Our Petty, Psychologically Infirm President

Peggy Noonan:

No one's in charge! No one is taking responsibility. No one who wants to help has authority, and no one with authority is helping.

...

The president of course has rushed to the scene--to go, as always, to fundraisers. This is at the moment a scandal, but why? Clever people say it's an unforced error. He has to show he cares! He ought to journey to an overwhelmed border area, stand there and point to the middle distance as a local official in a hopefully picturesque hat briefs him. It's almost touching how much the press wants to see this. But why? Why do they want to see the president enact a degree of alarm he clearly does not feel?

For a quarter-century I have been puzzled by the press's emphasis on "optics," their stupid word--actually it is a consultants' word they've lamely adopted--—for how things look as opposed to how they are. Their criticism comes down to a complaint they're not being manipulated well enough. It is a strange complaint.

...

There is every sign he let the crisis on the border build to put heat on Republicans and make them pass his idea of good immigration reform. It would be "comprehensive," meaning huge, impenetrable and probably full of mischief. His base wants it. It would no doubt benefit the Democratic Party in the long term.

The little children in great danger, holding hands, staring blankly ahead, are pawns in a larger game. That game is run by adults. How cold do you have to be to use children in this way?

A progressive Bloomberg columnist admitted just this yesterday -- loud and proud, actually. Noah Rothman termed it a "slip" but that undersells it -- the truth didn't just dribble out of him. He turned the spigot with a wrench and let it gush forth.

In “Obama’s Midterm Surprise: Immigration,” Wilkinson... asserted that Democrats should be elated about the crisis on the border.

...

Appearing on MSNBC to discuss his thesis, Wilkinson went a step further than he did in his column. In this segment, he suggested that Obama “wants” the present crisis, and he wants it to be a "big" one.

"I think he wants this to be a big problem,"Wilkinson told the hosts of MSNBC's The Cycle on Thursday. "I think he wants this to be such big problem right now that Congress has to deal with it, and that the media’s focused on it, and that the American public is focused on it."

Never let a crisis of your own creation go to waste.

Via @rdbrewer4, Peter Wehrer looks at Obama and sees a mass of deep psychological flaws and tics.

Early on with Mr. Obama, I assumed his chronic finger pointing was simply cynical. It may be that in part, but it seems to me to be more than that. It’s one thread in a larger psychological tapestry.

The president is a man who has a grandiose sense of himself, a very strong sense of entitlement, and is, even for a politician, unusually prickly and self-pitying. He is blind to the damage he’s doing and the failures he’s amassed. His self-conception--pragmatic, empirical, non-ideological, self-reflective, willing to listen to and work with others, intellectually honest, competent at governing–is at odds with reality. Mr. Obama is constantly projecting his own weaknesses onto his political opponents. There are never any honest differences with Obama; he is always impugning the motives of his critics--they put "party ahead of country"--while presenting his own motives as being as pure as the new-driven snow. And whatever goes wrong on his watch is always the result of someone or something else. There's a kind of impressive consistency to Obama's blame game. It never rests, and it applies to every conceivable circumstance....

What all these things in combination result in is an inability to adjust to circumstances and self-correct. There’'s a marked rigidity, a lack of cognitive flexibility, in Mr. Obama. He has to be right, he is always right...

Yup.

Via Hot Air, the Washington Post finally notices the complete inappropriateness of Obama's latest Social Media Distraction game, #TheBearIsLoose, while the country lurches from one crisis to the next:

'The bear is loose': Is Obama breaking free or running away?

By Juliet Eilperin

Bears, beer and horse heads: What exactly is going on with the leader of the free world?

On a single day this week in Denver, President Obama scarfed down pizza and drinks with strangers, shot pool with Colorado's governor and shook hands with a guy on the street wearing a horse mask. His top staffers are promoting these stops on Twitter with the hashtag #TheBearIsLoose -- a term one of Obama's aides coined in 2008 when the candidate would defy his schedule.

More than five years into his presidency, Obama is trying to free himself from the constraints of office, whether by strolling on the Mall or hopscotching the country as part of a campaign-style tour. White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer says the president "just wants to get out" and influence "our overall political conversation" by connecting with ordinary Americans.

But to some, breaking free can also look like running away.

Yes, it and it can also look like "not doing your job." Let's conduct a thought experiment: In your mind only, get up from your desks, stop doing any work, go out into the street, and shake hands with people.

