Overnight Open Thread (14 Jun 2014)

Today is Flag Day and the birthday of the U.S. Army. Of course Google couldn't be bothered with either as it celebrates the World Cup.

Don't forget, tomorrow is Father's Day.

The Mk 1 Mod 0 Underwater Defense Gun

Before the Navy SEALs had the HK P11, they designed and used the Mk 1 Mod 0 Underwater Defense Gun.

The pistol reportedly had an effective range of some 30 feet at a depth of 60 feet. A SEAL could fire the weapon in the open air in an emergency, but with less than spectacular results.

The unique ammunition is what really set the gun apart. The pistol shot tungsten darts that are about four inches long.

Indiana Jones

Rock version.

Map Thingy

I've got some issues with this map of how you're most likely to die. I'm pretty sure ISIS, the VA, Obamacare, and Boko Haram are rapidly climbing the charts as causes of death.

100 Ways To Attack The Groin

Ouch. Remember, the are no rules in a real life fight. Last man standing by any means.

IRS Tomfoolery

No shit. Obama Administration's claim the Lois Lerner's emails are 'lost' are ludicrous. Oh and there is this. IRS Commissioner testified in March that Lerner's emails had been archived. Hell, I had a hard drive crash and even with the Navy's infamous NMCI service, I didn't lose any email.

Vegan M&M's

Yuck! Vegan M&M's promise to leech the joy out of your life.

Cat Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by spot the hidden animals:

On this date in 2014, or was it yesterday, the 18-1/2 Minute Gap, as evidence of criminal conduct, was replaced by the 2-Year Deletion.

Fortunately, the evidence is still on government servers, Election 2014 is only a few months away.

9 Happy Flag Day!

There are many historical flags associated with the United States, particularly during the War of Independence. One such flag is the Pine Tree Flag that was "was used originally by a squadron of six cruisers commissioned under George Washington's authority as commander in chief of the Continental Army in October 1775... The phrase is a particular expression of the right of revolution used by British philosopher John Locke's in Second Treatise on Civil Government which was published in 1690 as part of Two Treatises of Government refuting the theory of the divine right of kings."

No, and your not knowing is frightening in itself. We were taxed without representation. We had our legislatures eradicated and arrested by fiat of a tyrant. But you should have known this if you had ever, ever read anything about our revolution. The Intolerable Acts treated Americans like they had no rights - rights that were guaranteed to those in England proper.

But what I am amazed at is your utter ignorance of these facts. Please, take an hour and read the Declaration of Independence. Research EACH violation. Then you will understand how utterly weird your post seems.

Actually I admit I've been guilty of being something of a restaurant snob in the past. I remember years ago friends were dying of hunger and insisted on going to Denny's for a really late dinner. Well, they were my ride so I didn't have much choice in the matter. Except that the chili I ordered there... well, it's been quite a while and I still remember it wasn't bad at all.

I also have a bro-in-law who does restaurant inspections as part of his job. He says that Denny's has the cleanest kitchens by far of any major chain he inspects, because the parent company has incredibly high internal sanitary standards and will close a store themselves if they don't think it's good enough.

258 My 85 y.o. father, who is otherwise fairly sharp, has PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy). Not as bad as some guys (it's more guys than women) have it, and he got it in his early 80s as opposed to 60s, but it's still cruel. He can still use a walker for short trips (like bed to bathroom and dinner table). On his birthday in Feb., I flew out to visit. My mom let me in and Dad happened to be in the bathroom. Now, two side effects of PSP are difficulty in focusing and light sensitivity (so he wears sunglasses in the house during the day). Anyway, he has a big, black leather, easy chair about 4-5' from the bed he likes to sit in and watch TV. So I sit in the chair, he comes out of the pisser, hobbling with his walker, and doesn't see me. He goes straight to his bed to lie down. Says to my mom he wishes I could have made it out for his birthday, at which point I stand up, say Hi Dad, and walk over to the bed. He was so overjoyed he almost fell out of the bed. It was a pretty special moment.

