. Or the whistle.) And the show does
portray a large chromatic difference between steam engine smoke and
diesel smoke.

That doesn't make the race-baiting any less ridiculous, but the snark misses the mark here.