Then come back and tell your boss "I just wanted to have a conversation with regular Americans" or "I wanted to influence our national political conversation by 'getting real' with the American voters."

Now, guess within one hour the number of hours it will take before your boss directs you to "influence the national political conversation" while answering Help Wanted adverts in the newspaper.

Obama’s trip to Colorado and Texas this week took place against the backdrop of a burgeoning crisis on the Mexican border, where tens of thousands of children have been apprehended seeking entry into the United States. In Dallas, Obama dismissed the idea of heading farther south for a border visit as a "photo op" -- not long after those photo ops showing him shooting pool and sipping beer in Denver.

And then she gets back on track and paints a rather more sympathetic picture of Obama and his "frustrations" with Republicans.

Eh, this last article is all rather obvious. It's stuff we've talked about for days. But I guess we mainly read the MSM now to see if they've become aware of the obvious three days after the rest of the country.

16 Why shouldn't Dear Leader do whatever he wants? That's a serious question, by the by. Why not? Who is going to stop him?

If a person refuses to accept the constraints on his position, then others are forced to act to impose those constraints. But if the person who is violating those constraints knows that those who will attempt to enforce the constraints are themselves hamstrung because they recognize and abide by constraints that the violator does not, well, then the violator has all control.

So why not do whatever he wants. There is no one who is going to stop him.

43 Excellently put, your stompiness.

But it's more than Barack Obama. It's a Federal Leviathan which is so in control it can decide whether or not to meet its commitments.

And, again, you're right- the people who should be holding the Feds to account (the States) can't/won't.

Add those together, and you begin to see why I don't think marching on Washington is going to do any good. A million Americans descending on the capitol? What are they going to do?

On the other hand, you get 20,000 people to descend on each of the State capitols, and things change. State officials start worrying about their own positions, and might become a bit more bold in protecting us from the Federal Leviathan.

The US Supreme Court has no enforcement arm.

The US Congress has the illusionary Power of the Purse (which can only effect NEXT years spending, not this years), and Impeachment (which will not get through the Senate).

The US Military has spent the last Generation kicking out anyone with solid Character, so now those in the Pentagon are PC Yesmen.

The Dept. of Homeland Security, has been Militarizing its Police... and we no longer have competing agencies to watch over each other.

The Militia (Guard), has been Nationalized... and is now under control of the PC Pentagon Yesmen.

There is no available check on Presidential Power, at this time.... they have spent YEARS rigging the game... and now all those changes, which some of us tried to warn against, are being used by a corrupt Despot... which was historically inevitable.

Obama is not the CAUSE of this... he is just the inevitable Straw breaking the camel's back.

76 " Is there ever a point where Peggy's done enough to absolve herself of 2008? "

The problem people have with that episode isn't that she did something that was mean, its that it was so clearly such a retarded and unwise position to take. It speaks to her obvious lack of judgment and discernment, that she can be easily taken in by a slick and charismatic figure. That she's swayed by sophistry and marketing.

So, we cannot ever, ever trust her judgment on anything, ever again. She can say stuff that's good as I noted above, but never again is she to be relied on for any analysis or discernment on any topic or person. She's proven she's easily distracted by shiny objects.

I can still like kitty despite the fact that he has the attention span of a gnat. I just never will trust kitty's judgment when it comes to paying attention.

81 Obama wants this crisis for the long term.
Short term he's accepted the Democrats are gonna take a hit.
Long term he's changing the demographics of the Nation.
Plus he wants young hispanics to grow up seeing picture of fat, white Republicans in American flag t-shirts protesting against hispanics.

The Democrats get 90% of the black vote by convincing blacks that the Repubs are mostly white racists that hate black people.

It's been an incredibly effective political strategy. It beats every other issue.

They plan to run the same campaign for the hispanic vote for the next 50 years. Vote Democrat cause the Republicans are just nasty, old, white racists who hate you and your family cause they hate brown skin, they hate anybody who isn't white.

They crash the system, and WE eradicate THEM. The "System" Is the only thing keeping us from going for their entrails.

We are not Russians, with a long history of Oppression. We are not Germans with a tacit acceptance of Dictatorial rigidity. We are Americans who were born free and are quite accustomed to it. We are also ingenious and resourceful.

