Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | WSJ Breathlessly Suggests: Was David Brat's Defeat of a Jewish Congressman Somehow Related to His Hitler-Shall-Rise-Anew Agenda? All of this is interesting -- hey, I learned something; I had no idea David Brat was a full-on libertarian -- but the piece is written as if to suggest the excerpts here constitute Dangerous Thoughts and therefore Campaign Fodder. David Brat, the Virginia Republican who shocked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) Tuesday, wrote in 2011 that Hitler’s rise "could all happen again, quite easily."And? Mr. Brat's remarks, in a 2011 issue of Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology, came three years before he defeated the only Jewish Republican in Congress. What? They're suggesting Brat is pro-Hitler? How else can one read their noting that Brat said that Hitler could rise again, and then mention that in reference to the defeat of the GOP's only Jewish Congressmen as if they're linked? Here's what he actually wrote: Capitalism is here to stay, and we need a church model that corresponds to that reality. Read Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s diagnosis of the weak modern Christian democratic man was spot on. Jesus was a great man. Jesus said he was the Son of God. Jesus made things happen. Jesus had faith. Jesus actually made people better. Then came the Christians. What happened? What went wrong? We appear to be a bit passive. Hitler came along, and he did not meet with unified resistance. I have the sinking feeling that it could all happen again, quite easily. The church should rise up higher than Nietzsche could see and prove him wrong. We should love our neighbor so much that we actually believe in right and wrong, and do something about it. If we all did the right thing and had the guts to spread the word, we would not need the government to backstop every action we take.Jesus Christ Almighty, the guy is upset by the fact that Christians (and Americans, generally, I think he'd say) are too "morally weak" to stand firm in the face of Hitlerian evil -- and urges them to be more resolute against a New Hitler -- and yet this writer frames this as some sort of Ekdahlian Hitler rehabilitation. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Oh, read on, and you'll see this Ignoramus being surprised at the observation that the "government exercises a monopoly on the use of force." That truism strikes this idiot as possibly scandalous. Via Twitchy, which collects reactions to the WSJ's ugly, venomous stupidity. Update: Eric Cantor will step down as majority leader on July 31st. Why wait so long? I know a vote has to be scheduled and people need to lobby and such, but why a month and a half from now? Obviously he's in a greatly diminished position, having lost his reelection bid. How can he serve as Majority Leader, even for 50 days? The Wall Street Journal: Many suggest that the WSJ printed this alleged news report because it is Establishment, corporatist, and relentlessly pro-amnesty. Maybe. That's all true. However, it must be remembered that while the WSJ ownership and editorial board are conservative (well, corporate conservative), its actual reporters are as progressive as anyone else's. This could be less about the Establishment getting their own back against the Tea Party and more about simple progressive activism in the media. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

And our Society is now so immoral, that we will reward them for telling lies. What they don't understand is, that every lie they tell, hurts our ability to trust... and with the complicated society we have built? Without trust? It all falls apart... and Western Society will cease to exist... Because they are striking at the very foundation of our society... This is interesting over at PJMedia. An eye opener for those that hadn't been following this race very closely.
But the key event of the election, which occurred during the Cantor crash week, was this: on May 28, Rep. Luis Gutierrez came all the way to Richmond to appear at the Virginia Capitol building for the purpose of declaring Eric Cantor to be "the one man standing in the way of immigration reform." Of course, the Allen mailers proclaiming the exact same message had gone out just a day or two before. Adding one plus one together, not a soul present at the Gutierrez event was not suspicious that the Cantor team had coordinated with Gutierrez to produce pure theater. A Brat loss served Gutierrez's interests, as Brat was clearly less of a partner on amnesty than Cantor, and Cantor knew that his amnesty history was killing him within his district. So Brat showed up an hour ahead of the Gutierrez event -- knowing the cameras would already be there -- and got out the message that Cantor's mailers were dishonest, and that Cantor was in fact the friend of amnesty in this race. This appearance by Brat, and the amateur-hour kabuki orchestrated by Cantor and Gutierrez, was the day the MSM first paid attention to Brat. This was the turning point. Brat loses if Gutierrez does not show, or if Brat does not show up to preempt him. wow risk, win Posted by: artisanal 'ette at June 11, 2014 01:35 PM (IXrOn) 72

I was shocked to find that many elderly family members (in MS) are falling for the meme (by blogs and newspapers) that McDaniel and "Tea Party" people are "crazy" and "extremist." She is normally very with it related to politics. I told her everyone has an agenda for their candidate. But the Hitler idea is unique. This Brat man seems like a tough cookie, a total extremist who has a divinity degree and understands the economy, promoting free markets! He should be tried like the witches at Salem! If he sinks it proves Beezlebub (uh, no, say the flies who circle Barry). Wow. Just wow. In 2008 I saw the great divide of family and friends thanks to "racism" if you were opposed to The Won. Now, fracturing division of the GOP. The Dems won't win on their own, with the help of bussing in minorities, the voting dead, illegals, and fixed voting machines and boxes of bogus ballots in trunks guarded by the New Black Panthers. No, they win by the division of the GOP and the voters who stay home on either side of the issue, who aide and abet the Dems. This is our time to shake things up in DC. It took years to destroy this country, it will take years to build it back. That time is now. Posted by: ChristyBlinky, Supermodel, Benghazi reporter at June 11, 2014 01:43 PM (baL2B) 116

