WSJ Op-Ed: Hey, Conservatives, Stop Beating Up on Crony Capitalism

!!!

He actually, out of his own mouth, seems to equate "big business" with "crony capitalism."

I guess we're not debating the terminology any longer.

Amid the fight for the soul of the Republican Party, some elements of the GOP coalition have become overtly hostile to Big Business.

Defeating crony capitalism has become the battle cry of libertarian conservatives.

The Export-Import Bank has become the latest in a long line of targets that include highway funding, terrorism risk insurance and "too big to fail" banks.

Big Business wants immigration reform and higher academic standards for elementary and secondary schools--policy priorities that drive the hard right into conniptions.

...

What would happen if Big Business decided to change sides? What would happen if the Chamber of Commerce suddenly stopped being a huge fundraising machine for the Republican Party and started financing pro-business Democrats?

Ah, so it's hardball, then.

Well here's another question, then: What if the GOP began pushing a business tax break for small and mid-sized business to be paid for by a tax increase on big business?

So long as we're talking about Things We Each Could Do.

WSJ isn't Big Government.

WSJ is HUGE All-Controlling Government.

WSJ is pro-fascism, yet weirdly anti-regulation.

18 Crony capitalism is where you use the power of government to enrich your friends, who, in turn, feed you campaign money, business insider tips, special opportunities on land purchases, and offer to start up businesses in your district where your voters can score high paying jobs if you can get the business a tax exemption

In other words, 'crony capitalism' is corruption in government.

Honest government is where all laws are administered equally without special exemptions for special friends of government. Where all laws apply equally to everyone even government officials. Where paying bribes to government officials for special favors gets both the bribe payer and the bribe taker a long prison sentence.

Crony capitalism is where you use the power of government to enrich your friends, and yourself. You don't tell business how to operate, or what to make as long as you get your cut.

Fascism is where the government tells business what to make, and how to make it. Fascist government doesn't care if the business makes a profit, or if the business owner makes a profit, and if the business owner gets to be too much of a pest, you just replace him with someone else.

40 Hey, the Wall Street Journal is published for...Wall Street. What a surprise! There is an opportunity for conservatives who are willing to broaden their approach a bit and not be completely reflexive in their support of "capitalism." Adam Smith himself was not a supporter of capitalism, at least not in the sense that Big Business uses the term. Not in the sense of the smug summer cottage owners represented in this article. WSJ conservatism is just one kind of conservatism, and an ugly one at that. The false hubris on display in this article indicates that it may be on the decline. And that's not necessarily something to be lamented.

55 Capitalism is a meritocracy.
Or at least in it's purist form, it is.

You make a good product...people will choose to buy it.

Cronyism is a corruption of Capitalism.
It's paying off government officials to grant you...something...either a grant, or a contract, or something that gives you an edge over your competitors.

So...cronyism is the opposite of what capitalism is supposed to be.

The term 'Crony Capitalism' hurts the cause of capitalism, by making it sound like the cronyism is the fault of capitalism.

When in fact...there is even more cronyism in a socialistic form of government.

It is corporatism.

Corporatism is when labor, business, farmer, &c. is brought into the fold of the state for the aims and benefit of the state, and where said labor, business, farmer, &c. is benefited in turn by the state for their service.

Corporatism is a way of organizing the economic life of a country under the direction of the state. It is the state that creates a corporatist economy, not the free market.

Well, the corrupting influence of their money would go to the Dems, who are evil anyway, so no biggie. And Americans would finally have an alternative party to vote for.

I say let's do this.

86 Funny how I became "hard-right" by standing still.

"Could Democrats make a coalition of big business and labor work? "

Sure. Read Atlas Shrugged, and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. They'll grant cheap loans, waivers, and tax credits to "too big to fail" firms, import cheap labor, and make effectively impractical to strike without Administration permission, or effectively impractical to resist a strike without Administration permission.

89 There's a reason CEOs of GE, Facebook, Google, salesforce.com, etc are Democrats. I don't think they're all that into paying 90% personal income taxes.

What they are into is being BFF with the president who will make life a living hell for anyone who tries to challenge their supremacy.

It's not so much they like Democrats, they like the party that likes regulation. And it happens to be the Democrats. If Republicans came out tomorrow and said we'll regulate twice as much, they'd all be Republicans tomorrow as well.

92 Pro business democrats are a myth because the modern democrat 'business' requires government subsidies to survive. Without the government money the business fails to make a profit, and usually the VIPs running the business loot the cash flow to the point where government subsidies can't keep the business in business.

93 59...It is corporatism.

Corporatism is when labor, business, farmer, c. is brought into the fold of the state for the aims and benefit of the state, and where said labor, business, farmer, c. is benefited in turn by the state for their service.

Corporatism is a way of organizing the economic life of a country under the direction of the state. It is the state that creates a corporatist economy, not the free market.

----------

No...what you've described here, TPH, is Statism and Socialism.

The Corporations are doing what they can to survive in the socialistic burdens that the State has created.

The same corruptions occur in totally socialist countries...as a way to survive, on the part of the Corporations.
And as a way for the corrupt governments to profit from their positions of power.

This doesn't happen in S. America or Europe or Asia. Today's 10 biggest companies in those areas are the same 10 biggest companies as 10 years ago or 50 years ago.

And it's happening in the US as well. Too big to fail = too big to give a fuck about innovation and meeting customer needs.

So if you are a big time CEO, consider the matrix of results;

Support Democrats, Democrats Win: The economy does worse, but you get major favors out of the government, that accrued to YOUR company, not your competitors.