92 I said it earlier in the week. Obama is not a mastermind with a plan to do anything, he is flailing around. His administration is flailing around. There is no guidance to any agency or any real priorities set and as a consequence the federal agenicies are out on their own doing what ever the most activist and energetic types (usually not the brightest types either) want to do.

"Wow!" you think. "He's getting the USA's destruction done without lifting a finger!" Yeah. Sure. What he is doing is driving his supporters and his fellow Democrats bonkers. Partying down while a crisis goes on is one of the things that tends to drive resets in cultural and governmental systems. Giving speeches to an adoring crowd of sycophants doesn't impress anyone else who is dealing with the crisis. Exasperates would be the better word.

This isn't going to end pretty for the country, but it will likely end worse for those who are near Obama when the "let them eat cake, I got to party tonight" finally snaps the back of the metaphorical camel.

True push back against the Federal Leviathan will demand that states remove themselves from the Federal teat. While there is some hope of this given the various responses to setting up Federal health insurance exchanges and the Medicaid expansion bribery, the majority of the evidence shows that such an occurrence is unlikely. So, no, swaying the vote will not necessarily matter so long as Uncle Sugar can write those checks. Not to mention write those checks whilst holding the highway money and farm/dairy/whatever subsidies hostage.

This is why one of the quickest ways to see flames, flames on the side of my face is to mention Ag policy around me.

Idk about other states, but here in TX it can. Indeed, it was fear of ticking off Conservatives as much as anything else that kept the Legislature from expanding Medicaid here. Similarly when Rick Perry turned down some federal money a few years ago (I don't remember specifics), it was fear of Conservatives that kept the legislature from overturning it.

A billion dollar check so you can send a few million to your friends (remember, everyone else in the State government gets to do the same) is one thing. Doing that once and then never being able to do it again vs relying only on State level graft in perpetuity? That's a different equation.

This is human nature. Even in the countries that appear to be ethnically homogenous from the outside are organized along tribal divisions. See: Afghanistan, Iraq, any country in Africa.

As much as the Democrats claim to respect everyone as equals, they are masters at tribal warfare, and we suck at it.

When your tribe's values consist of being left alone, handling your business and being responsible for your own welfare, you are easy meat for the bands of marauding Free Shitters roving the savannah, looking for a herd of peaceful antelopes to drag down and devour.

We will do down first. That's a given. Then the patchwork of special snowflake groups will turn on each other.

Human history. Wash, rinse, repeat.

No, I do not think I underestimate him at all. What thing in his history demonstrates that he has the drive and amibition to do anything but pursue pleasure and the adulation of crowds? ObamaCare should have been the one thing that he paid any attention to, this was going to be his legacy - and it turns out that as a legacy it is surprisingly apt. It is ill-thought out, poorly written, and abysmally executed. If there had not been super-majorities in the House and Senate it would never have passed; Reid and Pelosi had to do all of the heavy lifting.

Campaigning was the one thing he did right and that still involved all of the stars aligning, the media falling in love with their support of the historic first, and having Axelrod and company in the front room. Since then, when actual adversity has hit all he does is grab the first thing handy, throw that out, and hope the media covers for him. There is no plan, there is no strategy beyond that.

Eventually the group that is NOT being treated fairly will wake up...

White America has been on the LEGAL short end of the stick for a generation. Add in Government not liking Christianity? Add in Government celebrating Gays over Normal folks?

And you CREATE the very division you are supposedly trying to fix.

"I think to most conservatives she has - obviously not to everyone on this board."

Condign punishment for Noonan, David Brooks, Ann Althouse, Walter Russell Mead and the rest of the former pants-crease admirers would be for them to apologize, deeply and meaningfully, and retire permanently from discussion of public affairs.

Consider someone whose opinion had previously been shown to be not just wrong, but dramatically and spectacularly wrong, on what was an easily obvious matter of discernment. Hearing such a person continue to opine is not of interest. They're unfit for purpose and they need to stop.

This, pretty much.

Also, what galls me about the reaction is how disconnected it is from her supposed sins. She wrote a couple of nice things about Barack Obama (WELL short of actually endorsing him). Oh well, not good for sure but not a hanging offense either. She criticized Sarah Palin as being unready for the job: obviously true in retrospect, as everyone now concedes.

And for this we must all rotely, ritually engage in a Leftist-style Group Hate every time her name is mentioned (and even when what she writes is really cutting, really powerful stuff)? It's permissible to call her a "bint" and a "cunt"? Won't be forgiven until dead? Seriously?