WWPS?
What Will Peggy (Noonan) Say? She is a WSJ columnist. She will write her next fulsome column, knowing Cantor personally as a gentleman (which he probably is), and a favorite of Georgetown parties (which he probably is). She will then moan of the demise of the old GOP of which she lived as a speechwriter for President Reagan. She will then demonize the Tea Party as a bunch of extremists this side of the funny-farm, who embrace guns, immunizations, and the military. And, raciss, And anti-Jew. And anti-immigrants. yada Then, tea leaves: about a year from this writing she will suddenly be hit in the noggin and reverse tactics, somehow seeing the beauty of the free market and the new GOP leadership (we can hope and dream today, my wee morons). Again...just look to the Cochran race in MS to see Nazi in full explosion by way of his ads, as he appeals to the Dems to help him limp over the finish line. But what the WSJ really means is Brat = Hitler.
Posted by: --- at June 11, 2014 01:56 PM (MMC8r) This. The point isn't how absurd the story is, or whether or not it's true. The point is the headline: "Brat loves himself some Hitler." When Anne Richards won the governor's seat here in TX many many years ago, part of what sealed the deal was a story that ran in a few major papers with the headline "[Opponent] Paid No Taxes in [Year]" (I was young enough that I do not remember the opponent or the year). The STORY then went on to state, accurately, that he had paid no taxes because he owed none- he had actually lost money in the year in question. But the point wasn't the story- the Headline was everything- and it worked. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther), Ah, F it. at June 11, 2014 01:59 PM (PYAXX) 214
This Brat guy seems to understand something fundamental about our system that Democrats have never understood.
Sharing civic power between lots of institutions is fundamental to Democracy. When a man belongs to many groups: his religion, his community, government, family, social groups like the Boy Scouts, Shriners, etc. he is unlikely to go off the rails in any one direction. When all moral and physical force comes from one institution (government), bad things happen. That may be the biggest problem in the US today, everything but government has lost too much influence to keep people doing the right thing. Everyone has an individual right to defend themselves.
Not if you live in California, Illinois, or New York- among other places. The government absolutely exercises a monopoly on the use of force. Indeed, it must; when you use force, you are answerable to the government- and should be. The government may grant/uphold that you used force in accordance with your right to self-defense, but if they do not so uphold then you will receive some kind of punishment- usually involving jail time. This occurred to me, thinking about all this today:
Faith and Hope in an idea, person or ideal are easy to have when everything is going great. When failure is the outcome: that's when those were meant to be used. It's in those times that we're defined. This isn't a speech. I'm just wondering what it looks like when those that don't have hope, faith, do when they fail. I think we're about to find out. Well said.... our Founders understood this concept... and it worked well for a long time. Take... the Police. There used to be the FBI, Federal Martials, Secret Service, and other Federal Police agencies.... as well as State Agencies... who all watched each other. If one got out of hand? You could go to the one of the others for help. Now? They all basically fall under the Dept. of Homeland Sec... Spies? Same thing... we had Defense Intelligence agencies... the CIA... the NSA... and they all had separate mandates... under separate command structures.. Now? all under National Security Advisor, who is an unelected office, that is not even Confirmed by the Senate. They have taken the competing interest, and put them under one roof, using efficiency as the excuse... but by doing so, they took a lot of the systems built in protection, and threw it out the window. The article did include the whole paragraph. Maybe an earlier version didn't? But they did when I read it.
I didn't read that as a hit piece at all. And I agree, that someone who is running on being an Ethics professor, had better tow the line. I think he will. But woe unto him if he doesn't. I am excited by the possibility of Congress having a conscience! I hope this is a good amen, of good things to come. Posted by: petunia at June 11, 2014 02:19 PM (2UScr) 302