Support Democrats, Republicans Win:The economy does better, you get neither helped nor hurt by the government

Support Republicans, Republicans Win: The economy does better, you might get small favors out of the government.

Support Republicans, Democrats Win: The economy does worse. The government actively comes after you and aides your competitors.

It is no surprise that big business is slowly but surely trending left...

I think the CoC over estimates the power they have with small business men. A couple a leading questionnaires and a small fee for a few networking events do not a power base make. A real Conservative play would be to demand a review of those bullshit questions.

Raise a red flag like - end withholding or make health care a personal deduction and lets see how the CoC handles it.

----------------------------------------------------

Common Core in and of itself isn't a problem. In fact, there are some ways it could be very good, since in many ways it gives teachers freer rein to do what needs to be done.

The problem is that most teachers are not that good. Worse, many are activist-minded cogs in the machine.

So what CC is doing is essentially freeing up the people who are in the system already to further disseminate their propaganda and blend it in with teaching materials.

This doesn't HAVE to happen; very little in CC that I've seen mandates this. But that's what will happen--Personnel is policy. Just like the IRS, the schools have already weaponized themselves; they don't need CC to do that. All it does is give them cover to implement.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite."

187 Off topic - a couple of threads back there was a discussion of whether or not Sarah Silverman is hot. I would like to add a few comments about women you see on television. Women on TV are to beauty what NFL players are to the game of football. If you actually met one of those women in a typical social setting you would realize just how stunning they really are. People are put on television primarily for their looks - if you have a choice between two talented people - the better looking one goes on the air. Because of the constant flow of beauty on TV the audience develops a perspective distortion.

Here is an example of how that perspective distortion effects people. Twenty some years ago I was a bouncer at the topless bar where Anna Nicole Smith danced before she became famous. One of the waitresses decided to become a dancer and the other bouncers and I discussed her decision - we thought she was OK looking - but nothing special. A few days later after Judo practice we were in a mall in Houston having lunch and looking at the girls in the mall. There were perhaps 2000 people total in the main concourse of the mall having lunch. Suddenly the room quieted noticeably and every male head turned to look at this stunning beauty who had just walked in. I nudged my friend who had his back to the scene and said "Check her out." He said "Wow she is really fine." As she got closer we realized it was the waitress we had been discussing at the bar. When Anna Nicole Smith at her young best looks normal to you - you have lost perspective.

Yep. And Microsoft are out there telling K-12 technology officials up and down the country that in order to be "Common Core ready", they all need to implement Windows 8 immediately.

Note that, as usual, the bullshit is impeccably bipartisan. The Bush family are all in for Common Core, and a ton of the groundwork for CC was laid by George Dubya.

The fact that Neil Bush owns a digital courseware company that provides Common Core to schools? Left discreetly unmentioned at all times. You and I, as members of the serf class, are not expected to notice or understand the doings of Our Betters.

Just watched AZ Gubernatorial GOP Debate.

Gabe Malor is gonna lose his mind, cuz I liked Sndrew Thomas the best and he may do well! He is the former embattled Atty who with Sherif Joe traded accusations investigations lawsuits & fines vs Maricopa Cohnty Board of Supervisors and drove Gabe nuts then

But he is far and away best on immigration issue/ all aspects
He cited the CIS study showing all the job creation has find to legal & illegal immigrants
He is a loose cannon but IMO he is pointed in the right direction He recognizes AZ is make or break situation if border not secured and isnt afraid of a fight with the media He is virulently anti CommonCore.

Doug Ducey is my 2nd choice, current State Trez, talks tough on border but unlike Thimas doesn't want a fence Agsinst CommonCore promises no new taxes

Scott Smith former mayor of Mesa is a total Bush Rove Republican. He was proud to cite his work with head of EPA in DC to help alleviate a regulation. He wants to make deals He fully supports common core under its new name but its common core and he is a lets be sensible we can't do this of that or anything really on illegal aliens He kept talking about the children He also supported the increased sales tax

Christine Jones is a GoDaddy exec. with lots of managed talking points but is IMO a deal maker like Brewer do nothing would change there

Our current Sec State is running as well can't recall his name but he seems to be the type who would let himself get rolled in the deal making and was a weaker seeming version
of Ducey

--Have you seen the cover of the latest Jennifer Lopez album? Well, I've only seen ads for it, which are splashed around the entrances to the local HMV stores. They're, uh, very distracting, airbrushing or no. What is pathetic, though, is that the woman has to be 46 or 47 or thereabouts an still tarting up for a night on the town. She's pretty naturally beautiful, but after multiple marriages has no offspring to pass along her genes an will probably die alone encased in botox and silicone.

418 @177 Let's talk about the academic media complex. OK, let's:

Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our
industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution
during recent decades.

In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more
formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is
conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed
by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing
fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the
fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a
revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs
involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for
intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds
of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal
employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we
should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that
public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological
elite.

All depends on what you're looking for. If you want a wife, that play won't work. If you just need to get your pencil wet, it just might.

at this point: has this gone so far beyond mockable that it's not funny?

I don't know 1 single American male that would be "intimidated" by Barack Obama.

460 Being a small business owner sucks.

I get to do all the work with none of the crony.

Posted by: The Walking Dude at July 21, 2014 11:05 PM (IKYcF)

461 big business already funds the democratic party machine. the big biz cronies don't get it. the democratic party is very far to the left, and while the left will be happy to play along for a while, eventually big biz will find that they have provided the very rope from whence they shall hang. what this wsj moron is advocating is basically a partnership that is quite reminiscent of il duce: a joining of the power of the state with the corporate power. all the appearances of some private enterprise, but where in reality, only a select few are permitted to conduct business. is this really what we've come to?