251 You're right, all they have to do is wait, keep passing laws, raising taxes, and wait.

That's it.

That's not "all they have to do."

That's all they have to do as long as people keep obeying the law. At some point, people will break. Maybe the Gods of the Copybook Headings will finally call us to account, and the music will stop. Then the people to break will be the FSA.

Maybe they won't, taxes will keep going up, and it'll be the self-reliant and personally-responsible who break. The thing is, there are a lot of *those* people who still do things like farming, driving trucks, and know how to build stuff.

Where does food come from? The FSA will just keep getting theirs while "we" wither and fall? Yeah, until farmers realize how screwed they are and stop sending food to market.

No one is coming after you? Yeah, until you stop letting them take from you without force.

There are three options here.

Option 1- Conservatives take government back. The tide is slowed, and eventually stopped. This is... unlikely.

Option 2- The FSA remains in control, and Conservatives continue to act like battered wives- "Oh, they wouldn't hit us if we didn't make them angry!" This is rather more likely. If you're going to do anything other than fight this option with every last breath, you're not my compatriot. At best you're an enabler of the FSA.

Option 3- The FSA remains in control of political power, and eventually Conservatives refuse to participate. If you think the FSA will let Conservatives "Go Galt" without a fight, I believe you're very mistaken- but in an actual fight, Conservatives can win.

I'd prefer option 1. I'll take option 3. I'll be damned before I sit around and let option 2 happen.

Did the ass rape actually occur?

Unless the left wing media reports it accurately, the answer is no, it didn't.

Because I didn't know that US politics had reached the point where disagreeing with someone else was a question of sins minor and major; I was still under the impression that it consisted of something a little more temporal and alot less spiritual.

You can take her opinion in whole or part or reject it in whole or part for whichever reasons you choose. But to say she has to do such-and-such before she can be forgiven or that she can never be forgiven; well alright. That id your perogative - but that is as far as it goes.

284 "She criticized Sarah Palin as being unready for the job: obviously true in retrospect, as everyone now concedes."

Really? Everyone?

Consider hoiw laser-accurate the "unready" Palin has been in her predictions about the foreign policy disasters to come on Obama's watch.

In addition to her correctly summing up that Obamanomics would consist of spending more borrowed money than ever before in history to produce only tepid economic growth.

And then of course she was bang on the mark about Obamacare. Right down to the death panels, which sure as hell are part of the package. They're not called death panels, for obviousl reasons, but for all intents and purposes, they are just that. Government bureaucrats will make decisions about whether you live or die.

If that's being "unready", let's have some more of it.

The ONLY aspect in which Palin was unready was her unrealistic expectation of fair play by the media.

They mugged her brutally, and she should have known that was going to happen. All Republican aspirants have to know that. Many don't. And it's Not. Just. Sarah. Palin. who was taken by surprise. McCain and Romney and Ryan were just as bewildered as she was when the press turned on them so suddenly after the nomination.

Well, Hitler, obviously yes. Just look at The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin. I think I have a book of pre-war interviews that also paint Hitler as at least slightly inept and dumb, but it is still in a moving box in the garage.

290 If a person refuses to accept the constraints on his position, then others are forced to act to impose those constraints. But if the person who is violating those constraints knows that those who will attempt to enforce the constraints are themselves hamstrung because they recognize and abide by constraints that the violator does not, well, then the violator has all control.

So why not do whatever he wants. There is no one who is going to stop him.

Indeed. Think of the delayed employer mandate. AFAIK, the mandate is in the law and is not one of those ad hoc regulations, and was supposed to go into effect last year?

Anyway, when Obama "delayed" it, that act did not change the actual law, but everyone immediately began behaving as if it did. The insurance companies then complied with his delay decree instead of actual written law, even though everyone knows Obama did not have the authority to do that.

Maybe it's Obama's Black Democratium, but it's quite surreal how almost everyone simply follows Obama's lead when he says something is so and so, even if we know it's not true. Doesn't matter, he said it therefore there can be no opposition.

291 Durbin said he always makes sure to ask conservative judicial nominees whether they support the Griswold ruling, which is at the heart of women's rights issues.

"I asked that question repeatedly of Justice Roberts and Justice Alito to make sure that they would honor that same tradition of privacy. The Hobby lobby decision violates that fundamental premise," said Durbin, who serves on the Judiciary Committee.