337 241 Misanthropic: thanks.

Posted by: qdpsteve at June 14, 2014 11:05 PM (Vh4i6)

The major chains food inspection standards are usually much higher than the FDA's, and they can cancel the contract on the spot. One bad batch can ruin the entire chain's reputation, and those chains have invested huge $$$$$'s into their names. See Chi Chi's.

Apparently Shelby is perfectly OK with paying the Russians to launch our astronauts, because if he has his way, that will be our only option.

You need to cycle ice packs. My doc said twenty minutes on twenty minutes off, but not long term "continuous".

I checked today, and there is some new growth on some of my roses (from Epsom salts?), but at least one that looked beautiful a month ago has succumbed to something, it is all wilted and brown with no blooms remaining.

410 That powerline article is keerect, there's only two ways to lose the info on a hard drive, one is to literally destroy the hard drive, take it apart and remove the platter and destroy it and the second is to spend hours digitally shredding the info on the disk with a program like dban and in the case of the second one there;s still a chance the info can be recovered. So yeah, 'the hard drive crashed and we lost the emails' nonsense is complete bullshit.

426 Ah, time for me to lead the midnight-Eastern slowdown. Must relocate myself, deal with the end of the day, and probably hit the sack rather than lurk on.

I got actual comments on my latest yoo-toob 40-sec video, Obama Blames Fall of Iraq on Video
http://youtu.be/7Mn_clfZkW0
and one comment appears to be a cousin of Dorcas Blumline. "Obama shows great leadership not getting involved in issues that are not vital to our nation...." Heh.

I'd use Ixquick for most searches, but Google has no match on image searches, often is the best on video searches, and worst of all, YouTube is Google. Also they're all up in my phone. Google are evil, but divorcing from them is going to be a task.

these lying mother fuckers in jail right fucking now."

Yep. And which is how the Lois Lerner fiasco _should_ have been handled.

Lerner was allowed to make a lengthy opening statement loudly asserting her total innocence, and THEN started taking the Fifth on all specific matters.

Instead, she and her attorneys should have been told ahead of time that she could take the Fifth, or not take the Fifth. That if she opted to take the Fifth, that would be the one public statement the committee would allow her to voice, and that she would be immediately thereafter arrested and taken to jail by the House Sergeant At Arms.

Where she would sit until she decided she had something to say other than an assertion of her Fifth protections.

But, the genius Beltway GOP allowed Car Alarm Man, the imbecilic Darrell Issa, to run the Lerner hearings. And Issa, being stupid and unwilling to listen to legal advice, fucked them up from the get-go.

Time to remove Issa, put someone smarter and more capable in charge, and then start doing to others at the IRS what should have been done with Lerner. Stick them in the stony lonesome until they sing.

For smaller cuts, I recommend the medical superglue. Note that this is different from normal superglue. More expensive, for one. Slightly different chemistry. Butyl cyanoacrylate instead of methyl cyanoacrylate.

Everyone should drill to clean and disinfect and debride any wound _meticulously_ before closure. There are some really scary bugs around these days.

I'm pretty sure they're used to treating people who hurt themselves
after a couple drinks. As a matter of fact, I'd guess that a minor
carpentry accident after 2 beers is pretty mild by ER standards. It's
not like you're going in with a hamster up your butt. Seriously, go in
and let them stitch the cut.

You are probably right but as a nurse I tend to avoid drs and the
er. Plus it would involve waking hubby up to take me ( I have a strict
rule about driving even after a sip) I have the bleeding under control

but it seems to have worked. I will worry about the healing and scar
later. I really need to invest in a suture kit.

575 One of the smaller cars just backed into a wall, which could bring out the safety car and buy the lead Audi team some time (which they look to need as the seem to have everything that can open on the car open). The 2nd and 3rd place cars are 30 seconds apart and look to be the most competitive pair on the course, though a safety car will probably close that gap up.

