Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Whistle Blower Allegation: VA Tampered With Records To Hide Deaths Due To Wait TimesTo their credit, CNN has owned this story and they've broken more news on it...according to an employee the VA is still engaging in a cover up and altering records to hide their murderous incompetence (auto-play video but worth a full read) It was one of [VA employee Pauline] DeWenter's roles to call veterans when appointments became available to schedule them to get a consultation. Sometimes when she made those calls, she'd find that the veteran had died, so she would enter that on their records. But at least seven times since last October, records that showed that veterans died while waiting for care -- records which DeWenter personally handled and had entered in details of veterans' deaths -- were physically altered, or written over, by someone else, DeWenter said in an exclusive interview with CNN. The changes, or re-writes, listed the veterans as living, not deceased, essentially hiding their deaths. The alterations had even occurred in recent weeks, she said, in a deliberate attempt to try to hide just how many veterans died while waiting for care, by trying to pretend dead veterans remain alive. From Gabe's morning post the VA still is in denial about the extent of its problems. Seriously, tear it down. If this was a private hospital system, men and women in windbreakers with initials on the back and badges hanging from their necks would be swarming into offices, removing boxes of files and probably frog marching people out in handcuffs. But hey, it's the government so professional courtesy and wait for more IG reports. Added: Senate Democrats just don't care about dead veterans.

They were expenses. Merit increases for reducing expenses. The VA, Indian schools, management of the reservations, military medicine in general, these are all things that the government continues to screw up. And now with a malevolent executive at the top, the modus vivendi is to lie and obscure. It will get worse. I'm surprise that CNN has done this, but pleasantly so. This is pretty much the story of every large government agency, no? Fraud, corruption, graft, indifference to clientele (in this case even up to the point of human suffering and death), records alteration and destruction, political cronyinsm, public money unionism, and on and on and on.
There's something wrong with the types of people who run these agencies (wanton sense of entitlement fostered by a complete lack of responsibility maybe?) OK, now that I'm done making my outrageous comments.
What pains me the most is, nothing is going to change. The VA is has been broken for years, longer than I've been alive. The republicans won't deal with it, and the democrats are too tied to government run healthcare to acknowledge the problem. At this point a starting point would be to fire 90% of the staff (especially the administrators, it's harder to fire the actual medical staff, and it's not clear they're the problem). And that might not even fix it. You very much might have to scrap the whole thing and start over. I was exaggerating for the sake of making a point. Indeed, the point I made was only half accurate anyway. The libs seem to want to claim that "experts" are an important coinage, but I've been running around for years saying the VA was varying forms of broken (although I never thought it was this bad). My common retort to idiots who wanted socialized medicine was "have you seen the VA!?" And I'm roundly considered the department crazy. Go to conferences: That crazy guy. I dont like it but I can understand long wait times and it would not be unusual for deaths to occur pending the appointment but as always, the cover up is what gets you. Especially since it appears the cover ups are to protect bonuses.
If we are going to keep the VA we are going to have to start limiting who is eligible . I want combat veterans and service related injuries or illnesses to get priority. I appreciate the service of the two year veteran who served stateside but whether the VA should continue to provide lifetime care for conditions unrelated to service at the expense of others has to be addressed. Though its the other third rail . Posted by: Bob Belcher at June 24, 2014 10:26 AM (LBF29) 45