It just means an illegitimate government is infringing on it.
But it's not illegitimate. Oh, it may occasionally be, but the fact is monopolizing use of force is a necessary function of government. Otherwise laws against assault and murder would be "illegitimate" infringements on our Liberty. Even the Founding Fathers knew (and agreed with the proposition) that they would be hanged for Traitors if they failed. Because the Government exercises a monopoly on the use of force. They only were *not* hanged for traitors because they were able to overthrow the British Government (insofar as the Colonies were concerned, at least) and form a new Government. I certainly have the right to defend myself. Both from individuals and an illegitimate government. But that does not change the fact that a legitimate government can, and must, be the final say (exercise a monopoly) in use of force. The question is not whether or not a government has the right and even duty to regulate use of force. The question is whether the government exercises that right (and/or fulfills that duty) in a manner that is consistent with human nature and our natural rights. WSJ's editorial page used to be conservative under
Bartley and I suppose it still is. But the news section is 100% commie, just like the rest of the dinosaur media. Posted by: Steve in Greensboro at June 11, 2014 02:08 PM (bbivj) There's very much an anti-Tea Party undercurrent imo, which is why I let my subscription lapse. Kimberley Strassell used to be good but she's turned into the GOPe's crotch ferret. When she and Bret "A Conservative Case for Homo Marriage" Stephens aim their ire at the right targets they're very effective; but they willfully join the circular firing squad otherwise. I suspect the delay may be to give the Majority Leader's staff a chance to investigate their options. It is roughly the same length of time the staff of the losers in a November general election have until a new Congress gets sworn in and they are out of work.

Seriously, what's the problem here? Are we only supposed to make
judgments on an article based on the first two sentences (in this case that equals the first two paragraphs)? Yes. Yes we are. Because the headline and the first paragraph or two are the only parts that matter. Most people only read that far. Newspapers know and use that fact in order to press their agenda while still being able to claim "but we told the truth!!!" This is a smear attempt by the WSJ (or, at least, this writer). taylork the headline and the first sentences are completely misleading. and that's what google and bing will pick up. and he knows that
>>>I don't know about that. Is there really a big conspiracy wherein one accurately reports everything once the 3rd sentence/paragraph hits, but just makes shit up in the first two? Particularly in the WSJ, if one is going to even read the WSJ, chances are they look beyond the first two sentences. Posted by: taylork at June 11, 2014 02:26 PM (i1B3X) 319
Krauthammer wrote speeches for fucking Mondale.
Rubin was for Romney all the way. George Will supported GHWB over Reagan and called Reagan dangerous. Frigging GWB barely won the electoral and lost the popular vote and he said Reagan every third sentence. But when he gets in, he goes for nationalized education legislation with Ted fucking Kennedy. And somehow real conservatives are the problem here. Yeah, good one. Posted by: prescient11 at June 11, 2014 02:27 PM (tVTLU) 320
Is there really a big conspiracy wherein one accurately reports
everything once the 3rd sentence/paragraph hits, but just makes shit up in the first two? Not so much a conspiracy as "the way it's done." Particularly in the WSJ, if one is going to even read the WSJ, chances are they look beyond the first two sentences. Not true. Like most national newspapers, many people only skim to find articles of interest, or to "look like" they read the paper in question. Additionally, as someone else pointed out- the headline and first sentence or two are what are going to show up on search results- not the full article. It's a hit-job. Look at it another way- why even ask the question? Given how non-controversial his actual position is, why even talk about it? Do we have some surge of neo-nazism of which I'm unaware? The only way this is worth of consideration at all is if you believe (or, at least, represent) his views to be controversial. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther), Ah, F it. at June 11, 2014 02:32 PM (PYAXX) 321
Brat declined the Tea Party label, he thanked the local Tea Party and local libertarians and "the grassroots." He says he is a life-long conservative and has not changed.
Of course he might be testy on the subject since he appealed to all the national Tea Party groups for help at the start and got nothing. Brat hasn't realized that the groups are out for themselves and don't represent the TP in truth, just use it to raise money. The real "TP" money in primaries like MS comes from Club for Growth, which was 20 years old before the first Tea Party in 2009, and Senate Conservatives Fund, which is also non-aligned and only funds Senate races, as well as a few PACs, none of which are directly affiliated with any TP group. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Brat back in 2011 was reading the Eric Metaxas Bonhoeffer biography about Christians standing up to Hitler. That's about when Metaxas' book was hot. In other words, the WSJ article is even more full of shit than it sounds here. Posted by: The Regular Guy at June 11, 2014 03:32 PM (qHCyt) 328
My reading this past year has included a half dozen books on the Third
Reich. I could give you a dozen things that changed within the first two years after Hitler became chancellor on January 30, 1933. I am sure many informed Germans were horrified but it was too late. Here are three of Hitler's early steps to consolidate power: 1) A huge extra-judicial armed force had been given money and authority outside the standard army and police (The SS, run by Himmler). 2) An extra-judicial authority had been set up outside normal German jurisprudence (The Gestapo) also run by Himmler. 3) Concentration camps were setup originally to get Nazi political opponents out of the way and discourage them from speaking out, also run by Himmler. These camps turned into places where millions of people from central Europe were murdered (some Germans too). In a sense, Himmer was Hitler's terrorist and executioner, and followed the fuhrer absolutely. I haven't seen the Bratt remark, but if was referring to how quickly Hitler altered Germany with a tyrannical outcome, he may have said so because Americans are noticing how quickly our government institutions are used against the taxpayers and are threatening Americans, while protecting foreign invaders who break US law by not having authority to be here. Bratt is right. Look at Obama, if he isn't the new Hitler, what has he done that Hitler wouldn't have done to destroy America?