592 Re nuking someone -- Like weirddave's thought experiments he's been posting lately on time travel, here's mine:

By a fluke discovery, you have found valid launch codes for one of our ICBMs. Input them and GPS coordinates, and off she flies. Now you know they will discover the security breach in very short order, so you only have minutes to pick a target before the chance is lost forever.

1. Do you pick a target at all? That's actually the toughest question. Would you really kill thousands, or hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians of your own free will? I don't think a single person on this site would actually make that choice.

2, Okay, you're a hardass. Which target, and why?

Posted by: GnuBreed at June 15, 2014 01:11 AM (cHZB7)

593 Being serious asshole. A nuke will put no one or thing in orbit. Droppin a nuke there makes shit so hard. You just baked Saudi, Qatar, Oman, the Emirates, Kuwait. Their are still regimes there we like and need. That's why they hate Iran with nukes. Not everybody in the Persian Gulf is a Western hating Muzzi. Just saying.

Posted by: Ricardo Kill at June 15, 2014 01:00 AM (6T+0j)

FFS. It was mainly intended as a joke. But one nuke on Mecca? Would destroy the city, and maybe a few miles radius around it. Most of Saudi would be unharmed, and Qatar, Kuwait and the Emirates would read about it the papers. Those that can read, anyway.

And Saudi Arabia really is the fountainhead of Wahabbi islam and its offshoots, the muslim brotherhood, and Al Qaeda and all its offshoots. The best thing the USA could do with Saudi, is to march in there, kill off all the "royals" and all the Wahabbi clerics, make the place a commercial colony, and set about Christianizing all the natives.

604 You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

We'll have to agree to disagree. I find NASCAR more entertaining to watch, as there's always the chance someone's going to get pissed and then get rowdy and with all the other series rubbin' is treated like a hate crime. Probably in part because NASCAR coverage is better (the announcers' repeated apologies for having no interaction with the camera feed gets tiresome).

That said, if I'm picking a racing game to play, I'd rather do sports cars on road courses.

648 All the early Roman kings
In their sharkskin suits
Bow ties and buttons
High top boots

Drivin' the spikes in
Blazin' the rails
Nailin' their coffins
In top hats and tails

Fly away, little bird
Fly away, flap your wings
Fly by night
Like the early Roman kings

All the early Roman kings
In the early early morn
Coming down the mountain
Distributing the corn

Speeding through the forest
Racing down the track
You try to get away
They drag you back

Tomorrow is Friday
We'll see what it brings
Everybody's talking
'Bout the early Roman kings

The peddlers and the meddlers
They buy and they sell
They destroyed your city
They'll destroy you as well

The lecherous and treacherous
Are hell-bent for leather
Each of 'em bigger
Than all them put together

Sluggers and muggers
Wearing fancy gold rings
All the women goin' crazy
For the early Roman kings

I can dress up your wounds
With a blood-clotted rag
I ain't afraid to make love
To a bitch or a hag

If you see me comin'
And you're standing there
Wave your handkerchief
In the air

I ain't dead yet
My bell still rings
I keep my fingers crossed
Like the early Roman kings

I can strip you of life
Strip you of breath
Ship you down
To the house of death

One day
You will ask for me
There'll be no one else
That you'll wanna see

Bring down my fiddle
Tune up my strings
I'm gonna break it wide open
Like the early Roman kings

I was up on Black Mountain
The day Detroit fell
They killed 'em all off
And they sent 'em to hell

Ding dong daddy
You're coming up short
Gonna put you on trial
In a Sicilian court

I've had my fun
I've had my flings
Gonna shake em all down
Like the early Roman kings

682 In light of the unfolding disaster in Iraq, which is linked to the unfolding disaster in Syria, which is part of a broader failure in the Middle East, which is only one part of an across-the-board failure in foreign policy, which is separate from the failures at home-including healthcare.gov and ObamaCare more broadly, chronically high unemployment, the stimulus and "shovel ready jobs," a historically weak economic recovery, the lowest workforce participation rate since the 1970s, increasing income inequality, and record poverty-the following needs to be said. Even those of us who were highly critical of Mr. Obama early on, who twice voted against him and worked in campaigns to defeat him, could not envision how epically incompetent he would be.