I believe I forwarded a possible solution. And since any transition period is (by the nature of transition) going to be tough, no one in DC is going to want to do it. I'm not actually sure it would be "tough" for the people who should matter (and who would matter if the BMM would do it's f*cking job). Kill the VA. Take it's budget. Search for Secret Doors. Wait, no. Kill the VA. Take it's budget. Turn it into an insurance company (better- pay a private insurer to handle it). Posted by: JackStraw Because they define the terms of the debate in the Media, and control the terms of the debate in the Media. They control the language, the epistemology, and influence how many Americans actually think. Jeff Goldberg dwells on this routinely at "Protein Wisdom". I once followed the blog "Tigerhawk" where the proprietor, an alleged "conservative" thought Ezra Klein was a "smart liberal". Ezra Klein is a childish hack. 1000+ dead due to VA 'mismanagement.'
http://tinyurl.com/pykwjhx Coburn's claim that more than 1,000 veterans may have died in the decade since 2001 as the result of hospital mismanagement and neglect is based on a story from the Center for Investigative Reporting this past April. The center found that the VA had paid out more than $200 million to settle wrongful death claims by nearly 1,000 families. Transitions never go on without a hitch. Once we get past it, it would most certainly be better for the people who matter (i.e. the vets.) but during the transition (especially with an openly hostile enemy, i.e. the bureaucrats) it'd be a bumpy ride. The dems would start to care then, they'd find stories of people lost in paperwork mix ups, or the like and air them 24/7. Remember, for the dem's it's not about the vets, it's about maintaining any illusion that the VA ever had good healthcare (spoiler: it didn't.) so they can push socialized medicine. As I said before: Bernie Sander's (I-diot) is the last person who should be heading up a committee to investigate the VA. He's incapable of giving up his pipe dream of socialized medicine. "If we are going to keep the VA we are going to have
to start limiting who is eligible . I want combat veterans and service related injuries or illnesses to get priority. I appreciate the []Posted by: Bob Belcher" No. Why would we? Government is corrupt, inefficient and self serving, always in every single case from now until the end of forever and a week. This is not alterable or negotiable. There is a need for some government, for things like having a name to put on the money, establishing and protecting borders and a small few other things, ok fine. But what things that is must remain limited, controlled and monitored. Any breach of this scope will mushroom into massive corruption, greed, graft and criminality. As we are seeing now. Keep the state out of the healthcare business. Allow vets to be treated by private industry, in the interests of caring for them well. There is no acceptable sentence that begins with 'If we are going to keep the VA...' other than ' we are going to be screwed.'. And all that goes for Obamacare as well. It's been alleged, but I don't know the specifics. But given that the truth seems to be worse than every allegation, it's probably even worse than we suspect. In the lab, several of our collaborators used to hold dual appointments at the VA (it was a way for the university to boost their salary.) As such they'd get access to the research resources there (a way for the VA to hang on to doctors.) Even in something simple like rodent housing the oversight just wasn't there. And when it was found out that there was some..shall we say...regulatory non-compliance, the guy responsible just up and left to another institution and no one seemed to care. But if I had done that, I'd be facing fines, and probably a 3 year NIH ban (if my school's animal program wasn't shut down and I wasn't summarily executed by them.) "Almost 5.5 million people received care in VA health care facilities in 2008. By the end of fiscal year 2008, 78 percent of all disabled and low-income veterans had enrolled with VA for health care; 65 percent of them were treated by VA. In 2008, VA inpatient facilities treated 773,600 patients. VA's outpatient clinics registered over 60 million visits." (from the VA website www.va.gov)
The same site reports 23.4 million living veterans in the U.S. So, if the V.A. is such a paragon of healthcare delivery, why are only 78 percent of low-income vets enrolled? Where are they getting their care? Is there a maldistribution of facilities? Is there real or perceived dissatisfaction with care received in the VA system? Are some of them covered under private healthcare through an employer or other avenue? Does the VA system suck so badly that some of these vets are going without care as an alternative? More importantly, what will happen when the entire country is placed under a system with virtually the same design, and there is no other option? Posted by: S. Fixing the VA will be harder, but it's the right thing to do. Posted by: BurtTC at June 24, 2014 10:58 AM (m+bD3) ====================================== I couldn't disagree more strongly. Sacrificing the health and welfare of all veterans just to save "things the VA does that civilian hospitals do not do" is crazy talk. It's akin to saying "there are things the private economy doesn't do well, so lets nationalize everything". There is a compromise somewhere that allows America to sell off these facilities to a business that knows how to properly serve customers, give veterans vouchers they can use at any hospital of their choice nationwide, like Mayo or wherever and, if there are legitimately some specialities where a particular VA hospital has a specific practice that isn't available elsewhere, we can use some of the budget riches now being squandered to bribe some great hospital into replicating that practice. But sacrifice everyone else in favor of a keeping a proven failure open? Let people die like this, just for the sake of a socialist dream like the VA? Screw that. Classic Bioethics Case discussion. Doubly so since it happened at WashU. The author pretended to be a "lookout" for the people, but meanwhile noted what cars they came from. Then later (pretending to be a Public Health worker) went to their homes and interviewed them about other things (But was really assessing if they were married, had kids, etc.) Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) And father to be in 7 months! at June 24, 2014 11:05 AM (HDwDg) Wait what the actual fuck? My experiences with the VA nurses and docs in the ER and every single one I've come in contact with for the last 3 years have been nothing less than awesome. I also knew 2 older vets who chose to get their end of life care there, even though both could afford other options. Their kids cannot speak highly enough of the care and respect they got till the end, including the priest who gave last rights. Maybe it was luck but I suspect most of the theft and disrespect is coming from administrators and people in a position of power. The folks who actually do the work seem to be doing what they can, with what they have to work with.

the fact that cnn is even covering this is somewhat encouraging news as our nation will continue to backslide into oblivion as long as the news media doesnt do its job correctly by mercilessly hammering an opposing viewpoint administration and then letting a like minded administration get away with almost anything
half of me kinda feels that theyre covering it only so they cant be accused of not covering it because they see their ratings and they know ultimately they have a business to run until they actually start holding the people at the top accountable and start tying these scandals and incompetence to left wing ideology were still kinda doomed Posted by: sound awake at June 24, 2014 11:18 AM (fKOqs) 180

The real problem is that no Government Agency is really accountable, to the PEOPLE.
They are only accountable to the Federal Government, which means not accountable at all. No Entity can self police its own actions indefinitely... yet that is the situation now in the US. The People need to be able to Sue the Government directly... and people in the Government PERSONALLY, for hurting them. We have placed the Government ABOVE the Law... which flies in the very face of the ideal of a Republic. Posted by: Romeo13 at June 24, 2014 11:25 AM (84gbM) 191