While he noted the justices were careful in their answers, "they both said they stood by the Griswold decision."

Durbin's comments came today as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democratic leaders announced new women's healthcare legislation and sharply criticized the Hobby Lobby ruling.

Reid agreed the Senate was misled.

"Alito told us who he was. We let it go," Reid said. "Roberts didn't. He misdirected us. He's certainly been a disappointment to us."

Griswold was a landmark case that overturned a Connecticut statute that prohibited the use of contraceptive devices. In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court ruled the law violated marital privacy, which is protected under the Bill of Rights.

... only an a-hole like Dick-less Durbin would make a dispute over who pays for contraceptives into a ban.

If James leads his team into post-season play in 2016, Republicans could find their preferred June 28 start date for the convention impossible.

That leaves Republicans with the backup date of July 18 -- still earlier than parties typically nominate their presidential hopeful in recent years, but later than RNC chief Reince Priebus preferred.

Dumbasses who spent $100,000 getting a masters degree in puppetry so they could work at Taco Bell won't have to pay back the money they stupidly spent.
-------

I sincerely do not understand this. If he "forgives" student loans, doe that include all future loans as well or just existing loans? And if all future loans are forgiven, how will professors make money? And if all college is free, similar to K-12, doesn't the value of an education get diminished? Or will a few colleges remain pay to attend? And if so, would students from those schools now not have their debt absolved? Sorry if I seem dense. I really do not understand this.

What will be funny is the middle aged illegal aliens posing as students don't even have to rape the average American's child in public school to give them a disease. All they have to do is sit next to them to infect them with one or more various diseases that we had stamped out here long ago.

Then, when they try to get their child treated, they will find very long wait times, because the illegal aliens will be given priority to health care as well.

You can water anything down, though. Including engineering.

I know a guy whose undergrad engineering training was decades ago, but who decided he wanted his actual professional engineer's license as a feather in his cap.

He had to take some classes that had been deemed retroactively necessary, that weren't in the curriculum in his era, so he ended up interacting with modern engineering undergrads at a top tier school.

He said that they visibly aren't as up to speed on the basics as his generation had been. They are far more reliant upon the use of computers. Sometimes without an adequate understanding of the theory underlying the computer model.

I pointed this out yesterday - the press has been rabidly left-wing since the 1930s. The only reason that they attacked Carter was because they wanted Kennedy to replace him on the ticket. They lied about FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, etc.

The reason they spent 100% of their time attacking Nixon, even though he was a moderate, was because he led the prosecution of Alger Hiss, who has been proven to be a Soviet spy.

Obama is "blind to the damage he's doing" ??

Hells, no.

That's the whipped-cream-and-cherry-on-top.

He hates us, twice: He hates Americans-- we're mostly European-derived People of Pallor y'know;
and second, he hates America itself-- especially this idea of equality-under-the-law. He wants to RULE, dammit!

And he wants to rub our collective noses in whatever-it-is he thinks our sins are; he's delighted that he has the power to destroy us bit by bit; he exults at each successive debasement. He's all "I WON," all the time. His tenure has all the hallmarks of African tribalism: overthrow the King and his cronies, raid the treasury, toss the spoils to your tribesmen as a reward for their loyalty, and now YOU're the king and YOU get a turn at terrorizing anyone who displeases you. Make laws by whim, and when your whim changes, make new laws.

That's what he is, it's what he does, and it's what his puppet-handlers use to keep him going every day (instead of just retreating into "more weed, more blow, and get Reggie in here".)

If you were not duped, then you joined other DC 'pros' in enabling this shitstirring, corrupt, lazy, arrogant, racist shuck and jiver to visit unbelievable damage to this once great nation (and the world for that matter).

Personally, I think you knew Barky's game (maybe not how evil he and his people could be) but your jealousy of Sarah Palin's sexuality, actual accomplishment, sincerity and true potential to rise to the presidency after McVain was too much for you to take. You probably sat in some trendy DC eatery with that other jealous, washed up bitch Kathleen Parker and made each other feel relevant by slamming Governor Palin on every front.

For you and Ms. Parker, I dream of a DC party from which there is no escape where the two of you are forced to listen to Teh Won drone on about himself for hours during which you are uncontrollably feeding yourselves appetizers consisting of wet pig shit, dry human turds and rotten corpse dicks, washed down with warm horse piss.