The harm this man has done is immeasurable. And he still has more than two years left to go.

Mr. Obama belongs in a category all his own.

683 So, I'm out front cutting down a hollybushtreeweed (i hate hollys) this morning.
I hear "LEMONADE! Get your lemonade here!" 6 or 7 little girls across the street have a business set up. They have megaphone and are really working it.
Dad had built an awesome littleTikiBar looking thingy.

I walk over, and buy a cup of syrup (seriously, you could pour this stuff on pancakes).

Anyway, a couple hours later, I take the min-pin for a walk. I pass by that house - this little girl comes running out the fronts door - "hey Mr. Chi! Can I have a dollar?"

"Um, what?"

I want a dollar. Can I have another dollar?
Why? What? Where is your mom?
I just want a dollar! Can I have another dollar?

Mom eventually opens the front door & yells at her "make sure your brother doesn't run in the street! "
Never questioned her 7yr old daughter approaching a 47 yr old man walking by. Much less the little brother beside her (wearing nothing but a diaper).

Who lets their kids talk to strangers these days?
I know that I grew up in a different time, but, I hope Mom didn't let anonymous guys give me money.

The conquests were no more "illegal" than the conquests that the Incas or Aztecs made. The European conquest even provided a god whose worship didn't require hearts being ripped out of still living chests.

Or do you mean to tell me that after 20,000 years of having some of the finest real estate on the planet all to themselves, the Native Americans failed to create a society that could defend itself against foreign incursion

To be fair, the European powers of that time were dealing with advances in technology and warfare that gave them an advantage over just about everyone out there.

The Indians fought each other constantly. If war alone was a driver of technological innovation, they should have been on a par with the Europeans, at the very least.

Nor were they free of communicable disease. Just a different variety than those the Europeans introduced by their very presence in the Americas. Yet when the critical moment came, they had nothing and their population was reduced to a small fraction before most groups ever directly encountered Europeans.

Jared Diamond claims much of this was due to the lack of a good beast of burden for humans in the Americas to exploit but I find this a bit dubious.

714 So Dr. Crank and the Mrs had the little crank? When was it and can Dr. Crank at some point please tell us the boy's real first name so that we're not referring to him as a "little Crank". ;^)

God bless the family!

715 Did anyone take a good look at gun control lunatics marching across the Brooklyn Bridge Guardian article that Drudge has in upper right column?

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun /14/gun-control-march-new-york-shootings-us

"Hundreds of people crossed New York City's Brooklyn Bridge on
Saturday morning to call for an end to gun violence in the US, united by
the rallying cry "Not one more".
The slogan was inspired by Richard Martinez, whose son Christohper was one of three California college students killed in a May attack that left seven people dead, including the shooter, Elliot Rodger. Immediately after the shooting, Martinez demanded lawmakers put an end to gun violence."

It's actually pretty funny as if you take a good look at the photo the "Hundreds of people" are a cleverly posed pic of maybe 15 people huddled together brandishing a number of well designed professionally printed banners and signs.

There's like 8mln people in NYC, and they got 15 to 20 of them worked up enough to go out on the bridge and scream in hysterics about "never again" or whatever it is they have been told to repeat.

Pretty pathetic really.

722 Storms broke loudly at 5am. Got up to let in and dry off the cat who refused to come in last night. The dog demanded constant reassuring petting. So, going back to bed quickly became a non-option.

Then everybody demanded feeding, even though it was hours early. (Everybody but nervous tummy doggy.) Including Miss Fussy the Guest kitty, who has hardly moved from my desk in days, and in the night had thrown up on it. And her little temporary cardboard litterbox was a disaster.

But the storms are moving off, everybody is settled down, everything is cleaned up, and I have coffee. Ahh. But, talk about hitting the ground running first thing in the morning...!

Hi!