Now they must think they have the critical numbers of police and military to do their dirty work for them.Stingrays, in particular, are bad juju. For anyone not familiar with the term, they are a box that mimics a cell tower. Your phone connects with it and sends information to it. There's no way to tell if you're connected to a Stingray, and no way to have that info expunged if they capture your data. They are being provided/purchased by the feds and given to local law enforcement, in addition to being used by the feds themselves. From previous testimony:
Each IRS employee had storage space for 6k emails on the server. Once an employee got close to the limit, they got prompted to archive off emails. Apparently, Lois Lerner archived her excess emails to her hard drive. Which then awkwardly failed. The backups were put on a tape drive, which was recycled after 6 mos. More than 6 mos had passed after Lerner's HD crashed and the missing emails were "discovered" and so the tape backups had already been overwritten. This is what I understand so far. It's not like the VA administrators hurt real people.
They're just soldiers...not union members or activists. Let's put this in perspective! Posted by: Democrat Party at June 24, 2014 11:50 AM (QFxY5) 256

Hello from Way Down Here on another cold winter night in Sydney... OT as usual as you very inconsiderately are living in the past! Just browsing through the UK Daily Mail and I noticed the following little stories An American visitor to London had his head kicked in by apparent Muzzies who objected to this bloke swigging alcohol while walking down the street - Londonistan it is now... Two lovely Labradors poisoned in their own yard by some sicko dropping poison over the fence And our lovely monarch Queen Elizabeth is in Northern Ireland and looking great - goodness that woman is always out and about - what an inspiration for women of a certain age Posted by: aussie at June 24, 2014 11:53 AM (EGwwB) 267

They're all wonderful, enlightened, morally superior people. Didn't you get the memo? Case in point, the hashtag #bornperfect which wants to make sexual conversion therapy illegal. Ironically , the hastag creator is a lesbian. Because women don't go back and forth in their sexuality, ever. But interesting choice: born perfect. They really see themselves as superior beings. =============== And you know where that puts the rest of us. I'm sure they'll have a solution to the problem of imperfect people . . . . But yeah, let's pretend they're all nice people like on Modern Family . . . . Posted by: RoyalOil at June 24, 2014 11:56 AM (VjL9S) 275

http://tinyurl.com/ld9n2mo David Brock, Chairman of Media Matters For America (MMFA) -- the George Soros/John Podesta created organization designed to protect progressive politicians from media reports -- has sent a letter to 'the media' advising them that the Washington Free Beacon practices unethical journalism, particularly in regards to recent reports about a 1970s Hillary Clinton's defense of a rapist by attacking the 12-year-old victim. "To their credit, CNN has owned this story and they've broken more news on it...according to an employee the VA is still engaging in a cover up and altering records to hide their murderous incompetence..."
CNN doesn't deserve credit. They will never link the scandal to Barack Obama. You know, Barack Obama. The current President of the United States? The head of that impenetrable netherworld known as the Executive Branch to which the Department of Veterans Affairs belongs? Posted by: Ernie McCracken at June 24, 2014 12:05 PM (K1SnB) 283
Not mutually exclusive. They have no interest in informing themselves OR
in asking the right questions, nor will they receive answers. =========== Because, there is one. One they don't want you to know. There are at least 3 Republicans who are in the to/from address line. Look at who has been quiet despite being in a position to actually get results. This is a line that goes directly up to Boehner. If--IF--the Republicans had any intent to actually do something, they wouldn't allow the Dems any slack whatsoever--Issa would be calling them to order, calling them out and naming their ploy, interrupting them every time they attempt to deflect or defend. This is a raw abuse of power and only a brutal and raw use of power will call it to heal--anything less than shutting off the mics tells you they don't intend to tame this corruption. There is no reason to let the Dems completely derail this issue UNLESS you have an agreement of "good cop/bad cop." That's the game, here. This is about as real as last Monday's WWE show. I hate to say this but it's so obvious-- all the black members of the committee do is vomit all over the proceedings. God forbid any of this gets close to their god Obama. Re: # 128 -
"...there are things the VA does that civilian hospitals do not do..." Yes, indeedy - in recent years, chiefly, they've become rather expert in failing to actually schedule appointments and/or render needed (though expensive) care to their primary clientele, thus greatly increasing the likelihood of said clientele dying very soon - not (yet,anyway...) too many civilian hospitals "delivering" that sort of "service", I think... "...and lots of Veterans who do not want to go to civilian hospitals, with good reason." Also very true - mostly on account of a) said Veterans' being told by their Gubment that their having served honorably entitles them to needed health care at very low cost via a VA facility, and b) said Vets' further expectation - also based on Gubment statements/documentation - that said low-cost (to them) care via the VA will be rendered promptly and at a comparable or greater level of quality to that obtainable from a civilian facility. Of course, it's clear that in recent times, the Gubment has been lying to said Vets about b), but, you know... Posted by: J.S.Bridges at June 24, 2014 02:38 PM (SNtFV) 290
